The Kuki People's Alliance (KPA), which is a partner of the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in India, withdrew support from the N. Biren Singh-led government in the violence-hit Northeastern state of Manipur on Sunday (August 6). The KPA has two seats in the Manipur assembly. According to a report by the Times of India, KPA President Tongmang Haokip wrote to state governor Anusuiya Uikey and said, "After careful consideration of the current conflagration, the continued support for the incumbent government of Manipur led by Chief Minister N. Biren Singh is no longer fructuous." "Accordingly, the support of the KPA to the government of Manipur is hereby withdrawn and can be considered null and void," the letter added. The KPA's withdrawal from the Manipur government comes as clashes have been going on in the state for over five months now. The report said that earlier on Sunday, community leaders stated that most Kuki MLAs irrespective of their party affiliations were likely to attend the Manipur assembly session slated to be called on August 21 because of the violence. Fresh violence in Manipur kills 3, houses set ablaze Fresh incidents of violence were reported in Manipur on Thursday in which three people were killed, houses were set ablaze and vehicles were damaged. Speaking to the news agency Reuters late Friday, a police spokesperson said the victims belonged to the majority Metei community in the state's Bishnupur district. Violence in Manipur erupted on May 3, after a court ordered the state to consider extending to the majority Meitei population special economic benefits and quotas in government jobs and education that up to now have been reserved for the tribal Kuki people. Over 180 people have been killed and thousands have left their homes. Locals build bunkers to protect kin Locals in Manipur's Phayeng village, who largely belong to the Meitei community, have built bunkers to protect their families and are guarding their village round the clock in shifts. Phayeng, which is located in the West Imphal district, is a bordering village for both the disputed communities including the Meitei and Kuki. Speaking to Reuters, Devin, a bunker guard said on Sunday, "They (other tribe) start attacking our Meitei community and after that we are guarding this...after that we are guarding our village and plus there are so many...we are...just like bunker...we are making here just on a way through this forest area…we are guarding this...we are doing for the safety." North Korea's supreme leader Kim Jong Un toured key weapons factories making missile engines, artillery etc. from Thursday (August 4) to Saturday (August 5) and instructed them to boost capacity as an important part of bolstering the country's defence capabilities, the news agency Reuters reported on Sunday citing state media.

North Korea's supreme leader Kim Jong Un toured key weapons factories making missile engines, artillery etc. from Thursday (August 4) to Saturday (August 5) and instructed them to boost capacity as an important part of bolstering the country's defence capabilities, the news agency Reuters reported on Sunday citing state media. Kim's inspections included the production of engines for strategic cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), as well as shells for super large-calibre multiple-rocket launchers and transporter-erector-launchers. His unusual visits to arms production facilities over several days come as Pyongyang pushes to develop various strategic and conventional weapons. According to a report by the news agency KCNA, Kim cited improved precision processing and modernised automation in the production of large-calibre multiple-rocket launcher shells. Also read | North Korea an 'important partner', says Russian Defence Minister Shoigu hailing historic cooperation The supreme leader also called for mass production of various kinds of "cutting-edge strategic weapon engines... and thus make a great contribution to bringing about a revolution in developing new strategic weapons of our style," the report added. Kim was photographed firing different types of assault rifles. Inspections amid US, S. Korea preparing to hold military exercises Kim's inspections of the key weapons factories come amid the United States and South Korea preparing for their next round of military exercises planned for later in August to counter the growing North Korean threat. Tensions on the Korean Peninsula are at their highest level in years as the pace of North Korea's missile tests and the joint military drills between the US and South Korea have intensified. Possible military cooperation with Russia According to a report by the news agency Associated Press on Sunday, some experts have said that Kim's inspections of the weapons factories could be related to possible military cooperation with Russia that may involve North Korean supplies of artillery and other ammunition as Russian President Vladimir Putin reaches out to other countries for support in his government's ongoing war in Ukraine. Last month, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu was in North Korea where he and Kim discussed military issues and the regional security environment. At a large defence exhibition, Kim gave Shoigu a tour of the display of ballistic missiles and what appeared to be a new drone. The Russian defence minister also participated in a major military parade held by Pyongyang on July 27 to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of the Korean War. Cheong Seong Chang, an analyst at South Korea’s Sejong Institute, told the Associated Press that Kim’s visits to the factories likely had a dual goal of encouraging the modernisation of domestically produced weapons and examining artillery and other supplies that can possibly be exported to Russia. Kim’s comments at the artillery factory about improving the quality of shells and the need to develop new types of ammunition, which he described as key to the country’s “national defence economic work,” clearly communicate an intent for exports to Moscow, Chang added. The Supreme Court of Maldives on Sunday (August 6) barred jailed former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom to take part in next month's presidential election.

The Supreme Court of Maldives on Sunday (August 6) barred jailed former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom to take part in next month's presidential election. Yameen is currently serving an 11-year jail sentence after he was convicted on corruption and money-laundering charges. The Supreme Court's ruling is a setback for Yameen's Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), which declared Yameen as its presidential candidate before he was convicted. According to a report by the news agency AFP, the PPM had not nominated another candidate, hoping Yameen could run from prison after appealing to the apex court. Last week, the PPM challenged the Election Commission's block on his candidacy because of his jail sentence, arguing that the commission misinterpreted the constitutional prerequisites for presidential candidates. As per a report by the news agency Reuters, Justice Husnu Al Suood ruled on Sunday the poll body's decision that "Gayoom is ineligible as he doesn't meet the conditions stipulated under article 109 is the correct decision." PPM might back a proxy candidate for election President Mohamed Solih, who took charge of the top post in 2018 after defeating Yameen, is seeking a second term in office despite his Maldivian Democratic Party splitting in June after a public fallout between Solih and another former president, Mohamed Nasheed. The PPM had hoped to mount a serious challenge to Solih. However, a part source, who did not wish to be identified, told AFP that they might now back a proxy candidate. The deadline to file nominations for the presidential election was originally August 3 but was extended by four days to Monday. During his tenure as president, Yameen imprisoned or forced into exile political figures he considered a threat to his rule. He attempted to stay in office after his defeat in the 2018 election but was forced to step down following the threat of sanctions from the United States. Maldives Supreme Court bars jailed ex-president from taking part in presidential poll

Iraq's telecom ministry said on Sunday (August 6) that it has blocked the Telegram messaging app over national security concerns, and to preserve the integrity of users' data, which it said the app had mishandled. In a statement, the ministry said that it asked Telegram to close down "platforms that leak the data of the official state institutions and the personal data of citizens... but the company did not respond and did not interact with any of these requests."

"The Ministry of Communications affirms its respect for citizens' rights to freedom of expression and communication, without prejudice to the security of the state and its institutions," the statement added.

The Telegram app is widely used in Iraq for messaging but also as a source of news and for sharing content. However, some channels contain large amounts of personal data including the names, addresses, and family ties of the citizens.

Telegram has been previously blocked in several countries including Azerbaijan, China, and Cuba. In April this year, Brazil ordered a temporary suspension of the messaging app until the company complied with an order to share information on extremist and neo-Nazi groups using the platform.

The decision, announced by Judge Wellington Lopes da Silva in a court in Espirito Santo state also increased a non-compliance fine of $197,780. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, the federal police requested the suspension order after Telegram failed to comply with a previous court decision to hand over data about two neo-Nazi groups on the app that were accused of inciting violence in schools.

And because of Telegram's non-compliance with the court order, Judge da Silva said that telecommunications firms in Brazil should start to suspend access to the messaging service and downloading of the app.

Morning brief: Russia-Ukraine war updates, chaos in New York City, & more

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday (August 4) approved the use of the Zurzuvae (zuranolone) pill to treat postpartum depression (PPD) in adults.

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday (August 4) approved the use of the Zurzuvae (zuranolone) pill to treat postpartum depression (PPD) in adults. In a statement, the FDA said that the pill is to be taken once every day for 14 days during the evening with a fatty meal. The daily recommended dosage is 40 milligrams. The approval of Zurzuvae was granted to Sage Therapeutics, Inc, the statement added. Dr Tiffany Farchione, FDA’s director of psychiatric drugs, said, “Postpartum depression is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition in which women experience sadness, guilt, worthlessness—even, in severe cases, thoughts of harming themselves or their child." "And, because postpartum depression can disrupt the maternal-infant bond, it can also have consequences for the child’s physical and emotional development,” Dr Farchione added. The studies conducted for Zurzuvae's efficacy The FDA said that the efficacy of Zurzuvae for the treatment of PPD in adults was demonstrated in two studies. The participants were women with PPD who met the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders criteria for a major depressive episode and whose symptoms began in the third trimester or within four weeks of delivery. In the first study, the participants received 50 mg of Zurzuvae or placebo once daily in the evening for 14 days. In Study 2, patients received another zuranolone product that was approximately equal to 40 mg of Zurzuvae or placebo, also for 14 days. "Patients in both studies were monitored for at least four weeks after the 14-day treatment. The primary endpoint of both studies was the change in depressive symptoms using the total score from the 17-item Hamilton depression rating scale (HAMD-17), measured at day 15," the statement said. "Patients in the Zurzuvae groups showed significantly more improvement in their symptoms compared to those in the placebo groups. The treatment effect was maintained at Day 42—four weeks after the last dose of Zurzuvae," it added. What are the side effects of the drug? As per the FDA, the most common side effects of the drug include drowsiness, dizziness, diarrhoea, fatigue, and a common cold. The use of this drug may also cause suicidal thoughts and behaviour. "Zurzuvae may cause fetal harm," the statement said, adding women should use effective contraception while taking, and for one week after taking the drug. China has executed a South Korean national for drug trafficking, Beijing's foreign ministry said, the first time such a sentence has been carried out on a citizen of that country in almost a decade.

A court in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou "lawfully pronounced a verdict and executed the South Korean defendant... for drug trafficking" on Friday, the foreign ministry said in a statement.

"When defendants of different nationalities commit crimes on Chinese territory, Chinese law shall be applied equally", it added.

An official from Seoul's foreign ministry told reporters Friday that "the death penalty was carried out today for a South Korean citizen who was sentenced to death for selling drugs in China".

Beijing said the individual, who Chinese officials named as Jiang -- which would be rendered Kang in Korean -- had had their "legitimate rights and interests" protected.

South Korea expressed "regret that the death penalty has been carried out against our citizen".

"The government has made multiple requests for reconsideration or postponement of the execution on humanitarian grounds through various channels since the death sentence was announced," the official said.

It is the first execution of a South Korean drug offender by China in nine years, South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported.

The individual was arrested in China in 2014 in possession of five kilograms of methamphetamine, according to Yonhap.

He was sentenced to death in 2019, the agency said.

China, the world's top executioner, frequently carries out the death penalty by lethal injection for very serious crimes.

The Chinese legal system is tightly controlled by the ruling Communist Party and courts have a near-100 percent conviction rate in criminal cases.

Like many countries in the region, China has strict drug laws, and several foreign nationals have been handed death penalties for trafficking in recent years.

In 2020, an Australian was sentenced to death in China for drug trafficking.

According to Chinese media, he was arrested at Guangzhou airport in December 2013 with more than 7.5 kilograms of methamphetamine in his luggage.

And in 2019, China sentenced two Canadian nationals accused of drug trafficking to death at a time when relations with Ottawa were nosediving.

Seoul said Friday's execution was "unrelated to the relationship between China and South Korea".

Scouts from the United States (US) and the United Kingdom (UK) attending the World Scout Jamboree in are being removed from the official campsite in the southwestern county of Buan due to the heatwave.

Scouts from the United States (US) and the United Kingdom (UK) attending the World Scout Jamboree in are being removed from the official campsite in the southwestern county of Buan due to the heatwave. According to a report by The Guardian on Saturday (August 5), the event started this week and had drawn 43,000 young Scouts from 158 countries, with the UK having the most at 4,500. In a statement, the UK Scouts said it would start moving young people and adult volunteers to hotel accommodation over the next two days. "As we are the largest contingent, our hope is that this helps alleviate the pressure on the site overall," the statement added. The statement also said that while on the site, the UK volunteer team "worked extremely hard with the organisers, for our youth members and adult volunteers to have enough food and water to sustain them, shelter from the unusually hot weather, and toilets and washing facilities appropriate for an event of this scale.” The US contingent, meanwhile, will take part in the jamboree program on Saturday before moving to the US Army’s Garrison Humphreys near the event site on Sunday. Withdrawal a big blow to Seoul The pullout of US and UK scouts from the event will be a big blow to the South Korean authorities, which have been working all out to limit the fallout and negative coverage generated in recent days, The Guardian report also said. Responding to their withdrawal, the organising committee said, "We recognise their freedom to make decisions as Scouts and regret that they could not continue their Scouting activities [on site] to the end due to reasons such as a heatwave." Hundreds of participants already ill due to searing temperatures Hundreds of participants at the World Scout Jamboree have already fallen ill due to the searing temperatures, prompting complaints from parents over the safety of their children, the news agency Reuters reported. On Friday, the World Organization of the Scout Movement said they should consider "alternative options to end the event earlier than scheduled", and support participants until they can return to their home countries. And to calm the situation, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol ordered officials to roll out tour programmes showcasing Korean culture and nature in Seoul and other cities, available for all scouts. The Ethiopian government on Friday (August 4) declared a six-month state of emergency in the Amhara region following clashes between the country's military and local Fano militiamen.

The Ethiopian government on Friday (August 4) declared a six-month state of emergency in the Amhara region following clashes between the country's military and local Fano militiamen. In a statement, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's office said, "It was found necessary to declare a state of emergency as it had become difficult to control this outrageous activity based on the regular legal system." Fighting has been going on for several days between the military and the Fano militia. Fano fighters backed the military during a two-year civil war in the neighbouring Tigray region that ended last November, but a simmering feud in recent months has burst into the open this week. On Thursday, the region's government asked federal authorities to take appropriate measures in response to the intensifying clashes. What powers does govt have during emergency period? According to a report by the news agency Reuters late Friday, the six-month emergency allows the Ethiopian government to impose curfews, restrict movement, and ban public gatherings. The government also has the power to ban the carrying of guns and other sharp objects, make arrests and conduct searches without warrants. In a statement posted on X, formerly called Twitter, the government communication service said that the government could also close or limit the movements of media outlets it deems to be operating contrary to the emergency orders. For now, the emergency order is only for Amhara but could be imposed in other areas if needed. Intense fighting reported near university, mobile internet suspended Two residents of Amhara's second-biggest city, Gondar said on Friday that intense fighting took place the previous day near the university. Speaking to Reuters, one of the residents said, "ENDF ( Ethiopian National Defence Force) first controlled the university, but they were pushed back by Fano. They were trying to advance to the centre of the city, but they couldn't." The second resident, who is also a local official, said the military pulled back from the university but did not say why. Education Minister Berhanu Nega told a news conference that 16,000 students in Gondar were unable to do their leaving exams on Thursday. A member from the Fano militia, meanwhile, said the militiamen were trying to encircle Amhara's capital Bahir Dar, adding they had captured Merawi, a town 30 kilometres south of Bahir Dar. Mobile internet was also suspended in Gondar. Meanwhile, Ethiopian Airlines cancelled flights to three of the four airports it flies to in Amhara, an airline spokesperson said. Saudi Arabia on Friday (August 4) urged its citizens to leave Lebanon and avoid approaching areas where there have been armed clashes. In a statement, the Saudi embassy in Lebanon stressed "the importance of adhering to the Saudi travel ban to Lebanon." However, the kingdom did not specify which areas in Lebanon it was advising its citizens to avoid. Clashes have rocked Lebanon in the Palestinian camp of Ain el-Hilweh since July 29. At least 13 people, most of them militants have been killed in the fighting between rival factions. According to the United Nations agency for refugees from Palestine, Ain el-Hilweh is the largest of 12 Palestinian camps in Lebanon, hosting around 80,000 of up to 250,000 Palestinian refugees countrywide. Kuwait, UK also issue advisories Apart from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the United Kingdom (UK) also issued advisories for their citizens, the news agency Reuters reported. On Saturday, Kuwait called on its citizens in Lebanon to stay vigilant and avoid "areas of security disturbances" but stopped short of asking them to leave the country. On the other hand, the UK updated its travel advice for Lebanon, advising against "all but essential travel" to parts of Lebanon’s south near the Ain el-Hilweh camp. Head of Hezbollah urges halt to clashes On Tuesday, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, the head of Hezbollah, urged a halt to the clashes, and said, "This fighting must not continue because its repercussions are bad - for the camp's residents, for the dear Palestinian people... for the south, for all of Lebanon." Nasrallah added that anyone who could "pressure, say a word, make contact, make an effort" to secure a truce should do so.
