The South Korean government has passed laws to protect the rights of school teachers over abuse from the parents of students. According to a report by The Guardian early Friday (September 22), the laws were passed following weeks of protests sparked by a series of teacher suicides that are set to be linked to malicious complaints from parents.

In July, a 23-year-old primary school teacher was found dead at her school in Seoul. The cause of death was apparent suicide after the teacher reportedly expressed anxiety over complaints from parents. This case triggered protests from teachers and since then, other such cases have come to light.

On Thursday, the teacher rights restoration bills - four in number - were passed in the National Assembly. Passage of one of the bills means that teachers will no longer be automatically suspended if they are accused of child abuse. The report said that this bill prohibits school principals from downplaying or concealing activities that may have violated a teacher’s rights.

Appreciating the move, the Korean Teachers and Education Workers Union described the passage of the bills as a first step forward toward normalising public education and guaranteeing teacher authority. However, the Union cautioned that achieving a full might be challenging without sufficient manpower, and budget support among other factors.

The report also said that last month, the government unveiled a set of guidelines to enhance teachers’ rights which also included measures to address abusive complaints.

Teachers have been protesting nationwide for nine weeks, demanding more rights. They say that they are frequently harassed by parents who often maliciously report them for child abuse, to see them removed from their jobs.

Aome teachers were even reported for restraining a violent child, said reports.

The teachers accused parents of exploiting a child welfare law, passed in 2014, according to which teachers accused of child abuse are automatically suspended.

Thousands of people marched across Nigeria on Thursday (September 21) over the mysterious death of Afrobeat star Ilerioluwa Aloba, better known as MohBad. According to a report by the news agency Associated Press, MohBad, 27, died on September 12 in a hospital in Lagos after being admitted for an unknown illness. The Lagos police said his body was exhumed on Thursday in response to complaints about the unclear circumstances surrounding his death.

Protests were held in Lagos on Tuesday to demand justice for the pop star and they quickly spread across the country amid grief and several questions about what caused his death.

As per the report, police said they received complaints about MohBad's death, leading to the setting up of a criminal investigations team to “aggregate all allegations, suspicions, and insinuations from various sources on the death of the singer.”

On Tuesday, Lagos' Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said that those behind the pop star's death will be made to face the law after a thorough investigation. “I also appeal to all friends and fans of the deceased to stay calm and refrain from making inflammatory utterances and reaching prejudicial conclusions on this matter,” Sanwo-Olu said.

“Staying calm and following the process will be our most solemn tribute to the memory of the departed talent,” the governor added.

The death of the young artist has drawn people — and numbers — to his music. In one of his songs titled “Sorry”, the late star spoke about coming from a poor background and his struggles to earn a living through music. In another, “Peace”, he spoke of himself as a “survivor... money chaser — faster than a bullet.”

On X, #justiceformohbad has been trending since MohBad's death. According to a report by BBC, some tributes suggested that MohBad was bullied within the music industry.

Outrage has been particularly directed at Naira Marley, MohBad's former boss. The two had a feud following MohBad splitting up from Marlian Records last year. Marley himself has also called for a thorough investigation into MohBad's death, the report added.

The Japanese government said on Thursday (September 21) that construction workers stole and sold possibly radioactive metal from near the Fukushima nuclear plant. Speaking to the news agency AFP, environment ministry official Kei Osada said that the ministry was informed of the theft by workers from a joint venture conducting the demolition work in late July and was "exchanging information with police."

As per local media, the metals were sold for $6,000. They went missing from a museum being demolished in a special zone around four kilometres from the plant.

Osada said the metal might have been used in the frame of the building. This meant that it was unlikely that these metals were exposed to high levels of radiation when the nuclear accident occurred, the official added. If the radioactivity levels were high, metals from the area must go to an interim storage facility or be properly disposed of. And if the levels were low, the metals could be reused.

However, Osada also said the metals had not been measured for radiation levels. It was also not yet known what volume of metal went missing, where it was now, or if it posed a health risk.

The March 11, 2011, tsunami caused multiple meltdowns at the Fukushima plant. Following extensive decontamination work, numerous areas around the plant have been declared safe for residents. However, radiation levels can still be above normal and the plant is surrounded by a no-go zone.

The family of a North Carolina man has sued technology giant Google for negligence after he died as he drove off a collapsed bridge while following Google Maps directions.

The family of a North Carolina man has sued technology giant Google for negligence after he died as he drove off a collapsed bridge while following Google Maps directions. Citing a lawsuit, a report by the news agency Associated Press early Thursday (September 21) said that Philip Paxson drowned on September 30, 2022, after his Jeep Gladiator plunged into Snow Creek in Hickory. Paxson, a medical salesperson and father of two, was driving home from his daughter's ninth birthday party through an unfamiliar neighbourhood when Google Maps allegedly directed him to cross a bridge that had collapsed nine years prior and was never repaired. Troopers found Paxson's body in his overturned and partially submerged Gladiator truck. They said that there were no barriers or warning signs along the washed-out roadway. What does the lawsuit say? According to the lawsuit, several people had notified Google Maps about the collapse (of the bridge) in the years leading up to Paxson's death and urged Google to update its route information. The lawsuit named several property management companies that it claimed were responsible for the bridge and the adjoining land. The North Carolina State Patrol, meanwhile, said that the bridge was not maintained by local or state officials, and the original developer's company had dissolved. The report said that Tuesday's court filing included email records from another Hickory resident who used the map's “suggest an edit” feature in September 2020 to alert the company that it was directing drivers over the collapsed bridge. A mail from Google in November 2020 confirmed that the company received the resident's report and was reviewing the suggested change. However, the lawsuit said that Google took no further action. Reviewing the lawsuit: Google Speaking to the Associated Press, Google spokesperson José Castañeda said, "We have the deepest sympathies for the Paxson family." Castañeda said that Google was reviewing the lawsuit, and the company's goal is to provide accurate routing information in Maps. Paxson's family is seeking an unspecified amount of compensatory and punitive damages following Philip's death, a report by CBS News said. “Our girls ask how and why their daddy died, and I’m at a loss for words they can understand because, as an adult, I still can’t understand how those responsible for the GPS directions and the bridge could have acted with so little regard for human life,” his wife Alicia Paxson said. In 2020, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee urged Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, during the latter's visit to Kolkata, to consider lifting the ban on the export of Hilsas to India.

However, Hasina said for her country to lift the curbs on the export of Hilsa, which tops the cravings of the fish-loving Bengalis, India should first ensure a fair share of water from the Teesta river of North Bengal to the neighbouring country.

American federal prosecutors have alleged that the operator of a daycare in New York City, where a one-year-old child died after being exposed to fentanyl (at the premises), took steps to cover up her involvement in a drug operation, according to a report by the news agency Associated Press on Monday (September 19).

American federal prosecutors have alleged that the operator of a daycare in New York City, where a one-year-old child died after being exposed to fentanyl (at the premises), took steps to cover up her involvement in a drug operation, according to a report by the news agency Associated Press on Monday (September 19). One-year-old Nicholas Dominici died and three other children were hospitalised from a kilogramme of fentanyl which was found under a nap mat at the daycare. The report said that daycare owner Grei Mendez, and a man who rented a room from her, Carlisto Acevedo Brito, were hit with new federal narcotics conspiracy charges Tuesday. The two had been previously charged in state court with murder of “depraved indifference” in the death of Dominici. Authorities are on the lookout for a third suspect- Mendez’s husband and a cousin to Brito, who fled shortly after learning of the apparent exposure. The investigation As per the report, officials said that they discovered a kilogramme of fentanyl stored on top of playmats used by children who attended the daycare, which operated out of a small apartment in the Bronx. The officials also found multiple devices for mixing the powerful synthetic opioid with other narcotics and pressing it into bricks. Also watch: Fentanyl overdose crisis in USA: An American drug epidemic | Dark World × On Tuesday, Grei Mendez, 36, appeared in Manhattan federal court and denied any knowledge of the drug operation. Mendez's lawyer, meanwhile, said that the allegations were related to her husband’s actions, not hers. The prosecutors' accusation Federal prosecutors accused Mendez of playing a role in the drug distribution ring as well as helping her husband escape. Last Friday, after discovering that the three children in her daycare were not waking up from their nap, the 36-year-old made three calls, including two to her husband, before dialling 911, prosecutors added. Minutes after the calls were made, Mendez's husband was seen entering the apartment, and then whisking at least two full shopping bags out of the building through a back alley, the report said. Brandon Thompson, an assistant US attorney in Manhattan, said that the phone calls along with the apparent deletion of thousands of text messages between Mendez and her husband suggested an effort to cover up the drug operation. Mendez's lawyer denied the allegations of the cover-up and said the woman panicked after finding the sick children and only spoke to her husband for 10 seconds before calling 911. Federal Judge Jennifer Willis sided with the prosecutors and ordered that Mendez would be held in federal custody without bail. Meanwhile, Carlisto Acevedo Brito was charged alongside Mendez for his alleged role in the drug operations. The report further said that both Brito and Mendez face the possibility of life in prison if convicted on the federal charges. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has said that his government is no longer arming war-torn Ukraine as it is focusing on building up its stocks of weapons. Speaking to Polsat news on Wednesday (September 20), Prime Minister Morawiecki said, “We are no longer transferring any weapons to Ukraine because we are now arming ourselves with the most modern weapons.”

Since the beginning of the Russian offensive in Ukraine in February last year, Poland has been one of Ukraine’s staunchest allies. However, Warsaw and Kyiv have fallen out over Ukrainian grain exports after Warsaw extended a ban on them.

Morawiecki's remarks came after the Polish government summoned the Ukrainian ambassador to the foreign ministry to protest against comments made by President Volodymyr Zelensky following Poland's decision to extend the grain ban.

Earlier, President Zelensky told the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) that his government was working to preserve land routes for grain exports. However, he said that the political theatre around grain imports was only helping Russia.

Apart from Poland, Slovakia and Hungary also announced curbs on grain imports from Ukraine last Friday. This comes after the European Commission decided not to extend a ban on sales in five EU states, including Romania and Bulgaria.

Meanwhile, Ukraine's foreign ministry called for calm on the grain dispute. "We urge our Polish friends to put aside their emotions. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has said that his government is no longer arming war-torn Ukraine as it is focusing on building up its stocks of weapons.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has said that his government is no longer arming war-torn Ukraine as it is focusing on building up its stocks of weapons. Speaking to Polsat news on Wednesday (September 20), Prime Minister Morawiecki said, “We are no longer transferring any weapons to Ukraine because we are now arming ourselves with the most modern weapons.” Since the beginning of the Russian offensive in Ukraine in February last year, Poland has been one of Ukraine’s staunchest allies. The Ukrainian side has offered Poland a constructive path to resolve the grain issue," Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko said in a post on Facebook. Nikolenko added that Ukraine's ambassador explained Kyiv's position on the "unacceptability" of the Polish ban and suggested Kyiv's proposals "will become the basis for moving the dialogue into a constructive course." Daycare owner called her husband before calling cops Last Friday, after finding out that the three children in her daycare were not waking up from their nap, Mendez made three calls, including two to her husband, before she called the police, prosecutors said. Minutes after the call was made, Mendez's husband was seen entering the apartment, and then whisking at least two full shopping bags out of the building through a back alley.
