A new survey by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) has shown that American students and their learning capabilities took a big hit due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Reportedly, students saw a big decline in their reading and mathematics scores. NAEP said reading scores had dropped to 1992 levels while four in 10 eighth-grade students failed to have a basic understanding of mathematical concepts. 38 per cent of students scored 'below basic' scores in mathematics which was significantly worse than the 2019 figures when it stood at 31 per cent. In the state of Cleveland, the drop was the steepest as fourth-grade reading saw a decline of 16 points. Moreover, not a single state saw any major improvement in the average test scores of the students. According to NAEP. the survey was conducted on hundreds of thousands of fourth and eight graders and showed that decades of academic growth were erased and racial disparities widened. A car bomb and shooting attack on a hotel in the Somali city of Kismayu killed nine people on Sunday before security forces ended the siege at the hotel and killed the attackers, a regional official said.

Gunfire erupted after an explosives-laden vehicle rammed into the gate of the port city's Tawakal Hotel. 
The al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab militant group said it had carried out the attack.&nbsp;

"In the explosion, nine people including students and civilians were killed and 47 others were injured, some of them seriously," Yussuf Hussein Dhumal, Security Minister for Jubbaland, told Reuters.

"The hotel where the explosion happened was near a school, so many students were injured."

Security forces killed three of the attackers and a fourth died in the bomb blast, Dhumal said.

Before the attack, a meeting was being held at the hotel to plan how to fight al Shabaab, Farah Mohamed, a security officer, told Reuters from Kismayu.

Mohamed Nur, a police captain, and Farah Ali, a shopkeeper in Kismayu, told Reuters the blast at the hotel preceded the gunfire.

Video footage from the Somali National Television posted on its Twitter account showed security personnel load one of the wounded into an ambulance.

Abdiasis Abu Musab, al Shabaab's military operation spokesperson, said the group was behind the attack, which he said had targeted Jubbaland region's administrators who work from the hotel.

Kismayu is the commercial capital of Jubbaland, a region of southern Somalia still partly controlled by al Shabaab. 
Al Shabaab was driven out of Kismayu in 2012.

The city's port had been a major source of revenue for the group from taxes, charcoal exports and levies on arms, and other illegal imports.

In 2019, a similar attack at another hotel in Kismayu killed at least 26 people.

The group is battling to topple Somalia's central government and impose its own rule based on a strict interpretation of Islamic Sharia law.

It has killed thousands of Somalis and hundreds of civilians across East Africa in a decade-long insurgency.

Gunfire erupted after an explosives-laden vehicle rammed into the gate of the port city's Tawakal Hotel. The al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab militant group said it had carried out the attack. "In the explosion, nine people including students and civilians were killed and 47 others were injured, some of them seriously," Yussuf Hussein Dhumal, Security Minister for Jubbaland, told Reuters. "The hotel where the explosion happened was near a school, so many students were injured." Security forces killed three of the attackers and a fourth died in the bomb blast, Dhumal said. Before the attack, a meeting was being held at the hotel to plan how to fight al Shabaab, Farah Mohamed, a security officer, told Reuters from Kismayu. Mohamed Nur, a police captain, and Farah Ali, a shopkeeper in Kismayu, told Reuters the blast at the hotel preceded the gunfire. Video footage from the Somali National Television posted on its Twitter account showed security personnel load one of the wounded into an ambulance. Abdiasis Abu Musab, al Shabaab's military operation spokesperson, said the group was behind the attack, which he said had targeted Jubbaland region's administrators who work from the hotel. Kismayu is the commercial capital of Jubbaland, a region of southern Somalia still partly controlled by al Shabaab. Al Shabaab was driven out of Kismayu in 2012. The city's port had been a major source of revenue for the group from taxes, charcoal exports and levies on arms, and other illegal imports. In 2019, a similar attack at another hotel in Kismayu killed at least 26 people. The group is battling to topple Somalia's central government and impose its own rule based on a strict interpretation of Islamic Sharia law. It has killed thousands of Somalis and hundreds of civilians across East Africa in a decade-long insurgency. In a video that has since gone viral on the realms of social media, the two 'activists' can be seen throwing the mashed potatoes at&nbsp;Monet's ‘Les Meules’ and later sitting under it whilst bursting into a monologue to explain their actions.&nbsp;

The duo belongs to an environmental group named 'Letzte Generation'&nbsp;(Last Generation).&nbsp;

As reported by WION, earlier this month, two anti-oil activists belonging to&nbsp;a group named 'Just Stop Oil'&nbsp;created a ruckus at the National Gallery in London by throwing tomato soup at Vincent Van Gogh’s painting ‘Sunflowers'.

“What is worth more, art or life?”, said one of the protestors while the other added,&nbsp;“Is it worth more than food? More than justice? Are you more concerned about the protection of a painting or the protection of our planet and people?"

The duo was arrested and later released on bail. However, they have a court case pending.&nbsp;

While the GDP figure has definitely beaten expectations with experts estimating it to be around 3.4&nbsp;per cent in their predictions, it is still much lower than the&nbsp;growth target of 5.5 per cent that the Chinese Politburo had set for itself.&nbsp;

This uptick in the GDP numbers is also significant as China,&nbsp;the world's second-biggest economy grew by a tiny 0.4 per cent in the second quarter (April-June) which was a two-year low for the country.&nbsp;
