Twitter owner Elon Musk early Wednesday (April 12) set a final date for removing legacy blue checks from Twitter accounts verified under the social media giant's previous regime. "Final date for removing legacy Blue checks is 4/20," Musk tweeted. This means that if users have a legacy verified account on Twitter with a blue mark, they will have to pay now to keep the checkmark. The only accounts that will keep their blue checkmarks are those subscribed to Twitter Blue.

Insider Intelligence also pointed out that Musk's efforts to build up a subscription service "won't make up for the lost ad revenue."

US President Joe Biden on Tuesday branded a judge's ruling that would block access to a widely used abortion pill "out of bounds."

"It's completely out of bounds what the judge did," Biden told reporters before departing Washington for a visit to Northern Ireland and Ireland.

On Friday, Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk, an appointee of former Republican president Donald Trump, overturned the Food and Drug Administration's two-decade-old approval of mifepristone, which is used for more than half the abortions carried out annually in the United States.

Shortly after the judge in Texas issued his decision, a judge in Washington state ruled in a separate case that access to mifepristone must be preserved.

And the US Justice Department on Monday urged an appeals court on to freeze the Texas ruling.

Biden pledged last week to fight the ruling, saying it was part of a broader effort by Republicans to achieve a nationwide abortion ban.

US President Biden calls judge's abortion drug block 'out of bounds'

Nine people were killed in a gang-related in northern Ecuador close to the Colombian border on Tuesday (April 11). According to the public prosecutor, dozens of attackers arrived in boats and cars at a small port in Esmeraldas province and then opened fire. Taking to Twitter, the public prosecutor said seven bodies were recovered from the port and two more from a nearby health centre.

Speaking to a local news channel, Interior Minister Juan Zapata said that the shooting was carried out by 30 heavily armed people, adding it was related to "a fight between gangs, a territorial fight," the news agency AFP reported.

Zapata said there were between 1,500 and 2,000 people in the port at the time of the shooting. The interior minister added that the shooting happened as fishermen "preferred the security" of one criminal organisation and were targeted by another in retaliation.

Since March 3, the Esmeraldas province has been under a state of emergency due to high levels of crime and violence, as has the port city of Guayaquil. AFP reported on Tuesday that both areas have become increasingly bloody centres of a turf war between rival drug trafficking gangs.

Last month, police found three bodies, including a teenager, wrapped in black bags in the province. Authorities said they were linked to criminal gangs.
"In three weeks here we have seized 1.2 tons of drugs," Interior Minister Zapata said.

Ecuador has also seen a recent rise in violence and murders related to drug trafficking. In 2021, the country seized a record 210 tons of drugs, mainly cocaine.

Ecuador: Nine dead in gang-related shooting near Colombian border

The Louisville Police said on Tuesday (April 11) said that the 23-year-old bank employee who shot dead five colleagues and wounded nine other people at his workplace had legally purchased the rifle.

The Louisville Police said on Tuesday (April 11) said that the 23-year-old bank employee who shot dead five colleagues and wounded nine other people at his workplace had legally purchased the rifle. Addressing a press conference, police chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel said the gun used to carry out the attack was bought at a local dealership on April 4. "To the mayor and everyone who is in attendance today, we have learned that the suspect in this incident was a current employee with Old National Bank. We have also learned that he purchased the weapon used in this tragic incident yesterday, April the fourth. He purchased the weapon legally from one of the local dealerships here in Louisville," Gwinn-Villaroel said, the news agency Reuters reported. "We have executed a search warrant on his residence, and we have recovered items and we cannot get into specific details on what we recovered at this time, because, again, the investigation is ongoing and we want to make sure that we're providing accurate information," Gwinn-Villaroel added. The shooter was identified as Connor Sturgeon, who was employed with the bank at the time of the shooting. Sturgeon was fatally shot at the scene but it was unclear whether he was slain by police or took his own life. The Louisville Police chief also told reporters on Tuesday the shooting was targeted, adding “The evil that was played out on yesterday, taking those lives and injuring so many others is just truly unfortunate.” Bodycam video of police response released The police released the bodycam video of officers responding to the bank shooting on Monday. The video showed tense moments between police officers and the shooter Connor Sturgeon, CNN reported on Tuesday. The video started with Officer Nickolas Wilt who drove up to the scene with his training officer Cory Galloway. The police said that Wilt was shot in the head as he ran towards the gunshots police were facing as they arrived. Wilt is in critical condition. The officer's camera showed him following Galloway up the outside steps to the bank. The video cuts off before he is shot. On the other hand, camera footage from Galloway, who was also shot, showed him taking fire, then retreating to a safe position behind a planter as officers talked about how they could not see the shooter and that he is shooting through windows in the front of the bank. Louisville bank shooting: Police say shooter legally purchased rifle

Erling Haaland scored his 45th goal of the season as Manchester City took a commanding 3-0 first leg lead over Bayern Munich in their Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday.

Rodri and Bernardo Silva were also on target for the English champions, who took a giant stride towards finally conquering Europe for the first time.

Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel got the better of Guardiola and City when Chelsea manager in the 2021 final.

But in 11 meetings between the two coaches, Guardiola has still only lost three times and got the better of his German counterpart in a heavyweight clash between two of the favourites to win the competition.

Guardiola has been regularly criticised for overly tinkering with his side when it comes to the crunch in the Champions League knockout stages.

But it was Tuchel who made some bold calls with his team selection as Thomas Mueller and Sadio Mane were left on the bench, alongside Joao Cancelo on his return to the Etihad after joining Bayern on loan in January.

City fought off interest from Bayern among other European giants to win the race to sign Erling Haaland a year ago for nights like this.

The 22-year-old duly delivered in the end but uncharacteristically fluffed his lines with the first big chance of the game when his weak shot was straight at Yann Sommer.

At the other end, City were grateful to a brilliant block from Ruben Dias to prevent Jamal Musiala putting Bayern in front.

Rodri then showed the forwards how it is done as the Spaniard took aim from long range on his weaker left foot and curled a sumptuous shot into the top corner.

Bayern picked up Sommer in the January window as an emergency measure after Manuel Neuer's season was ended by a skiing accident.

The Swiss international proved the value of that move with a number of vital saves to keep Bayern in the tie, starting with an outstretched leg to deny Ilkay Gundogan.

Leroy Sane was also returning to the Etihad after four years at City and three times the Bayern winger came close to haunting his former club either side of half-time.

Sane flashed a shot wide from distance before the break and was denied by two big saves from Ederson early in the second half.

Bayern were made to regret not making their bright start to the second period count as Matthijs de Ligt and Kingsley Coman had headers from close range blocked by desperate City defending.

Instead, City turned the screw in the final quarter to take a potentially decisive lead to Bavaria next week.

Haaland showed there is more to his game than goals with a perfectly weighted cross for Silva to head in City's second 20 minutes from time.

Sommer then produced a fine stop low to his left to turn Julian Alvarez's shot to safety.

But City were not to be denied their third and Haaland his goal as the Norwegian stretched out a telescopic leg to turn John Stones' knockdown beyond Sommer.

Alvarez fired another effort inches wide and Sommer needed finger tips to turn over Rodri's header as City went in search of a final flourish.

But Bayern will need one of the Champions League's all-time great comebacks in eight days' time if City are to be denied a third consecutive semi-final.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday (April 10) reinstated Defence Minister Yoav Gallant. Addressing a press conference, Netanyahu said the two resolved their disagreement over Gallant's public call last month for a halt to the government's bitterly divisive judicial overhaul plan which he said became a threat to Israel's security. "I've decided to put our differences behind us," Netanyahu said, adding he and Gallant worked closely together throughout the last two weeks.

"Gallant remains in his post and we will continue to work together for the safety of the citizens of Israel," he told reporters.

On March 26, the prime minister's decision to sack Gallant triggered mass protests. However, a report by the news agency Reuters on April 3 said Netanyahu delayed the dismissal of his defence minister.

On Monday, Netanyahu said he would restore calm and security to Israel following rising tensions over the last week. The country has witnessed heavy clashes, shootings, rocket strikes and a car-ramming attack since last week.

A day after the Israeli police stormed the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem, over 30 rockets were fired from Lebanon into Israel, an attack which the Israeli army said was most likely carried out by Hamas. Israel then responded by striking the Gaza Strip and southern Lebanon, targeting terror infrastructures that it said belonged to Hamas.

And last Friday, an Italian tourist was killed and seven others injured in a car-ramming attack in Tel Aviv.

This latest surge in unrest comes after Prime Minister Netanyahu announced a "pause" for dialogue on judicial reform legislation. Citing sources, the news agency AFP reported on Monday that the Israel-Palestine conflict this year claimed the lives of at least 94 Palestinians, 19 Israelis, one Ukrainian, and one Italian.

'We will continue to work together': Israel PM Netanyahu reinstates Defence Minister Gallant

The major leak of classified US documents, which has caused concerns among international governments, might have started in a chatroom on a social media platform popular with games. According to a report by the Associated Press on Tuesday (April 11), a discussion held on Discord originally to talk about a range of topics turned to the ongoing war in Ukraine. One member of this chat said that an unidentified poster shared documents that were allegedly classified, first typing them out with the poster’s thoughts, and then beginning to post images of papers with folds in them.

The posts appeared to have gone unnoticed outside of the chat until a few weeks back when they started circulating more widely on social media. The records provided startling and surprisingly timely details of the US and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's (NATO) assistance to Ukraine. The report said the records also provided clues about efforts to assist Ukraine in its war with Russia.

The images of the documents leaked on Discord included a top-secret analysis of deepening intelligence ties between Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) and agencies in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Citing signals intelligence, the March analysis said that FBS officers were caught claiming that the UAE agreed with Moscow to work together against US and UK intelligence agencies. The news agency also saw an analysis of what might happen in the Ukraine war in certain scenarios if Russian President Vladimir Putin or Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky were to die.

The Associated Press interviewed a person who he said was a member of this Discord chat group. The person, 18, did not wish to be identified. Bellingcat, a Netherlands-based investigative journalism group, also spoke to this person and two others in the chatroom called “Thug Shaker Central.”

The poster further said that the person who first posted the documents, did not appear to be driven by ideology or to expose government secrets broadly, but rather to impress people in their group.

ALSO READ | Explained: Why the US is worried about latest leak of secret documents The images of the documents leaked on Discord included a top-secret analysis of deepening intelligence ties between Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) and agencies in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Bellingcat, a Netherlands-based investigative journalism group, also spoke to this person and two others in the chatroom called “Thug Shaker Central.” Last Saturday, Bellingcat said that documents from the chatroom appear to have been shared in another chatroom called “WowMao.” And from WowMao, the documents spread widely and were reported by many media outlets. Major leak of classified US documents may have started in chatroom for gamers: Report

Provincial snap elections are not in Pakistan's national interest given its economic turmoil and security situation, the country's finance minister said on Monday, in defiance of an order by the country's supreme court.

His comments raise the risk of constitutional deadlock to compound the country's political and economic upheaval

In a victory for former prime minister Imran Khan, the court last week mandated the elections, which have been rejected by parliament.

The court set Monday as the deadline for the government to issue funds - 21 billion Pakistani rupees ($73.4 million) - to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and told the ECP to report back to it on Tuesday.

Finance Minister Ishaq Dar on Monday put forward a financial bill to seek a vote on whether to approve the election funding. It was not clear when a vote would take place.

"The country's economic, security and internal conditions demand that snap polls aren't in the national interest," he said in a televised speech to parliament.

He suggested holding the elections together in all provinces and national seats, saying that would reduce logistics and security expenses, which according to the house speaker was later adopted in a resolution in the parliament.

The supreme court ordered snap polls in the most populated Punjab province to be held on May 14, and said a date could be agreed later for the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, pending some technical issues.

Khan had ordered the dissolution of local governments run by his party in the two provinces to try to force the government to hold elections that are not due until October across the country.

He has been campaigning across Pakistan since he was ousted in a parliamentary no confidence vote in April last year.

The country's crises have worsened meanwhile.

To try to counter a resurgence in attacks, the government over the weekend also announced a country-wide military offensive against Islamist militants.

Pakistan is also in danger of defaulting on its debt. An International Monetary Fund bailout has been stalled since November, while its central bank's foreign exchange reserves would cover just four weeks of imports, and inflation exceeds 35%.

Pakistan's finance minister opposes snap polls mandated by top court

The White House said on Monday (April 10) that it is prepared to fight and protect reproductive rights after Texas federal judge’s ruling suspended approval of the abortion pill Mifepristone. Mifepristone is part of a two-drug regimen for medication abortions in the first ten weeks of pregnancy. The pill accounts for over half of all abortions in the US.

Addressing a press conference, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre called the court ruling dangerous.

"Over the weekend, a single court in Texas has taken the dangerous steps of rejecting FDA's (Food and Drug Administration) scientific approval of Mifepristone, a medication that has been on the market for more than 20 years and is used safely in more than 60 countries, providing critical care for women. This court decision threatens access to this medication, which is used not only for abortion but also for other critical purposes, like helping women manage miscarriages," she said.

Jean-Pierre added the ruling further strips away Americans' fundamental freedoms and interferes with a woman's ability to make decisions about her own body. The White House press secretary clarified that Mifepristone continues to be available and approved for the time being.

Last Friday (April 10), Texas federal judge Matthew Kacsmaryk ruled that the FDA exceeded its authority by ignoring the abortion pill's risks and relying on "plainly unsound reasoning" when approving it.

Earlier on Monday, the US government appealed the judge's decision to suspend the FDA's 23-year-old approval of Mifepristone. In a court filing, the Justice Department said that the district court's extraordinary and unprecedented order should be stayed pending appeal, the news agency AFP reported.

"If allowed to take effect, the court's order would thwart FDA's scientific judgment and severely harm women," the filing added.

Also on Monday, around 400 pharmaceutical executives including Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla signed the letter criticising the April 10 ruling. The decision ignores decades of scientific evidence and legal precedent, the letter said, adding Judge Kacsmaryk's act of judicial interference set a precedent for diminishing FDA's authority over drug approvals.

On Monday (April 10), a number of masked protesters in Ireland attacked police with petrol bombs and other objects at a parade opposing the Good Friday peace accord in Londonderry, according to the police. The incident came just a day before United States President Joe Biden visits Belfast, Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland: Petrol bombs thrown at police vehicle in Londonderry on eve of US president's visit

Israeli officials said on Friday (April 7) that an Italian tourist was killed and seven others were injured in a terror attack at a promenade near the seashore in Tel Aviv when a driver rammed his car into a group of tourists. Speaking to the news agency AFP, a police spokesperson said, "The terrorist was neutralised, it was a terror attack against civilians, a car ramming attack".

The deceased tourist was later identified as Italian national Alessandro Parini, a 35-year-old lawyer from Rome. The wounded victims were also tourists from Italy and the United Kingdom, according to hospital officials. However, they were not named, Times of Israel newspaper reported.

Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed solidarity with Israel following the 'cowardly attack' in Tel Aviv. “Deep sorrow and condolences for the death of one of our nationals, Alessandro Parini, in the terrorist attack that took place in the evening in Tel Aviv. Condolences to the victim’s family, to the wounded, and solidarity with the State of Israel for the cowardly attack,” Meloni wrote on Twitter.

The 'terrorist' was later named Yousef Abu Jaber, 45, a resident of Kafr Qassem. He reportedly had no known prior security offences, the newspaper reported. Officials of Israel's security agency Shin Bet and police were at Jaber’s home in the central Arab-majority city on Friday night to question his family members.

According to the police, the driver rammed into a group of people near a popular seaside park. Surveillance camera footage of the incident, which was shared on social media, purportedly showed the attacker’s vehicle speeding toward pedestrians walking near the park, before overturning.

The US State Department also condemned the Tel Aviv attack with Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel saying that the US “stands with the government and people of Israel.”
