Two people were killed and as many injured after a fire rescue helicopter crashed into an apartment building in Pompano Beach, Florida, on Monday morning (Aug 28).

Three people were on board the helicopter, of which one person died, while another person died on the ground. It was a woman.

The dead woman’s name was not released as her family was being notified.

The deceased on board the helicopter has been identified as Broward Sheriff's Office Captain Terryson Jackson (50), National Transportation Safety Board said.

He served the organisation for 19 years.

The crash was reported just after 8.45 am (local time) in the area of North Dixie Highway and Atlantic Boulevard.

According to reports, the helicopter was headed to a scene in North Lauderdale at the time of the crash.

Local reports said that the three-member crew was heading to an emergency medical rescue to take the patient to the hospital.

A clip that went viral purportedly shows flames coming from the midsection of the helicopter as it is trailed by a long plume of smoke.

The helicopter then appears to break in half as it begins to spiral, plunging to the ground.

A witness, Brian Piggott, told the Sun Sentinel newspaper that the smoke began to come off from the helicopter as soon as it took off. It then lost altitude and crashed.

The cause of the accident is being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board.

Defying the orders of the Niger military junta, French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday (Aug 28) announced that the country’s ambassador would continue to stay in the crisis-hit capital Niamey.

Dismissing concerns that not adhering to the junta’s orders could be dangerous, Macron said that they can withstand pressure.

“France and its diplomats have faced particularly difficult situations in some countries in recent months, from Sudan, where France has been exemplary, to Niger at this very moment and I applaud your colleague and your colleagues who are listening from their posts,” he said, according to AFP news agency.

“Our policy is the right one. It depends on the courage of President Mohamed Bazoum, the commitment of our diplomats, of our ambassador on the ground who is remaining despite pressure,” Macron told a gathering of French ambassadors in Paris.

There has been a surge of anti-French sentiment in Niger, which was once its colony, ever since the coup toppled the civilian government. It has been reported that the putschists have been taking the help of Wagner mercenary forces to reinforce their rule.

<h2>Niger-France in fresh diplomatic stand-off</h2>

The response from Macron came days after Niger asked French Ambassador Sylvain Itte to leave the country within 48 hours, accusing him of ignoring an invitation for a meeting with the ministry.

They also cited “actions of the French government contrary to the interests of Niger” while giving the ultimatum.

Macron also reiterated France’s support to Niger’s overthrown President Mohamed Bazoum, and extended support to any military action by The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Niger.

The French president also brushed aside junta leaders’ allegations who have blamed much of Niger’s problems on its former colonial ruler.

“This wildfire is the largest in the EU since 2000, when the European Forest Fire Information System (Effis) began recording data,” the EU’s civil protection service said on Tuesday (Aug 29).

The forest fires, which began on August 19, have burned more than 310 sq miles (810 sq km) – an area bigger than New York City, it said.&nbsp;

At least 20 people have lost their lives, 18 of them are migrants whose bodies were found in a region that is often used as an entry point from neighbouring Turkey.

Greece’s fire service told AFP news agency that the blaze was “still out of control” in the north-east region’s Dadia National Park, which is a vital sanctuary for birds of prey.

European Commission spokesperson Balazs Ujvari has said that the bloc has mobilised almost half of its firefighting air wing to help tackle the raging forest fires, which began on August 19.

<h2>EU mobilising water-dumping planes, firefighters&nbsp;</h2>

Eleven planes, one helicopter, and 407 firefighters from the EU fleet have been dispatched to help Greece counter the fire raging in the Dadia National Park, the EU spokesman said.

The EU has called on a fleet of 28 aircraft, 24 water-dumping planes and four helicopters, supplied by member countries to help battle blazes in the bloc and in neighbouring territories.

A lioness was spotted casually strolling on the streets of Karachi city near a residential apartment in Pakistan on Tuesday, causing panic among local residents.

A video circulating on social media showed people running for cover upon spotting the mammoth feline in Shahrea Faisal area near Aisha Bawany College.

Another video showed the predator attacking a man, who, fortunately, remained unhurt. The clip further showed the big cat attacking other bystanders.&nbsp;

According to the police, the lioness was in fact a pet and had escaped out of its cage while being taken in a loader vehicle for medical treatment.&nbsp;

After reports of the loose lioness emerged, &nbsp;the wildlife department rushed to the scene while the police also arrived with a heavy contingent.

The authorities faced difficulties while trying to capture the big cat, as it kept on running from them. At one time, it hid under the basement of a commercial building. It took more than an hour for the authorities to tame the lioness and get it back inside the cage and hand it over to the wildlife department.&nbsp;

The police have booked the owner of the pet lion, and the wildlife department intends to take legal action against the resident.&nbsp;

“If the wildlife department intends to pursue legal action against the owner, Shams, and three other people [involved in the matter], a case would be registered against them,” South Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sheraz Nazir told Dawn.com.

Meanwhile, Interim Sindh Chief Minister retired Justice Maqbool Baqar took cognizance of the incident and sought a report from the wildlife department on lions being kept as a pet in urban areas.

<h2>Not the first time&nbsp;</h2>

Tuesday's incident has thrown light on the practice of people in Pakistan keeping exotic animals as pets.

Earlier this year, a similar incident took place in Islamabad’s Defence Housing Authority when a leopard ran amok in the area. It was later captured by the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board and Capital Development Authority after more than five hours. Three people were hurt during the episode.

There have been reports that people in posh colonies have been keeping wild animals as pets, such as leopards, lions and tigers, as it symbolises wealth and power.

Watch: Lioness on loose in Pakistan streets causes panic 

Donald Trump is “corrupt” and “dishonest”, and Joe Biden is “old” and “confused”.&nbsp;These were the words used by most American respondents in a new poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research when asked to describe the top Democrat&nbsp;and Republican candidates for the next year’s election.

The new poll indicated that neither Trump nor Biden were among the top choices for the voters. The survey showed that around 62 per cent of Americans had an unfavourable opinion of Trump, while 52 per cent of Biden.

A majority of US adults, both Democrat&nbsp;and Republican supporters, mentioned Biden’s age when asked what they thought about the US president. They also expressed concerns about his ability to continue as president. Biden is 80-years-old, just three years older than Trump.

The views weren’t positive for Trump either, who has been indicted in four cases, including the election subversion case and hush money case.

<h2>'Crooked' Trump and 'outdated' Biden</h2>

Words such as “corrupt” and “crooked” figured prominently when they talked about the former president.

Other words elicited by people for Trump include “bad”, “liar” and “dishonest” (8%).

Only 8 per cent of the surveyors responded with positive comments like “good”.

For Biden, 26 per cent of respondents used words like “old” or “outdated” to describe him, while 15 per cent mentioned “slow” and “confused.”

Another 10 per cent gave generally negative comments about the president, and 6% used words like “corrupt” and “crooked.”

When looking at the positive comments made about Biden, only 6 per cent spoke words like “president” and “leader,” and 5 per cent used “strong” and “capable”.

The results suggested that top contenders to run for the White House didn’t find many takers among the voters.

<h2>'Won't vote for either'</h2>

Rami Marsha, a 58-year-old CEO of a manufacturing company in Agoura Hills, California, is a registered Democrat who voted for Trump in 2016 and for Biden in 2020.

He told the AP news agency that he would leave the presidential race portion of his ballot blank if those two squared off again in 2024.

“I think he might be having some dementia, and I don’t think he has the power to run the country,” Marsha said of Biden. But he was equally blunt about Trump: “I’ve had enough of him.”

The poll shows that only 24 per cent of Americans overall want to see Biden run again, while 30 per cent say the same about Trump. A majority of them say they are reluctant to support them if they are nominated again.

These were the words used by most American respondents in a new poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research when asked to describe the top Democrat and Republican candidates for the next year’s election.

A majority of US adults, both Democrat and Republican supporters, mentioned Biden’s age when asked what they thought about the US president. They also expressed concerns about his ability to continue as president. Biden is 80-years-old, just three years older than Trump. The views weren’t positive for Trump either, who has been indicted in four cases, including the election subversion case and hush money case. 'Crooked' Trump and 'outdated' Biden Words such as “corrupt” and “crooked” figured prominently when they talked about the former president. Other words elicited by people for Trump include “bad”, “liar” and “dishonest” (8%). Only 8 per cent of the surveyors responded with positive comments like “good”. Not only Sulphur, but the LIBS instrument also found the presence of aluminium&nbsp;(Al), calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), chromium (Cr), and titanium (Ti) on the lunar surface.&nbsp;

"Further measurements have revealed the presence of manganese (Mn), silicon (Si), and oxygen (O)," it said.

The rover is now conducting experiments to find the presence of hydrogen, ISRO said.

LIBS is a scientific technique that analyses the composition of materials by exposing them to intense laser pulses. A high-energy laser pulse is focused onto the surface of a material, such as a rock or soil. The laser pulse generates an extremely hot and localised plasma.&nbsp;

The collected plasma light is spectrally resolved and detected by detectors such as Charge Coupled Devices. Since each element emits a characteristic set of wavelengths of light when it's in a plasma state, the elemental composition of the material is determined.

<h2>Other discoveries made by Pragyan rover</h2>

India's Chandrayaan-3, since its successful landing on the Moon on August 23, has been making several ground-breaking discoveries. Apart from stumbling upon giant craters in the south polar region, the Pragyan rover has also found massive temperature variations on the lunar surface.

During its observation of lunar top soil, the rover's ChaSTE (Chandra's Surface Thermophysical Experiment) instrument found that the temperature on the surface of the Moon was around 50 degrees Celsius, and it increased to over 60 degrees at the height of 20mm. At minus 80mm depth, which is below the ground, the temperature dropped&nbsp;to minus 10 degrees Celsius.

The ChaSTE measures the temperature profile of the lunar topsoil around the pole&nbsp;to understand the thermal behaviour of the moon's surface. It has a temperature probe equipped with a controlled penetration mechanism capable of reaching a depth of 10 cm beneath the surface. The probe is fitted with 10 individual temperature sensors

Chandrayaan-3 mission: Pragyan rover finds sulphur on Moon's south pole region, hunt on for hydrogen

Russian intelligence chief Gen. Andrey Averyanov, who is notorious for eliminating Vladimir Putin's dissidents, is expected to take over Wagner mercenary group's African operations following Yevgeny Prigozhin's death in a plane crash, Wall Street Journal newspaper reported.

Notably, Averyanov, who is head of the Covert Operations Unit in the GRU, was in Africa in July during a Russia-Africa summit and met several African leaders. The summit was also Prigozhin's first public appearance following his failed mutiny against Russian President Putin.

Currently, no top members of the Wagner group are alive. Those who lost their lives in last week's crash, apart from Prigozhin, include second-in-command Dmitry Utkin and Wagner's non-military logistics chief, Valery Chekalov.

It is unknown what caused the plane to crash, but several unconfirmed reports claim that Prigozhin was assassinated on the orders of Putin in retaliation for Prigozhin’s rebellion against the Moscow government this June.&nbsp;

Over the weekend, Russian officials stated that a DNA analysis confirmed that Prigozhin was among the deceased.

The&nbsp;GRU Unit 29155, which is headed by Averyanov, has reportedly carried out several foreign operations ordered by Putin and has been linked to many assassinations, including the Salisbury poisonings in March 2018.

<h2>Wagner under new leader</h2>

Kremlin had been looking to replace Prigozhin after the latter's brief mutiny was thwarted. In July, it was reported that President Vladimir Putin had proposed Andrei Troshev's name to take over Wagner.

Troshev, who is also known as "Sedoi" or "Grey Hair", is a retired colonel and is one of the founding members and the executive director of the Wagner group. &nbsp;&nbsp;

His name cropped up during a meeting held by Putin five days after the failed rebellion, which was also attended by Prigozhin and several dozen senior Wagner combatants.

Russian intelligence chief to take over Wagner's Africa operations: Report

India's foreign minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday (Aug 29) called out China's "absurd claims" for showing Indian territories as theirs in the new so-called "standard maps" issued by Beijing.

Speaking at a conclave in the capital New Delhi city, Jaishankar said that it was an "old habit" of China to put out maps claiming territories that don't belong to them, and added that the Modi government is very serious about the issue.

"China has put out maps with territories not theirs. Old habit. Putting out maps with parts in India doesn't change anything. Our government is very clear about territory. Making absurd claims does not make other people's territories yours," Jaishankar told NDTV channel.

The "standard maps" 2023 edition was issued by Beijing on Monday (Aug 28) which showed certain Indian areas, like Arunachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Aksai Chin region as part of China.

It also laid claim to Taiwan and some regions of the disputed South China Sea. Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Brunei have all claims over the latter.

Notably, this is not the first time that China has put out maps showing Indian territories as its own. And each time, the Indian government has strongly retorted to their illegal claims.&nbsp;

New Delhi has repeatedly told Beijing that "Arunachal Pradesh was, is, and will always remain an integral and inalienable part of India".

In April this year, China renamed 11 places in Arunachal Pradesh, referring to them as "Zangnan, the southern part of Tibet".

'Absurd claims': India's foreign minister Jaishankar slams China over new map

Russian President Vladimir Putin held a telephone conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and discussed developing bilateral cooperation in the space sector, the expansion of BRICS membership, and the upcoming G20 Summit that will take place in the capital New Delhi in September, an official statement from India Ministry of External Affairs said on Monday (Aug 28).

During the phone call, the two leaders discussed the results of the 15th BRICS Summit in Johannesburg.

“The two leaders reviewed progress on a number of issues of bilateral cooperation and exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual concern, including the recently concluded BRICS Summit in Johannesburg," the statement said.

<h2>Modi thanks Putin for supporting India's presidency&nbsp;&nbsp;</h2>

Putin also told Modi that he would be unable to attend the G20 Summit in New Delhi on 9-10 September and that Russia would be represented by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

“While expressing an understanding for Russia’s decision, PM (Modi) thanked President Putin for Russia’s consistent support to all initiatives under India’s G20 Presidency,” it said.

The last time the Russian president attended the G20 summit in person was in 2019 in Osaka, Japan.

During the summits in 2020 (Riyadh) and 2021 (Rome), both held during the COVID-19 pandemic, Putin was present virtually.

He missed the 2022 Bali summit, where he was represented by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

He had also decided to skip the just-concluded first in-person BRICS summit in&nbsp;Johannesburg as the&nbsp;International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for him in March over war crimes in the war on Ukraine.

South Africa, the BRICS summit host country, is an ICC signatory and was expected to help in Putin's arrest if he was present in the country.&nbsp;

The US forecasters have said that Tropical Storm Idalia is expected to transform into a Category 3 hurricane on Monday (Aug 29) as it fast approaches Florida gulf coast.

The storm is currently about 90 miles off the western tip of Cuba, and is expected to make landfall on Wednesday (Aug 30) morning near the Big Bend of Florida, the National Hurricane Center said.

“Idalia has been moving erratically and is nearly stationary,” the hurricane centre said.

“A motion toward the north-northeast and north is expected to begin later today, bringing the centre of Idalia over the extreme southeastern Gulf of Mexico by tonight,” it added.

<h2>State of emergency declared in Florida&nbsp;</h2>

On Sunday night, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for 33 counties as the Florida Division of Emergency Management mobilised response personnel to deal with the storm.

“These things can wobble, so Floridians along our Gulf Coast should be vigilant even if you’re currently outside the [forecast zone] cone,” DeSantis said from the Emergency Operations Center in Tallahassee, according to CNN.

He said that around 1,100 National Guard members had been dispatched and command centres have been set up to deal with power outages and other damages.

President Joe Biden spoke with DeSantis on Monday (Aug 28) and approved an emergency declaration for the US state as Tropical Storm Idalia approaches, the White House said.

Parts of the west coast of Florida, the Florida Panhandle, southeast Georgia and the eastern Carolinas could see around 4 to 8 inches of rain from Tuesday (Aug 29) into Thursday (Aug 31), with isolated totals of 12 inches possible, the hurricane centre said.

After the successful landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the Moon's south pole on August 23, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday (August 26) announced that the landing point will be called "Shiv Shakti". He added that there was also a discussion over naming the point where Chandrayaan-2 crashed in 2019 and the point has been named "Tiranga".

The announcements were made when Prime Minister Modi was at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) headquarters in Bengaluru, where he congratulated the scientists who contributed to the moon mission's success.

ISRO Chief S Somanath on Thursday said that exploring the Moon's south pole offered potential discoveries of water and much scientific data.&nbsp;

There has been much curiosity about the South Pole ever since Chandrayaan-1 recorded evidence of water on the Moon.&nbsp;

It is believed that water ice on the Moon is capable of providing fuel, oxygen, and drinking water for future missions, but its rough terrain makes landing challenging.
