A politician in Scotland faced severe criticism after he suggested that there was a connection between trans people and people having learning disabilities. Taking to Twitter, Member of Scottish Parliament (MSP) Stephen Kerr criticised the government's recognition reform bill. According to a report by Metro last Saturday (April 15), the proposal, which was passed by Holyrood in December last year but struck down by Westminster weeks later – made it easier for trans Scots to legally change their gender.

The majority of Tory MSPs voted against the legislation, the report added.&nbsp;

In the tweet, which now stands deleted, Kerr said, "The coming of a new First Minister brought the chance to review the Gender Reform Bill, and ask questions Sturgeon didn’t bother with."

"Why are more young people wanting to change their gender? Is there a link with having learning/development disabilities?"

"But they don’t care," the tweet read.&nbsp;

There was an immediate reaction to Kerr's remarks. Politicians and people alike criticised Kerr with some highlighting that the MP provided no evidence at all for his claims, and also demanded his resignation.&nbsp;

Scotland: MP Stephen Kerr claims trans people have learning disabilities, later apologises: Report

Philstavious “Phil” Dowdell, 18-year-old local student-athlete weeks away from graduation, died saving his sister Alexis' life after a shooting <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/mass-shooting-in-alabama-leaves-multiple-dead-at-a-birthday-party-582988">occurred at her birthday party last Saturday</a> (April 15). Phil was among the four dead while 32 others were injured in the shooting. Speaking to the news agency Associated Press on Monday (April 17), Alexis said, “I got on my knees and he was laying face down. And that’s when I grabbed him. I turned him over, I was holding him.”

She tapped Phil's face, begging him to, “stay with me.” Alexis told the news agency that she was not crying at the moment as she was trying to be strong instead of panicking.&nbsp;

"You’re going to be all right. You’re a fighter, you’re strong,” the 16-year-old added.&nbsp;

Phil Dowdell was set to attend Jacksonville State University on a football scholarship. Remembering the 18-year-old, Jacksonville head coach Rich Rodriguez said, "He was a great young man with a bright future. My staff and I are heartbroken."

This shooting incident in Alabama is another high-profile mass shooting in the United States. The four people killed on Saturday&nbsp;were high school seniors.&nbsp;

There is no official word on what led to the gun violence and authorities have not said whether they detained any suspects or the shooter remained at large or died in Saturday's gunfire.&nbsp;

Jessica Ware, a friend of one of the victims, told the news agency Reuters on Monday that the community was "devastated, worried and scared" to know a suspect could still be at large.&nbsp;

On the night of the shooting, Ware drove to Dadeville's Lake Martin community hospital upon learning the daughter of one of her friends had been at the party and had survived.&nbsp;

Ware said that there were armed people at the party who were asked to leave but chose not to.&nbsp;

“So I am learning that people knew there were guns there and they (armed people) were asked to leave, but they chose not to,” she said.&nbsp;

Alabama birthday party shooting: 18-year-old died saving sister's life

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) warned on Tuesday (April 18) that the United Kingdom (UK) government was failing to protect workers against the rapid adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) that would increasingly determine hiring and firing, and pay and promotion. According to a report by the Financial Times, the TUC argued that the government was failing to put in place the guard rails needed to protect workers as adoption of AI-powered technologies spread.&nbsp;

These technologies were already widely used to make life-changing decisions across the economy, the union said, adding AI systems were being widely used in recruitment. The TUC also encountered teachers' concerns that they were being monitored by systems originally introduced to track the performance of students. The report said that call centre workers reported that their colleagues were routinely allocated calls by AI programs&nbsp;that were more likely to lead to a good outcome, and so attract a bonus.

Mary Towers, a policy officer at the TUC, said that the rise of generative AI brought the renewed urgency to the need for legislation.&nbsp;

"These technologies are often spoken about as the future of work," Towers said, adding the TUC had evidence to show that it was widespread across employment relationships. "These are existing urgent problems in the workplace and they have been for sometime," she said.&nbsp;

The TUC also pointed out that the government's Data Protection and Digital Information Bill would dilute important existing protections for workers.&nbsp;

<h2>'TUC's assessment wrong': Government</h2>

The government, meanwhile, criticised the TUC's assessment by saying it was wrong. A government spokesperson said that AI was set to drive growth and create new&nbsp;&nbsp;highly paid jobs across the UK.

US: Police arrest 17 in California in connection with Gurdwara shootings

A Germany-based artist has refused a much-coveted photography award after admitting he generated the prize-winning image using artificial intelligence (AI). Boris Eldagsen said on his website that he was not accepting the prize he had won for the 'creative open' category at the Sony world photography awards held last week.&nbsp;

The image showed two women from different generations in black and white.&nbsp;

“Thank you for selecting my image and making this a historic moment, as it is the first AI-generated image to win in a prestigious international PHOTOGRAPHY competition.

"How many of you knew or suspected that it was AI generated? Something about this doesn’t feel right, does it? AI images and photography should not compete with each other in an award like this. They are different entities. AI is not photography. Therefore I will not accept the award," Eldagsen said.&nbsp;

Eldagsen said that he applied as a "cheeky monkey" to find out if the competitions were prepared for AI images to enter, adding they are not.&nbsp;

"We, the photo world, need an open discussion. A discussion about what we want to consider photography and what not. Is the umbrella of photography large enough to invite AI images to enter – or would this be a mistake? With my refusal of the award I hope to speed up this debate," the German artist said.&nbsp;

Eldagsen suggested donating the prize to the foto-festival in Odesa in war-torn Ukraine.&nbsp;

His refusal and admission come amid an increasing debate on AI.&nbsp;

According to a report by The Guardian on Monday (April 17), a spokesperson for the World Photography Organisation said that Eldagsen confirmed the co-creation of the image using AI to them before he was announced as the winner.

“In our correspondence, he (Eldagsen) explained how following ‘two decades of photography, my artistic focus has shifted more to exploring creative possibilities of AI generators’ and further emphasising the image heavily relies on his ‘wealth of photographic knowledge’.

"As per the rules of the competition, the photographers provide the warranties of their entry," the spokesperson said, as per the report.&nbsp;

The spokesperson said that the creative category of the open competition welcomed various experimental approaches to image making "from cyanotypes and rayographs to cutting-edge digital practices".

Following correspondence with Eldagsen, the organisation felt his entry fulfilled the criteria for this category and the organisation was supportive of his participation.&nbsp;

The spokesperson also said that now the German artist declined the award, the organisation suspended its activities with him. "Given his actions and subsequent statement noting his deliberate attempts at misleading us, and therefore invalidating the warranties he provided, we no longer feel we are able to engage in a meaningful and constructive dialogue with him."

German artist refuses Sony photography award, admits prize-winning image AI-generated, because...

Pakistan's Supreme Court on Friday directed the central bank to provide Rs 21 billion for elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces after the government failed to provide funds for the polls.

The issue of the election has taken centre stage in Pakistani politics as former prime minister Imran Khan has been pushing for timely elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces.

The apex court on April 4 ordered the federal government to provide Rs 21 billion to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) by Monday to enable it to organise polls in

Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa provinces, previously ruled by Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party.
Instead, the coalition government led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, introduced a bill titled ?Charged Sum for General Election (Provincial Assemblies of Punjab &amp; Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) Bill 2023? in Parliament on Monday to authorise the release of the required funds for the ECP to hold elections.

The bill, sent to the House Standing Committee on Finance and Revenue for discussions by the National Assembly Speaker, was rejected on Thursday.

The apex court took up the case of failure of the government to arrange necessary funds despite the court verdict of April 4 to provide money to the Election Commission of Pakistan by April 10.

A three-member panel led by Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial heard the case where State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Deputy Governor Sima Kamil and other officials including Attorney General Mansoor Awan were present.

After the hearing, the chief justice ordered the SBP to release Rs 21 billion and send an ?appropriate communication? to this effect to the finance ministry by April 17.The court had already ordered elections in Punjab on May 14 but the ECP had been hamstrung due to the non-availability of money to carry out the exercise.

The government has been using the pretext of a deteriorating economic situation to avoid the release of funds.

However, the top court is adamant that elections are held on time. Separately, the court is also hearing petitions on the failure of the federal government to implement the order to provide Rs 21 billion by April 10.

Pakistan's Supreme Court on Friday directed the central bank to provide Rs 21 billion for elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces after the government failed to provide funds for the polls.

Pakistan's Supreme Court on Friday directed the central bank to provide Rs 21 billion for elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces after the government failed to provide funds for the polls. The issue of the election has taken centre stage in Pakistani politics as former prime minister Imran Khan has been pushing for timely elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces. The apex court on April 4 ordered the federal government to provide Rs 21 billion to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) by Monday to enable it to organise polls in Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa provinces, previously ruled by Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. Instead, the coalition government led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, introduced a bill titled ?Charged Sum for General Election (Provincial Assemblies of Punjab & Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) Bill 2023? in Parliament on Monday to authorise the release of the required funds for the ECP to hold elections. The bill, sent to the House Standing Committee on Finance and Revenue for discussions by the National Assembly Speaker, was rejected on Thursday. The apex court took up the case of failure of the government to arrange necessary funds despite the court verdict of April 4 to provide money to the Election Commission of Pakistan by April 10. A three-member panel led by Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial heard the case where State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Deputy Governor Sima Kamil and other officials including Attorney General Mansoor Awan were present. After the hearing, the chief justice ordered the SBP to release Rs 21 billion and send an ?appropriate communication? to this effect to the finance ministry by April 17.The court had already ordered elections in Punjab on May 14 but the ECP had been hamstrung due to the non-availability of money to carry out the exercise. The government has been using the pretext of a deteriorating economic situation to avoid the release of funds. However, the top court is adamant that elections are held on time. Separately, the court is also hearing petitions on the failure of the federal government to implement the order to provide Rs 21 billion by April 10. Pakistan Army chief General Syed Asim Munir on Friday (April 14) urged lawmakers to focus on "our Pakistan" instead of a debate over "Naya" (news) or "Purana" (old) Pakistan. According to a report by the Express Tribune, General Munir was speaking to members of the National Assembly in an in-camera meeting to brief them about the prevailing security situation.&nbsp;

The meeting was attended by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, top military officials, and four provincial chief ministers among others.&nbsp;

The meeting took place against the backdrop of the resurgence of terrorism in Pakistan, but it assumed greater significance given the current political tensions where the government and Supreme Court are at loggerheads with each other over the issue of holding elections in Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) as well as clipping discretionary powers of the chief justice.&nbsp;

"We should leave the discussion of 'Naya' (new) and 'Purana' (old) Pakistan and talk about "our Pakistan,” General Munir said which was met with applause from the lawmakers, the Express Tribune reported on Friday.&nbsp;

Munir said that the elected representatives of the people should determine Pakistan's destiny and the army would fully support them in the journey towards the development and success of the country.&nbsp;

The army chief also conceded that talking to Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) was a mistake. He asserted that terrorists have no other option but to accept the state`s writ. He expressed disappointment at the outcome of negotiations with terrorists, as it resulted in further groupings of such elements.&nbsp;

General Munir further said that security forces were ready to maintain peace in Pakistan and that intelligence-based operations were being conducted daily in this regard.

Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro was on Friday (April 14) ordered to face questioning over the January 8 riots. Supporters of far-right Bolsonaro invaded and defaced the country's Congress, presidential palace, and the Supreme Court on January 8, protesting his defeat by leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in last year's election. Over 1,800 people were arrested in the riots.&nbsp;

On Friday, Supreme Court judge Justice Alexandre de Moraes ruled Jair Bolsonaro had to appear before the federal police within 10 days to answer questions over accusations he incited the rioters, the news agency AFP reported.&nbsp;

"I grant the request by the prosecutor general's office and determine the federal police must take Jair Messias Bolsonaro's testimony within a maximum of 10 days," Moraes wrote in the ruling.&nbsp;

Earlier, Moraes ruled on January 13 that Bolsonaro be placed under investigation in the case. However, the Supreme Court judge postponed the ruling on a request by prosecutors for Bolsonaro to be questioned, as the former Brazilian president was in Florida, United States at the time.

Bolsonaro was in the US for three months after his defeat in the election and returned to Brazil on March 30. Prosecutors had asked for Bolsonaro to face questioning over a video he posted online two days after the riots, questioning the legitimacy of Lula's election. The video was later deleted.&nbsp;

The prosecutors, however, said their probe of Bolsonaro &nbsp;would not be limited to the video, but a "full investigation of all acts before and after January 8."
The former president has denied any involvement in the riots.&nbsp;

As 21-year-old Jack Teixeira, accused of leaking top secret US classified documents online, was charged, US President Joe Biden said on Friday that an investigation would examine why the leaker had access to these classified documents. Speaking to reporters as he ended his Ireland trip, President Biden said,&nbsp;“Yes, I’ve instructed the Department to make sure that they get to the root of why he had access in the first place, number one. And, number two, to focus extensively on the extent to which it all occurred. And that’s going on right now. I have nothing to report beyond what’s already been reported,” the news agency Reuters reported.&nbsp;

“Well, there’s no way to predict how long an investigation will take, but I don’t think it’s going to take very long. I think we’re getting to the bottom quicker than…,” Biden added.&nbsp;

Earlier on Friday, the US president released a statement, commending the action taken by authorities on Teixeira’s arrest in the leak case.&nbsp;

"While we are still determining the validity of those documents, I have directed our military and intelligence community to take steps to further secure and limit distribution of sensitive information, and our national security team is closely coordinating with our partners and allies," the statement said.&nbsp;

Jack Teixeira, a member of the US National Air Guard, was arrested from his residence on Thursday and was charged with unlawfully copying and transmitting classified material. US Attorney General Merrick Garland said&nbsp;that the 21-year-old was arrested in connection with an investigation into alleged unauthorised removal, retention, and transmission of classified national defence information.

Teixeira made his initial appearance in a crowded federal court. During the hearing, Boston's top federal national security prosecutor, Nadine Pellegrini, requested that Teixeira be detained pending trial, and a detention hearing was set for Wednesday (April 19), Reuters reported.&nbsp;

The leaked documents were believed to be the most serious security breach in the US since more than 700,000 documents, videos and diplomatic cables appeared on the WikiLeaks website in 2010. On Thursday, the Pentagon called the leak a "deliberate, criminal act."

The United States Supreme Court on Friday (April 14) temporarily preserved full access to the widely-used abortion pill mifepristone, putting on hold lower court decisions placing restrictions on the drug. According to a report by the news agency AFP, the court issued an administrative stay freezing rulings until Wednesday (April 19) to allow for parties to submit their arguments

The stay, signed by Justice Samuel Alito, asked for parties to submit their briefs by Tuesday (April 18).&nbsp;

Friday's decision comes after the Justice Department filed an emergency appeal asking the Supreme Court to block the lower court rulings that would have banned or limited the use of mifepristone from 5 GMT on Saturday.&nbsp;

In its emergency filing, the Justice Department argued that the lower court orders would upend the status quo and scramble the complex regulatory regime governing mifepristone.

"That disruptive result would profoundly harm women, the nation's healthcare system, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), and the public interest," the filing added.&nbsp;

The legal battle started last week when a conservative federal judge in Texas ordered a nationwide ban on mifepristone, in response to a lawsuit by an anti-abortion coalition challenging the FDA's approval of the pill in 2000. Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk adopted language used by abortion opponents, saying mifepristone was used to kill the unborn human.&nbsp;

Apart from the Justice Department, Danco Laboratories, the manufacturer of mifepristone, asked the Supreme Court in a separate filing to stay the lower courts' rulings pending an appeal, saying they risked creating "regulatory chaos across the country."

Danco Laboratories noted that a separate federal court in Washington ruled in response to a suit by 17 Democratic-ruled US states that access to mifepristone should be maintained, AFP reported.&nbsp;

Researchers in Michigan found the wreckage of two ships that disappeared into Lake Superior in 1914. According to a report by the Associated Press on Wednesday (April 12), the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society announced the discoveries this month after confirming details with other researchers. Ric Mixter, a board member of the society, called the discoveries a career highlight.&nbsp;

Mixter said the discoveries not only solved a chapter in America's darkest day in lumber history but also showcased a team of historians who dedicated their lives toward making sure these stories were not forgotten.&nbsp;

The two ships, owned by the Edward Hines Lumber Company sank into Lake Superior on November 18, 1914, when a storm swept through as they moved lumber from Baraga, Michigan, to Tonawanda, New York. The steamship C.F. Curtis was towing the schooner barges Selden E. Marvin and Annie M. Peterson; all 28 people aboard were killed.

According to Corey Adkins, the society’s content and communications director, both wrecks were discovered about 32 kilometres north of Grand Marais, Michigan, farther into the lake than the 1914 accounts suggested the ships sank. Adkins said there was damage to Marvin’s bow and Curtis’ stern, making researchers wonder whether a collision contributed.&nbsp;

“One of the things that make us proud when we discover these things is helping piece the puzzle together of what happened to these 28 people,” Adkins added and pointed out that though it had been 109 years (since the incident), maybe there were still some family members that wanted to know what happened.

“Those are all questions we want to consider when we go back out this summer,” he said.&nbsp;
