A recent study has said that a brain-altering parasite turns ants into "zombies" at dawn and dusk. According to the University of Copenhagen's study published in Science Daily last Sunday (September 17), the liver fluke parasite takes over the brains of ants, causing them to cling to the tops of blades of grass where they can be eaten by cattle and deer.

"The common liver fluke has an exceptional life cycle as it moves through snails, ants and grass-grazing herbivores," the study said. The findings As per the study, liver flukes have a complicated almost insanely conceived life cycle, which begins with the hijacking of the ant's brain. "The unsuspecting ant climbs up and clamps its powerful jaws onto the top of a blade of grass, making it more likely to be eaten by grazers such as cattle and deer," it said. Researchers from the University of Copenhagen's plant and environmental sciences department discovered the parasite's ability to control the ant was even more cunning than previously believed. The parasite can even get the ant to crawl back down the blade of grass when it gets too hot. Associate Professor Brian Fredensborg, who carried out the study, said that getting the ants high up in the grass for when cattle or deer graze during the cool morning and evening hours, and then down again to avoid the sun's deadly rays, is quite smart. The zombie switch The researchers tagged hundreds of ants in the Bidstrup Forests near Roskilde, Denmark. Associate Professor Fredensborg said that colours and numbers were glued into the rear segments of the ants (to keep track of them for a longer period.) The researchers then observed the behaviour of the infected ants in relation to light, humidity, time of day and temperature. "When the temperature was low, the ants were more likely to be attached to the top of a blade of grass. When the temperature rose, the ants relinquished the grass and crawled back down," the study said. "We found a clear correlation between temperature and ant behaviour. We joked about having found the ants' zombie switch," Fredensborg said. As the liver fluke infects the ant, several hundred parasites invade the ant's body. However, only one makes its way to the brain, where it can influence the ant's behaviour, and the rest of the flukes conceal themselves in the ant's abdomen. Zombie ants? Apparently, a parasite can do that by capturing the brains of ants

At UNGA, El Salvador's Bukele Defends Gang Crackdown

El Salvador's Gang Crackdown Faces International Criticism

El Salvador President Nayib Bukele defended his government's crackdown on gangs which has faced international criticism over human rights violations.

Addressing the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Bukele said that if his government listened to external critics, El Salvador would again be the world's murder capital. “The decisions we took were correct. We are no longer the world death capital and we achieved it in record time," Bukele said.

More than 72,000 people were arrested under a state of emergency Bukele requested in March last year following a surge in gang violence.

Critics have said there is no due process and thousands of innocent people have been swept up in the Bukele government's crackdown. Over 7,000 have been released for lack of evidence of gang ties.

China's imports of Japanese seafood fell by over 67 per cent in August over the Fukushima water discharge row. According to a report by NHK World on Monday (September 18), Chinese customs authorities said the value of such imports was $20.4 million. The fall was much sharper than the roughly 30 per cent drop in July, the report added. The Japanese government started releasing treated radioactive water from the Fukushima nuclear plant into the sea last month, sparking international concerns, especially from China which banned all seafood imports from Japan. The Japanese government said that China has been the world's top importer of Japanese seafood. The NHK World report further said that imports of Japanese seafood last year were worth about $590 million. IAEA, Japan agree on continuous safety review of water discharge On Monday, the United Nations (UN) International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Japan signed an agreement setting out the full scope of the agency’s comprehensive and continuous safety review of the discharge of treated water from the Fukushima nuclear plant. "The IAEA has been reviewing the safety of Japan’s plan on how to handle the treated water since it was first announced in 2021 and today’s agreement focuses on the Agency’s long-term activities during the discharge itself," a statement from the IAEA said. The agreement has identified five main areas of the UN Atomic Agency's safety review work, including conducting onsite analysis, protecting people and the environment and sharing key information with the public. The statement also said that these areas would enable the IAEA to check that the relevant international safety standards are constantly applied during the discharge, backed up with real-time and other monitoring data on its website. Elon Musk's brain chip startup Neuralink said on Tuesday (September 19) that it would start the first human trial of its brain implant for paralysis patients. In a statement, Neuralink said it received approval from an independent review board to begin recruitment for the trial.

Musk has grand ambitions for the startup, having said it would facilitate speedy surgical insertions of its chip devices to treat conditions like obesity and autism.

Neuralink said those with paralysis due to cervical spinal cord injury or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis might qualify for the study.

The trial will take about six years to complete but it is not yet known how many participants would be enrolled.

"The PRIME Study (short for Precise Robotically Implanted Brain-Computer Interface) – a groundbreaking investigational medical device trial for our fully-implantable, wireless brain-computer interface (BCI) – aims to evaluate the safety of our implant (N1) and surgical robot (R1) and assess the initial functionality of our BCI for enabling people with paralysis to control external devices with their thoughts," the statement said.

The study would use a robot to surgically place a brain-computer interface (BCI) implant in a region of the brain that controls the intention to move, it said.

The initial goal here is to enable people to control a computer cursor or keyboard using their thoughts alone.

"Once in place, the N1 Implant is cosmetically invisible and is intended to record and transmit brain signals wirelessly to an app that decodes movement intention," the statement added.

Experts have pointed out that even if the BCI device proves to be safe for human use, it would still probably take over a decade for Neuralink to secure commercial use clearance for it.

Australia is currently battling an intense heatwave that has prompted the danger of a bushfire disaster. According to a report by the news agency Reuters on Wednesday (September 20), danger warnings have been issued for the Greater Sydney region, which is home to more than five million people. In its latest update, the NSW Rural Fire Services said over 600 firefighters and emergency personnel were battling to control 68 fires burning across New South Wales (NSW) state as of Wednesday morning. "With hot, dry and windy conditions forecast throughout the day, the Greater Sydney Region ... will experience extreme fire danger, while several other areas will experience high fire danger," the update said. Total fire ban in large swathes of NSW Total fire bans are in place in large swathes of New South Wales. Reuters reported that on Tuesday, residents of a popular holiday town in Tasmania were told to move to a safer location due to an uncontrolled bushfire fuelled by strong wind gusts. Meanwhile, fire crews rushed to conduct hazard-reduction burns in Sydney's west to prepare for the looming bushfire season, which authorities said could be the worst since the 2019-2020 'Black Summer' fires. During this disaster, around 15,000 separate fires burned across Australia, according to a report by the BBC. Greg Mullins, a former fire brigade chief, who repeatedly warned authorities about the Black Summer fires but got no positive response, told the BBC that governments have acted on calls to improve the equipment available to firefighters - the aerial firefighting fleet in particular. However, the report said that fuel management is another story, and one increasingly out of human control. Despite the scale of Black Summer, there are still dense swathes of bushland - for example surrounding the Sydney basin - which were left largely untouched. IAEA, Japan sign agreement on Fukushima water discharge

UN's International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) signed an agreement setting out the full scope of the agency’s comprehensive and continuous safety review of the discharge of treated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant.

The Signatories of the Fukushima Discharge Agreement

The agreement was signed by IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi and Japanese Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

The agreement has identified five key areas of the safety review, including protecting people and the environment, conducting onsite analysis, and sharing key details with the public.

These areas would enable the IAEA to check that international safety standards are constantly applied during the water discharge.

Japan started releasing treated radioactive water from the Fukushima plant in August, sparking international concerns, especially from China which banned all seafood imports from Japan.

Australia will spend $966 million to boost maritime surveillance of its northern approaches, purchasing more long-range drone aircraft and upgrading the Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft. In a statement on Tuesday (September 19), Australia's Minister for Defence Industry Pat Conroy said that the fleet of 14 Boeing Poseidon Maritime Patrol aircraft will have anti-submarine warfare, maritime strike, and intelligence collection capabilities upgraded.

According to a report by the news agency Reuters, the Poseidon aircraft have conducted patrols in the South China Sea, and have also operated out of a Japanese airbase to enforce United Nations Security Council (UNSC) sanctions on North Korea.

Meanwhile, the MQ-4C Triton drone aircraft, which has been developed with the United States Navy, would be based in Australia's Northern Territory, closest to Asia, and operated by a newly formed squadron in South Australia state.

"The purchase of an additional Triton will enhance operations from Australia's northern bases, a priority under the Defence Strategic Review," Minister Conroy said on Tuesday.

A report by ABC News said that as per the latest budget of the US Department of Defense, the Triton programme will be terminated with production ceasing next year. The report said that the halted production will leave the US Navy with 22 aircraft, well short of its earlier target of 70.

On Tuesday, former defence official Marcus Hellyer described the government's decision to persevere with the Triton as strange. Hellyer predicts that the programme will undoubtedly cost more in both acquisition and sustainment than originally forecast.

A recent study has suggested that a mysterious hidden force is generating water on the Moon. The study published in the journal Nature on September 14 says that waves of electrons, arriving indirectly from Earth and the Sun are contributing to the formation of frozen water on the lunar surface. These electrons hit the Moon as it passes in and out of Earth's magnetotail, which the planet leaves behind as it rushes through space.

"We find that the water abundance at lunar mid-latitudes substantially increases in the dusk and dawn magnetosheath when the solar wind flux increases, yet remains nearly constant across the central magnetotail," the study said.

It added that within the magnetotail is a plasma sheet made up of highly charged electrons and ions, pulled from Earth's atmosphere and solar wind radiation from the Sun.

"We suggest that although we have confirmed the importance of the solar wind as a major source of fast water production on the Moon, hitherto unobserved properties of the plasma sheet properties may also play an important role," the study added.

According to a report by Science Alert, planetary scientist Shuai Li from the University of Hawai'i said that when the Moon is outside of the magnetotail, the lunar surface is bombarded with solar wind.

"Inside the magnetotail, there are almost no solar wind protons and water formation was expected to drop to nearly zero," Professor Li added.

However, citing analysis, the report said that this was not the case. Earlier studies pointed towards hydrogen ions from solar winds generating water on the Moon, but it seems this water is still forming when the lunar surface is protected from solar winds, inside the magnetotail.

"In the magnetotail, there may be additional formation processes or new sources of water not directly associated with the implantation of solar wind protons," Li further said.

An insect-sized robot has been developed by the prestigious Cornell University that can lift 22 times its body weight. According to a report by the Cornell Chronicle on Monday (September 18), the robot was developed by materials engineer Robert Shepherd at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, with his PhD student Cameron Aubin and their colleagues.

The robot is just over an inch long and weighs the equivalent of one and a half paper clips. It has been 3D-printed with a flame-resistant resin. The report said that the body contains a pair of separated combustion chambers that lead to the four actuators, which serve as the feet.

Each actuator is a hollow cylinder capped with a piece of silicone rubber, like a drum skin, on the bottom. "When offboard electronics are used to create a spark in the combustion chambers, premixed methane, and oxygen are ignited, the combustion reaction inflates the drum skin, and the robot pops up into the air," the report added.

Being powered by combustion allows this robot to do a lot of things that robots at this scale haven’t been able to do at this point, Cameron Aubin said.

"It’s an incredible jumper for its size. It’s also really fast on the ground. All of that is due to the force density and the power density of these fuel-driven actuators,” Aubin added.

The report said that the actuator design also enables a high degree of control. By turning a knob, the operator can adjust the speed and frequency of sparking, or vary the fuel feed in real-time, triggering a dynamic range of responses.

“Everybody points to these insect-scale robots as being things that could be used for search and rescue, exploration, environmental monitoring, surveillance, navigation in austere environments,” Aubin said.

While the team has yet to create a fully untethered model – the researcher said they were halfway there – the current iteration “absolutely throttles the competition, in terms of their force output.” WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. China has summoned its German ambassador after the country's Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock called Chinese President Xi Jinping a dictator, Berlin has confirmed.

China has summoned its German ambassador after the country's Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock called Chinese President Xi Jinping a dictator, Berlin has confirmed. On September 14, Foreign Minister Baerbock spoke to Fox News where she talked about the ongoing war in Ukraine. "If Putin were to win this war, what sign would that be for other dictators in the world, like Xi, like the Chinese president? So therefore Ukraine has to win this war," Baerbock told the network. Speaking to the news agency AFP, a foreign ministry spokesman in Berlin confirmed that the envoy was summoned to the Chinese foreign ministry last Sunday over Baerbock's remarks. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's view on the remarks is not yet known. 'Strongly dissatisfied': China on Baerbock's remarks On Monday, the Chinese foreign minister said that it was "strongly dissatisfied" with Baerbock's remarks. "(The comments) are extremely absurd and are a serious infringement of China's political dignity and an open political provocation," foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said at a daily news conference. Even though Germany and China are major trade partners, their ties have been affected as some officials in the German government have taken a harder line over issues ranging from human rights to Taiwan. Foreign Minister Baerbock has pushed for a more hawkish line and has called for a tougher stance and greater emphasis on human rights. On being asked about China's protests over her remarks during a visit to New York, Baerbock replied that she had "taken note" of them. Third time China summoned German envoy This was the third time that China summoned Germany's ambassador, AFP reported. In March this year, Beijing summoned the ambassador over German Education Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger's visit to Taiwan, the first cabinet-level German visit to the island in 26 years. In addition to this, Beijing summoned the German envoy following a G7 foreign ministers' statement about Taiwan in August last year, when Germany was holding the presidency of the group.
