US President Joe Biden will be travelling to India for the upcoming G20 Summit in the capital New Delhi as he has tested negative for COVID-19, the White House has confirmed.

Not only that, he will also hold bilateral meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The meeting will take place on September 8, ahead of the G20 Summit.

"On Thursday, the President will travel to New Delhi to attend the G20 leader's summit. On Friday, President Biden will participate in a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Modi and on Saturday and Sunday, he will participate in the official sessions of the G20 summit,” US National Security Advisor (NSA) Jake Sullivan told reporters at a White House news conference on Tuesday (Sept 5).

In New Delhi, the U.S. will focus on “delivering for developing countries, making progress on key priorities for the American people from climate to technology, and showing our [its] commitment to the G20,” Sullivan said.

Later, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that President Biden would follow the COVID-19 guidelines of the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) while travelling to New Delhi.

"He [Biden] is not experiencing any symptoms. As far as the steps that he is taking, since the President was with the First Lady yesterday,&nbsp;he will be masking while indoors and around people in alignment with CDC guidance," Jean-Pierre said.

Uncertainty had prevailed over Biden’s presence at the G20 as his wife and First Lady Jill Biden tested positive for Covid on Monday (Sept 4).

It was earlier expected that Jill would also participate in the summit, but US officials said that she will remain at their home in Delaware.

"This evening, the First Lady tested positive for COVID-19. She is currently experiencing only mild symptoms. She will remain at their home in Rehobot,” First Lady’s Communications Director Elizabeth&nbsp;Alexander said.

<h2>Modi’s bilateral meet with UAE president</h2>

Apart from Biden, PM Modi will also hold a bilateral meeting with UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed during the multilateral event over the weekend.

UAE has been invited as a guest for the G-20 summit by India.

In a joint press conference on Monday (Sept 4), Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said that the country is interested in natural gas exports partnership with countries such as India, who may even be invited to the next trilateral summit&nbsp;expected next year.

The summit took place in the Cypriot capital Nicosia to discuss regional energy cooperation to focus on exports to Europe, especially natural gas and renewables.

Echoing similar sentiments, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu talked about plans to expand the 3+1 format beyond the United States and potentially include India.

“There’s something else that could develop, and we discussed it at great length,” the Israeli leader said.

“There is now the possibility that we might have the expansion of the Abraham Accords to normalisation with Saudi Arabia.”

Netanyahu said Israel and Cyprus were working on exporting his country's gas reserves to Europe via the island.

Later in a joint statement following the conclusion of the 9th trilateral summit, the leaders&nbsp;“agreed that the energy sector, and in particular, natural gas, electricity and renewable energy, is a solid foundation for cooperation in the region, based on international law including the law of the sea and the respect of all states to exercise their rights in their respective Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and continental shelf.”&nbsp;

Voting for the Ghosi assembly bypoll, the first electoral showdown in Uttar Pradesh after the formation of the opposition INDIA bloc, is being held at 455 polling stations and will conclude at 6 pm, the office of the State chief electoral officer said.

The Ghosi bypoll was necessitated by the resignation of Dara Singh Chauhan, who had won the seat in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls, from the Samajwadi Party (SP) in July. The OBC leader returned to the BJP and was picked by the party to contest the Ghosi bypoll.

In the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, Chauhan had defeated BJP candidate Vijay Kumar Rajbhar by a margin of 22,216 votes. Ghosi had recorded a polling percentage of 58.59. This time, Chauhan is pitted against the SP’s Sudhakar Singh.

The bypoll will have no bearing on the BJP government, which enjoys a comfortable majority in the 403-member state assembly. However, its outcome is important as it could be an indicator of what is in store for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

<h2>West Bengal</h2>

In Dhupguri assembly constituency in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district, over 2.6 lakh voters are eligible to exercise their franchise in the bypoll. Polling is taking place in 260 booths, of which 71 have been identified as sensitive, the official said. The bypoll to the seat was necessitated by the death of its sitting BJP MLA, Bishu Pada Ray, earlier this year.

CPI (M)‘s Ishwar Chandra Roy is contesting as the candidate of the Congress-Left alliance, while the ruling TMC has fielded Nirmal Chandra Roy, a teacher by profession. The BJP has nominated Tapasi Roy, the widow of a CRPF jawan who died fighting terrorists in Kashmir a few years back.

<h2>Uttarakhand</h2>

The bypoll to the Bageshwar assembly seat in Uttarakhand was necessitated by the death of sitting BJP MLA and cabinet minister Chandan Ram Das in April. He had won the seat in four consecutive polls since 2007.

The bypoll is important as its verdict will reflect the mood of voters in Uttarakhand ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. The BJP won all the five Lok Sabha seats in the State in the 2014 and 2019 general elections.

The BJP has fielded Das’ widow Parvati in the bypoll and is hoping to capitalise on sympathy votes to retain the seat. There are four other candidates in the fray — Congress’ Basant Kumar, Samajwadi Party’s Bhagvati Prasad, Uttarakhand Kranti Dal’s Arjun Dev and Uttarakhand Parivartan Party’s Bhagwat Kohli. However, the direct contest is likely to be between the BJP and the Congress.

In Tripura, BJP's Tafajjal Hussain, who unsuccessfully contested the last assembly election from Boxanagar, is contesting against CPI(M) nominee Mizan Hussain. The Boxanagar assembly segment has 66% minority voters of a total of 43,087 electors. In the last assembly elections in February, the CPI(M) managed to retain the seat. The by-election to the Boxanagar constituency was necessitated by the death of CPI(M) MLA Samsul Haque.

The BJP won the seat for the first time in the assembly poll held seven months ago. Union Minister Pratima Bhoumik’s resignation as the MLA of Dhanpur necessitated the by-election to that seat.

<h2>Kerala</h2>

In the Puthuppally assembly constituency in Kottayam district, the ruling CPI (M) and the opposition Congress are locked in a fierce battle as the seat fell vacant after the demise of Congress stalwart and former Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. Chandy represented the constituency in Kottayam district for more than five decades without any break until his demise on July 18 this year.

The Congress-led opposition UDF has fielded Oommen Chandy’s son, Chandy Oommen, which analysts view as an apparent strategy to capitalise on the sympathy wave following the former CM’s death. The ruling Left Front once again decided to go with DYFI leader Jaick C. Thomas who had unsuccessfully contested the segment in 2016 and 2021 against the late Chandy.

Voting for the by-election to Dumri assembly&nbsp;is under way in 373 polling stations, of which around 200 have been identified as Maoist-affected booths. Over 2.98 lakh voters, including 1.44 lakh women, are eligible to exercise their franchise in the by-election and will decide the electoral fate of six candidates, including three independents.

Ukraine's First Lady Olena Zelenska for the first time opened up about how the Russian war has impacted their family emotionally.

In an interview with BBC, Zelenska said that she had been living apart from her husband, Volodymyr Zelensky, for more than a year due to security threats arising out of the ongoing conflict and added that it has taken a toll on her family.

"This may be a bit selfish, but I need my husband, not a historical figure, by my side," she told BBC in an interview posted online Tuesday morning (Sept 5).

"But we stay strong, we have strength both emotionally and physically. And I am sure we will handle it together," she added.

She spent the initial months of the Russian invasion hiding in secret locations with her children.

<h2>Separated for more than a year</h2>

Zelenska described the first critical days as "a constant feeling of adrenaline" before she forced herself to accept "the existing conditions."

Due to the Russia-Ukraine war, Volodymyr Zelensky’s movements have been kept as secret.

"We don't live together with my husband, the family is separated," Zelenska said.&nbsp;

"We have the opportunity to see each other but not as often as we would like. My son misses his father."

She said that the uncertainty of the war has cost her family dearly.

<h2>'My children miss him'</h2>

‘It pains me to watch that my kids don’t plan anything. At such an age, young people. My daughter is 19. They dream of travelling, of new sensations, emotions. She does not have such an opportunity,’ she was quoted as saying.

Zelenska met her husband in high school. Both of them later worked together in a comedy troupe and TV studio, with him as an actor and her as a scriptwriter.

Now, she says that she never dreamt of her husband becoming the "historical figure" he is today, adding that she has missed him and needed him to stand by her side as her husband.

Though she acknowledges that her feelings are nothing but a "selfish" longing, Zelenska said the president "really does have the energy, the will power, inspiration, and stubbornness to go through this war."

Two people have been detained for allegedly damaging a part of the iconic Great Wall of China while carrying out construction work in central Shanxi province.

According to local media reports, the workers used an excavator to “severely” damage a segment of the 32nd Great Wall while trying to dig a shortcut.

The names of those who have been detained have not been provided, except that they are a 38-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman.

Police say they dug a "big gap" by widening an existing cavity of the Great Wall so that their excavator could pass through it.

According to police, the construction workers wanted to reduce the distance they had to travel.

<h2>'Irreversible damage'</h2>

The police also stressed that they have caused "irreversible damage to the integrity of the Ming Great Wall and to the safety of the cultural relics", state-run CCTV reported on Monday (Sept 4).

Both were arrested on August 24 in Yuyou County after receiving reports about damage to the wall. The case is under further investigation, the police statement stated.

“Currently, the two suspects have been criminally detained in accordance with the law, and the case is continuing to be investigated,” said CCTV.

Declared a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1987, the Great Wall was built and rebuilt on a continual basis from around 220 BC until the Ming Dynasty in the 1600s when it was the world's largest military structure.

The present structure that is seen by tourists was constructed during the Ming Dynasty, hence it is referred to as the Ming Great Wall.

<h2>Much of the wall demolished&nbsp;&nbsp;</h2>

The damage was inflicted on a section of the wall dating back to the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). It is also home to a relatively well-preserved watch tower and is listed as a provincial cultural relic.

India has hit back at the recent comments made by UN experts on the Manipur sectarian violence, calling them “unwarranted, presumptive, and misleading”.

Asserting that the situation in the northeast state is peaceful and stable, the Indian mission said that the Indian government was committed to taking requisite steps to maintain peace and stability.

"The Government is also committed to protecting the human rights of the people of India, including the people of Manipur,” it said in the note verbale sent on Monday (Sept 4) to the Special Procedures Branch of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.

“The Permanent Mission of India completely rejects the news release as it is not only unwarranted, presumptive and misleading but also betrays a complete lack of understanding on the situation in Manipur and the steps taken by Government of India to address it,” the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva said.

<h2>India kept in the dark about UN report&nbsp;</h2>

The response from India came after the Special Procedure Mandate Holders (SPMH) released a report titled ‘India: UN&nbsp;experts alarmed by continuing abuses in Manipur’.

The Indian mission expressed disappointment and surprise that the SPMHs chose to issue the press release without waiting for the 60-day period for the Indian government to respond to a joint communication issued on the same topic on August 29, 2023.

The Indian mission expressed hope that in the future, the SPMH would be “more objective” in their assessment, based on the facts.

<h2>'Refrain from making remarks'</h2>

It hoped that the SPMH would “refrain from commenting on the developments, which have no relevance to the mandate given to them by the Council and abide by the established procedure for issuing news releases and wait for inputs sought from the Government of India before doing so.”

India slams ‘unwarranted and misleading’ remarks of UN experts on Manipur violence

The French government has introduced new proposals to ban the use of meat names like "steak" and "spare ribs" for plant-based food made in the country as it seeks to avoid "misleading claims".

The proposed decree bans a list of 21 meat names to describe protein-based products, including “steak”, “escalope”, “spare ribs”, “ham” or “butcher”.

However, over 120 meat-associated names such as "cooked ham", "poultry", "sausage" or "bacon" will still be authorised provided that the products do not exceed a certain amount of plant protein, with percentages ranging between 0.5 per cent and 6 per cent.

Also, the word "burger", used by many brands to attract consumers, is not included on the lists.

The rules would be applicable to products made and sold in France, the EU’s largest agricultural producer.

<h2>To maintain transparency&nbsp;</h2>

The guideline was unveiled on Monday (Sept 4) to maintain “transparency and honesty responding to the legitimate expectations of consumers and producers”, Agriculture Minister Marc Fesneau said in a statement.

The proposals, which were first announced in June last year, had to go through some changes after the French courts objected to them a month later for being too vague and the timing of implementation being too short.

Once the decree&nbsp;goes into effect, France will become the first EU country to impose such restrictions.

&nbsp;“This new draft decree reflects our desire to put an end to misleading claims... by using names relating to meat products for foodstuffs that do not contain them,” French agriculture minister Marc Fesneau said.

Workers carefully manoeuvred diggers to move downed tree branches and electrical wiring that had snapped and splayed across the rain-drenched road.

Further north in coastal Changbin township, workers ferried massive concrete blocks to a coastal highway that had partially collapsed from the force of waves slamming into it, hoping they would absorb the impact.

Heavy orange-coloured barriers were placed near the edge to prevent cars from skidding over on the slippery roads.

Haikui -- the first&nbsp;typhoon&nbsp;landfall in Taiwan in four years -- forced the evacuation of more than 7,000 people across the island, particularly from landslide-prone mountainous regions. Hundreds of flights were cancelled and businesses were closed.

More than 217,000 households temporarily lost power through Sunday and overnight. By midday Monday, 11,000 homes still had no electricity, while schools and businesses remained closed in 14 cities as torrential rain bucketed down.

A forecaster with Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau said Haikui initially appeared to track away from the island and out to sea but made a second landfall in Kaohsiung at around 4:00 am (2000 GMT Sunday).

During the night "the centre of the&nbsp;typhoon&nbsp;was almost circling" the port city, but as it moved along the coastline "the structure of the&nbsp;typhoon&nbsp;is damaged by the terrain and gradually weakens", she said.

By mid-day, the storm had moved southwest of Taiwan's outlying island of Penghu, but was still bringing torrential rain and strong winds to the south and northeast.

In picturesque Hualien county, waterfalls cascaded down the lush cliffs along Taiwan's east coast, while market vendors in Keelung -- a northern port city surrounded by mountains -- braved the rain to sell fruit to raincoat-clad shoppers.

In Kaohsiung, the local government reported hundreds of toppled trees and flooding in dozens of locations, although the situation was easing as the storm departed and the weather conditions improved.

Nearly 80 people suffered injuries during the&nbsp;typhoon, according to authorities, though they were minor -- mostly due to fallen trees and car accidents.

A strange meteor that fell into&nbsp;the Pacific Ocean nine years ago came from outside of our solar system, a team of Harvard scientists claimed on Tuesday (Aug 29).

Professor and theoretical astrophysicist at Harvard University, Avi Leob said that based on an early analysis of the metallic spheres that fell off the coast of Papua New Guinea in June 2014, it was found that it is interstellar in origin.

Loeb said that the 700 tiny remnants of the meteor did not match any of the existing alloys in our solar system. He, however, added that his team is now finding whether the spheres are artificial or natural in origin

"This is a historic discovery because it represents the first time that humans put their hand on materials from a large object that arrived on Earth from outside the solar system," Loeb wrote Tuesday in the journal Medium.

He also did not rule out the possibility that the fragments could be part of an alien aircraft.&nbsp;

"The success of the expedition illustrates the value of taking risks in science despite all odds as an opportunity for discovering new knowledge," Loeb said.

In June, the team went through the seafloor for two weeks in the hopes of recovering evidence to support his theory.

<h2>Meteor fell on Pacific Ocean in 2014</h2>

Their expedition was financed by entrepreneur Charles Hoskinson who spent $1.5 million in order to retrieve any remnants they could find of the meteorite named IM1 that had crashed into Earth's atmosphere in 2014.

Professor Loeb and Harvard researcher Amir Siraj were the first ones to discover the meteorite and since then, have been working closely with the US military to pinpoint the impact zone near Papua New Guinea.&nbsp;

It is said that the IM1 was able to withstand four times the pressure that would typically destroy an ordinary iron-metal meteor. The meteor had an estimated mass of 460 kg and was between 80 cm and 1 m (2.6-3.3 feet) in diameter.

The team had sent 50 spherical iron fragments to a lab in Berkley, which later found that spheres were 'anomalous' and more durable than any observed naturally-produced meteorite.&nbsp;

Iron is the main component of any hardest known natural meteorites, so these Harvard scientists believed that there must be something very unusual about how the object was made.

<h2>Components of meteor 'extra-terrestrial'</h2>

Professor Loeb said, “More than 95% of all meteorites contain iron-nickel metal. As a consequence, meteorites have concentrations of nickel far greater than those of almost any terrestrial rock.”

However, unlike these typical iron-nickel meteorites, fragments of IM1 contained only “negligible” amounts of nickel, along with other “trace elements,” according to a preliminary statement given to DailyMail.com.&nbsp;

Trace elements means any chemical compound or atomic element present only in extremely small amounts, less than 100 parts per million.

“The fundamental question is whether the meteorite was of natural or technological origin. We hope to answer this question with further analysis of its isotopic composition and radioactive dating,” Leob stated.

A report by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) newspaper has claimed that Chinese nationals, sometimes posing as tourists, have been spying on US military bases and other sensitive sites in recent years.

The report published on Sunday (Sept 3) further states, quoting senior US officials, that it has occurred more than 100 times in recent years.

A joint meeting was convened by the Defence Department, FBI and other agencies last year to try to limit these incidents that involved “gatecrashers” because of their attempts to get into US military bases without proper authorisation, the WSJ report said.

Examples of “gatercrashing” included Chinese crossing into a US missile range in New Mexico, and scuba divers swimming in murky waters near a US government rocket launch site in Florida, the report said.

<h2>Spying on sensitive US&nbsp;sites</h2>

The report said that some other incidents involved people following Google Maps directions to a McDonald's or Burger King located on military bases.&nbsp;Other more serious instances include a group of Chinese nationals trying to push past guards at an army base in Alaska, claiming they had reservations at a hotel on the base.

US officials believe that these trespassing incidents are linked to a more detailed plan to spy on sensitive US sites.

Most of these incidents happened in rural areas, where the tourism flow is a little low— areas not recognised as tourist hot spots and located far away from major airports—leading the officials to believe that they are not tourists.

<h2>Officials yet to respond</h2>

The report further said that the involved Chinese nationals were pressed into service and required to report back to the Chinese government.

The report comes at a time when Washington and Beijing are taking tentative steps to soothe tensions that spiked after a suspected Chinese high-altitude spy balloon crossed the United States before the US&nbsp;military shot it down off the East Coast&nbsp;in&nbsp;February.
