Karim Benzema struck a hat-trick as Real Madrid hammered Barcelona 4-0 at Camp Nou to reach the Copa del Rey final on Wednesday, progressing 4-1 on aggregate.

Vinicius Junior opened the scoring just before the break as Carlo Ancelotti's side mounted a spectacular comeback from their one-goal semi-final first leg deficit, with Benzema adding a second-half treble.

After netting three at the weekend against Real Valladolid in La Liga, Benzema repeated the trick to humiliate Barcelona on a painful night for coach Xavi Hernandez in front of almost 95,000 distraught fans.

Los Blancos trail their arch-rivals by 12 points in La Liga and were beaten by Barca in the Spanish Super Cup final in January, but triumphed here to reach the Copa final for the first time since 2014, where they will face Osasuna.

Madrid turfed out the record 31-time cup winners with a muscular performance on a spiky night in Barcelona, where they also ended a demoralising run of three consecutive Clasico defeats.

Ancelotti's team dominated in the first leg but fell to a 1-0 defeat after Eder Militao's own goal, and suffered a last-gasp sucker punch in La Liga against Barcelona in March, when the Catalans snatched a late win.

Ancelotti started an attacking side with Toni Kroos as the deepest midfielder and Eduardo Camavinga at left-back, as Los Blancos sought to overturn their narrow deficit.

Xavi, without Ousmane Dembele, Pedri, Frenkie de Jong and Andreas Christensen, stuck to the same formula that has served Barca well against Madrid in recent months, with four midfielders including Gavi, nominally starting on the left wing.

The game started at a furious pace and intensity, both teams keen to reach the final, but absolutely desperate not to be knocked out by the other.

Barcelona appealed furiously for a penalty in the first few minutes as David Alaba blocked Gavi's cross with his arm, but it was planted on the floor for balance.

The Austrian defender blocked Sergi Roberto's effort, while Vinicius and Ronald Araujo resumed their usual running battle at the other end.

Barca coach Xavi was booked for protesting a foul on Franck Kessie as tempers boiled over.

Thousands of Barcelona fans chanted Lionel Messi's name in the 10th minute, amid speculation he could leave Paris Saint-Germain, and they would have dearly loved some of the Argentine's magic.

Vinicius and Gavi were both shown yellow cards as they clashed, with referee Juan Martinez Munuera quick on the scene to try and calm things down.

Lethal Madrid

Los Blancos took the lead in stoppage time at the end of the first half, when they showed their prowess on the counter-attack.

Thibaut Courtois made a fine save to deny Robert Lewandowski and exactly 20 seconds later, Vinicius struck at the other end.

Rodrygo cut the ball back to the forward, who squeezed a shot home despite Jules Kounde's best attempt at a goal-line clearance. Benzema was on hand to make sure, but Vinicius's effort had already crossed the line.

The French forward soon was able to pounce though, finishing lethally from the edge of the box in an ocean of space after Luka Modric easily skipped away from Sergi Roberto.

Benzema slotted home his second from the penalty spot before the hour mark, sending Marc-Andre ter Stegen the wrong way after Kessie clumsily fouled Vinicius.

Xavi threw on Ansu Fati to try and spark a comeback of their own, but Barcelona could not find a way through.

It was one-way traffic as Ter Stegen denied Marco Asensio and then Benzema completed his hat-trick with a cool finish after a fine dribble and pass by Vinicius.

Madrid have lifted the trophy on 19 occasions, while their opponents Osasuna have never won it, securing passage to their second final after beating Athletic Bilbao on Tuesday.

Former United States president Donald Trump, who on Tuesday (April 4) pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, is making headlines again. Subscribers to Trump's mailing list received a breaking alert: “NEW ITEM, MUGSHOT.” The email sent to the supporters showed merchandise in Trump's official store- a plain white T-shirt featuring a doctored photo of the former president getting booked. A fake chart behind Trump showed his height as 6ft 5in.

Never thought this could happen in America: Donald Trump's first remarks following arraignment

Several lawmakers in the US on Tuesday (April 4) reacted to former president Donald Trump's arraignment. Trump, 76, was charged with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records stemming from three pre-election hush-money cases. Trump has pleaded not guilty to all counts. "Not guilty," the former president said when asked how he pleaded.

In a statement, Senator Mitt Romney, a sharp critic of Trump, said he believed that Trump’s character and conduct make him unfit for office, but added that the case was politically motivated.

"Even so, I believe the New York prosecutor has stretched to reach felony criminal charges in order to fit a political agenda. No one is above the law, not even former presidents, but everyone is entitled to equal treatment under the law."

"The prosecutor’s overreach sets a dangerous precedent for criminalising political opponents and damages the public’s faith in our justice system," Romney said, adding that charges and evidence would be duly considered and the outcome decided by a jury with an obligation to fulfil its responsibility with the utmost care and impartiality.

How American lawmakers reacted to Donald Trump's arraignment

The Israeli Police said early Wednesday (April 5) that they entered the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem to dislodge "agitators". In a statement, the police said it was forced to enter the compound after agitators locked themselves inside the mosque with fireworks, sticks, and stones. "When the police entered, stones were thrown at them and fireworks were fired from inside the mosque by a large group of agitators," the statement said, adding one police official was wounded in the leg.

The Palestinian Red Crescent reported injuries following clashes but did not elaborate on how many people were hurt.

Speaking to the news agency Reuters, an elderly woman, while sitting outside the mosque struggling to catch her breath, said she was sitting on a chair reciting the Qur'an when stun grenades were hurled and one of them hit her chest.

Palestinian groups condemned Israel's attacks on worshippers, which they described as a crime.

"We warn the occupation against crossing red lines at holy sites, which will lead to a big explosion," said Nabil Abu Rudeineh, spokesperson for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Friction at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound has set off violence in recent years. The holy site is of religious significance to Jews, Muslims, as well as Christians.

The recent clashes at the mosque come after a man detained by the Israeli police near the compound on April 1 grabbed an officer's gun and fired it, prompting the unit to shoot him dead. The slain man was identified as Mohammad Al-Osaibi. A day later, mourners gathered in the Bedouin town of Hura, southern Israel for the funeral of Al-Osaibi.

Israel: Clashes inside Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa mosque, injuries reported

Chelsea wasted a host of chances to beat Liverpool as the troubled Blues were held to a 0-0 draw on Tuesday in their first Premier League match since Graham Potter's sacking. Potter was axed on Sunday after the former Brighton manager's disastrous reign climaxed with a wretched home defeat against Aston Villa.

Chelsea are seeking their third permanent manager of the campaign, with Potter hired in September following Thomas Tuchel's shock dismissal.

In the meantime, Bruno Saltor, a member of Potter's backroom staff, made his managerial debut as Chelsea interim boss.

Bruno managed to coax a lively performance from Chelsea, but -- as was so often the case under Potter -- they paid the price for a lack of cutting edge.

Chelsea remain 11th, leaving them with an uncertain future despite the massive investment in new signings made by Chelsea owner Todd Boehly since he took over last year.

Liverpool hardly looked much better as a third successive league game without a win damaged their faint hopes of finishing in the top four.

Eighth-placed Liverpool are seven points behind fourth-placed Tottenham in the race to qualify for the Champions League.

Chelsea and Liverpool finished in the top four and met in the FA Cup and League Cup finals last season, yet less than a year later they are languishing in mid-table amid turbulent campaigns.

In response to Liverpool's dismal 4-1 defeat at Manchester City on Saturday, Klopp dropped Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold as the Reds boss made six changes.

It was Chelsea who made the stronger start of the two troubled teams and Mateo Kovacic's shot was blocked on the line by Ibrahima Konate.

Reece James saw his fierce finish disallowed for offside against Enzo Fernandez, while Wesley Fofana was narrowly off target with a headed chance.

As in the other Premier League games on Tuesday, there was a first-half pause at the Bridge for Muslim players to break their Ramadan fast.

Chelsea's Kai Havertz dragged a good chance wide from N'Golo Kante's pass immediately after the restart.

Leicester woe

Darwin Nunez and Joe Gomez forced good saves from Kepa Arrizabalaga as Liverpool finally threatened just before half-time.

Kovacic blazed a glorious chance over soon after the interval, while Havertz's effort was disallowed for handball when the German's shot hit Liverpool keeper Alisson Becker and rebounded into the net off his arm.

Leicester's first game since Brendan Rodgers' departure on Sunday ended in a 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa at the King Power Stadium.

The Foxes, led by caretaker bosses Mike Stowell and Adam Sadler after Rodgers' exit by "mutual agreement", have now gone seven league games without a win and sit second bottom of the table.

Ollie Watkins put Villa ahead in the 24th minute and although Harvey Barnes equalised after 35 minutes, Leicester's Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall was sent off in the 70th minute for a second booking.

Bertrand Traore's 87th-minute curler, his first goal for Villa since 2021, piled on the misery for Leicester.

Leeds climbed out of the relegation zone with a 2-1 win against fellow strugglers Nottingham Forest at Elland Road.

Orel Mangala bagged his first goal in English football to fire Forest ahead.

But Jack Harrison equalised eight minutes later with a close-range finish after Keylor Navas spilled Marc Roca's shot.

Luis Sinisterra put Leeds in front in first-half stoppage time, cutting inside and curling his shot into the far corner.

Leeds are two points clear of the relegation zone, while Forest are outside the bottom three on goal difference.

Third-bottom Bournemouth remain in deep trouble after a 2-0 home defeat against Brighton.

Albion took the lead in the 28th minute through teenage forward Evan Ferguson's audacious backheel, with Julio Enciso's first goal for the club wrapping up the points in injury time.

Manhattan District Attorney (DA) Alvin Bragg said on Tuesday (April 4) that he would not allow Donald Trump to get away with lawbreaking after charging the former United States president with a string of felonies over hush money payments. "These are felony crimes in New York State. No matter who you are we cannot and will not normalize serious criminal conduct," Bragg told reporters, the news agency AFP reported. "We today uphold our solemn responsibility to ensure that everyone stands equal before the law," Bragg added. Bragg said that Trump arranged for the payment of $130,000 to porn actor Stormy Daniels to buy her silence about a 2006 sexual encounter. A payment of $30,000 was made through an intermediary to a former Trump Tower doorman who was claiming that the former president had fathered a child out of wedlock, Bragg said. "Not guilty," Trump said in a clear voice inside the Manhattan courtroom. The former president was released from custody without any pre-trial restrictions at the arraignment. Judge Juan Merchan said during the hearing that a trial could potentially start in January 2024, although Trump's lawyers indicated they would rather push it back to the spring. Ukraine's Air Force command said early Tuesday (April 4) that Russia launched 17 Iranian-made Shahed drones to attack the war-torn country overnight, adding that 14 of these drones were destroyed, the news agency Reuters reported. Taking to Telegram, the command said in a statement, "In total, up to 17 launches of UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) attacks were recorded, presumably from the eastern coast area of the Sea of Azov." The drones struck the port of Odessa, local authorities said, adding there was damage. Taking to Facebook, the authorities said in a statement, "The enemy has just struck Odessa and the Odessa district with attack UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles)." "There is damage," the statement said. Citing Yuriy Kruk, the head of the Odessa district military administration, the statement added that Ukraine's air defence forces were at work and warned of a possible second wave of attacks. The statement did not provide any further details. Since the beginning of the Russian offensive in February last year, Odessa has been bombed several times by Russian forces. On March 9, local authorities said that Russian strikes targeted the southern Odessa region. Governor Maksym Marchneko said that missiles had hit the energy infrastructure of the region as well as damaged residential buildings. Marchneko added that there were no casualties, and that power supply restrictions were in place. The latest drone strikes in Ukraine come as fierce fighting continues in and around Bakhmut. The battle for the city has been one of the bloodiest of the conflict with several casualties on both sides. Last Sunday, Russian mercenary group Wagner's chief Yevgeny Prigozhin said that his troops raised a Russian flag on the city-centre administrative building. However, the Ukrainian military said, fighting was still raging around the city council building, as well as in other nearby towns. Speaking to Reuters, Serhiy Cherevatyi, spokesperson for the eastern military command, said on Monday, "Bakhmut is Ukrainian and they have not captured anything and are very far from doing that." "They raised the flag over some kind of toilet. They attached it to the side of who knows what hung their rag and said they had captured the city. Well good, let them think they've taken it," Cherevatyi added. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Share your stories and opinions with us here.
