Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar said Tuesday (Dec. 3) that the ties between New Delhi and Beijing have seen improvement&nbsp;in the recent past, saying the next priority for the two nations would be continuing de-escalation.

The Indian minister was addressing the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian Parliament, on India-China ties.

Jaishankar added that ties between the two Asian neighbours can’t be normal without peace at the border. He also urged China to respect the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the de facto border between the two nations.

“Recent developments that reflect continuous diplomatic engagements have set Indo-China ties in the direction of some improvement. Disengagement has been achieved in full in eastern Ladakh," the Indian foreign minister said.

Jaishankar in his address said that peace and tranquility along the LAC had been disturbed “as a result of Chinese actions” but recent developments indicate improvement in ties. However, Jaishankar also stressed that China continues to illegally occupy 38,000 square km of the Indian territory.

“The House is cognizant of the fact that China is in illegal occupation of 38,000 square km of the Indian territory in Aksai Chin as a result of the 1962 conflict&nbsp;and the events that preceded it," he said.

Jaishankar also told lawmakers that Pakistan “illegally ceded 5,180 square km of the Indian territory to China in 1963, which has been under its occupation since 1948.”

“We remain committed to engaging with China through bilateral discussions to arrive at a fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable framework for a boundary settlement. Members would recall that the amassing of a large number of troops by China along the LAC in eastern Ladakh in April-May 2020 resulted in face-offs with our forces at a number of points. The situation also led to the disruption of patrolling activities. It is to the credit of our armed forces that despite logistical challenges and the then prevailing Covid situation, they were able to counter-deploy rapidly and effectively," Jaishankar said.

‘Peace at LAC critical for normal ties,’ says EAM Jaishankar in parliament on border talks with China

US First Lady Jill Biden may have forced her husband, President Joe Biden, to pardon their son Hunter Biden in federal tax evasion and gun charges, according to US media reports. Jeff Zeleny, CNN’s chief national affairs correspondent, said on air on Monday (Dec 2) that “Clearly there was pressure inside the family.”

“We were told really in recent weeks that Dr. Jill Biden – First Lady Jill Biden – was very supportive of the president doing something like this,” he added.

Zeleny said Biden was not sure about the pardon but the final push may have come from the First Lady herself.

While talking to reporters Monday, Jill Biden said she supported her husband’s move to pardon their son. “Of course, I support the pardon of my son,” the FLOTUS said.

It was only in September that Hunter pleaded guilty to nine counts related to $1.4 million in unpaid taxes. Earlier in April, he was found guilty of three federal gun charges. White House kept stressing all these months that Joe Biden would not pardon his son, only to walk back on his previous commitment on Sunday (Dec 1).

Biden argued in favour of pardoning his son, saying Hunter “was singled out only because he is my son – and that is wrong.”

BBC quoted Truong’s lawyers as saying that the tycoon was now rushing to raise the required amount but they argue that cashing in her assets was proving to be a difficult task owing to her death sentence.

“The total value of her holdings actually exceeds the required compensation amount,” lawyer Nguyen Huy Thiep was quoted as saying by BBC.

“However, these require time and effort to sell, as many of the assets are real estate and take time to liquidate. Truong My Lan hopes the court can create the most favourable conditions for her to continue making compensation,” he added.

Truong is owner of a few luxury properties in Ho Chi Minh City. She also holds significant stakes in several business and real estate projects.

Over 1,000 assets have been identified by Vietnamese authorities that are believed to be linked to the fraud and all of them have been frozen for now.

When Truong was awarded a rare death sentence in April, she was heading Van Thinh Phat Group, a prominent real estate firm.

AFP news aegncy, citing Blinken reported that the military aid package includes anti-personnel landmines, ammunition for HIMARS precision rocket launchers, Stinger missiles, counter-drone systems, anti-armour weapons and artillery ammunition.

An Ohio woman who killed and ate a cat in a maniacal episode earlier this year was put behind bars for a year by a judge who called her a "danger to our community". Stark County Common Pleas Judge Frank Forchione told Allexis Ferrell that he couldn't "express the disappointment, shock, disgust that this crime has brought to me."

The Massillon Independent reported the judge as saying, "This is repulsive to me. I mean, that anyone would do this to an animal. And an animal’s like a child. I don’t know if you understand that or not."

The judge further called her a "national embarrassment" and said, "You’ve embarrassed this nation. More importantly, you’ve embarrassed yourself."

The stomach-turning case went viral almost a month after Ferrell committed the heinous act. In September, during the presidential campaigning, Donald Trump and his supporters claimed that Haitian migrants were eating pets in Springfield, and Ferrell's case spread on social media as an example of that.

However, officials clarified that Ferrell was not a migrant and that her case wasn't tied to the since-debunked claims.

Ferrell already received an 18-month sentence for two other crimes, a 2019 theft case and a child endangerment case from last year. The current sentence will be added to it, Stark County prosecutor Chelsea Small told the New York Post.

The incident happened on Aug 16 and was caught on camera by a police bodycam. They had reached the scene after receiving a 911 call and saw Ferrell on all fours eating the cat. They could not believe what they were seeing, as one of the cops said, "What did you do? Why did you kill the cat?"

Defence attorney Stephen Kandel told the Massillon Independent that "it's clear that she has an issue with drugs and alcohol", based on her evaluation, through her past history. He said his client would undergo inpatient treatment after being released.

The government of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau splashed billions in loan to ineligible recipients during the COVID-19 pandemic, an audit report revealed Monday (Dec 2). Auditor General Karen Hogan tabled the report in the House of Commons, which highlighted several irregularities in granting the contract involving public money and ensuring efficiency.

It is to be noted that Ottawa launched its Canadian Emergency Business Account (CEBA) programme in the face of the raging pandemic to help businesses deal with the&nbsp;resultant&nbsp;economic crisis. The programme saw the distribution of more than $49 billion in loan to over 900,000 small businesses. Now, Hogan’s report has found that over $3.5 billion of this fund went to ineligible and wrong beneficiaries.

According to the audit report, Canada’s Department of Finance also failed to provide “effective oversight” of more than $853 million in administrative spending.

“CEBA represented a significant expenditure of public funds to support small Canadian businesses facing economic challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Hogan’s report highlighted.

“While there was some flexibility in how government organisations approached programme planning, reporting, and contract processes during the pandemic to achieve results quickly, there was still an expectation of due diligence and controls around how public money was spent,” the report added.

It said the Trudeau government failed to manage the programme and over-relied on a single private contractor —Accenture, a global IT giant— to manage the fund.

Appearing before the panel in June, he asserted that it was "molecularly impossible" for the bat viruses studied in Wuhan to be engineered into SARS-CoV-2.

Despite that, the panel's report said SARS-CoV-2 "likely emerged because of a laboratory or research-related accident."
