UN's International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) signed an agreement setting out the full scope of the agency’s comprehensive and continuous safety review of the discharge of treated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant.
The agreement was signed by IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi and Japanese Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
The agreement has identified five key areas of the safety review, including protecting people and the environment, conducting onsite analysis, and sharing key details with the public.
These areas would enable the IAEA to check that international safety standards are constantly applied during the water discharge.
Japan started releasing treated radioactive water from the Fukushima plant in August, sparking international concerns, especially from China which banned all seafood imports from Japan.
