Former Pakistan prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan was arrested on Saturday (August 5) after he was sentenced to three years in prison in the Toshakhana case.

Former Pakistan prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan was arrested on Saturday (August 5) after he was sentenced to three years in prison in the Toshakhana case. On Saturday, a district and sessions court convicted Khan and announced the prison sentence. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 100,000 on the PTI chief. The verdict by Additional District and Sessions Judge Humayun Dilawar came amid Khan's contentions on both the maintainability of the case and repeated transfer requests based on the perceived bias of the judge. Click here to follow all LIVE updates on Imran Khan's arrest Earlier, Justice Dilawar had sought arguments on maintainability and warned the PTI chief's legal team to "present final arguments otherwise the decision would be announced today (Saturday)". Issuing the verdict, the trial court declared Khan of corrupt practices and of making a false declaration before the Election Commission of Pakistan. The court also instructed the Islamabad inspector-general of police (IGP) to ensure the immediate implementation of arrest warrants. Khan was shifted to the Kotlalkpat Jail in Lahore. His legal team has now reached the Supreme Court to challenge his arrest and also challenge the verdict in the case. What is the case? The Toshakhana case accuses Khan of buying gifts, including an expensive Graff wristwatch, he received as the prime minister, at a discounted price from the state depository called Toshakhana and selling them for profit. The district and sessions court's verdict comes a day after Khan's trial over charges that he illegally sold Toshakhana gifts was temporarily halted by the Islamabad High Court. The halt came after the high court asked a trial court to look into whether a legal complaint filed by the country's election commission, as part of an inquiry against Khan, constituted a criminal proceeding. Khan's legal team had challenged the commission's complaint, arguing that it was not a criminal case and that the judge conducting the trial was biased against the former prime minister. The high court, however, had turned down Khan's appeal to remove the trial court judge from hearing the case. PTI blasts verdict PTI slammed Saturday's verdict and said the trial was conducted most absurdly in Paksitan's history. "...an attempt was made to kill justice at the hands of a biased and morally corrupt judge. The trial judge with blindfolds of bias blindfolded the facts of the case with a specific agenda. Sessions Court's decision is the worst example of political revenge and engineering," PTI said in a statement posted on X, earlier called Twitter. "A shameful invasion of the Republic and democracy was made through a flawed, ridiculous and without solid legal basis decision. Humayun Dilawar's decision is a desperate attempt to achieve the shameful goals of a level playing field under the London Plan," it added. Food prices are soaring in Niger after the military takeover triggered trade sanctions from West African neighbours. According to a report by the news agency Reuters early Sunday (August 5), a customer in the capital city of Niamey said that price of a sack of rice had gone up by more than a third to around 15,000 CFA francs ($25). "Frankly, I've felt it in my pocket. And right now ... we're all stocking up," the customer added. In the Yantala market, cooking oil, too, was up to 33,000 CFA (around $55) a can from 22,000 a few days before. Speaking to Reuters, Boubar Salou, a merchant, said he supported the junta's rallying call, adding, "We mustn't create panic now. Because this affects us all ... It's up to us to show that we are Nigeriens and that we must help those around us, and above all help the new government." The coup, which was imposed over a week back, has prompted the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) economic and political bloc to close borders and sever commercial ties with Niger. The closure of borders worsens the food shortage crisis in the country. Human rights groups urge ECOWAS to reconsider its measures The Paris-based International Federation for Human Rights and Nigerien Association for Defence of Human Rights urged ECOWAS to reconsider its measures to avoid worsening civilian hardships. "We are deeply concerned about the consequences of these sanctions, especially their impacts on the supply of essential food products, pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, petroleum products, and electricity," Sita Adamou, the head of the Niger group, said. Adamou added that the ECOWAS' measures have already begun to affect the Nigerien population, who are regularly facing food and health difficulties. US pauses certain foreign assistance programmes for Niger On Friday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that Washington would pause certain foreign assistance programmes for Niger, but would continue giving humanitarian and food assistance. "As we have made clear since the outset of this situation, the provision of U.S. assistance to the government of Niger depends on democratic governance and respect for constitutional order," Blinken said in a statement. "We remain committed to supporting the people of Niger to help them preserve their hard-earned democracy and we reiterate our call for the immediate restoration of Niger's democratically elected government," he added. Six former police officers in Mississippi pleaded guilty to torturing and abusing two Black men and a white man in two separate incidents. In a statement on Thursday (August 3), the US Justice Department said these former police officers were charged with a total of 16 felonies stemming from the torture and physical abuse of the three men, who were residents of Rankin County. "Those 16 felonies include civil rights conspiracy, deprivation of rights under colour of law, discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence, conspiracy to obstruct justice and obstruction of justice," the statement said. "...six defendants, five former members of the Rankin County, Mississippi, Sheriff’s Office (RSCO) – Chief Investigator Brett McAlpin, 52, Narcotics Investigator Christian Dedmon, 28, Lieutenant Jeffrey Middleton, 46, Deputy Hunter Elward, 31, Deputy Daniel Opdyke, 27 – and one former member of the Richland, Mississippi, Police Department – Narcotics Investigator Joshua Hartfield, 31 – pleaded guilty to all charges against them," the statement added. The victims The two Black men were identified as MJ and EP and the white man has not been identified yet. The former police officers admitted that on January 24, without a warrant or any exigent circumstances, they kicked in the door and entered a home in Braxton, Rankin County, Mississippi where MJ and EP were residing. "The defendants handcuffed and arrested the men without probable cause to believe they had committed any crime, called them racial slurs, and warned them to stay out of Rankin County. Further, the defendants punched and kicked the men, tased them 17 times, forced them to ingest liquids, and assaulted them with a dildo. During the incident, Dedmon fired his gun twice to intimidate the men," the statement said. After this incident, Elward surreptitiously removed a bullet from the chamber of his gun, forced the gun into MJ’s mouth and pulled the trigger. The unloaded gun clicked but did not fire. The officer racked the slide, intending to dry-fire a second time. When Elward pulled the trigger, the gun discharged. The bullet lacerated MJ’s tongue, broke his jaw, and exited out of his neck. As the MJ was bleeding on the floor, the defendants did not provide medical aid but instead gathered outside the home to devise a false cover story and took steps to corroborate it including charging the man with crimes he did not commit, submitting fraudulent drug evidence to the crime lab and making false statements to investigators. The statement also said that Dedmon, Elward, and Opdyke each also pleaded guilty to a criminal information, leading to charges of three additional federal felony offences, including deprivation of rights under colour of law and discharge of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence. These charges arose from an incident on December 4, 2022, in which Dedmon beat and tased a white man and fired a gun near his head to coerce a confession, while Elward and Opdyke failed to intervene. A police personnel was killed, and an armoury was looted in two separate incidents in violence-hit Manipur on Thursday (August 3), Indian media reports said. Citing an official statement, NDTV reported that armed attackers and security forces exchanged fire Koutruk, Haraothel, and Senjam Chirang areas. In Senjam Chirang, the police personnel was killed after being shot in the head by a sniper. A village volunteer was also injured in the gun battle.

Meanwhile, in Manipur's Bishnupur district, a mob looted weapons from the Second Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) at Naransena. The mob also tried to seize arms and ammunition from Heingang and Singjamei police stations but security forces thwarted their attack, the report added.

Manipur has been rocked by ethnic violence since May. Over 130 people have been killed and 60,000 others displaced. The violence started after a court ordered the state government to consider extending special economic benefits and quotas in government jobs and education enjoyed by the tribal Kuki people to the majority Meitei population as well.

What started with street protests spiralled into an armed conflict. The Narendra Modi-led central government is facing backlash from the opposition parties. The monsoon session of parliament has been disrupted several times, to demand a detailed statement by Prime Minister Modi on Manipur in parliament, followed by a debate.

On July 26, the parliament authorised a no-confidence vote against the central government by opposition parties to force Modi to address in detail concerns about the violence in the northeastern state.

Approving the opposition motion, Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla said he would soon decide when the debate and vote would take place.

Manipur violence: Cop killed, armoury looted in separate incidents in Indian state

Russian opposition leader and Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny's prison sentence has been extended to 19 years on Friday (August 4) in a criminal case that he said was trumped up to keep him behind bars and out of politics for even longer, a report by the news agency Reuters said.

Russian opposition leader and Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny's prison sentence has been extended to 19 years on Friday (August 4) in a criminal case that he said was trumped up to keep him behind bars and out of politics for even longer, a report by the news agency Reuters said. Navalny, 47, is already serving sentences totalling 11.5 years on fraud and other charges that he says are also bogus. On July 20, Russian prosecutors sought a jail sentence of 20 years for Navalny, following which the European Union added the chief of the Russian prison camp holding the Kremlin critic to its sanctions list. As the arch-rival of President Vladimir Putin awaits his fate, here’s a look at who he is and how he got to this point. Who is Alexei Navalny? A lawyer by profession, Alexei Navalny gained prominence after he started writing blogs that exposed what he said was vast corruption in Russia. Navalny has said that the country is ruled by crooks and thieves. Navalny and his team have lampooned President Putin and produced slick videos to expose the opulent lifestyles of the country’s elite. He has forecast that Russia could face seismic political turmoil, including a revolution because he says President Putin has built a system of personal rule that is reliant on sycophancy and corruption. In the 2000s, Navalny participated in Russian nationalist marches and voiced anti-immigrant views. When protests against Putin flared in late 2011, Navalny was one of the first protesters to be arrested. Two years later, he ran for mayor of Moscow and won 27 per cent of the vote. However, since then, he has been barred on various grounds from running for office. In an interview with Reuters in 2011, Navalny said that corruption was the foundation of contemporary Russia, adding, “It is the foundation of Mr. Putin’s political power.” The dismissal and accusation The Kremlin has dismissed Navalny's claims about corruption and Putin’s wealth. At one point, the Kremlin accused him of working with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to undermine Russia. It also portrayed Navalny as an agent of disruption and says he never represented serious political competition. At present, Navalny’s movement is outlawed and most of his senior allies have fled Russia. Navalny has been detained multiple times for organising public rallies, and prosecuted repeatedly on charges including corruption, embezzlement, and fraud. He denies the accusations and convictions by saying they are politically motivated. The poisonings In August 2020, Navalny fell ill on a flight from Siberia to Moscow. An emergency landing was made and Navalny was flown to Berlin where he was treated for the effects of a neurotoxin. Lab tests in three countries showed this neurotoxin to be Novichok, a poison developed in the Soviet Union. According to Reuters, a joint media investigation stated it identified a team of assassins from Russia’s FSB security service behind the poisoning. Impersonating himself as a Russian official, Navalny made a phone call to one of the agents and the latter revealed the details of the plot, which included that the poison was smeared on Navalny’s underpants. Dismissing the investigation, Putin said, “If someone had wanted to poison him, they would have finished him off.” Extension of Navalny's prison sentence Navalny has been sentenced to an additional 19 years in prison after being found guilty on a series of new charges, on Friday (August 4), a sentence close to what he predicted. This is after the Russian prosecutors have sought another 20 years of prison sentence on six separate criminal charges, including inciting and financing extremist activity and creating an extremist organisation, Reuters reported. In a message posted on social media on Thursday, Navalny said the outcome (of the prison sentence) could be slightly less, at around 18 years. “It’s going to be a long sentence. What is called ‘Stalinist’,” said Navalny, who can post on social media via his supporters and lawyers. Last month, the Kremlin critic said that he would keep opposing Russian authorities. “For a new, free, rich country to be born, it must have parents. Those who want it. Who expects it and who are willing to make sacrifices for its birth,” he said, according to a text supplied by his aides. On the Ukraine war Alexei Navalny has also criticised the ongoing war in Ukraine by saying it was a “stupid war” which Putin started, adding the conflict was built on lies. “One madman has got his claws into Ukraine and I do not know what he wants to do with it - this crazy thief,” Navalny said in a court hearing in 2022. On June 19 this year, Navalny announced the start of a new mass campaign against Putin and the Ukraine war. “We will conduct an election campaign against war. And against Putin. Just that. A long, stubborn, exhausting but fundamentally important campaign where we will turn people against the war,” he said. Black politicians Justin Pearson and Justin Jones, who became Democratic party heroes as members of the “Tennessee Three,” reclaimed their legislative seats on Thursday (August 3) after they were expelled for involvement in a gun control protest on the House floor.

Black politicians Justin Pearson and Justin Jones, who became Democratic party heroes as members of the “Tennessee Three,” reclaimed their legislative seats on Thursday (August 3) after they were expelled for involvement in a gun control protest on the House floor. Pearson and Jones were reinstated by local officials after they were booted from the Statehouse, Associated Press reported. They advanced through a special election to fully reclaim their positions. Both faced opponents in districts that heavily favour Democrats and easily defeated them. Jones faced Republican candidate Laura Nelson. Pearson, meanwhile, faced independent candidate Jeff Johnston. 'Victory after victory after victory' Speaking to supporters, Pearson said, "I think if we keep running this race, there will be victory after victory after victory.” The Democrat stressed his victory was largely possible due to Black women and the organising work they had done to make him and other politicians successful. Jones and Pearson were elected to the Statehouse in 2022. And Thursday's special election came as lawmakers are preparing to return to Nashville later in August for a special session to address possibly changing the state’s gun control laws. While the re-election of Jones and Pearson would not make a significant dent in the Republican supermajority inside the legislature, they are expected to push back heavily against some of their GOP colleagues’ policies, the Associated Press report said. The earlier expulsion: What happened? During this spring, the two lawmakers joined Democrat Gloria Johnson in a protest for more gun control on the House floor. The protest happened days after a shooting at a private school in Nashville killed three children and three adults. As thousands of protesters flooded the Capitol building to demand that the Republican supermajority enact some sort of restrictions on firearms, Johnson, Jones, and Pearson approached the front of the House chamber with a bullhorn and joined the protesters’ chants and cries for action. Republican lawmakers quickly declared that their actions violated House rules and moved to expel their three colleagues. Johnson, who is white, avoided expulsion while Pearson and Jones were booted from the Statehouse. The expulsions drew national support for the newly dubbed “Tennessee Three,”, especially for Pearson and Jones’ campaign fundraising. House Republican leaders have repeatedly denied that race was a factor in the expulsions. However, Democrats have disagreed, with Johnson countering that the only reason that she wasn’t expelled was due to her being white. A husband and wife cyber crime team in the United States on Thursday (August 3) pleaded guilty to trying to launder $4.5 billion of Bitcoin that they stole in a hack in 2016.

A husband and wife cyber crime team in the United States on Thursday (August 3) pleaded guilty to trying to launder $4.5 billion of Bitcoin that they stole in a hack in 2016. In a hearing before US District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly in Washington, Ilya Lichtenstein, 37, admitted to hacking the Bitfinex exchange and enlisting his wife Heather Morgan, 33, to help conceal some 119,754 stolen Bitcoins, the news agency Reuters reported. The tokens were worth $71 million at the time of the hack but had appreciated to more than $4.5 billion at the time of their February 22 arrests in New York. According to Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco, the $3.6 billion in assets recovered was the biggest financial seizure in US Department of Justice history. Since then, the Department of Justice recovered $475 million more, and the couple in court on Thursday agreed to jointly forfeit $72 million. Who is the couple? Ilya Lichtenstein has studied psychology and describes himself in his LinkedIn profile as a technology entrepreneur. Heather Morgan, on the other hand, masqueraded as a rapper and tech entrepreneur. She went by the artist name "Razzlekhan." On Thursday, prosecutor Christopher Brown said Lichtenstein had a long history of hacking, including as a juvenile, and had stolen funds from virtual currency exchanges before 2016. After Lichtenstein hacked the exchange, Brown said that Morgan helped her husband set up accounts with fictitious identities to help hide proceeds. "It was at my direction," Lichtenstein told the judge and acknowledged converting some funds to gold coins, which he gave to Morgan, who buried them in California. Law enforcement has since dug them up, a prosecutor said. The suspicion In a separate plea hearing, Morgan said Lichtenstein first told her that he hacked the Bitfinex exchange in 2020. However, the 33-year-old had long been suspicious that her husband's money came from an illicit source such as drugs or tax evasion. Morgan said that she and Lichtenstein took several trips to Ukraine and Kazakhstan, which she thought were for tourism and generating business for a company they ran. However, she said that alarm bells went off when she saw Lichtenstein burning documents in a trash can during a Kazakhstan visit. When confronted, he was evasive, Morgan said in the plea hearing. As per prosecutors, Lichtenstein used the trips to meet with "money mules" who converted cryptocurrency into government-issued currency and deposited it into Russian and Ukrainian banks. Lichtenstein and Morgan would then withdraw cash from the accounts in the US. The sentencing dates have not been set yet, and both defendants have agreed to cooperate with the U.S. Attorney's office in Washington as part of a late July plea deal. Pentagon spokesperson Brigadier General Patrick Ryder said North Korea only acknowledged the UN Command's request for information about King and stopped short of offering detailed information about him, Reuters reported. "I can confirm that the DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) has responded to United Nations Command, but I don't have any substantial progress to read out," General Ryder told reporters, adding Pyongyang's message back to the UN Command was just "an acknowledgement" of the Command's inquiry. King, a private in the US Army, sprinted into North Korea on July 18 and was taken into custody, landing the US in a new diplomatic quandary with Pyongyang. Concerns over King's fate in North Korea King joined the army in 2021 and served as a Cavalry Scout with the Korean Rotational Force, part of the decades-old US security commitment to South Korea. However, his posting was dogged by legal troubles. He faced allegations of assault in South Korea and served a hard labour sentence at the Cheonan correctional facility from May 24 to July 10. After being released, King stayed at a US base in South Korea for a week before sprinting into North Korea. Now, American officials have expressed concerns over King's fate in North Korea. His crossing into the isolated country has led analysts to point out that tourists should expect far strict supervision if visits to the border between North and South Korea resume. Going to the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) separating the two Koreas is a popular trip for tourists looking to get a glimpse of the reclusive authoritarian state. For tour agencies, the Joint Security Area (JSA) inside the DMZ is one of the packages that sell with the highest margin in South Korea. Speaking to Reuters, Lim Eul-chul, a professor of North Korean studies at Kyungnam University, said authorities should focus on how to better control tour groups while keeping the area open to the public.
