Hours after China announced the launch of military drills spanning three days, Taiwan's defence ministry said that eight Chinese warships and 42 fighter jets were spotted around the island on Saturday.

The ministry expressed "solemn condemnation of such irrational actions", adding the detections — which included 29 jets crossing Taiwan's median line — took place between 6 am and 11 am local time, reports AFP news agency.

Earlier in the day, China announced that it was launching three days of military drills in the Taiwan Strait. According to the People's Liberation Army's Eastern Theatre Command, "United Sharp Sword" would run from April 8 to 10 for "combat preparedness." In a PLA statement, Senior Colonel Shi Yi, spokesman for the Eastern Theatre Command, said the exercise would involve police patrol drills in the Taiwan Strait, "to the north and south of Taiwan, and in the sea and airspace to the east of Taiwan".

The exact location of these drills is not yet known.

China's military is rehearsing an "encirclement" of Taiwan during the drills, state media reported. "The task force will simultaneously organise patrols and advances around Taiwan island, shaping an all-round encirclement and deterrence posture," CCTV said.

China views self-ruled Taiwan as part of its territory and has vowed to one day seize it, by force if necessary.

The announcement of the military drills comes after Taiwanese President Tsai In-wen met US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in California on Wednesday. Hours before the meeting, Beijing sent its Shandong aircraft carrier through Taiwan's southeastern waters on its way to the western Pacific.

On Saturday, Taiwan's defence ministry said it detected three warships and 13 Chinese aircraft around the island, following President Tsai's return from the US.

The ministry said three ships and 13 aircraft had been detected around Taiwan by 6 am local time (2200 GMT) on Saturday and "4 of the detected aircraft had crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait and entered Taiwan's southeast ADIZ".

On Thursday, China had deployed warships around Taiwan as it vowed a firm and forceful response to the Tsai-McCarthy meeting.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Friday (April 7) that Moscow is in favour of resuming multilateral negotiations to find a solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict, which would involve the Quartet on the Middle East and the Arab League, according to a report by the TASS news agency. Speaking to reporters after holding talks with his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu, Lavrov said "We have long been advocating to resume the multilateral process for the Israeli-Palestinian settlement, as there is a universally recognized collective mediator, which is the Quartet comprising Russia, the United States, the European Union and the United Nations."

"It is in this very framework, with the mandatory involvement of the Arab League, that we can, in practice and with hope for some kind of result, search for agreements that should be based on the principles of the two-state solution, as they are formulated in documents," he added.

Russia calls for multilateral negotiations to resolve Israel-Palestine conflict: Lavrov

A federal judge in the United States on Friday (April 7) halted the approval of the abortion pill mifepristone. The 67-page ruling by US District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk in Texas allows the Joe Biden administration one week to appeal the decision, according to court documents.

Kacsmaryk's ruling is a preliminary injunction that would essentially ban the sale of mifepristone while the case before him continues, according to a report by the news agency Reuters. The judge, appointed to the bench by former president Donald Trump, did not rule on the merits of the challenge. The injunction will remain in place until the judge makes a final judgment or it is reversed on appeal.

Some abortion providers said that if mifepristone is unavailable, they would switch to a regimen using only misoprostol for a medication abortion, Reuters reported.

Four anti-abortion groups, headed by the Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine and four anti-abortion doctors, sued the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in November last year, contending the agency used improper process when it approved mifepristone back in 2000 and did not adequately consider the drug's safety when used by girls under the age of 18 to terminate pregnancy.

Mifepristone is part of the regimen in the US for medication abortions, which accounts for over half of all abortions in the country.

Responding to the lawsuit, the Biden administration said the drug's approval was well supported by science, and that the challenge comes much too late. Vice President Kamala Harris said the ruling undermines the FDA's "ability to approve safe and effective medications... based on science, not politics."

Justice department vows to appeal the ruling

The US Justice department said on Friday that it would appeal the ruling by Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk, adding it strongly disagrees with the decision, the news agency AFP reported.

"The Justice Department strongly disagrees with the decision...and will be appealing the court’s decision and seeking a stay pending appeal," said Attorney General Merrick Garland.

Meanwhile, Planned Parenthood, which is one of the largest pro-abortion groups in the US, also slammed Friday's court ruling.

"The judge's decision in Texas today blocking the (Food and Drug Administration’s) approval of mifepristone is an outrage and exposes the weaponisation of our judicial system to further restrict abortion nationwide," the federation's President Alexis McGill Johnson said in a statement.

Johnson said that people should be enraged that one judge can unilaterally reject medical evidence and overrule the FDA's approval of a medication that has been safely and effectively used for over 20 years.

"This decision could threaten the FDA’s role in this country’s public health system, and — if allowed to stand — will have broad and unprecedented consequences that reach far beyond abortion," Johnson added.

A man in China was sentenced to nine years in prison on Friday (April 7) for abusing and unlawfully detaining his wife, according to a report by the news agency Associated Press. Five other human traffickers were also sent to prison. The abuse of the woman “Xiaohuamei,” or Little Plum Blossom, raised widespread indignation in the country in February 2022. The story appeared on Chinese social media despite digital and human censors and prompted commentators to exhort national media to highlight the scandal.

The woman's husband was jailed for nine years for torture, abuse and keeping her captive. Five others received terms ranging from eight to 13 years.

And following Friday's sentencing, the case became one of the most searched topics on Weibo, with many complaining the imprisonment for the man was too lenient.

“Only nine years? Nine years for ruining her life? Go to hell really,” a Weibo user wrote.

In a statement, the court in Xuzhou city said the man Dong Zhimin and his father bought Little Plum Blossom in the late 1990s for $727 (5,000 yuan) and that he had abused her in recent years by chaining her around the neck and tying her with pieces of cloth and ropes. The court said the woman suffered from hunger and lived in a place without water or electricity.

The woman is still being treated in a hospital.

“Dong Zhimin’s abuse has caused serious harm to Little Plum Blossom’s health. After examination, Little Plum Blossom was diagnosed with schizophrenia,” the court said on Friday.

Five other people were sentenced to prison for between eight and 13 years and were fined for trafficking the woman decades back. Citing an investigation, the report said that the woman was first brought to Jiangsu province from Yunnan province after she was abducted by two of the five people in early 1998. They sold her to a farmer for $727.

After living with the farmer, the woman went missing and was found by a couple in Henan province in June 1998. They sold her to two other people for $436 and then the pair sold her to Dongs in Feng County in Jiangsu.

The court said on Friday that the wife of the couple was not charged because the impact of her role was considered relatively minor. However, her husband and the pair who sold the woman to Dongs were among the five charged and sentenced.

United States President Joe Biden is unlikely to visit Nagasaki during his trip to Japan for a Group of Seven (G7) summit in Hiroshima in May due to scheduling conflicts. According to a report by the Kyodo News agency on Thursday (April 6), Biden would have been the first sitting American president to have visited the southwestern Japanese city, which the US hit with an atomic bomb after dropping one on Hiroshima in August 1945 in the final days of World War II.

Sources told Kyodo News that Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida hoped he and Biden could send a message to the world from Hiroshima and Nagasaki towards a world free of nuclear weapons, with concerns growing over whether Russian President Vladimir Putin will use such destructive arms in his country's war against Ukraine.

Prime Minister Kishida, who put forward his vision of a world free of nuclear weapons since taking office in October 2021, was eager to accompany Biden on his visit to Nagasaki, the sources added. However, a Japanese government source told the news agency that it was difficult to adjust the US President's itinerary to visit Nagasaki.

Shigemitsu Tanaka, the head of the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Survivors Council said that as president of a "country that developed and used nuclear weapons, I wanted (Biden) to know the reality of the atomic bombing" in the city."

With Russia's ongoing offensive in Ukraine, Tanaka added that Biden should have decided to visit Nagasaki with Moscow's threat of nuclear use increasing.

Back in 2016, then-US president Barack Obama became the first sitting American president to visit Hiroshima on the occasion of the previous G-7 summit in Japan. Kishida, who was Japan's then foreign minister, along with then prime minister Shinzo Abe.

On March 21, Japanese PM Kishida met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Kishida had been the only leader of the G7 countries who had not visited war-torn Ukraine.

Zelensky said in a joint news conference with Kishida that he would join an upcoming G7 summit in Japan via an online link following an invitation from the Japanese prime minister.

US President Biden unlikely to visit Nagasaki during Japan trip for G7: Report

The Israeli Army said on Friday (April 7) that it was carrying out strikes in Lebanon from where 34 rockets were fired at Israel on Thursday. In a statement issued at 4.07 am (01.07 GMT), the army said it was striking in Lebanon without providing any further details, the news agency AFP reported. At least three explosions were heard in Lebanon's Tyre region. Speaking to AFP, a resident from a Palestinian refugee camp near Tyre said at least two shells fell near the camp, adding, he heard explosions.

Earlier, the Israeli army launched air strikes on the Gaza Strip as Jerusalem vowed to retaliate over the cross-border rockets fired from Lebanon. The army said it had hit two tunnels and "two weapon manufacturing sites" belonging to Hamas "as a response to the security violations of Hamas during the last few days."

Tensions have soared between Israelis and Palestinians prompting condemnations and calls for restraint from abroad. Thirty-four rockets were fired at Israel on the Jewish holiday of Passover- the largest escalation since Israel and Hezbollah fought a war in 2006. The army blamed the Palestinian groups for the attacks.

Idaho has become the first state to pass a law restricting travel for abortions. On Wednesday (April 5), Governor Brad Little signed a bill that makes it illegal for an adult to help a minor get an abortion without parental consent, the news agency Associated Press reported on Thursday.

Idaho has become the first state to pass a law restricting travel for abortions. On Wednesday (April 5), Governor Brad Little signed a bill that makes it illegal for an adult to help a minor get an abortion without parental consent, the news agency Associated Press reported on Thursday. The abortion trafficking law is the first of its kind in the United States. The law makes it illegal to either obtain abortion pills for a minor or to help them leave the state for an abortion without their parents' knowledge and consent. Anyone convicted will face two to five years in prison and could also be sued by the minor’s parent or guardian. The law states that parents who raped their child will not be able to sue, though the criminal penalties for anyone who helped the minor obtain an abortion will remain in effect. ALSO READ | Wyoming district court judge halts abortion ban days after it came into effect The law also gives the attorney general the ability to prosecute someone for alleged violations of the law, even if the county prosecutor — who would normally be responsible for filing a criminal case — declines to prosecute. In a statement, the Planned Parenthood Federation of America said that the law raises pressing concerns about the state’s legal ability to restrict residents from travelling to neighbouring states to access abortion care. "Banning abortion wasn’t enough for these anti-abortion zealots. They will stop at nothing to control what we do and where we go — even if it means holding people, hostage, when trying to access essential health services. Young people seeking abortion deserve our compassion and support, not the extreme government overreach this law sanctions," Alexis McGill Johnson, the federation's president, said in the statement. Idaho, like many other American states, has multiple abortion laws on the books. Two Idaho doctors and a regional Planned Parenthood affiliate sued Wednesday over the state’s interpretation of another strict abortion ban, contending it unconstitutionally limits interstate travel for abortions, the Associated Press reported. The ban makes it illegal for physicians to use “any means to intentionally terminate the clinically diagnosable pregnancy of a woman,” if they know the termination will reasonably cause the death of the unborn child. It went into effect shortly after the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last year. Idaho has already effectively banned abortion in all stages of pregnancy and is one of a handful of states that already have laws penalising those who help people of any age obtain abortions. China's foreign ministry on Thursday (April 6) condemned the meeting between US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen in California. The ministry vowed a resolute response to the high-level meeting. "In response to the seriously erroneous acts of collusion between the United States and Taiwan, China will take resolute and effective measures to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity," the ministry said in a statement published by the news agency Xinhua. The ministry further said that Wednesday's meeting gravely violated the one-China principle. "The Taiwan question is at the very core of China's core interests and the first red line that must not be crossed in China-US relations," it added. Earlier too, Beijing had repeatedly warned against the meeting between McCarthy and Tsai. The ministry said the Chinese ships led by the carrier, the Shandong, passed through the Bashi Channel, adding they were going for training in the Western Pacific. Beijing has not commented on this development yet. US must continue arms sales to Taiwan: McCarthy Following his meeting with Taiwanese President Tsai, US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said that Washington must continue its arms sales to Taiwan and strengthen economic cooperation with trade and technology. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Wednesday (April 5) called the attack with an axe at a pre-school in Santa Catarina a 'monstrosity', a report by the news agency Reuters said. During a meeting with government ministers and governors in Brasilia, President Lula said, "Today is a day that leaves us human beings angry because of a figure that seems to be a human: it has a head, arms, legs, and eyes, but that committed a monstrosity that all of us who are fathers, mothers, grandparents, uncles would never imagine could happen."

Lula said the attacker must have come from another planet, a hate planet and had the stupidity to kill four children with an axe.

“I don’t have words to comfort the families; whoever has lost a relative knows there are no words. But I think it is important for us to do a gesture, so let’s have a minute of silence in honour of those children who were victims of that barbarity,” the president added.

The attacker, a 25-year-old man, armed with a small axe climbed over a wall into the Cantinho do Bom Pastor daycare centre in the city of Blumenau, killing four children and injuring five others.

According to the police, said three boys - two aged 4 and one aged 5 - and one girl aged 7 were killed. The police added that four of the injured children between the ages of 3 to 5 were hospitalised, and the fifth child had minor injuries.

Local security chief Marcio Alberto Filippi told reporters the attacker turned himself in to police after the rampage.

Meanwhile, residents in Blumenau gathered for a candlelight vigil to mourn the children killed. Visuals shared by the news agency Reuters showed family and friends of the victims and survivors praying, leaving flowers, and lighting candles outside the school.

This attack came nearly a week after a 13-year-old student stabbed a teacher to death and wounded five others in a school in Sao Paulo.

The Israeli police clashed with Palestinians at Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa Mosque a second time on Wednesday (April 5) as the confrontations triggered a cross-border exchange of fire in Gaza and stoked fears of further violence. According to the Palestinian Red Crescent, six people were injured, the news agency Reuters reported. The staff of the Waqf, the Jordanian-appointed Islamic organisation managing the complex, said that in the second instance, the police entered the mosque compound late at night and tried to evacuate worshippers, using stun grenades and firing rubber bullets.

Witnesses, meanwhile, said that worshippers threw objects at the police. Issuing a statement, the police said that dozens of youngsters brought rocks and firecrackers into the mosque and had tried to barricade themselves inside. But Waqf said the police entered the mosque before prayers were over.

“Israel’s raid into Al-Aqsa mosque, its assault on worshippers, is a slap to recent US efforts which tried to create calm and stability during the month of Ramadan,” a spokesperson for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Israeli police entered the mosque compound to dislodge agitators. The police said it was forced to enter the compound after agitators locked themselves inside the mosque with fireworks, sticks, and stones. Twelve people were injured in this clash, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent while two Israeli police officers were hurt.

Following the first clash, Palestinian militants fired at least nine rockets from Gaza into Israel, drawing air strikes that Jerusalem said targeted weapon production sites for Hamas. No casualties were reported on either side of the Gaza border, Reuters reported on Wednesday.

And just before the second clash, two more rockets were fired from Gaza. Of these, one fell short and the other in an open space, the Israeli military said.
