Despite facing multiple criminal charges and 91 indictments, Donald Trump remains the top choice as the Republican contender for US presidential polls, comfortably beating his rival Ron DeSantis, the Florida governor.

According to a Wall Street Journal poll released on Saturday, around 59 per cent of Republican primary voters have thrown their support behind the 77-year-old former president, marking an 11-point increase since the paper conducted a similar survey in April this year.

DeSantis, on the other hand, recorded a slump in his support to 13 per cent, from 24 per cent in April.

<h2>Vivek Ramaswamy catching up quickly&nbsp;</h2>

The Florida governor is only five points ahead of former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley. Whereas, the up-and-coming tech tycoon Vivek Ramaswamy is also threatening DeSantis’s status as the only viable alternative to Trump.

Notably, the WSJ in its polls has noted that Trump’s lead over DeSantis has nearly doubled to 46 percentage points since the April survey, indicating a strong support for the Capitol riots.

Around 78 per cent of voters said that Trump’s efforts to subvert the 2020 election were legitimate attempts to ensure an accurate vote, while only 16 per cent thought that he illegally attempted to obstruct Congress from certifying the 2020 presidential election results.

GOP voters overwhelmingly thought that the four criminal cases against Trump lacked merit, with around half saying they had fuelled their support for him.

Moreover, about 48 per cent of the surveyors said that the indictments had motivated them to support Trump even more in the 2024 election, while 16 per cent indicated that this legal action made them less likely to support him.

The poll was conducted from August 24 to 30, collecting responses from 1,500 registered voters and 600 primary voters via telephone and web surveys.

According to Politico, the latest survey has jolted the DeSantis campaign, which is now shifting its focus to halt Ramaswamy’s momentum.

Never Back Down, the super PAC supporting&nbsp;DeSantis, is reportedly looking into Ramaswamy’s past hoping to find some damaging material.

On Sunday, Ramaswamy, who has been Trump’s staunchest supporter among the Republican hopefuls, appeared to be putting some distance between himself and the former president.

While continuing to oppose the indictments, he questioned Trump’s behaviour on 6 Jan&nbsp;2021.

The confirmation came days after a Reuters news agency report quoting sources stated that Chinese President Xi Jinping will be skipping the marquee event.

Till now, no reasons have been provided by the Chinese officials for Xi’s absence from the G20 meeting.

Before the India visit, Li will head to Indonesia to attend a summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) being held from September 5-8, the foreign ministry stated on September 1.

Xi is the second leader to give the G20 event in New Delhi a miss. Russian President Vladimir Putin has already conveyed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that it will not be possible for him to travel to India to participate in the summit.

The southern Odesa port region in Ukraine witnessed fresh flare-ups overnight after Russia launched its second attack in two nights in ports, damaging warehouses, production buildings and industrial enterprises.

Several fires also broke out in civilian residences due to falling debris, he said, but they had since been put out. There were no deaths or injuries.

It said up to 120 litres per square metre of rain could fall over 12 hours in Madrid.

"Due to the exceptional and abnormal situation, in which rainfall records will be broken, I ask the people of Madrid to stay at home today," Madrid Mayor Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida wrote on X.

Almeida said that Sunday would most likely see the capital city’s rainfall record break&nbsp;with 120 litres per square metre. In 1972, Madrid witnessed 87 litres per square metre of rainfall, which was the highest recorded at that time.

Madrid's emergency services sent texts to residents warning them of flood risks and advising them not to use vehicles.

Sunday’s forecast of heavy rain comes after Spain endured an intense heat wave and persistent high temperatures in August, which was also the case with much of southern Europe.

On Saturday, local media reported that police were investigating whether two people who died while practising canyoning in northern Spain had drowned.

At least two people were killed&nbsp;and three injured after a shooting at a mall in Austin, Texas, authorities said, adding that one of the deceased is the&nbsp;shooter.

The Austin Police Department (APD) had received a call around 5 pm on Thursday about shots being fired, following which the police, along with paramedics, were deployed at the scene.

The FBI and The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) were also called in following reports of explosives&nbsp;at the scene, but they did not find any.

The shooting occurred at a business near The Arboretum, an outdoor shopping centre.

Two people were found dead at the scene, Austin-Travis County EMS announced on X.

<h2>One critically injured, two mildly&nbsp;</h2>

One of the injured, who is an adult, was taken to a local trauma facility with "critical, life-threatening injuries," Austin-Travis County EMS said. Two other adults were being evaluated for minor injuries.

Police and emergency medical personnel, along with some 30 vehicles, responded to the shooting at the 1000 block of Research Boulevard, interim police Chief Robin Henderson said.

The Taliban government has signed mining contracts worth US$6.5 billion, pegged to one of the biggest deals since it seized power in Afghanistan two years ago.

The announcement was made on Thursday as the Taliban marked the second anniversary of the withdrawal of all US-led NATO troops from the country after nearly 20 years of war.

Shahabuddin Dilawar, the Taliban minister of mines and petroleum said that a Chinese company has been awarded the contract to extract gold in Takhar province. He did not name the company that got the contract, but said that it would get 65 per cent share of the earnings over five years, VOA news outlet reported.

Earlier this year, a Chinese firm signed an oil extraction contract with the Taliban administration. Beijing lately has also shown interest in investing in lithium mining in Afghanistan.

The minister said that the other contracts involving in mining and processing iron ore in Herat province include Turkish, Iranian and British investments.

The Taliban believe that the extraction from this province would earn the government a 13 per cent share over 30 years.

"It will eventually turn Afghanistan into an exporter of iron," he said.

According to the Times of India newspaper, the incident took place in Pratappur, around 380 kilometres from the capital Raipur city. The school is said to be under the management of Bishop’s House, Ambikapur.

It accommodates 141 boys and girls, primarily from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, in a hostel with only 21 seats.

The newspaper in its report noted the harrowing living conditions of children in the school and the cramped rooms they are being made to live in.

The matter came to light after a video of locals giving biscuits to hungry children went viral on social media.

The administration was later informed of the matter and ordered an inquiry.

<h2>'Wanted kids to learn to struggle'</h2>

During the investigation, the superintendent, father Peter Sadom, admitted that he didn’t give food to the children, arguing that the kids needed to “learn to struggle”.

“We arrange everything for the kids, yet they break utensils and balls. They should learn to struggle and be punished for their wrongdoing. We did not give them two meals. The allegation of keeping them hungry for two days is wrong,” Sadom was quoted as saying.
