The United Nations (UN) on Thursday (September 7) called for strict rules on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT in classrooms, including limiting their use to older children.

The United Nations (UN) on Thursday (September 7) called for strict rules on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT in classrooms, including limiting their use to older children. UNESCO warned in a guidance that public authorities were not ready to deal with the ethical issues of rolling out generative AI (GenAI) programmes in schools. UNESCO said that relying on such programmes rather than human teachers could affect a child's emotional well-being and leave them vulnerable to manipulation. The UN education body's Director General Audrey Azoulay said that GenAI could be a tremendous opportunity for human development, but it could also cause harm and prejudice. "It cannot be integrated into education without public engagement, and the necessary safeguards and regulations from governments," Azoulay added. 'Schools embracing radically unfamiliar technology' Speaking to the news agency Reuters on Thursday, UNESCO's Assistant Director-General for Education Stefania Giannini said that people were struggling to align the speed of transformation of the education system to the speed of the change in technological progress and advancement in these machine learning methods. "In many cases, governments and schools are embracing a radically unfamiliar technology that even leading technologists do not claim to understand," Giannini added. GenAI programmes, which became prominent late last year, have sparked fears of plagiarism and cheating in schools and universities. UNESCO said on Thursday that providers of such programmes should be held responsible "for ensuring adherence to core values and lawful purposes, respecting intellectual property, and upholding ethical practices, while also preventing the spread of disinformation and hate speech." The UN education body also called for the prevention of GenAI where it would deprive learners of opportunities to develop cognitive abilities and social skills through observations of the real world. UNESCO's guidance stopped short of recommending a minimum age for school students but pointed out that ChatGPT had a lower age limit of 13. "Many commentators understand this threshold to be too young and have advocated for legislation to raise the age to 16," it added. The Australian government said on Thursday (September 7) that a strip search of female passengers at Qatar's Hamad International Airport played a part in its decision this year to stop Qatar Airways from selling more flights to Australia.

The Australian government said on Thursday (September 7) that a strip search of female passengers at Qatar's Hamad International Airport played a part in its decision this year to stop Qatar Airways from selling more flights to Australia. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, the Australian government denied it was acting due to pressure from Qantas Airways. Addressing a press conference in Canberra, Australian Transport Minister Catherine King said that the invasive body searches of female passengers, which included five Australian women, at the airport in 2020 were the context for the decision to deny the airline more flights to Australia in July this year. Minister mentions another incident as reason for blocking flights King said, "It wasn't the only factor. It was a factor." She referred to another incident, where women were taken off a Qatar Airways plane and forced to undergo medical examination after the discovery of an abandoned baby at the airport. The Qatar government later apologised. The minister also said it was nonsense to suggest that adding more Qatar Airways flights would have put downward pressure on international fares. Women's experiences were...: Australian minister Transport Minister King further told reporters that the women's experiences were pretty frankly, not anything the government would expect anyone, and certainly not Australians travelling on an international airline, to experience. According to an Al-Jazeera report on Thursday, the five Australian women were suing Qatar Airways and the state-run Qatar Civil Aviation Authority over the 2020 incident. In June, their lawyers sent King a letter which described Qatar Airways as “not fit to carry passengers around the globe let alone to major Australian airports.” In July, King formally rejected the airline's bid to add flights to Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, and said the proposal was not in Australia’s national interests. Al-Jazeera reported that the Australian government has been under fire for blocking Qatar Airways’ proposal. Critics, meanwhile, have accused the government of Qantas’s profits at the expense of consumers. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Auto safety regulators in the United States said on Tuesday (September 5) that 52 million airbag inflators produced by ARC Automotive and Delphi Automotive should be recalled as they might rupture and send dangerous metal fragments flying.

Auto safety regulators in the United States said on Tuesday (September 5) that 52 million airbag inflators produced by ARC Automotive and Delphi Automotive should be recalled as they might rupture and send dangerous metal fragments flying. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said airbag inflators that rupture when commanded to deploy were defective as they both failed to protect vehicle occupants as they should and, pose an unreasonable risk of serious injury or death on their own. The NHTSA first demanded a voluntary recall in May, but ARC rejected it. The agency issued an initial decision on Tuesday and set a public meeting on October 5 in a rare move to compel a recall. In which vehicles have the airbag inflators been used? As per the Reuters report, the inflators that the NHTSA is seeking to recall have been used in vehicles from the year 2000 till early 2018 produced by 12 automakers including General Motors, Ford, Tesla, Toyota, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Volkswagen. Initially, the NHTSA said that 67 million airbag inflators were unsafe. But on Tuesday, it adjusted this estimate to account for "over-inclusive responses reported to the agency by certain manufacturers over the course of the investigation." If the recall is successful, the callback would be one of the largest on record, Reuters reported. In May, the ARC rejected the NHTSA's conclusion that there was a defect. The agency, meanwhile, said that ARC in January 2018 completed the installation of devices on inflator manufacturing lines used to detect excesses of a hardened byproduct of welding known as weld slag, or other debris. The NHTSA added that it was unaware of issues in ARC inflators produced since the installation of the devices. NHTSA said it "believes that the evidence does identify a likely cause" and added that ARC's argument on not finding a root cause "is not a reason for delaying a recall." The agency pointed out that it was aware of seven confirmed inflator ruptures in the United States in the vehicles it seeks to have recalled, including seven injuries and one death. G20 member states have agreed to grant permanent membership to the African Union (AU), the news agency Bloomberg reported on Thursday (September 7) citing sources privy to the developments. This move would give the AU the same status as the European Union (EU) from its current designation of "invited international organisation." In June, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote to the G20 member states proposing the African Union be given full, permanent membership of the bloc at the upcoming summit in India's capital city New Delhi. The G20 leaders are expected to announce the decision during the summit, the Bloomberg report said. This time, the G20 summit in New Delhi also invited nine non-member states, including Bangladesh, Singapore, Spain and Nigeria, besides international organisations such as the United Nations (UN), World Health Organization (WHO), the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Also read | India will hope to keep climate change the prime agenda of G20 Summit: Experts The Bloomberg report said that countries like Germany, Brazil, and Canada also expressed their support for AU's membership to the G20. G20 final preparations done; summit begins on Saturday On Wednesday, New Delhi made final preparations ahead of the G20 summit with the national capital's residents saying the weekend summit and the opportunity it brings on the global stage would be a proud moment for Indian citizens. New Delhi has undergone a makeover ahead of the summit set to be held at the sprawling, refurbished Pragati Maidan. Prime Minister Modi has sought to wield leadership of the G20 grouping of the world's most powerful economies to promote India as a destination for trade and investment, particularly as China's economy has slowed down. During the summit which begins on Saturday, the Indian government said that it would push for a resolution on climate change, multilateral bank reforms and technological transformation. Russian General Sergei Surovikin was seen in public for the first time since a brief mutiny by the Wagner mercenary group in June, the news agency Reuters reported on Tuesday (September 5), citing a well-known Russian media personality. Sharing a photograph that appeared to show General Surovikin, Ksenia Sobchak said on Monday, "General Sergei Surovikin is out. Alive, healthy, at home, with his family, in Moscow. Photo taken today." The photograph showed a man in sunglasses and a cap walking alongside a woman resembling Surovikin's wife, Anna. However, the photograph's authenticity could not be verified. A man admired by the late Wagner chief Prigozhin Surovikin, who was nicknamed "General Armageddon" during Russia's military intervention in Syria's civil war, was briefly put in charge of Russia's offensive in Ukraine before that role was handed over to General Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the General Staff. Surovikin has been widely viewed by Russian war commentators as a forceful and capable figure. Late Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin was fiercely critical of Russia's defence establishment but spoke highly of Surovikin. A view shows a couple appearing to be Russian General Sergei Surovikin and his wife Anna in this undated photo (Image source: Ostorozhno Media via Reuters) Following the aborted mutiny by Wagner, Surovikin had fallen out of favour with the Kremlin. According to reports, he was being investigated for possible complicity. Last month, Surovikin was removed as the air force chief over the mutiny, and his deputy Viktor Afzalov had assumed the job temporarily. Speaking to Reuters, US officials said that Surovikin had been supportive of Prigozhin, but that Western intelligence did not know with certainty whether he had helped the rebellion in any way. Hong Kong's top court on Tuesday (September 5) ruled in favour of same-sex partnerships, including civil unions. However, the court stopped short of granting full marriage rights.

Hong Kong's top court on Tuesday (September 5) ruled in favour of same-sex partnerships, including civil unions. However, the court stopped short of granting full marriage rights. According to a report by the news agency AFP, this is the first time the Court of Final Appeal directly addressed the issue of same-sex marriage. The case was brought by Jimmy Sham, a pro-democracy activist who is in jail. In its ruling on Tuesday, the Court of Final Appeal said the Hong Kong government was in "violation of its positive obligation... to establish an alternative framework for legal recognition of same-sex partnerships", such as civil unions. The court unanimously dismissed the appeal in relation to same-sex marriage and recognition of foreign same-sex marriage, the judgement further said. A partial win for LGBTQ community Tuesday's ruling is seen as a partial win for Hong Kong's LGBTQ community which in recent years has won piecemeal victories in court, striking down discriminatory government policies on visas, taxes, and housing benefits. AFP reported that while LGBTQ activism faces political challenges in mainland China, Hong Kong has seen increasing support among its population for same-sex marriage. A poll carried out this year found that 60 per cent of Hong Kongers supported same-sex marriage, compared to just 38 per cent a decade back. The challenge launched by jailed pro-democracy activist Sham twice failed to convince the courts that Hong Kong should legally recognise his marriage to a same-sex partner. This marriage was registered in New York nearly a decade ago. In August last year, appeal judges wrote that Hong Kong's constitutional text "only provides access to the institution of marriage to heterosexual couples". Sham had argued the city's ban on same-sex marriage violated his right to equality. His lawyer Karon Monaghan told the court in June this year that the ban disadvantages same-sex couples in areas such as inheritance and housing rentals. How is Sham's case different? Speaking to AFP, gender studies scholar Suen Yiu-tung said that Hong Kong decriminalised Gender studies scholar Suen Yiu-tung but it still had no protection against discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity. Suen highlighted local courts have struck down discriminatory policies "domain-by-domain" but that approach resulted in a really long journey. Tuesday's case was different as it asked for more wholesale recognition of same-sex marriage, but this meant success might be more difficult.
