A day after more than 150 people were injured due to violent clashes in Israel's Tel Aviv between Eritrean government supporters celebrating an Eritrea Day event and opponents of President Isaias Afwerki, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, on Sunday (September 3) said Israel is considering deporting 1,000 Eritreans who participated in the "riots".

A report by the Times of Israel early Sunday said that a police officer was in serious condition after doctors removed part of a camping stove from his head which was apparently thrown at him. The officer was hospitalised at Sheba Medical Center near Tel Aviv, and he was among the 50 officers who were injured during the clashes that broke out during an event organised by the Eritrean embassy to mark Revolution Day. Earlier, Israeli medical officials said that over 114 people had been treated for injuries, including about 30 police officers. Police fired stun grenades to break up the clashes, while some protesters hurled stones at police and set fire to trash bins. Videos shared on social media showed Eritrean government supporters beating anti-government protesters. Israeli PM about the violence in Tel Aviv A day after the violent clashes broke out in the Israeli financial capital, the Israeli PM said that the protesters had crossed a "red line". "At the special ministerial committee I established today, we asked for a few swift measures, including expelling a thousand regime supporters who took part in these riots," Netanyahu said, in a statement. He added, "They cannot of course claim to be refugees. They support this regime. If they support it so much, they can return to the country of their origin." Police arrest 39 suspects for assaulting officers Citing police, a report by the news agency AFP said that 39 suspects were arrested for assaulting and throwing stones at the officers. Some of these suspects were carrying "weapons, tear gas, and an electrical stun gun." The Police further said they were reinforcing their personnel in Tel Aviv. Eritrea has been led by authoritarian President Isaias Afwerki since its formal declaration of independence in 1993. Being one of the most isolated sites in the world, Eritrea is near the bottom of the global rankings for press freedom, human rights, civil liberties, and economic development. According to Assaf, an organisation that aids refugees, around 25,500 Eritrean asylum seekers currently live in Israel. Most of these asylum-seekers fled to Israel over its border with Egypt. They have said they will face persecution if they are repatriated. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Russia on Sunday (September 3) launched a 3.5-hour-long drone attack in Ukraine's Odesa, hitting Danube River port infrastructure and injuring at least two people.

Russia on Sunday (September 3) launched a 3.5-hour-long drone attack in Ukraine's Odesa, hitting Danube River port infrastructure and injuring at least two people. Meanwhile, Russia said it hit targets on the Danube port of Reni, on the border with NATO member Romania. Russia hits Ukraine's Danube port on Romanian border According to a report by the news agency Reuters, the Ukrainian Air Force said that its air defence systems shot down 22 of the 25 Iranian-made Shahed drones that Russia launched on the Odesa region in the early hours of Sunday. "Russian terrorists continue to attack port infrastructure in the hope of provoking a food crisis and famine in the world," the Ukrainian president's chief of staff Andriy Yermak wrote on Telegram and posted a photograph of a firefighter directing water at the burning ruins of concrete structures. In a statement, the Russian army said it "carried out a group drone strike on fuel storage facilities used to supply military equipment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the port of Reni, in the Odesa region." It added, "All designated targets were hit." Romania 'strongly condemns' attack on Danube After the attack, Romanian defence ministry released a statement and strongly condemned repeated Russian attacks on Ukraine's Danube port and called it "unjustified". The "reiterates in the strongest terms that these attacks against civilian targets and infrastructure in Ukraine are unjustified and in deep contradiction with the rules of international humanitarian law". It added, "At no time did the means of attack used by the Russian Federation generate any direct military threat to the national territory or territorial waters of Romania." Two killed in biggest Russian strike in Kyiv in months Sunday's drone attack came three days after Russia launched its biggest airstrike in Kyiv in months, killing two people. Reuters reported three people were wounded in the strike and combat drones attacked infrastructure in the central region of Zhytomyr. "The blast wave broke all the windows, the entry doors are broken too. We were terribly scared," said Liudmyla Savchuk, a 57-year-old teacher whose apartment in northwestern Kyiv was damaged. "Then there was another explosion in a couple of seconds, 20 or 30 seconds. We're cleaning everything now," Savchuk added. Russia has conducted regular, but smaller, air strikes on Kyiv this summer, and hit the Ukrainian capital with large-scale aerial attacks in May. "Kyiv has not experienced such a powerful attack since spring. The enemy launched a massive, combined attack using drones and missiles," Serhiy Popko, the head of the city's military administration said on Telegram. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made a strong pitch for altering the approach on climate talks, from restrictive to constructive, and urged nations not to focus on “don't do this or that”.

In an interview to PTI ahead of the G20 Leaders' Summit this weekend, the prime minister said there was no “one-size-fits-all” solution to fight climate change. The prime minister said India has left no stone unturned in meeting its climate goals despite accounting for less than five per cent of the cumulative emissions.

“So, we are certainly on track while also tailoring in various factors needed to ensure growth,” he said.

“We are perhaps the first among the G20 countries to have achieved our climate targets nine years ahead of the scheduled date,” the prime minister said.

He said India's action against single-use plastic has been recognised across the world and has also made great strides in safe sanitation and cleanliness.

The prime minister said India has moved from being just a member of global efforts to playing a leading role in many initiatives.

“Our principle is simple – diversity is our best bet, whether in society or in terms of our energy mix. There are no one-size-fits-all solutions.

"Given the different pathways countries are on, our pathways for energy transition will be different,” he said to a question on progress on climate action targets in the post-Ukraine war era.

The prime minister said he was “extremely positive” about the future of the fight against climate change.

“We are working with other nations to alter the approach from a restrictive to a constructive approach. Rather than focusing purely on the approach of don't do this or that, we want to bring in an attitude that makes people and nations aware of what they can do and help them with that, in terms of finance, technology and other resources,” Modi said.

In response to a separate question, the prime minister said there have been many climate meetings over the decades, but despite the best intentions the discussions would end up revolving around who is to blame.

“But we took a positive and affirmative approach with a ‘can do' spirit. We set up the International Solar Alliance and took the initiative to bring countries together under the vision of ‘One World One Sun One Grid',” he said.

The prime minister said India also started the Coalition for Disaster Resilience so that countries across the world, especially developing countries, learn from each other and build infrastructure that is resilient even during disasters.

“We have also worked with small island nations of the world to further their interests, including under the Forum of India and Pacific Island Countries,” he said.

The prime minister said India has been making great progress in climate-centric initiatives as it had ramped up solar energy capacity 20-fold in just a few years.

“India is among the top four nations in the world in terms of wind energy. In the electric vehicle revolution, India is playing an important role in both innovation and adoption,” he said.

The prime minister said initiatives like the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure are bringing countries together for the planet.

He said the ISA has got a great response with over 100 countries joining it.

“Our Mission LiFE initiative focuses on Lifestyle for Environment. Today, in each society we have people who are health conscious. What they buy, what they eat, what they do – each decision is based on how it serves their health,” the prime minister said.

Modi said their choices are not only guided by how it will affect them today but also by the long-term impact.

“Similarly, people across the world can come together to become planet-conscious. Each lifestyle decision can be made based on what impact it will have on the planet in the long term,” the prime minister said.

A primary school in China has made headlines after it announced that it will charge students for taking afternoon naps on desks, mats or beds. According to a report by the South China Morning Post (SCMP) on Sunday (September 3), the Jiesheng Primary School in Guangdong Province will charge up to US$90 a term for taking naps. Citing local media, the report said that local bureau education officials described the charges as not a unified regulation, but added that private schools were entitled to make the move. This development has triggered a debate online. School notice reveals types of charges As per the SCMP report, a screenshot of the Jiesheng Primary School's notice revealed the types of charges that students will have to pay to take a nap. Sleeping at the desk would incur a charge of US$28 (20 yuan). For those who prefer to lie on mats in classrooms, the fee increases to $49 (around 360 yuan) while those preferring to sleep in beds in private rooms would have to pay $93 (around 680 yuan). A staff member at the school, who chose to remain anonymous, told local media the existence of these nap charges. The staff member said the new charges were in line with official regulations. However, the member also said this rule was not mandatory and students could choose to go back home during their lunch break. A spokesperson for Dongguan City Development and Reform Bureau said the charges were reasonable as teachers were required to be present to supervise and take care of students while they were taking a nap. 'Is this a joke?' The plan to charge students of Jiesheng Primary School for napping caused angry reactions online. As per the report, one online observer said, "Is this a joke? The school has gone crazy just to make money." Another observer called the plan ridiculous and questioned whether the school would charge a fee for going to the restroom or breathing. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Saturday (September 2) urged authorities to enforce laws strictly preventing city residents from unlawfully occupying apartment blocks without violating their rights.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Saturday (September 2) urged authorities to enforce laws strictly preventing city residents from unlawfully occupying apartment blocks without violating their rights. "Local government has to enforce the laws," Ramaphosa said at a governing African National Congress party event, the news agency Reuters reported. Ramaphosa's remarks came two days after more than 70 people died in a fire in a Johannesburg building that was occupied illegally. The five-storey building was owned by municipal authorities, but officials said it was "invaded and hijacked" by unknown groups. Investigators have not determined the cause of the blaze which is considered one of the worst disasters in South Africa. "This has given us a wake-up call, and I have said that our cities and municipalities must now pay attention to how people live. We do encourage people to live in the inner city ...but we need to do it in accordance with our laws," Ramaphosa said during Saturday's event. 'Some fire victims might have been extorted by criminal gangs' Government officials said that some of the victims of the Johannesburg building fire may have been renting from, or were being extorted by, criminal gangs in the so-called "hijacked buildings" syndicates. Meanwhile, municipal officials said that efforts to evict residents in illegally occupied buildings have been often hamstrung by court orders stopping the evictions. Reuters further reported that many such buildings have become dilapidated centres of drug trafficking and other lawlessness. Fires break out as residents rely on illegal electricity connections, gas burners, and candles. Sniffer dogs search for clues On Friday, police with sniffer dogs searched through the gutted remains of the building to look for clues. Most of the bodies of the victims were burned beyond recognition and investigators would have to rely on DNA samples from relatives to identify them, Thembalethu Mpahlaza, from Gauteng province's Forensic Pathology Services, told Reuters. Authorities urged those displaced by the fire to leave and overnight provided buses to take them to a homeless shelter. However, many chose to stay, hoping to save what was left of their belongings. Biden doesn't meet Florida Governor DeSantis, says ‘I'm not disappointed’ During his Florida visit, President Biden did not meet with Governor Ron DeSantis, and said he was not disappointed by the Republican governor's absence and said DeSantis had helped plan the trip. On Friday, Governor DeSantis' spokesperson said he had no plans to meet Biden, adding the security preparations alone that would go into setting up such a meeting would shut down ongoing recovery efforts. On being asked if he was disappointed DeSantis did not come, Biden said no. "No, I'm not disappointed. He may have had other reasons. ... But he did help us plan this," Biden said, adding DeSantis "sat with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and decided where we should go, where would be the least disruption." The president also said he was pleased that Republican Senator Rick Scott had come despite their disagreement on many issues. Muratov was the chief editor of Novaya Gazeta- a newspaper that was widely respected overseas for its investigative reporting and was frequently critical of the Kremlin. Citing local media, the news agency Reuters reported early Saturday the Russian justice ministry said that Muratov was added to the list of foreign agents. Who else has been placed on the foreign agents' list? Reuters reported that Russian nationals placed on the foreign agents' list included another journalist who wrote articles favourable to Ukraine, a comedian opposed to the war in Ukraine and a historian from Chechnya. These so-called foreign agents have been subjected to police searches and other punitive measures. While Muratov is still in Russia, many on the list have left the country since the launch of Russia's offensive in Ukraine in February last year. In recent years, Russia has methodically targeted people and organizations critical of the Kremlin, branding many as “foreign agents.” Muratov puts up his Nobel Prize for auction Muratov was a a co-laureate of the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize, and he later put up his Nobel medal for auction, receiving $103.5 million which he said would be used to aid refugee children from Ukraine. Addressing the auction event on June 20, 2022, before bidding began, Muratov said, "We hope that this will serve as an example for other people like a flash mob, for other people to auction their valuable possessions, their heirlooms, to help refugees, Ukrainian refugees around the world." Gabon's army said on Saturday (September 2) that it would reopen the country's borders, closed in the wake of the military coup that ousted ex-president Ali Bongo.

Gabon's army said on Saturday (September 2) that it would reopen the country's borders, closed in the wake of the military coup that ousted ex-president Ali Bongo. A spokesman for Gabon's military rulers said on state TV that they had "decided with immediate effect to reopen the land, sea and air borders as of this Saturday". Gabon's new military leader General Brice Oligui Nguema said on Friday (September 1) that the suspension of democracy will only be temporary amid the ongoing coup. In a speech, General Nguema said, "The dissolution of institutions during the coup is temporary," adding it is a question of reorganising them to make them more democratic. Nguema warned business leaders in Gabon against "over-billing" and told them to commit to the development of the country. "It is difficult to perceive, at this stage, your commitment or patriotism when it comes to the development expected by our compatriots," he added. The military chief vowed to make sure the overcharged money comes back to the state. Nguema also invited foreign donors, diplomats and members of international organisations to meet with him. Will not rush to elections: Nguema Nguema also said on Friday that the junta will proceed "quickly but surely" but that it would avoid elections that "repeat the same mistakes" by keeping the same people in power. "Going as quickly as possible does not mean organising ad hoc elections, where we will end up with the same errors," he said. He is due to be sworn in as "transitional president." The junta has dissolved Gabon's institutions, cancelled the election results and closed the borders. On Friday, images from local media showed Bongo's son Noureddin Bongo Valentin and other arrested officials in front of suitcases filled with cash allegedly seized from their homes.
