At least 66 people are still reported to missing in the deadly Maui wildfires from last month, as rescue teams continued to remove toxic debris from the burn sites.

At least 66 people are still reported to missing in the deadly Maui wildfires from last month, as rescue teams continued to remove toxic debris from the burn sites. The official death toll stands at 115, according to a report by the news agency Reuters early Saturday (September 9). Addressing a press conference on Friday, Hawaii Governor Josh Green said, "There have been a total of 115 fatalities. Our hearts have broken 115 times." Citing details from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Governor Green told reporters that 66 people were potentially still unaccounted for. "And in many cases, they only have the names of these individuals on a list and no other information. This is the number that initially was over 3,000 and then dropped to 385 last week. And now, I repeat is at 66," he added. "Beginning October 8th, one month from today, all travel restrictions will end and West Maui will be open to visitors again. So people from Hawaii and around the world can resume travel to this special place and help it begin to recover economically," the governor told reporters. Governor urges kin to share details about missing loved ones On Friday, Governor Green urged families to share information about any missing loved ones and pointed out that the Maui Police Department continued to make daily progress on missing persons reports. "FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) will continue to assist us with direct leases and rental assistance grants to ensure that people can stay housed for 18 months well into 2025. And these costs will be covered by federal assistance, state resources, and humanitarian aid," Greene said. He also said that the administration intends to contract with three to five hotels locally to be able to lease their entire properties long-term for the recovery effort, which will serve as an additional housing safety net. The wildfires in Maui were the deadliest in the United States in over a century. The fires scorched much of the historic town of Lahaina. Reuters earlier reported that over 2,200 buildings have been destroyed and another 500 been damaged by the blaze. The United Kingdom (UK) will not change its immigration policy to help secure a free trade deal with India, a spokesperson of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said on Thursday (September 8). Addressing a press conference, the spokesperson said Prime Minister Sunak believed that the current levels of immigration were too high. "To be crystal clear, there are no plans to change our immigration policy to achieve this free trade agreement and that includes student visas," the spokesperson added. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, there is growing optimism that a free trade deal between India and the UK could conclude this year as both countries agreed on the broad contours of the pact. Sunak, who will be participating in the G20 summit in New Delhi this weekend, told his ministers this week that negotiations were progressing but that he would only agree on an approach that worked for the whole of Britain. Citing an official statement, the news agency AFP reported that the attacks targeted the Timbuktu boat on the Niger River and an army position at Bamba, in the northern Gao region with a provisional toll of 49 civilians and 15 soldiers killed. It is not yet clear how many people were killed in each of these attacks. The AFP report said that the attacks were claimed by a group affiliated with Al-Qaeda. According to the army, the boat was attacked around 1100 GMT. In a separate statement, the boat's operator Comanav said the vessel was plying an established route between cities along the river and was targeted by at least three rockets. Army evacuating passengers from boat Images shared on social media showed a cloud of black smoke rising above the Niger River. A Comanav official, who did not wish to be identified, told AFP the boat was immobilised on the river and the army was evacuating passengers. Niger is a vital transport link in a region where road infrastructure is poor and railways absent. Tuesday's attacks come after the Support Group for Islam and Muslims (GSIM), which is allied with Al-Qaeda, announced in August that it was blockading Timbuktu, the historic crossroads city of northern Mali. Indian-American Nikki Haley has emerged as the only Republican presidential candidate who can beat President Joe Biden in the 2024 US elections, a new poll has revealed.

Haley, the only woman running for the Republican nomination, had a six percentage-point lead over Biden in a CNN/SSRS poll released on Thursday, with the President trailing Haley 49 per cent to 43 per cent in a hypothetical match between the two.

"Hypothetical matchups suggest there would be no clear leader should Biden face one of the other major Republican contenders, with one notable exception: Biden runs behind former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley," CNN reported.

The Haley campaign welcomed the polls saying: "This poll confirms what many Democrats and Republicans are saying: Democrats are terrified of running against Nikki Haley."

"Nikki Haley is our best hope in taking back the White House. We only have one shot. It’s time to play to win," Ken Farnaso, Haley's Press Secretary, said responding to the CNN poll.

Fresh out of the first Republican primary debate late last month, Haley told CBS News that she, and not Trump, is going to be the party's 2024 presidential nominee.

According to the CNN polls, the other Republican candidates polled neck-and-neck with Biden with former president Donald Trump, who is widely ahead in the party primary, drawing 47 per cent against the Biden's 46 per cent.

On a potential rematch between Trump and Biden, 47 per cent of those polled said they would choose the former President and 46 per cent said they would choose the latter.

In contrast, 44 per cent said that any Democratic nominee would be better than Trump, while 38 per cent said the former President is better than any Democratic pick.

Former Vice President Mike Pence and Senator Tim Scott both drew 46 per cent to Biden’s 44 per cent, and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie received 44 per cent to Biden’s 42 per cent.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis tied with Biden at 47 per cent, while Indian-American entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy trailed at 45 per cent against Biden's 46 per cent.

Rescue teams in Turkey on Thursday (September 7) raced to save an American who developed internal bleeding while exploring the Morca Cave while nearly 3,400 feet underground near the country's Mediterranean coast.

Rescue teams in Turkey on Thursday (September 7) raced to save an American who developed internal bleeding while exploring the Morca Cave while nearly 3,400 feet underground near the country's Mediterranean coast. Turkey's caving federation said that 150 rescuers were trying to reach Mark Dickey, who developed gastrointestinal bleeding while deep inside the cave. He had first fallen ill last Sunday, AFP reported. The federation said this operation was logistically and technically one of the largest cave rescues in the world. The federation launched a rescue operation with the help of the country's emergency response service on Tuesday. Dickey, 40, fell ill at a depth of 1,120 metres while accompanied by an international team of explorers. The federation said he was placed under observation at a base camp located 1,040 metres underground and was given an infusion of blood delivered by rescuers and medics. American's condition becoming stable: Caving federation Turkey's caving federation also said on Thursday that Dickey's condition was becoming stable. "His bleeding has stopped and he can walk with help, but it is not possible for him to get out without a stretcher," the federation added. Rescue teams, meanwhile, said it could take several days to safely bring the 40-year-old out. The Morca Cave is Turkey's third-deepest, according to the federation, running to a maximum depth of 1,276 metres. The World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday (September 6) warned of concerning trends for Covid ahead of winter in the Northern Hemisphere and called for increased vaccinations and surveillance.

The World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday (September 6) warned of concerning trends for Covid ahead of winter in the Northern Hemisphere and called for increased vaccinations and surveillance. Addressing a press conference, WHO Chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, "We continue to see concerning trends for COVID-19 ahead of the winter season in the Northern Hemisphere." Ghebreyesus said that deaths were increasing in some parts of the Middle East and Asia, intensive care unit (ICU) admissions were increasing in Europe and hospitalisations were increasing in several regions. However, the WHO chief pointed out that only 43 countries (out of the 194 member states) were reporting deaths to the agency, and only 20 provided information about hospitalisations. 'Hundreds of thousands hospitalised for Covid': WHO During Wednesday's press conference, WHO's technical lead on Covid Maria Van Kerkhove said the agency estimated that there were hundreds of thousands of people hospitalised for the virus. "That is a worry given that when we get to colder months, in some countries, people tend to spend more time indoors together, and viruses that transmit through the air like Covid will take advantage of that," Kerkhove added. She further emphasised the importance of testing as well as vaccination. "Small numbers of the highly mutated BA.2.86 subvariant have also now been detected in 11 countries," Tedros said, adding the WHO was monitoring this variant to assess its transmissibility and potential impact. "The increase in hospitalisations and deaths shows that COVID-19 is here to stay, and that we will continue to need tools to fight it," he also said. WHO's Covid knowledge-sharing platform secures 3 license agreements Last week, the WHO's global Covid knowledge-sharing platform called COVID-19 Technology Access Pool (C-TAP) secured three new licensing agreements to transfer vaccine technologies. According to a report by the news agency AFP on August 29, the C-TAP had until now secured licensing agreements with the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) for an antibody test, and with the US National Institute of Health (NIH) for the development of therapeutics, early-stage vaccines and diagnostic tools. However, the WHO said the number of agreements doubled with the CSIC providing a second one -- this time for a COVID-19 vaccine prototype -- and the University of Chile providing one for a test of Covid antibody neutralisation levels. Taiwanese technology services provider Foxconn's chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) Young Liu has said that India is poised to emerge as the new manufacturing centre in the world, with the supplier ecosystem likely to develop faster than the time it took to come up in China, Indian media reported on Wednesday (September 6).

According to a report by the Times of India (TOI), Liu said that Foxconn would expand its operations in India as business grows in higher consumer purchases. Liu added that Foxconn, which is a major supplier of Apple products, continues to expand its presence in India in response to customer needs. He also said that the supply chain ecosystem, which took over three decades to build in China, is likely to come up faster in India. "There are huge opportunities for the local electronics industry to develop,” the Foxxcon chairman added, TOI reported. Foxconn has been operating in India since 2005, and Liu has time and again emphasised the growing proximity between India and Taiwan. On July 28, Liu met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Gujarat's Gandhinagar. Prime Minister Modi welcomed the company's plans to expand semiconductor and chip manufacturing capacity in India. Foxconn's Q3 outlook better Foxconn said on Tuesday that revenue in August fell eight per cent year-on-year but the forecast is of a better business outlook ahead of new product releases by Apple. The company said that revenue last month reached $12.93 billion, down 12 per cent from July. "With the second half of the year peak season currently underway, operations will gradually ramp up," Foxconn said. "The outlook for the third quarter, which will be better than the second quarter, is expected to increase at an on-quarter pace higher than the average level of the previous two years," it added.
