Caribbean countries will formally demand slavery reparations from the British Royal family. According to a report by The Telegraph on Saturday (September 9), national reparations commissions in the Caribbean want to bypass the Rishi Sunak government and pursue financial payments directly from British institutions with historical links to slavery.

The report said that formal letters are being prepared to put the case for reparations to these institutions by the end of this year. Speaking to The Telegraph, Arley Gill, a lawyer and chair of the island nation’s Reparations Commission, said she hoped that King Charles would revisit the issue of reparations and make a more profound statement beginning with an apology.

“He should make some money available. We are not saying that he should starve himself and his family, and we are not asking for trinkets," Gill said, adding a discussion could be held on what could be made available for reparative justice.

The lawyer of the Reparations Commission also pointed out the duty to offer reparations laid “at all levels, banks, churches, insurance companies like Lloyds, and universities and colleges that benefited”.

As per the report, the Royal family played a direct part in founding the slave-trading Royal African Company, from which it earned a return. It said that banks such as Barclays and RBS have had direct links to the slave trade, whether through finance or the slave ownership of their directors.

The report also said that leading figures in the Church of England owned slaves, and the United Society for the Propagation of the Gospel invested in Barbados plantations. The above-mentioned institutions are set to receive formal demands being prepared by the Reparations Commission for St Vincent and the Grenadines.

Adrian Odle, a lawyer and commission chair, told the publication that British institutions are compromised by their ancestral guilt, saying “every property that the royal family is in possession of has the scent of slavery”. Odle will push to bypass the Sunak government which has so far not been receptive to the idea of reparations.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Saturday (September 9) explained to several world leaders, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, the release of treated water from the Fukushima nuclear plant into the sea, during the G20 Summit in India's capital city New Delhi.

Speaking to reporters, Hikariko Ono, press secretary at Japan's foreign ministry, said, "Prime Minister Kishida explained that the data monitored since last month's (water) discharge has been made public in a prompt and highly transparent manner. And that no problem has arisen from a scientific standpoint." Some countries have taken uncommon actions over discharge: Japan Last month, Japan started releasing treated radioactive water from the wrecked Fukushima nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean, and drew some harsh criticism from China which immediately banned all seafood imports from Japan. Also read: Japan PM Kishida, ministers enjoy 'safe, delicious' Sashimi lunch to demonstrate Fukushima seafood safety The Kishida government has said repeatedly that the water release is safe. During Saturday's press conference, Ono, without naming any countries, said, "Unfortunately, some countries have been taking uncommon actions such as suspending all imports of Japanese marine food products in response to the recent (water) discharge into the sea." Referring to Kishida's remarks at the G20 summit, the foreign ministry press secretary said that Tokyo would continue to work closely with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and provide explanations to the international community based on scientific evidence in good faith and a highly transparent manner. China's stance on Fukushima release 'false': US On Thursday, US House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy called China's position on the Fukushima water release false and unfair. "I just view it as another way of the Communist Party of China putting falsities out there, trying to divide," McCarthy told reporters in Tokyo, adding he had no concern whatsoever about eating produce from Fukushima. Earlier, Japanese PM Kishida said he explained Tokyo's position on the matter to Chinese Premier Li Qiang during a brief talk on the sidelines of a regional meeting in Indonesia on Thursday. However, Kishida declined to say how Li had responded. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Share your stories and opinions with us here.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Saturday (September 9) proposed an alliance between Latin American countries to bring a unified voice to the fight against drug trafficking.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Saturday (September 9) proposed an alliance between Latin American countries to bring a unified voice to the fight against drug trafficking. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, President Petro closed the Latin America and Caribbean Conference on Drugs by saying that over five decades of a failed war on drugs resulted in immeasurable bloodshed and pain across Latin America. "It is time to rebuild hope and not repeat the bloody and ferocious wars, the ill-named 'war on drugs', viewing drugs as a military problem and not as a health problem for society," Petro said during the press conference. In a joint statement, the countries participating in the conference said the demand for illicit drugs must be reduced by educating the public and combating inequality, poverty, lack of opportunities, and violence. Anti-drug strategy should be reconsidered: Petro The Colombian president also pushed for the reconsideration of an anti-drug strategy and urged for the need for a unified voice "that defends our society, our future and our history and stops repeating a failed discourse." Colombia, which saw an unprecedented surge in violence years ago from drug trafficking during Pablo Escobar's reign, still faces persistent violence from current drug cartels with growing firepower and economic might. In December last year, the Colombian government agreed on a ceasefire with the country's main drug cartel Gulf Clan as part of President Petro's plan for total peace in the country. However, the ceasefire was suspended in March with Petro accusing the Gulf Clan of "sowing anxiety and terror." The president ordered security forces to reactivate their military operations against the cartel. Mexico urges Latin America to support US' fight against Fentanyl Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who was a part of Saturday's conference, said that Latin American countries needed to support the United States in its fight against Fentanyl. In the fourth round, both fighters had flurries go their way, but Strickland dictated the pace. The final round showcased Strickland’s brilliant offense and simple but perfect boxing put Adesanya on the back foot the whole round. .@SStricklandMMA at a loss for words after becoming the undisputed champ 👏 #UFC293 pic.twitter.com/K52vxmLsL1 — UFC (@ufc) September 10, 2023 × In the post-fight interview, Strickland said he was surprised at the victory. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which is the atomic watchdog of the United Nations (UN), on Friday (September 9) warned of a potential threat to nuclear safety due to a spike in fighting near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in the war-torn Ukraine.

In a statement, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said, "I remain deeply concerned about the possible dangers facing the plant at this time of heightened military tension in the region." “Whatever happens in a conflict zone, wherever it may be, everybody would stand to lose from a nuclear accident, and I urge that all necessary precautions must be taken to avoid it happening,” Grossi said. He added the IAEA team was informed that staff at the nuclear power plant had been reduced temporarily to minimum levels due to concerns about more military activity in the area. 'Numerous explosions reported near Zaporizhzhia for past 1 week' The IAEA said that its experts deployed at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant reported hearing numerous explosions over the past week. There has been no damage to the plant. "Starting last Saturday, the IAEA team heard around two dozen explosions over three days, followed by several more in the last few days. There was no damage to the plant itself," the statement further said. Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine in February last year, the UN atomic watchdog has expressed concerns that the fighting could cause a potential radiation leak from the facility, which is one of the world’s 10 biggest nuclear power stations. The plant's six reactors have been shut for months but it still requires power and qualified staff to operate crucial cooling systems and other safety features. The Zaporizhzhia plant has been occupied by Russian forces since March last year. Last month, Ukraine's atomic energy operator said that it was vital to gain control of the plant to supply electricity to Ukraine. G20 delegates have reached a compromise on language to describe the ongoing war in Ukraine, the news agency Reuters reported on Saturday (September 9) as their leaders began the annual G20 summit in India's capital city New Delhi.

G20 delegates have reached a compromise on language to describe the ongoing war in Ukraine, the news agency Reuters reported on Saturday (September 9) as their leaders began the annual G20 summit in India's capital city New Delhi. A person familiar with the developments told Reuters that the G20 country representatives reached a compromise on the language to be used in the final communique, which will be presented to the leaders. Reuters reported that this language could be similar to the one in the communique issued in Indonesia at last year's G20 summit, which noted that while most nations condemned Russia for the invasion, there were also divergent views. Click here to follow LIVE updates on the first day of the G20 Summit Another source told Reuters a joint declaration may or may not come to a unanimous agreement. A third source in one of the G20 member states told the news agency the paragraph on the war on Ukraine had been agreed by Western countries and sent to Russia for its views. What is Russia's take on language to describe Ukraine war? At the G20 Summit, Russia is being represented by its Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov who said he will block the final declaration unless it reflects Moscow's position on Ukraine and other crises. The source in one of the G20 member states told Reuters that Russia had the option to accept the West's views and give its dissent as part of the statement. If there is no agreement, India will have to issue a chair statement. This would mean that for the first time in 20 years, G20 will not have a declaration. G20 member states are divided over Russia's offensive in Ukraine, with Western countries pushing for strong condemnation of Russia while others are demanding a focus on broader economic issues. Turkish prez spoke with Japanese PM to revive Black Sea grain deal During the first day of the G20 Summit on Saturday, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan held talks with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on reviving the Black Sea grain deal, Reuters reported citing sources. Earlier this week, Turkish President Erdogan said that after talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, it would soon be possible to revive the grain deal. He added that Ukraine should soften its negotiating position against Russia in talks over reviving the deal and export more grain to Africa rather than Europe. G20 Summit: Delegates reach consensus on language referring to war in Ukraine, says report

Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi arrived in Ukraine on Saturday (September 9) to show support for the war-torn country and discuss the reconstruction after the damages caused due to Russia's offensive.

Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi arrived in Ukraine on Saturday (September 9) to show support for the war-torn country and discuss the reconstruction after the damages caused due to Russia's offensive. According to a report by the news agency Associated Press, Foreign Minister Hayashi is accompanied by many business leaders during the visit. Hayashi will meet his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba in Kyiv. The report said that Hayashi is also set to visit Bucha, which is one of the hardest-hit towns on the outskirts of Kyiv. Foreign minister's first visit since start of war: What to expect? This is the Japanese foreign minister's first visit to Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian offensive in February last year. A foreign ministry official, who chose to remain anonymous, told the Associated Press that Hayashi would convey Tokyo's determination to support Ukraine’s economic recovery and reconstruction from the damages of war “from a uniquely Japanese perspective” through cooperation between the public and private sectors. The official added that Hayashi's business delegation to Ukraine includes Japanese business leaders like Rakuten Group CEO Hiroshi Mikitani and All Co. President Teppei Sakano. The delegation aims to assess the situation in Ukraine on the ground and communicate with Kyiv about its reconstruction needs. Japan is also planning to host a conference with Ukraine aimed at economic reconstruction of the latter country at the end of this year or early next year, the report added. Six months back, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida visited Ukraine, the last G7 leader to do so ahead of the summit in May. Since the beginning of the war, Japan has donated over $7 billion to Ukraine, mostly for humanitarian assistance. The military equipment supplied to Ukraine is limited to non-lethal weapons due to the legal limitations under the Japanese pacifist Constitution. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, the court ruled that the White House, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and top health officials may not "coerce or significantly encourage" social media companies to remove content the Biden administration considers misinformation, including about the coronavirus pandemic.

However, the panel of the 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals narrowed much of an injunction issued by a Louisiana judge that restricted the administration from communicating with such companies.

The injunction has been placed on hold for 10 days as the Biden administration could seek the Supreme Court's review. The administration argued that it asked social media companies to take down posts it considered to be harmful misinformation, but never forced them to do so.

As per the report, the lower court judge found out that American officials illegally coerced Meta Platforms' Facebook, Alphabet's YouTube, and X (formerly known as Twitter), into censoring posts related to Covid and allegations of election fraud.

On Friday, the appeals court panel said that while officials had an interest in engaging with social media companies about misinformation, the government was not allowed to advance these interests to the extent that it engages in viewpoint suppression.

The court also said that the narrower injunction applied to the White House, the surgeon general, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the FBI, but would no longer apply to other federal officials covered by the lower court order.

"Social media platforms' content-moderation decisions must be theirs and theirs alone," the court added and barred officials at those agencies from coercing or significantly encouraging social media companies to remove content.

India is hosting the G20 Summit on Saturday (September 9) and Sunday. A controversy emerged in the run-up to the summit when Indian President Droupadi Murmu sent invites for the dinner on the sidelines of the summit by calling herself "President of Bharat." This stirred speculation that the government may be about to change the country's name. This possible change of name triggered a squabble between opposition parties and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). On Saturday, Prime Minister Modi began addressing the G20 member states in New Delhi. The desk where he was sitting had the nameplate Bharat instead of India. Here's a look at the image: Now by convention, invitations issued by Indian constitutional bodies have always mentioned the name India when the text is in English, and the name Bharat when the text is in Hindi. However, the invites -- in English -- for the G20 dinner called Murmu the President of Bharat. #WATCH | G 20 in India | Prime Minister Narendra Modi says, "India's G20 presidency has become a symbol of inclusion, of 'sabka saath' both inside and outside the country. A few days back, Prime Minister Modi advised his ministers to refrain from commenting on the "Bharat vs. India" row. Opposition parties have meanwhile accused the government of deflecting the focus of citizens from real issues. Changing India's name to only Bharat would require an amendment to the Constitution which would need to be passed by a two-thirds majority in both houses of parliament- the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.
