As many as 16 people have been killed and around 100 people have been injured since the fighting renewed at the Ein el-Hilweh refugee camp in Lebanon last Thursday (September 7). According to a report by Al Jazeera on Wednesday (September 13), scores of civilians have been forced to flee to safer areas amid the failure of multiple ceasefire agreements. The refugee camp has been rocked by factional clashes since late July between the Palestinian mainstream movement Fatah and Islamist fighters.

On Wednesday, fresh clashes were reported at the camp which killed six and injured 13 others. On Tuesday too, clashes briefly broke out at the camp, the news agency AFP reported.&nbsp;

And last Thursday, fighting resumed following a month-long ceasefire, killing 10.&nbsp;

<h2>Fresh ceasefire collapses</h2>

On Monday, Lebanon's General Security agency announced a cease-fire with Senior Palestinian officials, including leaders of Fatah and Hamas expressing their full commitment to consolidating it. The leaders also agreed to "work to facilitate the return of those forced from their homes". However, the ceasefire collapsed on Wednesday.&nbsp;

The Ein el-Hilweh refugee camp is located on the outskirts of Sidon. It was created for Palestinians who were driven out or fled during the war that accompanied the establishment of the Israeli state in 1948.

By longstanding convention, the Lebanese army stays out of the Palestinian camps and leaves the factions to handle security. The camp is home to over 54,000 registered refugees and thousands of Palestinians who joined them in recent years.

The UN agency that deals with Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, said that the fighting has displaced hundreds of families.

Morning brief: Joe Biden brushes off House impeachment inquiry, & more

The United Nations (UN) said on Thursday (September 14) that most of the deaths due to floods in Libya's Derna could have been averted if early warning and emergency management systems had functioned properly.

The United Nations (UN) said on Thursday (September 14) that most of the deaths due to floods in Libya's Derna could have been averted if early warning and emergency management systems had functioned properly. Speaking to reporters in Geneva, Petteri Taalas, head of the UN's World Meteorological Organization (WMO), said, "With better functioning coordination in the crisis-wracked country, "they could have issued the warnings and the emergency management forces would have been able to carry out the evacuation of the people, and we could have avoided most of the human casualties." Taalas said that the lack of weather forecasting and dissemination and action on early warnings was a large contributor to the size of the disaster. He also said that the years-long internal conflict in the country meant its meteorological "observing network has been very much destroyed, the IT systems have been destroyed." "The flooding events came and there was no evacuation taking place because there was not the proper early warning systems in place," the WMO chief further told reporters. "Of course, we cannot fully avoid economic losses, but we could have also minimised those losses by having proper services in place," he added. Thousands dead, thousands more missing The reported death toll due to the floods has crossed 5,000. Confirmed death tolls given by officials so far have varied, but the number is in thousands. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, Derna Mayor Abdulmenam al-Ghaithi said deaths in the city could reach 18,000-20,000, based on the extent of the damage. "We actually need teams specialised in recovering bodies," Mayor al-Ghaithi said, adding the city will be infected by an epidemic due to the large number of bodies under the rubble and in the water. Several countries have rushed to provide relief aid to Libya including rescue teams, food, water emergency shelters, medical supplies and more body bags. Climate experts have linked the disaster to the impacts of a heating planet combined with the country's years of chaos and decaying infrastructure. The floods were caused by a huge Mediterranean storm Daniel that burst dams, swept away buildings, and wiped out as much as a quarter of the city. Storm Daniel gathered strength during an unusually hot summer and earlier lashed Turkey, Bulgaria and Greece. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Libya floods: UN says most casualties in Derna could have been averted

The Iranian government warned on Tuesday (September 12) that it would not tolerate any attempts of creating instability ahead of the first death anniversary of Iranian-Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini, and the the months-long protests her alleged custodial death sparked.

The Iranian government warned on Tuesday (September 12) that it would not tolerate any attempts of creating instability ahead of the first death anniversary of Iranian-Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini, and the the months-long protests her alleged custodial death sparked. In a television interview, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said, "Those who intend to abuse Mahsa Amini's name under this pretext, to be an agent of foreigners, to create this instability in the country, we know what will happen to them." Amini, 22, died on September 16 last year after her arrest in Tehran for an alleged breach of Iran's dress code for women. Authorities said that the 22-year-old died due to a health problem. However, the family and activists said she suffered a blow to the head while in custody. Her death triggered months of nationwide protests against the government under the slogan "Woman, Life, Freedom." Hundreds of people, including dozens of police personnel, were killed in the demonstrations. No protest plans announced to mark Amini's death anniversary A report by the news agency AFP on Thursday said that no plans for protests have been overtly announced to mark Amini's death anniversary on Saturday, which is also a religious public holiday. Last week, authorities shut down at least five social media pages and arrested the six individuals behind them, on accusations they were "organising riots" for the anniversary. Since shortly after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, women in Iran have been subjected to cover their heads and necks, and encouraged to wear modest garments. Even though last year's protests have cooled down, many Iranian women, especially in Tehran, have been increasingly flouting the strict dress code. The parliament has discussed a bill that would toughen penalties on those flouting the dress code. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. American technological giant Apple's recently launched iPhones- iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max support Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC), which is developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

American technological giant Apple's recently launched iPhones- iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max support Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC), which is developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). According to a report by Tech Crunch on Wednesday (September 13), this is the first time that Apple has added support for NavIC to any of its iPhone models. The report said that Apple has not yet specified which features will be included in the deployment. It added that this navigation technology is not there on the standard iPhone 15 and the iPhone 15 Plus variants. What is NavIC? According to ISRO's website, NavIC is designed with a constellation of 7 satellites and a network of ground stations operating 24 x 7. The technology was established to meet India's positioning, navigation and timing requirements. "Three satellites of the constellation are placed in geostationary orbit, at 32.5°E, 83°E and 129.5°E respectively, and four satellites are placed in inclined geosynchronous orbit with equatorial crossing of 55°E and 111.75°E respectively, with inclination of 29° (two satellites in each plane)," the website says. "The ground network consists of control centre, precise timing facility, range and integrity monitoring stations, two-way ranging stations, etc," it adds. NavIC offers two services: Standard Position Service (SPS) for civilian users and Restricted Service (RS) for strategic users. The navigation technology's coverage area includes India and a region up to 1,500 kilometres beyond the Indian boundary. A few applications of the technology are transportation, location-based services, personal mobility, and scientific research. Kim Aris, the younger son of Myanmar's ousted leader Aung Sang Suu Kyi, said on Wednesday (September 13) that he was increasingly worried about his imprisoned mother's health and about Myanmar's political crisis.

Kim Aris, the younger son of Myanmar's ousted leader Aung Sang Suu Kyi, said on Wednesday (September 13) that he was increasingly worried about his imprisoned mother's health and about Myanmar's political crisis. Speaking to the Associated Press, Aris, who lives in London, said, "I’d just really like to have some form of contact with her so that I know that she’s OK because at the moment she has no access to her legal counsel." “She has no access to her personal doctors. She’s not allowed any visitors, as far as I’m aware. She’s not even allowed to mingle with the other prisoners, which means she’s basically under a form of solitary confinement,” Aris, 46, added. Not allowed to communicate with mother for over 2.5 yrs: Aris Aris told the Associated Press that he had not been allowed to speak to his mother at all for over two and a half years now. “I’ve always tried to avoid speaking to the media and (have been) avoiding social media all my life. But the situation in Burma (the former name of Myanmar) at the moment is absolutely desperate,” he said. Aris also said, “If only 2% of what has been given to the Ukrainian forces had been given to the resistance forces in Burma, the situation would be very different now.” “So now I’m doing all I can to try and help the situation and bring awareness of this situation to the wider world,” Aris further told the news agency. 'Suu Kyi extremely ill, unable to eat' Aris said he heard that his mother has been extremely ill and has been suffering from gum problems and was unable to eat. “She was suffering from bouts of dizziness and vomiting and couldn’t walk at one stage.” Aung Sang Suu Kyi, 78, was arrested in 2021 when the junta seized power from her democratically elected government. Since then, she has been prosecuted and convicted on more than a dozen charges for offences. The 78-year-old is serving a sentence of 27 years and there is a chance that she might not see her family again. Many countries have called for the release of the ousted leader and thousands of other political prisoners. Aris said on Wednesday that he had spoken with Britain's foreign ministry, but he said there was little the government could do because they did not have a working relationship with the junta. United States President Joe Biden on Wednesday (September 13) brushed off the House Republicans' impeachment proceedings and said an investigation was launched against him as Republicans want to shut down the federal government.

United States President Joe Biden on Wednesday (September 13) brushed off the House Republicans' impeachment proceedings and said an investigation was launched against him as Republicans want to shut down the federal government. Speaking at a Democratic fundraiser in Virginia, President Biden said instead of being concerned about the investigation, he was focused on things that Americans want him focused on, the news agency Associated Press reported. “The best I can tell is they want to impeach me because they want to shut down the government,” Biden said. The president's remarks were the first since Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced the launch of the impeachment inquiry. The report said that McCarthy's sudden decision to direct the inquiry into Biden over the business dealings of his son Hunter and the Biden family's finances won over even the most reluctant Republicans, with some GOP lawmakers pushing for swift action. On Wednesday, the speaker held a meeting of House Republicans justifying his reasoning for the inquiry sought by former US president Donald Trump. The inquiry is centred around whether Biden benefited from Hunter Biden's foreign business dealings. Impeachment inquiry baseless: White House On Wednesday, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that the impeachment inquiry was baseless, adding no evidence had been produced by Republicans against President Biden. "Their own investigation has actually debunked their ridiculous attacks. And the only reason Speaker McCarthy is doing this political stunt. And we have seen it, you all have reported, is because Marjorie Taylor GREENE has said she threatened to shut down the government. Can you imagine shutting down the government over a political stunt?" Jean-Pierre told reporters. Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman's wife Emma Coronel will be freed in Los Angeles on Wednesday (September 13) following her arrest in 2021 on drug trafficking charges. Citing the Bureau of Prisons, a report by the news agency Reuters said that Coronel would be released from a low-security confinement institution in Los Angeles. She was also given a further two years of supervised release.&nbsp;

Coronel, 34, was arrested and sentenced to three years in prison in 2021 after pleading guilty to three counts of helping the notorious Sinaloa Cartel, which was co-founded by her husband. She pleaded guilty to money laundering, distributing&nbsp;illegal drugs and engaging in financial dealings.

She also admitted to acting as a courier between El Chapo and other organisation members while he was being held in Mexico's Altiplano prison after his arrest in 2014.

Coronel's sentencing judge said she quickly accepted responsibility and agreed to forfeit nearly $1.5 million of proceeds from her criminal activity to the US government, and her three-year sentence was later reduced.

El Chapo is currently serving a life sentence in the United States after he was extradited in 2017 following two escapes from maximum security prisons in Mexico. In April, the US Justice Department announced charges against Chapo's three sons and other members of the Sinaloa cartel, in a sprawling fentanyl-trafficking investigation.

Attorney General Merrick Garland, standing alongside Drug Enforcement Administration chief Anne Milgram and other top federal prosecutors, unveiled the indictments in three districts aimed at hitting the cartel’s global network.

"Families and communities across our country are being devastated by the fentanyl epidemic. We will never forget those who bear responsibility for this tragedy. And we will never stop working to hold them accountable for their crimes in the United States," Garland said.&nbsp;

The US National Air Guard said on Tuesday (September 12) that it could have the first Ukrainian pilots trained on F-16 fighter jets before the end of this year, though it would be longer than before they fly combat missions.

The US National Air Guard said on Tuesday (September 12) that it could have the first Ukrainian pilots trained on F-16 fighter jets before the end of this year, though it would be longer than before they fly combat missions. The Ukrainian pilots are expected to arrive at Morris Air National Guard Base in Tucson by October. The US Air National Guard's director Lt.Gen Michael Loh said the pilots are being evaluated for their English language skills. Depending on their proficiency (in the English language) and previous fighter jet experience, they could complete the training (on F-16s) within three months, Lt.Gen told the annual Air Force Association convention in National Harbor, Maryland. “As soon as they’re given a go-ahead, they’ll be coming over and they’ll start their training immediately,” he added. The Air National Guard's director also said that to meet the quick training timeframe, Tucson would likely shift some of its other international pilot training commitments to prioritise training Ukrainian pilots. War-torn Ukraine seeking up to 50 F-16 fighter jets Since the earliest days of the Russian offensive in February last year, Ukrainian leaders have asked for fighter jets from Western countries. However, for the first year and a half (into the war), the United States and other allied partners focused on providing other weapons systems, citing factors such as the cost of jets, difficulty in maintaining them, and the concerns about further provoking Russia. The F-16 jets are still in production, and because they are widely used by many international partners, there are plenty of spare parts. According to a report by the news agency Associated Press early Wednesday, Ukraine is seeking up to 50 F-16s or the equivalent of three fighter squadrons from coalition countries. Last month, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukraine was set to receive 42 of these jets. During Tuesday's convention in National Harbor, Air National Guard's director Lt.Gen Loh also said that the ongoing war in Ukraine has become a gruesome, slow-moving fight with ground tactics and trench warfare reminiscent of World War I, and for that, the F-16’s ability to suppress enemy air defences and conduct low-altitude attacks could help Kyiv. The International Organization for Migration (IOM), an agency of the United Nations (UN), said on Wednesday (September 13) that at least 30,000 people have been left homeless due to the catastrophic floods in Libya's Derna. "At least 30,000 individuals displaced in Derna," the IOM said, adding that thousands more had been left homeless in nearby towns.

The floods were caused by a huge&nbsp;Mediterranean storm that burst dams, swept away buildings and wiped out as much as a quarter of the city. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, officials in eastern Libya said the death toll so far stands at more than 5,000, and fatalities are expected to climb. A report by The Guardian, meanwhile, said that the number of fatalities may climb to 20,000.&nbsp;

Around 10,000 people are estimated to be missing, and many are believed to have been swept out to sea. Derna was home to around 100,000 people, and many of its multi-storey buildings on the banks of the riverbed collapsed, with people, their homes and cars vanishing in the raging waters.

Earlier, the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said that emergency teams had been mobilised to help on the ground. Amid&nbsp;rising global concern, several countries, including Qatar and Turkey, rushed aid to Libya.

Citing authorities, the news agency AFP reported on Wednesday that rescue teams from Turkey arrived in eastern Libya. France, meanwhile, said it was sending a field hospital and around 50 military and civilian personnel able to treat 500 people a day.&nbsp;

"Staff on the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic and Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence have heard testimony from a whistleblower alleging that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) offered six analysts significant monetary incentives to change their position on COVID-19’s origin," the statement said.

As per the statement, the whistleblower alleged that of the seven members assigned to the CIA team tasked with analysing the virus' origins, six officers concluded that the virus likely originated from a lab in Wuhan, China. "The CIA, then however, allegedly offered financial incentives to six of the experts involved in the investigation to change their conclusion in favour of a zoonotic origin," the statement added.&nbsp;

In a letter addressed to CIA's Director William Burns on Tuesday, the <a href="https://oversight.house.gov/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/2023.09.12-SSCP-HPSCI-Letter-to-CIA-Re.-Origins-of-COVID.pdf">Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence's chairperson Mike Turner </a>said these allegations were concerning.

Turner said that the allegations required the Coronavirus Pandemic (Select Subcommittee) and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI) to conduct further oversight of how the CIA handled its internal investigation into the origins of Covid.

To assist the committees with the investigation, Turner requested Burns to provide the above committees with documents that include details about the establishment of all iterations of the Covid Discovery Team, the communications between or among the members of all iterations of the team regarding Covid's origin, and all documents and communications between or among members of all iterations of the team and other employees or contractors of the agency regarding the origin&nbsp;of the virus.

"Should the required information not be produced in an expeditious and satisfactory manner, you should expect the Committee, or Committees, to use its additional tools and authorities to satisfy our legislative and oversight requirements," the letter added.&nbsp;

China's arms exports have declined because of poor quality, and weak and inconsistent performance. Citing a report by Directus, the news agency ANI reported on Wednesday (September 13) that in the last 10 years, China's weaponry exports dropped by nearly a quarter. The People's Liberation Army (PLA) is plagued by the issue of low-quality weapons. The country's arms shipments fell 7.8 per cent between 2016 and 2020 when compared to the preceding five-year period, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). The demand for Chinese weaponry increased as it was less expensive than the competitors' offerings. Cindy Zheng, a researcher at RAND Corporation, said that China has attracted customers for its military equipment with cut-rate pricing and financing, but there are hidden costs, especially when gear malfunctions. “A lack of technological compatibility with the Chinese military equipment can prove particularly expensive," Zheng added. Chinese-made weapons not just technologically inferior, but...: Expert China is currently supplying weapons to more than 53 countries, most of which are not markets for big arms suppliers. Alexander Vuving, professor at the Daniel K Inouye Asia-Pacific Centre for Security Studies, said that Chinese-made weapons were not just technologically inferior but remain untested on the battlefield. Watch | China's arms export decline due to defective quality, unreliable performance × Myanmar, which is a major importer of Chinese armaments, expressed concerns about the low accuracy of the radar on Chinese jets. It recently grounded these jets because of technical issues. The report said that Myanmar paid a high price for these jets but they were still in need of repair four years after they were delivered. Nigeria, another importer of Chinese armaments, was forced to send seven of nine Chengdu F-7 fighters to Beijing. China's all-weather ally also encountered problems with Chinese-made navy warships, the report added. Collin Koh, a maritime security analyst based in Singapore, said that importer countries have been concerned about the absence of combat testing for most Chinese hardware. Another problem is political tension with China in the case of integration with non-Chinese systems. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community.
