More than a dozen Senate Democrats have called for the resignation of their colleague Bob Menendez (New Jersey Senator) after an indictment was unsealed last week.

More than a dozen Senate Democrats have called for the resignation of their colleague Bob Menendez (New Jersey Senator) after an indictment was unsealed last week. In a statement on Tuesday (September 26), Senator Cory Booker called for Menendez, 69, to step down in the wake of federal corruption charges related to overseas dealings with Egypt. "Stepping down is not an admission of guilt but an acknowledgment that holding public office often demands tremendous sacrifices at great personal cost," the statement said. According to a report by Fox News on Tuesday, around 13 Senate Democrats called for Menendez to step down. Apart from them, several members of the House have also called for the 69-year-old's resignation, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the report added. Earlier, prosecutors charged Menendez and his wife with taking bribes from three New Jersey businessmen. They said that the senator accepted gold bars and hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash in exchange for wielding his influence to aid the Egyptian government and interfere with law enforcement investigations into the three businessmen. Menendez vows to fight bribery charges On Monday, Menendez vowed to fight the corruption charges and denied any wrongdoing. Speaking to reporters, Menendez said, "A cornerstone of the foundation of American democracy and our justice system is the principle that all people are presumed innocent until proven guilty. All people. I ask for nothing more and deserve nothing less. The court of public opinion is no substitute for our revered justice system.” “Instead of waiting for all the facts to be presented, others have rushed to judgment because they see a political opportunity for themselves or those around them. All I humbly ask for in this moment in my colleagues in Congress, the elected leaders, and the advocates of New Jersey that I have worked with for years, as well as each person who calls New Jersey home, is to pause and allow for all the facts to be presented,” he added. New Jersey businessman pleads not guilty to charges Wael Hana, one of the New Jersey businessmen in the case, pleaded not guilty to charges of bribing Menendez. Hana, 40, entered the plea at a hearing before Magistrate Judge Ona Wang in federal court in Manhattan on Tuesday. Prosecutors said Hana, who is originally from Egypt, arranged meetings in 2018 between Menendez and Egyptian officials. At the meetings, officials pressed the senator to sign off on military aid Washington had withheld over concerns about the country's human rights record. The Pakistani government said on Monday (September 25) that it was investigating two local distributors of Swiss pharmaceutical company Roche's Avastin cancer drug after 12 diabetic patients injected with the drug went blind. In a statement, the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) said that health authorities in Punjab province launched a probe into the local use of Avastin.

"Incidents of loss of vision in diabetic patients have been reported following treatment with Altered/Dispensed/Diluted Avastin injection," the DRAP said. Following the incident, the regulator instructed the importer to recall the suspected batches of Avastin 100mg injection, which it said had been created illegally.

"This product is approved by the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) to treat Colorectal and other metastatic carcinomas. The use of this drug product in diabetic retinopathy or other ophthalmic conditions is one of the off-label uses and is not approved by DRAP," the statement added.

The DRAP also said the sale and distribution of the cancer drug's injection had been put on halt till verification of its quality through sampling and laboratory testing to safeguard public health. It asked healthcare professionals, pharmacists and chemists to stop the distribution, dispensing and administration of this product immediately, check their stocks and stop supplying this product.

According to a report by the news agency Reuters, Avastin, when used at much lower doses, is similar to the eye drug Lucentis and is used in many countries as a low-cost option to treat certain blindness-causing conditions.

However, Roche said in a statement that Avastin is not approved for any use in the eye.

Meanwhile, Punjab province's Minister for Specialised Health Javed Akram said the police were questioning two men they believe to be the drug distributors in the state. "A high-level committee has been constituted to probe the issue. A case has been registered against the distributor and his aide," Akram said, Reuters reported.

London's Gatwick Airport said on Monday (September 25) that it cancelled over 160 flights until Sunday (October 1) due to an exceptional shortage of controllers, partly caused by the Covid pandemic.

London's Gatwick Airport said on Monday (September 25) that it cancelled over 160 flights until Sunday (October 1) due to an exceptional shortage of controllers, partly caused by the Covid pandemic. In a statement, Gatwick Airport said that until Sunday, flights will be limited to 800 per day, adding the decision had been taken in agreement with NATS, Britain's air traffic control service. This ceiling "will prevent last-minute cancellations and delays for passengers while NATS work through challenges driven by sickness and staffing constraints", the statement added. The statement also said that around 30 per cent of controllers were unavailable for a variety of medical reasons, including Covid. 'A difficult decision but...' Stewart Wingate, director of London Gatwick, said on Monday that the cancellation of flights was a difficult decision but the action taken meant the airlines could fly reliable flight programmes, which gave passengers more certainty that they would not face last-minute cancellations. Wingate said he received repeated assurances from NATS after temporary air traffic control restrictions were put in place at the airport earlier this month, but the situation was not improving. Meanwhile, a NATS spokesperson told The Guardian, "Given the levels of sickness we have experienced over the last few weeks, we believe it is the responsible thing to do to limit the number of flights this week in order to reduce the risk of daily disruption to passengers using the airport.” The spokesperson added that the air traffic control service was training and recruiting as fast as possible but pointed out that even experienced air traffic controllers take at least nine months to qualify at Gatwick. Indian nationals and students in Canada were also asked to register with the High Commission of India in Ottawa or the Consulates General of India in Toronto and Vancouver through their respective websites or the MADAD portal. The MEA said that this would enable the High Commission and the Consulates General to better connect with Indian citizens in Canada in the event of any emergency or untoward incident. Russia said on Monday (September 25) that its air defence forces shot down a missile over Russian-annexed Crimea. "Our military is repelling a missile attack. According to preliminary data, air defence shot down one missile near the Belbek airfield.

Russia said on Monday (September 25) that its air defence forces shot down a missile over Russian-annexed Crimea. "Our military is repelling a missile attack. According to preliminary data, air defence shot down one missile near the Belbek airfield. Work continues," Moscow-installed governor of Sevastopol Mikhail Razvozhayev said on Telegram. Razvozhayev said that authorities declared an air raid alert across the region at 8.57 pm (1757 GMT). About an hour later, the governor announced the air raid alert was over. Ukraine has targeted Crimea throughout Russia's offensive but attacks on military installations there have recently intensified. Russian air strikes kill 4 in Ukraine; grain facilities damaged The above development comes as Russian air strikes on Monday killed four people in Ukraine and caused significant damage to infrastructure at the Black Sea port of Odesa and to grain storage facilities. Sharing a post on X, Ukraine's Economy Minister Yulia Svyrydenko said, "Another massive attack on Odesa. The attack resulted in the destruction of grain storage facilities and significant damage to the seaport." According to a report by the news agency Reuters early Tuesday, Odesa region Governor Oleh Kiper said the facilities that were hit contained almost 1,000 tonnes of grain and that the bodies of two men were found under the rubble of a warehouse. Separately, Ukrainian officials said that two more people were killed in a separate air strike on the town of Beryslav in the southern Kherson region. Air attacks intensified Monday's air strikes were part of a campaign that has made it harder for major grain producer Ukraine to export its products since Moscow quit a deal in mid-July. Reuters reported that the strikes have intensified as Ukraine presses on with a counteroffensive in the south and east that has made slow gains. However, the counteroffensive can see a boost as President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that the United States delivered Abrams tanks to Ukraine. "Abrams are already in Ukraine and are preparing to reinforce our brigades," Zelensky said in a post on social media. He did not elaborate on how many tanks arrived or how much time would be required to deploy them to the front line. The announcement came just after Ukraine claimed it had killed the commander of Russia's Black Sea fleet in a missile strike on Moscow's naval headquarters in Crimea last week in what would be a major embarrassment for Russia. Hundreds of people have died from dengue fever and acute watery diarrhoea in war-torn Sudan as the conflict rages on. On Monday (September 25), the Sudanese doctors' union warned that the health situation in the state of Gedaref was deteriorating at a horrific rate, with thousands infected with dengue fever. Speaking to the news agency AFP, a medical source from Gedaref who chose to remain anonymous said, "The hospital's beds are all full but the cases keep coming in, particularly children." "But the number of those receiving treatment at home are much more than those at the hospital," the source added. Gedaref resident Amal Hussein, meanwhile, told the news agency that in each home, there were at least three people sick with dengue. Gedaref has been spared the direct effects of the ongoing war between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). However, the state has been impacted by mass displacement and other humanitarian crises. Three dead of acute watery diarrhoea in Khartoum AFP reported on Monday that in Khartoum, three people died of acute watery diarrhoea in the Hajj Youssef district in the east of the capital. The local resistance committee urged people to take precautions to avoid infection. Recently, the United Nations (UN) said that 80 per cent of the hospitals in Sudan have been out of service more than five months into the war. However, even before the conflict started in mid-April, Sudan's healthcare system struggled to contain the annual disease outbreaks that accompany the rainy season (starting in June) including malaria and dengue fever. Meanwhile, over 1,200 children have died in refugee camps since May, due in part to a measles outbreak. The ongoing health crises have compounded the dire humanitarian situation in the country. On Monday, Clementine Nkweta-Salami, the UN's humanitarian representative in Sudan, warned that "disaster is knocking on the door in Sudan." She urged "donors to immediately disburse pledged funds to sustain life-saving humanitarian aid." Sudanese army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan on Thursday (September 21) appealed to the international community to counter "sponsors" of the army's rival Rapid Support Forces (RSF) as the conflict in Sudan rages on.

Sudanese army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan on Thursday (September 21) appealed to the international community to counter "sponsors" of the army's rival Rapid Support Forces (RSF) as the conflict in Sudan rages on. Addressing the United Nations, General al-Burhan said, "We call upon the international community to designate these groups and their allies as terrorist groups that must be countered by all. They must be fought to protect the Sudanese people, the region and the entire world. They are responsible for the killing of thousands and the displacement of millions." 'Knocked on all doors to stop the war' "Despite what has been committed by these groups, and since their attack against the state, we've knocked on all doors to stop this war. We responded to each and every initiative by our friends and brothers," he added. The army chief reiterated his demand that the RSF and their allied militias should be designated as terrorist groups, as they committed all sorts of crimes that give grounds for such designation. Since the beginning of the conflict in Sudan in mid-April, thousands of civilians have been killed and millions of others have been displaced. Both the army and the RSF have blamed each other for starting the war. Fully prepared for ceasefire, political talks: RSF RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti, also addressed the UNGA on Thursday and said that his forces were fully prepared for a ceasefire and comprehensive political talks to end the conflict. In a video message, Hemedti said that the RSF renewed its commitment to the peaceful process to put a halt to this war. "The RSF are fully prepared for a ceasefire throughout Sudan to allow the passage of humanitarian aid ... and to start serious and comprehensive political talks," he added. A US government contractor has been arrested on charges of spying, reportedly for Ethiopia. According to a statement by the US Justice Department on Thursday (September 21), 50-year-old Abraham Teklu Lemma was arrested on August 24 and has been charged with providing national defence information to a foreign government. Lemma is a naturalised US citizen of Ethiopian descent.

"According to the criminal complaint, between on or about Dec. 19, 2022, and Aug. 7, 2023, Lemma copied classified information from intelligence reports and deleted the classification markings from them," the Justice Department statement said.

"Lemma then removed the information, which was classified as SECRET and TOP SECRET, from secure facilities at the Department of State. This material related to a specific country and/or geographic region. Lemma accessed, copied, removed, and retained this information without authorisation," it added.

Charging documents said that Lemma used an encrypted application to transmit classified national defence information to a foreign government official associated with a foreign country’s intelligence service.

In these communications, the 50-year-old expressed an interest and willingness to assist the foreign government official by providing information. In one such communication, the foreign official stated, “[i]t’s time to continue ur support.” Lemma responded, “Roger that!”

The department also said that the classified information that Lemma transferred to the foreign official included satellite imagery and other information regarding military activities in the foreign country and region.

"The two espionage charges carry a potential penalty of death or any term of years up to life in prison, and the willful retention charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. A federal judge will determine any sentence based on the US Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors," it further said.
