Three people were killed, and a dozen others were feared trapped after a landslide occurred in northwestern Pakistan early Tuesday (April 18). According to officials, the landslide struck at the border crossing on the Khyber Pass, a major point of trade between Pakistan and Afghanistan. The officials said that more than 20 trucks were buried in the disaster.

Visuals shared by the news agency Reuters showed the damaged vehicles, diggers cleaning up debris from the landslide, and dead bodies being carried to an ambulance.

Speaking to Reuters, deputy commissioner of the Khyber district Abdul Nasir Khan said that two Afghan citizens were killed, and authorities were trying to recover the bodies.

Khan said that three people were taken to a hospital and the number of casualties could rise. The deputy commissioner added the wreckage was quite extensive and rescue operations were going on with heavy machinery.

A third body was pulled out hours later, Reuters reported.

Raza Khan, a truck driver, said that the landslide occurred at around 2 o'clock last night.

"It was raining. There was a huge thud that woke us up. As we got up, we heard the sounds of people and ambulances. Our vehicles are parked over there. After about half an hour it became clear that around 15 to 20 trucks were buried under the mud. There are people inside the vehicles - drivers and cleaners - inside the loaded vehicles," Khan said.

Further details are awaited.

Transmashholding (TMH), the largest manufacturer of locomotives and rail equipment in Russia, has won a global bid to produce, supply and maintain 120 Vande Bharat express trains for the Indian Railways, Russian news agency TASS reported on Monday (April 17).

The 16-car long-distance trains are part of a major programme to re-equip the national carrier on long-distance routes. They will be able to reach a speed of up to 160 kilometres per hour, the report said.

Terms of the tender stipulated that the contract be signed by June 1. As per the report, the contract will pay $1.8 billion for supplying the Vande Bharat trains and $2.5 billion for their maintenance for 35 years. Considering the indexation, the total value of the contract could be as much as $6.5 billion.

Addressing a press conference, Transmashholding's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Kirill Lipa said, "The decision has been made, but the document itself has not been signed, (it will be signed) within 45 days from March 29."

TMH took part in the tender in a consortium with the Indian state construction and engineering company RVNL. The Russian firm beat out proposals by companies such as Alstom, Stadler, Siemens, and a consortium of local producers led by Titagarh and BHEL, which bid the second-lowest.

The report further said that the production of the trains will be localised at the Indian Railways, Marathwada Rail Coach Factory, in Latur, Maharashtra. The delivery of the trains is expected to take place between 2026 to 2030. But the first two prototypes will be ready for trials by the end of 2025.

Lula's comments came a day after the United States criticised his remarks during a recent trip to China that Washington was "encouraging the war" in Ukraine and that Kyiv shared the blame for the conflict, the news agency AFP reported.

Addressing a press conference, US National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said that Brazil was parroting Russian and Chinese propaganda without at all looking at the facts. Ukraine also expressed anger at the comments of the Brazilian president.

Hitting back, Lula's foreign policy advisor Celso Amorim called Washington's criticism absurd and insisted that Brazil did not share Russia's position.

Speaking to Globo TV, Armorim said that Brasília defended the territorial integrity of Ukraine, adding, "As long as there are no talks, the ideal peace for the Ukrainians and the Russians will not happen. There must be concessions."

Since the beginning of the war in February last year, Brazilian President Lula pitched himself as a peace broker (to end the conflict). His proposal, based on Brazil's tradition of non-intervention and neutrality, calls for a group of countries not involved in the war to engage Moscow and Kyiv in talks.

However, Ukraine criticised the proposal as it treated the victim and the aggressor in the same way. On Tuesday, the Ukrainian government invited Lula to the war-torn country to see for himself the consequences of Russia's offensive, the news agency Reuters reported.

At least one worker died and five others were injured after a four-story parking facility collapsed in New York City's lower Manhattan near Pace University and the New York Stock Exchange on Tuesday (April 18). Footage shared by the news agency Reuters on Wednesday showed a rescue operation underway and multiple cars stacked on top of one another amid crumpled slabs of concrete. John Esposito, the chief of fire operations at the New York City Fire Department, said that one worker was pronounced dead on the scene, four more were hospitalised for injuries, and a sixth individual who was injured denied medical treatment. Esposito described all six people as workers who were inside the parking structure when it collapsed. "It all happened so fast," said Thai Nguyen, who lives in Chinatown and is a manager of the nearby Kollective Klub, told the news agency. "Our store is two buildings from the parking garage, and we also have a hotel next to us. People ran inside asking if they could take refuge inside our store," Nguyen, 35, added. Sandy Imhoff, who lives in an apartment on the same street, said she fled her home with her two cats when her building began to shudder from the force of the collapse. Imhoff added that everyone in her building was able to evacuate. Online records from the New York City Department of Buildings showed that the parking structure, at the site of the collapse, was cited for 45 violations, including 25 since 2003, many related to its elevators. A filing in 2003 said ceiling slab cracks existed as well as defective concrete with exposed rear cracks. The filing also said that a penalty of $800 was paid for the violation. JPMorgan Chase & Co CEO Jamie Dimon must undergo up to two days of questioning by lawyers handling lawsuits over whether the bank can be held liable in financier Jeffrey Epstein's sexual abuse of teenage girls and women, a federal judge said Tuesday.

During a telephone conference with lawyers, Judge Jed Rakoff in Manhattan ordered Dimon to set aside two days for deposition testimony, though he didn't specify when. He said one day of testimony might be sufficient and lawyers would have to get his approval to continue to a second day.

The New York bank, the nation's largest, has been sued by the government of the US Virgin Islands and two women, both identified as Jane Doe, who say they were abused by Epstein.

The lawsuits contend JPMorgan should have seen evidence of Epstein's sex trafficking and avoided profiting from it.

The bank, besides denying the allegations, has sued one of its former executives, saying the man hid Epstein's decades of sex abuse and trafficking to keep Epstein as a client.

Darin Oduyoye, a JPMorgan spokesperson, said lawyers for the lawsuits against JPMorgan ?know our CEO has no relevant knowledge, but persists with this media stunt designed for headlines and clicks.?

He said a review of more than two decades of emails and other documents made it clear that Dimon had no involvement with Epstein or his accounts.

JPMorgan Chase & Co CEO Jamie Dimon must undergo up to two days of questioning by lawyers handling lawsuits over whether the bank can be held liable in financier Jeffrey Epstein's sexual abuse of teenage girls and women, a federal judge said Tuesday.

"He does not recall ever meeting, speaking or communicating with him," Oduyoye said. Eleven Indonesian fishermen were rescued on Monday (April 17) from a remote island in north Western Australia after their vessel shipwrecked during a powerful cyclone. According to a report by the news agency Reuters on Wednesday, the fishermen were rescued on Monday night from Bedwell Island, which is about 313 kilometres west off the coast of the town of Broome in Western Australia.

A border security aircraft spotted them during a surveillance mission following cyclone Ilsa.

In a statement, a spokesperson from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said that the fishermen were then moved to Broome and given necessary medical care.

They informed authorities that two vessels were caught in the cyclone, one with 10 crew and the other with nine, the statement said.

It added the vessel with 10 crew washed ashore at Bedwell Island but the second vessel sank in bad weather. Eight fishermen are still missing, the AMSA also said.

Cyclone Ilsa made landfall in Western Australia last Friday, lashing coastal regions with some of the strongest winds the country has ever recorded. According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the cyclone brought a wind gust of 289 kilometres per hour, believed to be the strongest on record.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida was about to speak at a by-election campaign event at a fishing harbour in Wakayama City last Saturday (April 15) when an apparent smoke bomb landed within a metre of him.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida was about to speak at a by-election campaign event at a fishing harbour in Wakayama City last Saturday (April 15) when an apparent smoke bomb landed within a metre of him. Kishida was evacuated and unharmed, but two people suffered light injuries. This attack came less than a year after former prime minister Shinzo Abe was assassinated at a campaign event in July last year. The suspect in the attack on Prime Minister Kishida has been identified as Ryuji Kimura, 24, who was arrested on Saturday. And a day later, authorities searched his home. Who is Ryuji Kimura? Ryuji Kimura is suspected of a smoke bomb attack on Prime Minister Fumio Kishida last Saturday. He was arrested at the scene of the incident. On Sunday, police spent more than eight hours searching his home, and residents were temporarily evacuated over the threat of explosives, a report by the news agency AFP on Monday said. ALSO READ | Shinzo Abe assassination: Accused Yamagami indicted by Japan prosecutors after psych review According to national broadcaster NHK, suspected gunpowder, pipe-like objects, and tools were found at his home and investigators believe the explosive thrown at Saturday's event was homemade. Investigators are analysing Kimura's phone and computer for clues, but he has so far refused to detail any motive in the attack. It is also being probed if the explosive (thrown at Kishida) had lethal power. On Monday, the 24-year-old was transferred to the Wakayama prosecutors' office from a local police station. He is under arrest on the suspicion of obstruction of business. Kimura had a track record of suing govt Local media reported on Tuesday that Ryuji Kimura had a track record of suing the government and claimed that he was unfairly barred from running in national elections. In June last year, Kimura filed suit in Kobe district court, claiming he could not run for the election because of his age and inability to prepare a $22,339 (3 million yen) deposit. Under Japanese law, candidates for upper house elections must be 30 years or older, and the minimum age to run for parliament's lower house is 25. Kimura's lawsuit argued that it was unconstitutional that he could not run in last summer's upper house vote, local media reported and pointed out he sought $750 (10,000 yen) in damages for the "mental distress" of not being able to stand for election. Speaking to AFP, a spokesperson from the Osaka High Court said that the 24-year-old sued the government but his claim was rejected by a lower court. Kimura has appealed, and the Osaka court will issue its ruling next month. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. "And I think this might be the best path to safety, in the sense that an AI that cares about understanding the universe, it is unlikely to annihilate humans because we are an interesting part of the universe," Musk, the CEO of Twitter and Tesla said.
