African penguins could go extinct by 2035 if steps are not taken to ensure their survival. According to a report by The Guardian on Friday (August 11), scientists said that by 2035, there will not be enough breeding pairs for the species to continue to survive in the wild. The report said that overfishing and environmental changes in the Indian Ocean have caused the population of fish such as sardines and anchovies to crash, leaving the penguins struggling for food.

African penguins also face the threat of disease, storms, flooding, and pollution, the report added. These penguins are known for their unusual markings and distinctive braying call, and they mostly inhabit islands off the coast of Namibia and South Africa.

Hope for survival

Despite the threat, there is hope for survival for the African penguins. Speaking to The Guardian, Dr Judy Mann from the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation said, "Gloom is for naysayers and giving up isn’t an option."

Dr Mann, who is the executive of strategic projects at the foundation, added, "If fisheries, the South African government, oil and shipping companies, scientists, conservationists, international allies and the public work together, we can stop African penguin numbers from declining every year."

Decline in population over last century

The report said that the population of African penguins has declined dramatically over the last 100 years. In the early 20th century, it is thought that there were probably several million breeding pairs. However, at present, fewer than 11,000 breeding pairs remain.

The penguin is listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature on its red list of threatened species.

The New Zealand Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) said on Friday (August 11) that it was aware of intelligence activity linked to China in and against New Zealand and the Pacific region.

The New Zealand Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) said on Friday (August 11) that it was aware of intelligence activity linked to China in and against New Zealand and the Pacific region. In its report "New Zealand's Security Threat Environment 2023," the NZSIS said this was a complex intelligence concern for Wellington. The intelligence service's report was made public for the first time as part of a government shift to better inform New Zealanders about risks the country is facing, and comes two months before a general election where foreign policy is being pushed into the electoral spotlight. "This report highlights the activities of three states in particular: the People’s Republic of China (PRC), the Islamic Republic of Iran and Russia," the report said. "NZSIS has detected interference activity from several foreign states. Most notable is the continued targeting of New Zealand’s diverse ethnic Chinese communities. We see these activities carried out by groups and individuals linked to the intelligence arm of the People’s Republic of China (PRC)," it added. 'International security environment more challenging' The NZSIS report further said that the international security environment in which New Zealand is operating is now more challenging and less predictable than has been the case in recent decades. "Strategic competition is contributing to this unpredictability, evident in both a growing assertiveness from China and in international reactions to that assertiveness, as well as through largescale conflicts such as Russia’s illegal military invasion of Ukraine," it added. 'Strongly dissatisfied with report': China The Chinese embassy in New Zealand said that it was strongly dissatisfied with the NZSIS report, adding Beijing was conducting normal exchanges with overseas Chinese citizens by international law. In a statement, the embassy said China hoped that relevant countries could create an open, inclusive and non-discriminatory environment for Chinese citizens overseas and local Chinese. The Russian embassy, meanwhile, criticised New Zealand's "interference" in Russian internal affairs by commenting publicly on the imprisonment of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny. A supermarket in Austria's Krems an der Donau was closed after a highly venomous spider was spotted. According to a report by TMZ on Thursday (August 10), the Brazilian Wandering Spider was spotted in the Penny Supermarket on Tuesday, leading to people being evacuated. The supermarket has been closed ever since. The report said that the spider is still on the loose despite an extensive search of the supermarket. The spider has reached Europe before, usually by hiding in branches of bananas being shipped to stores. During the search, officials at the Penny Supermarket sealed all banana crates. What is the Brazilian Wandering Spider? The Brazilian Wandering Spider is one of the most venomous spiders on Earth. According to Live Science, the spider's bite delivers neurotoxic venom and can be deadly to humans, especially children. The bite can also deliver long and painful erections to human males, and several studies have looked at incorporating venom into drugs for erectile dysfunction. This spider has been named the world's most venomous spider multiple times by the Guinness World Records. There are nine species of Brazilian wandering spider, all of which are nocturnal and can be found in Brazil, Live Science says. How long can the spider get? As per the Natural History Museum in Germany's Karlsruhe, the Brazilian Wandering Spiders are large with bodies reaching up to 2 inches (5 centimetres) and a leg span of up to 7 inches (18 cm). Live Science says the species vary in colour, though all are hairy mostly brown and grey, although some species have lightly coloured spots on their abdomen. The spider found in the Penn Supermarket in Krems an der Donau had a black and red colour. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Prosecutors who are with Special Counsel Jack Smith's team are seeking January 2 as the trial date for former United States president Donald Trump in the 2020 Capitol riots case.

Prosecutors who are with Special Counsel Jack Smith's team are seeking January 2 as the trial date for former United States president Donald Trump in the 2020 Capitol riots case. According to a report by the news agency Associated Press early Friday (August 11), prosecutors said in court papers on Thursday that they want to move the case trial swiftly in Washington's federal court. Special Counsel Smith's team said that the government's case should take no longer than four to six weeks. “A January 2 trial date would vindicate the public’s strong interest in a speedy trial — an interest guaranteed by the Constitution and federal law in all cases, but of particular significance here, where the defendant, a former president, is charged with conspiring to overturn the legitimate results of the 2020 presidential election, obstruct the certification of the election results, and discount citizens’ legitimate votes,” prosecutors said in the court papers. The Associated Press report said that if US District Judge Tanya Chutkan agreed with the prosecutors' appeal, the case against Trump, a front-runner for the 2024 election, would open right before the third anniversary of the January 6 Capitol Hill riot. Also, the proposed date (from the prosecutors) is just two weeks before the first votes are set to be cast in the Republican presidential race. Trump reacts to proposed trial date: 'Only an out-of-touch lunatic...' Reacting angrily to the proposed trial date, Donald Trump posted on Truth Social, "Only an out-of-touch lunatic would ask for such a date, ONE DAY into the New Year, and maximum Election Interference with IOWA!" × Trump's lawyers have not yet submitted their proposed trial date, and the judge is expected to set the date during a court hearing on August 28. The 2020 election case alleges that Trump illegally conspired to overturn his poll loss to President Joe Biden. Last Tuesday (August 1), Trump was indicted for his attempts to overturn the election. He has been charged with conspiring to defraud the US by preventing Congress from certifying Democrat Joe Biden's victory and depriving voters of their right to a fair election. Days later, the former president sought the recusal of the judge in the case. Special counsel got search warrant for Trump's Twitter account in Capitol riot probe A US appeals court opinion on Wednesday stated that Special Counsel Smith obtained a search warrant for Trump's Twitter account in the Capitol riot investigation. The search warrant was obtained in January this year and Twitter, delayed complying. The US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit affirmed the federal judge's decision to hold Twitter in contempt and fine it $350,000. Trump lashed out at the Department of Justice (DOJ) by saying that it secretly attacked his Twitter account. China will allow provincial-level governments to raise about $139 billion (around 1 trillion yuan) to repay the debt of local-government financing vehicles and other off-balance sheet issuers.

China will allow provincial-level governments to raise about $139 billion (around 1 trillion yuan) to repay the debt of local-government financing vehicles and other off-balance sheet issuers. Citing anonymous sources, a report by the news agency Bloomberg on Friday (August 11) said that the Chinese finance ministry informed relevant authorities about the refinancing bonds programme. The quota has been set for each region, one of the sources told Bloomberg and refused to elaborate. The finance ministry has not commented on this development yet. Provincial govts to use bonds to repay 'hidden debt' Another source told Bloomberg that all provincial governments but Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong and Tibet will be able to use the bonds to repay off-balance sheet liabilities which are also known as hidden debt in China. The authorities identified 12 provinces and cities as high-risk areas where more support will be provided including the provinces of Guizhou, Hunan, Jilin and Tiajin city. The report added that the programme will in effect bail out weaker issuers, including local-government financing vehicles (LGFVs), shifting the debt burden to provincial governments instead. The programme comes weeks after the ruling Communist Party’s Politburo had said it would use a package of measures to resolve local government debt. The amount covered under the debt swap programme is a drop in the bucket compared to the 66 trillion yuan the International Monetary Fund (IMF) estimates local government financing vehicles will hold by the end of this year. The report pointed out that the programme might help defuse the risks of default faced in the regions where it is implemented. It can also bring down the financing costs on hidden debts, give local governments more time to repay, and improve funding conditions in those places. It is not yet clear how provinces will distribute the quote between different LGFVs under jurisdiction as some LGFVs are owned at the provincial level while owned by city governments or the central government. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the Lok Sabha on Thursday (August 10) in response to the opposition's no-confidence motion against the central government.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the Lok Sabha on Thursday (August 10) in response to the opposition's no-confidence motion against the central government. The opposition moved the no-confidence motion against the government on July 26, which Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla admitted. This is the second time that Prime Minister Modi is facing a no-confidence motion. On Tuesday, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi initiated the debate on the motion which later turned into a heated argument between the opposition and the government. Any Lok Sabha MP, who has the support of 50 colleagues, can at any point in time introduce the motion against the Council of Ministers. Following this, a discussion on the motion takes place. Lawmakers who support the motion highlight the government's shortcomings, and the treasury benches respond to the issues they raise. Ultimately, voting takes place, and the government is forced to vacate the office if the motion is successful. Oppn reacts to PM's reply in Lok Sabha: 'It took him 14 days to...' Opposition leaders reacted to the news of the PM's response in the Lok Sabha on Thursday. Speaking to the news agency ANI, Congress MP Manickam Tagore said, "From 20th July opposition INDIA alliance has been demanding that the PM must come to Parliament, speak about Manipur and give a statement of peace and solidarity with the people there. It has taken 14 days for the PM to come to Parliament...No we hope that he answers the question raised by the mover Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi..." Revolutionary Socialist Party MP NK Premachandran, meanwhile, told ANI he does not expect much from PM Modi as yesterday's reply by Union Home Minister Amit Shah made it clear that the government was not answering specific queries raised by the opposition. "The Union government failed miserably in handling the Manipur violence...As the core issue is being ignored by the Union Home Minister in yesterday's reply we are anticipating such type of reply from the Prime Minister also..." Premchandran added. No-confidence motion brought only to create delusion: Shah On Wednesday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the no-confidence motion was moved against the government only to create a delusion despite having a majority in the House and termed it "politically motivated". "This no-confidence motion will show the real character of the Opposition in the country," Shah added. A woman in Australia was fired from the company she had been working with for 18 years after her employers used keystroke technology to find out that she was not typing enough while working from home (WFH).

A woman in Australia was fired from the company she had been working with for 18 years after her employers used keystroke technology to find out that she was not typing enough while working from home (WFH). According to a report by 7News on Wednesday (August 9), the Fair Work Commission (FWC) rejected an unfair dismissal application by Suzie Cheikho, stating she was fired from Insurance Australia Group (IAG) for a valid reason of misconduct. The FWC's findings said that Cheikho was responsible for creating insurance documents, meeting regulatory timelines and monitoring WFH compliance among other roles. The findings added that she was fired from IAG on February 20 for missing deadlines and meetings, being absent and unaccountable, and failing to lodge a product disclosure statement which led to the industry regulator fining IAG. Woman claims she was targeted A month later, Cheikho claimed to the commission that her company had a "premeditated plan to remove her from the business and that she was targeted due to her mental health issues." However, the findings showed that the woman's dismissal did not come without warning. The 7News report said that Cheikho received a formal warning in November last year about her output, and she was put on a performance improvement plan. A detailed review of cyber activity carried out Cheikho was the subject of a detailed review of her cyber activity. The review took a look at how many times she pressed buttons on her keyboard on 49 working days from October to December last year. The review found out that she started late on 47 days, did not work her rostered hours for 44 days, finished early on 29 days and performed zero hours of work on four days. It also found on the days she did log on she had “very low keystroke activity” and recorded zero strokes over 117 hours in October, 143 hours in November, and 60 hours in December. According to FWC President Thomas Roberts, the evidence showed the woman was not working as she was required to do during her designated working hours while being monitored. Woman fired after her company uses tech to monitor her WFH performance: Report

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has come up with evidence that some people, including Indians, who came to Canada on student visas were not attending universities or colleges, and were involved in criminal activity and gangs. On July 21, The CBSA told the publication The Globe and Mail that an investigation into 300 students who gained study permits with fake acceptance letters from universities and colleges identified 10 people involved in criminal activity.

The agency's investigation into the abuse of student visas dates back to a 2018 probe into organised crime. The 2018 probe led to the discovery that student visas were being used by people to come to Canada to join gangs.

Speaking to the publication, CBSA spokesperson Guillaume Bérubé said that the agency would continue to focus inland investigative resources on high-risk cases, with criminality and national security being the highest priorities.

In July, CBSA's Intelligence and Enforcement Branch's vice president Aaron McCrorie sent a letter to a group named Victimised Students of Fraud, the Hindustan Times reported on Wednesday (August 9).

The letter stated that in 2018, the agency was probing organised crime groups and became aware of issues with students not attending schools and getting involved in criminal activity.

This led to new lines of enquiry which led the CBSA to identify more than 2,000 cases where fraudulent documents may have been used to obtain a student visa, the letter said. "In collaboration with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), we reviewed those cases and we narrowed them down to approximately 300 cases of concern," it added.

Agency spokesperson Bérubé told The Globe and Mail that uncovering links to crime was a priority for the agency. The CBSA's Pacific Region team recently probed Brijesh Mishra, an Indian education agent who allegedly played a role in the scam involving fake Canadian college admission letters. He was arrested last month.
