The talks between India and Canada over the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) have been put on hold because of political reasons. Citing a senior government official, Livemint reported late Friday (September 15) that the negotiations would resume once the political issues are resolved. The official said that there were certain political developments in Canada to which New Delhi objected. “The moment the political issues are sorted out, the talks will resume. So, it is only a pause," the official told the publication. Earlier, Canada made a similar announcement saying that such a pause was needed to take stock. Canadian minister postpones planned trade mission to India The above developments come amid Canadian Trade Minister Mary Ng postponing a planned trade mission to India next month. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, a spokesperson for Minister Ng confirmed the postponement and refused to elaborate. During the G20 Summit in India's capital city New Delhi last week, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi snubbed his Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau allowing only a short, informal meeting on the sidelines. During their meeting, Modi conveyed strong concerns over Sikh protests against India. Canada has the highest population of Sikhs outside their home state of Punjab in India, and the country has been the site of many protests that have irked India. In a statement, the Modi government said that extremist elements in Canada "are promoting secessionism and inciting violence against Indian diplomats, damaging diplomatic premises and threatening the Indian community in Canada and their places of worship." As per reports, while Trudeau was in New Delhi for the G20 Summit, Khalistani separatists held a so-called referendum in Surrey, British Columbia. Former United States ambassador to Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Richard Olson was sentenced to three years of probation on Friday (September 15) for violating federal ethics laws. According to a report by the news agency AFP, Olson was also fined $93,400 after pleading guilty to charges that he misused his official position for personal gain.

The US Attorney's Office for Washington said that American law prohibits senior officials like Olson from representing a foreign government before any federal agency or from aiding or advising a foreign entity with the intent to influence the US government for one year after leaving their positions.

"The defendant took numerous steps to conceal these illegal activities, including deleting incriminating emails and lying to the FBI during a recorded interview," the office added.

Olson, 61, served as the US envoy to Pakistan from 2012 to 2015. In June last year, he pleaded guilty to making a false statement and violating laws governing lobbying for a foreign government. The US Attorney's Office said that Olson also received favours and benefits from a Pakistani-American businessman identified in court documents only as "Person 1."

The benefits included $25,000 paid to his then-girlfriend to help pay her college tuition and $18,000 in first-class travel for the ambassador to attend a job interview in London.

The 61-year-old was accused of helping the government of Qatar influence US policymakers. "One major favour was that the defendant agreed to lobby members of Congress on Person 1's behalf with respect to weapon sales to Pakistan and Middle Eastern countries that Person 1 was trying to broker," the US Attorney's office also said.

Aid groups in Libya have warned of the growing risk posed by the spread of disease as the country struggles to recover from the devastating flood in Derna. Aid groups in Libya have warned of the growing risk posed by the spread of disease as the country struggles to recover from the devastating flood in Derna. According to a report by the news agency AFP on Saturday (September 16), aid organisations like the Islamic Relief and Doctors Without Borders (MSF) warned that the upcoming period could see the spread of disease as well as grave difficulties in delivering aid to those most in need. More than 11,000 people have died due to the flood in Derna and thousands of others are still missing as bodies keep washing ashore on beaches up to 100 km away. On Saturday, Islamic Relief warned of a second humanitarian crisis and said there is a growing risk of water-borne diseases and shortages of food, shelter and medicine. Risk of water-related diseases "Thousands of people don't have anywhere to sleep and don't have food," said Salah Aboulgasem, the organisation's deputy director of partner development. Aboulgasem added that in conditions like these, diseases could spread quickly as the water systems were contaminated. MSF meanwhile said it was deploying teams to the east to assess water and sanitation. "With this type of event, we can really worry about water-related disease," said Manoelle Carton, MSF's medical coordinator in Derna. US diplomat urges global mobilisation to coordinate aid efforts In a social media post, Stephanie Williams, a US diplomat and former UN envoy to Libya, urged global mobilisation to continue aid efforts in the wake of the flood. Williams warned of the predilection of the country's predatory ruling class to use the pretext of sovereignty and 'national ownership' to steer such a process on their own and in a self-interested manner. Derna struggles to cope with thousands of corpses Residents and rescue workers in Derna are struggling to cope with the thousands of corpses washing up or decaying under rubble. The World Health Organization (WHO) had earlier urged authorities in Libya to stop burying flood victims in mass graves, saying these could bring long-term mental distress to families or cause health risks if located near water. Since the flood ravaged the city, over 1,000 people had so far been buried in that manner, a UN report said. Ovidio Guzman, the son of Mexican drug lord El Chapo, has been extradited to the United States where he is wanted for fentanyl trafficking charges, Mexican and American authorities said on Friday (September 15).

Ovidio Guzman, the son of Mexican drug lord El Chapo, has been extradited to the United States where he is wanted for fentanyl trafficking charges, Mexican and American authorities said on Friday (September 15). In a statement, US Attorney General Merrick Garland said Ovidio's extradition was the latest step in US efforts to attack "every aspect" of the drug trafficking operations run by the Sinaloa Cartel long associated with the Guzman family. "I am also grateful to our Mexican government counterparts for this extradition," Attorney General Garland said, adding the Justice Department would continue to hold accountable those responsible for fueling the opioid epidemic that has devastated too many communities across the country. Guzman was arrested first in 2019 in Culiacan but was released on the orders of the government to avoid bloodshed after the Sinaloa cartel retaliated. He was again captured in January this year following an intense firefight in Sinaloa. US asked for Guzman's extradition in Feb The Joe Biden administration had asked for Guzman's extradition in February so he could face drug charges in a US court. Guzman and his brothers allegedly controlled extensive international operations in the fentanyl trade, reaping hundreds of millions of dollars in profits by "flooding" the United States with the deadly opioid, US court documents showed. El Chapo's wife released from US, will not face charges in Mexico El Chapo's wife Emma Coronel, who was released from a US federal institution on Wednesday, will not face any charges in Mexico. Coronel was sentenced to three years in prison in 2021 after pleading guilty to helping the Sinaloa Cartel, including conspiracy to launder money and distribute illegal drugs and engaging in financial dealings. The Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed she had been released on Wednesday from a low-security confinement institution in Los Angeles. Premoday Khakha, a senior Delhi government official who was suspended from service after he was arrested for repeatedly raping a teenager, has refused to provide sample for semen analysis, local media reported on Friday (September 15).

Premoday Khakha, a senior Delhi government official who was suspended from service after he was arrested for repeatedly raping a teenager, has refused to provide sample for semen analysis, local media reported on Friday (September 15). According to a report by Hindustan Times, the refusal comes after Khakha, 51, was found to be potent and capable of sexual assault under normal circumstances. Accused tells court he underwent vasectomy 18 years ago Last month, Khakha told a court that he underwent a vasectomy (surgery to block sperm from reaching the semen that is ejaculated from the penis) in 2005 and could not rape or impregnate a woman. Speaking to Hindustan Times, a doctor from the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital who chose to remain anonymous, said a board of doctors carried out the 51-year-old's potency test on August 21. Contrary to Khakha's claims that he underwent a vasectomy and was incapable of having sex, the board opined that the suspended Delhi government official was very much capable of sexual acts, the doctor said. The doctor added that for the impregnation claim, doctors need to conduct the virility test. An officer of the Delhi Police told the publication that the police would inform the court about Khakha's refusal (to provide his semen sample) and to carry out the test. The case Khakha was arrested in August for raping his deceased friend’s 17-year-old daughter for several months. Khakha's wife Seema Rani was also booked after authorities found out that she gave abortion pills to the teenager when she became pregnant. "We have arrested the two accused in connection with this case. One of them is Premoday Khakha, 51... the second is his wife Seema Rani, 50. We have arrested Seema Rani as she was aware of the incident and (was) effective in getting the abortion," senior Delhi Police officer Sagar Singh Khalsi said. The matter only came to light when the victim, who is a student of Class 12, was hospitalised over anxiety issues. Khakha was booked under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. European Union (EU) chief Ursula von der Leyen on Wednesday (September 13) called for a global panel of experts and technological companies to confront challenges posed by artificial intelligence (AI).

European Union (EU) chief Ursula von der Leyen on Wednesday (September 13) called for a global panel of experts and technological companies to confront challenges posed by artificial intelligence (AI). "Hundreds of leading AI developers, academics and experts warned recently ... that AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war," der Leyen said during a speech at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, the news agency AFP reported. She added that the proposed AI group should be similar to the UN's IPCC panel, whose reports establish scientific consensus on climate change. "I believe we need a similar body for AI –- on the risks and its benefits for humanity. Yes, with scientists, but also tech companies and independent experts," the EU chief told the parliament. The EU has been leading the charge in regulating AI and aims to greenlight what would be the world's first law covering the technology by the end of this year. "Our AI Act is already a blueprint for the whole world. We must now focus on adopting the rules as soon as possible and turn to implementation," der Leyen also said. AFP reported that the act would not come into force until 2026. US: Tech leaders to join senators for AI forum EU Chief der Leyen's remarks come as American technological leaders including Elon Musk, Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg will join US senators for a closed-door forum on how Congress should set AI safeguards. "For Congress to legislate on artificial intelligence is for us to engage in one of the most complex and important subjects Congress has ever faced," Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said on Tuesday. Others expected to attend the forum OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang among others. This week, Congress is also holding three separate hearings on AI. Lawmakers in the US want safeguards against potentially dangerous deepfakes, election interference and attacks on critical infrastructure. They have been grappling on how to mitigate the dangers of AI. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Archaeologists have expressed anger over the fossilised remains of ancient human relatives being sent to the edge of outer space for the first time. Archaeologists have expressed anger over the fossilised remains of ancient human relatives being sent to the edge of outer space for the first time. According to a report by Live Science early Wednesday (September 13), fragmentary remains of two ancient human relatives, Australopithecus sediba and Homo naledi, were carried aboard a Virgin Galactic flight on September 8. The fossils were chosen by Lee Berger, a National Geographic Society explorer in residence. Berger, who is the director of Deep Human Journey at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, was instrumental in the discovery of both species. The report said that a fragment of the collarbone of Australopithecus sediba was chosen for the trip and a thumb bone from Homo naledi. In a statement, Berger said the journey of these fossils into space represented humankind's appreciation of the contribution of all of humanity's ancestors and their ancient relatives. The issues highlighted over the space flight Sharing posts on X, formerly known as Twitter, biological anthropologist Dr Alessio Veneziano identified four main issues with this space flight- 1) The lack of scientific justification for the flight; 2) Ethical issues surrounding respect for human ancestral remains; 3) Lee Berger's access to fossils; and 4) The misrepresentation of the practice of palaeoanthropology. Two important ancient human relatives packed and ready to go where no extinct hominins have gone before! #neverstopexploring! pic.twitter.com/rngRVQipef — Lee R Berger (@LeeRberger) September 1, 2023 × The Live Science report further said that the space journey had been roundly criticised for lacking a scientific purpose, especially since a malfunction on the mission could have destroyed the priceless specimens. Dr Justin Walsh, a professor of art and archaeology at Chapman University, said that the effects of spaceflight on heritage items had not been an area of scientific study. Dr Walsh said that space archaeologists like him were interested in the effect of the space environment on items in space. "But I don't think we'd use a piece of heritage from here on Earth as a test article to see what happens to it," he added. 'This is not science' Professor Sonia Zakrzewski, a bioarchaeologist at the University of Southhampton, posted on X that she was horrified a permit was granted for the space flight, and said she would use this expedition as an example in her class about unethical approaches. "This is NOT science," Professor Zakrzewski said. Echoing her concerns, Dr Walsh said that the fossilised bones were not just "scientific specimens but the remains of our collective ancestors, we owe them respect." Eighty-two per cent of workers in Asia have a high to moderate mental health risk, which highlights a growing concern about workplace well-being in Asia, a study published on Thursday (September 14) has revealed.

Eighty-two per cent of workers in Asia have a high to moderate mental health risk, which highlights a growing concern about workplace well-being in Asia, a study published on Thursday (September 14) has revealed. The joint study done by AON and TELUS Health explored mental health and its impact on productivity across 12 countries in Asia including India, Japan, Indonesia, South Korea and Singapore. "The insights from the report aim to improve understanding of the mental health risk of employees and help businesses make better decisions to manage employee mental health and increase workforce resilience," the study said. "The strong likelihood of workers developing a mental issue - 30 per cent of those who reported being high-risk and 7 per cent of those with moderate risk - means there is increased risk of lower productivity and financial risk for organisations," the study added. The key findings The key findings of the study said that 45 per cent of respondents across Asia reported their mental health was negatively impacting their work while stress, anxiety and burnout are on the rise. Fifty-one per cent of employees reported feeling more sensitive to stress this year compared to 2022, the study said, adding that 30 per cent of workers were finding it difficult to concentrate on their work. Also, 47 per cent of employees reported ending their day feeling mentally or physically exhausted. The study also said that workers in Asia managing growing work, home and social pressures, the stigma surrounding mental health and the impact of the Covid pandemic contributed to the deterioration of mental health. "54 per cent of employees believe their career options would be limited if their employer knew they had a mental health issue, while 49 per cent said they would worry that friends and family would treat them differently and 49 per cent reported they would feel negatively about themselves," the study further added. The difficulties in accessing mental health support As per the study, 43 per cent of the respondents said that cost was the number one barrier to accessing mental health support. "Lack of information and knowledge of where to get help also ranked high among respondents, with nearly one-third not knowing what type of care they need or where to go," the study said. The respondents also rated stigma in their top four responses when it came to getting access to mental health support. “Organisations that do not implement support structures or choose to dismiss the impact of mental health in their workplace will realise there is a significant cost in doing nothing,” said Tim Dwyer, chief executive officer, of Health Solutions, Asia Pacific, Aon. Meanwhile, Jamie MacLennan, managing director of APAC, TELUS Health, said that far too many people in Asia were dealing with elevated stress, anxiety, isolation and depression which had a direct correlation to workplace productivity.
