The United Auto Workers (UAW) on Friday (Sep 29) expanded its two-week strikes against Detroit automakers, adding 7,000 workers at a Ford plant in Chicago and a General Motors assembly factory near Lansing. Addressing workers through video conference, UAW President Shawn Fain said that negotiations had not broken down, but the strikes were escalated because Ford and GM refused to make meaningful progress in contract talks.

Jeep maker Stellantis was spared from the third round of strikes, a report by the news agency Associated Press said.

“Sadly, despite our willingness to bargain, Ford and GM have refused to make meaningful progress at the table,” Fain told the striking workers, adding that union bargainers were still talking to all three companies, and he’s hopeful they could reach deals.

Stellantis made significant progress: UAW

Stellantis, he said, made significant progress “moments” before the Facebook Live broadcast by agreeing to unspecified cost-of-living pay raises, the right not to cross a picket line, and the right to strike over plant closures. “We are excited about this momentum at Stellantis and hope it continues,” the UAW president said.

In a statement, Stellantis said it was committed to working through these issues "in an expeditious manner to reach a fair and responsible agreement that gets everyone back to work as soon as possible.”

For long, automakers said that they were willing to give raises to workers, but feared that too rich of a contract would drive up the prices of their vehicles, making them higher than those made at non-union American plants run by foreign automakers.

The UAW, meanwhile, has countered that labour costs are only 4% to 5% of the cost of a vehicle, and the companies are making billions in profits and can afford big raises.

New strikes target big money maker vehicles of GM, Ford

The union has vowed to hit automakers harder if it does not receive what it calls substantially improved contract offers as part of an unprecedented, simultaneous labour campaign against all three Detroit automakers.

The UAW went on strike on September 15 and initially targeted one assembly plant from each company. About 25,000, or about 17%, of the union’s 146,000 workers at the three automakers are on strike.

It has structured its walkouts in a way that has allowed the companies to keep making pickup trucks and large SUVs which are their most profitable vehicles. However, the new strikes against GM and Ford target SUVs that have been the big money makers for both companies.

Antarctica is likely warming much faster than the predictions made by climate change models. Citing a study, a report by The Guardian on Thursday (September 7) said that scientists analysed 78 Antarctic ice cores to recreate temperatures going back 1,000 years and found the warming across the continent was outside what could be expected from natural swings.

The scientists analysed these ice cores that hold a record of temperature and then compared those temperatures to climate models and observations. The study found that Antarctica was warming at a rate of between 0.22°C and 0.32°C per decade, compared to 0.18°C per decade predicted by climate models.

Dr Mathieu Casado, the lead author of the study, said scientists found direct evidence that Antarctica was also now undergoing polar amplification. Dr Casado, who works at France's Science du Climat et de l’Environnement, added that it was extremely concerning to see such significant warming in Antarctica, beyond natural variability.

The Guardian reported that in West Antarctica, a region considered particularly vulnerable to warming with an ice sheet that could push up global sea levels by several metres if it collapsed, warming could be at twice the rate suggested by climate models.

Dr Sarah Jackson of the Australian National University, who was not part of the study, described the findings as deeply concerning and said, “All our projections for future sea level rise use these low rates of warming. Our models might be underestimating the loss of ice that we might get."

Meanwhile, Dr Danielle Udy from the University of Tasmania, who was also not involved in the study, said the research was timely “given the extreme events we have been seeing in Antarctica.”

Burkina Faso's military junta leader Captain Ibrahim Traore said on Friday (Sep 29) that the promised elections will only be held in the country once the security situation permits.

Burkina Faso's military junta leader Captain Ibrahim Traore said on Friday (Sep 29) that the promised elections will only be held in the country once the security situation permits. In an interview, Captain Traore was asked, "Are you saying that as long as there is no security, there will be no elections?" Replying to this question, he said, "No, there won't be an election concentrated solely in Ouagadougou, Bougouriba and a few surrounding towns. All Burkinabes must choose their president. Those who are going to apply must be able to go anywhere in Burkina, for the people of Burkina. That's it, go and campaign and all that." He highlighted that the junta has to ensure security first, adding that the junta took over the country for security so that citizens could live with dignity and peace of mind. "And once (security) that's assured, people will be able to move around freely, go where they want, do their campaigning. And then, allow all the people of Burkina Faso to choose their president. That's what we want,” Traore added. Junta supporters mark first anniversary of coup Ibrahim Traore's remarks came as hundreds of supporters of the military junta marked the first anniversary of the coup on Friday. Traore took power on Sept. 30 last year, ousting the leader of another coup who had seized power eight months earlier. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, supporters gathered at the Place de la Nation waving Burkinabe flags. Some held signs with pictures of Traore. The rebellions were welcomed by many citizens fed up with worsening insecurity and disillusioned by their government. A few days back, the military junta said it had thwarted a coup attempt against it, and that investigations were underway to determine who was behind the plot. A Palestinian activist and fighter of the Hamas movement was killed by Israeli troops in West Bank on Friday (Sep 30). In a statement, the Palestinian health ministry said, "Mohammad Jibril Roummaneh died as a result of serious injuries caused by bullets fired by the occupying forces in El-Bireh northeast of Ramallah." The ministry said a second Palestinian was injured but did not elaborate. The Israeli army, meanwhile, said that assailants hurled Molotov cocktails at a military post adjacent to the Psagot, next to El-Bireh. "Soldiers... identified the suspects and responded with live fire," the army said, adding two assailants were neutralised and transferred to receive medical treatment. 'A heroic martyr,' say Hamas In a statement, the Hamas called Roummaneh as one of its members who fell as a "heroic martyr" while "defending the freedom of (his) people" near Psagot. The statement was accompanied by an image of a very young man. At least 242 Palestinians, 32 Israelis, a Ukrainian, and an Italian have been killed since the beginning of the year in violence linked to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Israel has occupied the West Bank -- now home to some three million Palestinians -- since the Six-Day War of 1967. Excluding annexed east Jerusalem, the territory is now home to around 490,000 Israelis who live in settlements that are considered illegal under international law. Two Palestinians killed in raid in West Bank Nearly a week back, Israeli troops killed two Palestinians in a raid in the West Bank. As per the Palestinian health ministry, the two victims were killed by live Israeli bullets to the head. The ministry identified the victims as Osaid Abu Ali, 21, and Abd al-Rahman Abu Daghash, 32. Hamas said that Osaid Abu Ali was one of its fighters. Last Sunday, crowds of mourners attended the funeral of the two Palestinians. Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed the country on Saturday (Sep 30) on the first anniversary of parts of four Ukrainian regions - Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia - being incorporated into Russia. In a televised address, President Putin said, "A year ago a decisive, historic and fateful event happened. Agreements of four new regions of the Federation joining Russia were signed. Millions of people of Donbas, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions made their choice - to be with their fatherland."

“This conscious, long-awaited, hard-won and truly popular decision people took together, at the referendums that were held in full compliance with international regulations,” Putin said and declared September 30 as "Reunification Day".

He added that the choice (of parts of these four regions) to join Russia was reinforced by local elections staged this month that returned officials supporting Moscow's annexation.

“I want to specially address the people of Donetsk People's Republic, Luhansk People's Republic, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions. I thank you for saving and passing to your children the love for the fatherland, despite all these tests. Thanks to you, your firmness and determination, Russia has become even more stronger," Putin further said.

Ukraine has described the annexation as temporarily occupied and says that the parts of the four regions will be liberated. It said the votes in Russian-controlled Ukraine were unlawful and part of an effort by the Kremlin to justify its attempted annexation of the land.

India's Foreign Minister S Jaishankar, who will be concluding his visit to the United States, on Friday (Sep 29) spoke about the ongoing diplomatic standoff between India and Canada over the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Addressing a press conference in Washington DC, Foreign Minister Jaishankar said, "Well, I don't know if I would use the term deadlock..." "The issue is as follows: The Canadians have made some allegations. We have pointed out to them that this is not the Government of India's policy and if they are prepared to share with us specifics and anything relevant, we are also open to looking at it," Jaishankar added. Jaishankar highlights ongoing problem with Canada Jaishankar pointed out that the ongoing problem with Ottawa evolves around the permissiveness regarding terrorism, extremism, and violence in Canada. Also read: Jaishankar says Canada's attitude towards terrorists, extremists 'very permissive' "This permissiveness is also reflected in the fact that some important extradition requests have not been responded to from their side in the fact that there are individuals and organisations who are clearly involved with violence and illegal activities in India, who themselves declared," he said. #WATCH | Washington, DC: On India-Canada row, EAM Dr S Jaishankar says, "...Our point is that there is today a climate of violence, an atmosphere of intimidation...Just just think about it. We have had smoke bombs thrown at the mission. We've had our consulates, violence in front… pic.twitter.com/QCYLlaMPCr — ANI (@ANI) September 29, 2023 × "I mean it is not a secret. They continue to carry on with their activities in Canada and most important, the fact that our diplomatic missions and our diplomatic personnel have been consistently and continuously intimidated in Canada," the Indian foreign minister added. Jaishankar also mentioned the recent incidents of smoke bombs thrown at Indian missions in Canada along with violence in front of consulates. "Individuals have been targeted and intimidated. There are posters put up about people. So tell me, do you consider this normal?... If this had happened to any other country, how would they react to it?... Let's not normalize what is happening in Canada," he said. Raised Nijjar's murder with New Delhi: Blinken Jaishankar's press conference comes hours after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said he raised the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar with the Indian foreign minister in a meeting on Thursday. "We're very concerned about the allegations that have been raised by Canada, by Prime Minister (Justin) Trudeau. We have been in close contact with Canada about that, and at the same time, we have engaged with the Indian government and urge them to work with Canada on an investigation. And I had the opportunity to do so again in my meeting yesterday with Foreign Minister (Subrahmanyam) Jaishankar," Blinken said in a press conference. "Those responsible need to be held accountable and we hope that our friends in both Canada and India will work together to resolve this matter,” he added. Earlier, neither Blinken nor the US State Department made any mention of raising the murder of Nijjar during Thursday's meeting with Jaishankar. A statement issued by the State Department on Thursday said that Jaishankar and Blinken held talks on a range of issues including the recently concluded G20 Summit in New Delhi and the creation of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor. But nowhere, did the statement explicitly mention the two leaders talking about Nijjar's murder. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Billionaire Elon Musk paid a visit to the Texas-Mexico border on Thursday (Sep 28) and met with local politicians and law enforcement officers. His wading into the US immigration debate comes as thousands of migrants have ventured to northern Mexico in recent days and then crossed the US border into Texas. Dressed in a black T-shirt, black cowboy hat, and aviator-style sunglasses, Musk visited the Eagle Pass, where throngs of migrants have for several days been wading across the Rio Grande near a railroad bridge near the city. Musk described his visit as an "unfiltered" view of the situation. Musk calls himself extremely pro-immigrant "So, you know, I think we want to, I think we want to do both things; smooth out legal immigration and then stop, you know, sort of a flow, a flow of people that is of such magnitude that is actually leading to a collapse of social services where even America's largest city, New York, is buckling under the pressure of just how many illegal immigrants are going to New York. If New York can’t handle it, well, pretty much no part of the country can," Musk said. Musk, who is a native of South Africa, noted his status as an "immigrant to the United States" and called himself "extremely pro-immigrant." He called for an "expedited legal approval" as part of a "greatly expanded legal immigration system" that welcomes "hard-working and honest" migrants, while also barring entry for those who are "breaking the law." "I'm extremely pro-immigrant, and I believe that we need a greatly expanded legal immigration system and that we should let anyone in the country who is hardworking and honest and will be a contributor to the United States, we should have expedited legal approval for anyone who sort of falls in that category. But then, by the same token, we should also not be allowing people in the country if they're breaking the law. That doesn't make sense. The law is there for a reason," he added. Migrants trying to reach US from Mexico intercepted by officials Also on Thursday, a group of migrants trying to reach the US from Mexico were intercepted by border officials after they arrived on shore. Drone footage showed migrants crossing the border river. Speaking to the news agency Reuters, an unidentified Venezuelan migrant said, "From Colombia to Peru. From Peru to Chile, Bolivia, Ecuador, any place. Those countries too are falling apart. When he (my son) was two months I went back to Venezuela and then I came here." Officials have reported that with groups of migrants as large as 2,000 attempting to cross into the US, Border Patrol is actively engaged in trying to manage the influx. Last week, Texas officials signed an emergency declaration to seek funding for additional services. House Republicans on Thursday (Sep 28) launched an impeachment inquiry hearings into US President Joe Biden based on unproven allegations that he lied about his son Hunter’s business dealings.

House Republicans on Thursday (Sep 28) launched an impeachment inquiry hearings into US President Joe Biden based on unproven allegations that he lied about his son Hunter’s business dealings. The inquiry of Biden detailed foreign payments to his family, but no evidence was provided that he had personally benefitted. The initial impeachment hearing by the House of Representatives Oversight Committee served as a review of evidence that Republicans have gathered so far about foreign business ventures by Hunter, which they said showed that Biden family members were selling access, the news agency Reuters reported. 'Biden profited from policies he pursued as vice prez' "The American people demand accountability for this culture of corruption," House Oversight Committee chair James Comer said, adding that the president lied about family members' business dealings and had not walled them off from his official duties. Republican party leaders alleged that Biden and his family profited from policies he pursued as vice president during Barack Obama's administration between 2009 and 2017. Also on Thursday, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer said that he had issued subpoenas for bank records belonging to Hunter and the president's brother, Frank, as part of an investigation into the family's financial dealings. 'No proof Biden engaged in improper behaviour': Democrats On Thursday, Democrats and several other witnesses said that there was no evidence that Biden received any foreign payments, or engaged in improper behaviour while he served as vice president. Jamie Raskin, the panel's top Democrat, said, "If Republicans had a smoking gun or even a dripping water pistol they would be presenting it today. But they've got nothing." According to Reuters, it is unclear if House Republicans would have votes at the end of the inquiry to support actual impeachment. Even if the vote succeeds, it is highly unlikely that the Senate would vote to remove Biden from the president's post. In Arizona, Biden launches personal attack on Trump As the impeachment inquiry was launched, Biden launched a personal attack on former US president Donald Trump, accusing him of plotting to subvert the US Constitution if he wins a return to power next year. Addressing a speech in Arizona, Biden said that Trump was driven by "vengeance and vindictiveness", and he urged Americans to stand up for democracy before it was too late. Federal Communications Commission Chair Jessica Rosenworcel said on Thursday the agency's proposal to reinstate net neutrality rules could give it new authority to force the removal of equipment from China-based Huawei and ZTE from US networks, including data centers.

The 129-page proposal asks for public input if new rules designed to bar internet service providers from blocking or throttling traffic or offering paid fast lanes would give the FCC "more robust authority to require more entities to remove and replace covered Huawei and ZTE communications equipment and services."

It also asks if the authority would allow it to prohibit Chinese equipment in any network infrastructure used to route or transmit communications, including data centers and internet exchange facilities.

Huawei and ZTE did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The FCC in November banned approvals of new telecommunications equipment from Huawei and ZTE, saying they posed "an unacceptable risk" to U.S. national security.

In September 2022, the FCC named Chinese telecom companies Pacific Networks and China Unicom (Americas) as threats to US national security under a 2019 law aimed at protecting communications networks.

It previously revoked or denied authority to Chinese telecom companies to provide to operate telecommunications in the United States.

The FCC said the net neutrality rules would enhance the agency's "ability to protect the nation’s communications networks from entities that pose threats to national security."

Rosenworcel said existing "authority does not cover broadband. This is a national security loophole that needs to be addressed."

The proposal faces an initial Oct. 19 vote and also asks if the FCC could prohibit internet service providers from entering into traffic exchange arrangements with some companies on national security grounds.

The Chinese embassy in Washington said previously the FCC "abused state power and maliciously attacked Chinese telecom operators again without factual basis." Huawei has repeatedly denied allegations of wrongdoing and said the US government has "unlawfully and irrationally" targeted the company.

Washington's efforts to counter the Chinese tech giants come amid US fears that Beijing could use them to spy on Americans. Washington has for years pressured US allies not to use Huawei or ZTE equipment from 5G networks or remove gear from existing networks.

The FCC designated Huawei and ZTE as threats, requiring US carriers to remove their gear or be frozen out of an $8.3 billion government fund to purchase new equipment. However, to fund the so-called "rip and replace" effort, Congress only appropriated $1.9 billion.

Seven soldiers were killed in Niger on Thursday (Sep 28) in an attack by suspected jihadists, and five others died in a traffic accident while trying to respond to the assault. In a statement, Defence Minister Salifou Mody said that a military unit was attacked by several hundred terrorists in Kandadji.

"During an intervention" launched in response to the attack, "a tragic traffic accident led to the loss of five of our brave soldiers", Defence Minister Mody said.

Another seven people were injured and evacuated to a hospital, he added.

The defence minister also said the motorcycles and weapons of the terrorists were destroyed about 20 kilometres northeast of Ayorou in the same region.

"A search and sweep operation is now underway in order to track down the enemy," he further said in the statement.

Another seven people were injured and evacuated to a hospital, he added. The defence minister also said the motorcycles and weapons of the terrorists were destroyed about 20 kilometres northeast of Ayorou in the same region. Niger: 12 soldiers dead following attack by suspected jihadists

The US on Thursday (Sep 28) imposed sanctions on two companies and one individual over exacerbating the instability in Sudan as the conflict rages on. The Treasury Department's Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, Brian Nelson, said that this action held accountable those who had undercut efforts to find a peaceful, democratic solution in Sudan.

“We will continue to target actors perpetuating this conflict for personal gain,” the statement added. Who has been targeted? The sanctions target Sudan's former foreign minister Ali Karti, GSK Advance Company Ltd and Aviatrade LLC. As per the Treasury Department, following the fall of the al-Bashir regime, Karti was selected as leader of the Sudanese Islamic Movement (SIM) and led efforts to derail Sudan’s progress toward a full democratic transition, including by undermining the former civilian-led transitional government and the Framework Political Agreement process, which contributed to the outbreak of the conflict between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). "He and other hardline Sudanese Islamists are actively obstructing efforts to reach a ceasefire to end the current war between the SAF and RSF and opposing Sudanese civilians’ efforts to restore Sudan’s democratic transition," the department said. The former foreign minister was responsible for or complicit in, or having directly or indirectly engaged or attempted to engage in actions or policies that threatened the country's peace and stability. GSK had been used as a procurement channel for the RSF. The Treasury Department said on Thursday that as of late 2020, GSK worked with Aviatrade to arrange the procurement of parts and supplies, as well as training, for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) previously purchased by the RSF. "As of mid-2023, the RSF used GSK to facilitate additional purchases from Aviatrade LLC, including monitoring equipment and spare parts. Purchases between GSK and Aviatrade LLC were likely directed by senior leaders within the RSF," the department said. The implications With Thursday's actions, all property and interests in the property of Karti, GSK and Aviatrade that are in the United States or in the possession or control of US persons must be blocked and reported to the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). In addition, persons who engage in certain transactions with the persons designated today may themselves be exposed to sanctions or subject to an enforcement action, the department said. It added that financial institutions and other persons that engaged in certain transactions or activities with the sanctioned entities and individuals may expose themselves to sanctions or be subject to an enforcement action. Sudan conflict: US imposes sanctions on two companies, former minister over instability

India's Foreign Minister S Jaishankar met the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Washington DC on Thursday (Sep 28) amid the diplomatic standoff between India and Canada over the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

India's Foreign Minister S Jaishankar met the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Washington DC on Thursday (Sep 28) amid the diplomatic standoff between India and Canada over the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. But interestingly, the issue did not figure publicly in the meeting. Speaking to reporters, Blinken said that he and Jaishankar have had very good discussions at the recently-concluded G20 Summit in New Delhi and the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. "Good to be back here (in the US). We of course had Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) here this summer. We thank the US for all the support at the G20 Summit. And I actually look forward to seeing you (Blinken) in New Delhi," Jaishankar said. #WATCH | Washington, DC: EAM Dr S Jaishankar meets US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. pic.twitter.com/HC7LCUkRSD — ANI (@ANI) September 28, 2023 × The two leaders did not say anything about the row between India and Canada over Nijjar's killing. "Is Canada impacting your relationship?," a reporter present at the press conference asked Blinken, but the question went unanswered. Trudeau was 'sure' that Blinken would raise Nijjar's murder with India Earlier on Thursday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had said he was sure that Blinken would raise Nijjar's murder during his meeting with Jaishankar. "The Americans will certainly discuss this matter with the Indian government," Trudeau told reporters. Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was labelled a terrorist by New Delhi in 2020, was killed by two identified men in British Columbia in June. Trudeau, earlier this month, told Canadian Parliament that his government had "credible allegations" that Indian government agents may be linked to the killing, prompting an angry reaction from the New Delhi, which dismissed Ottawa's allegation as absurd. Have consistently engaged with India over murder row: US Amid the standoff between India and Canada over the murder of Nijjar, US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller said on Thursday that Washington consistently engaged with New Delhi on this question and has urged them to cooperate. #WATCH | On the India-Canada row, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller says, "One of the practices I'm going to continue to try to adhere to, is to not speak publicly about what, Secretary Blinken or other representative of this department will say in their meetings… pic.twitter.com/CbYitCmLqS — ANI (@ANI) September 28, 2023 × "And that engagement and the urge for them to cooperate will continue," Miller told reporters.
