The mayor of Mamoudzou, Ambdilwahedou Soumaila, described the situation as "devastating," with nine people critically injured and 246 suffering serious injuries.

France is ramping up rescue operations by deploying additional soldiers, firefighters and medical personnel to Mayotte.

The United Nations warned that 1.7 million people in Malawi, Zimbabwe and Zambia could face flooding due to the storm's aftermath.

Israeli strikes on the Syrian military sites filled the skies with 'colossal' explosions as the blasts got registered on earthquake sensors,  according to a war monitor group.
The military sites located in the coastal Tartus region were targeted by what was one of "the heaviest strikes" in the Syrian area in more than a decade, said Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
"Israeli warplanes launched strikes' targeting a series of sites including air defence units and 'surface-to-surface missile depots," the war monitor said in what it called "the heaviest strikes in Syria's coastal region since the start of strikes in 2012."

Tartus has been one of the two military bases of Russia in Syria and was earlier used as a naval base and an ammunition depot.
The huge explosion, along with the secondary explosions, indicated that a large volume of stored armaments was present in the area.

In the dramatic videos which circulated on the social media platform, a huge bright flash was seen, followed by various explosions that led to the formation of an enormous cloud of smoke into the air.

Earlier, Russia's foreign ministry said that it had evacuated some of the diplomatic staff from Syria, a week after the nation's dictator Bashar al-Assad fled the country.
As per researcher Richard Cordaro, a magnetometer station which is 820km away in Isnik, Turkey also detected the blast.
He said the signal travelled nearly 'twice as fast' as that of a normal earthquake.
In 1971, the Soviet Union was the one to first establish a naval military base in Tartus.
The facility had been classed as a "Material-Technical Support Point" till 2017 and not as a base, and is the only entrance point to the Mediterranean for Russia.
The centre was used for carrying out the supply and delivery of armaments after Russia participated in the Syrian civil war in 2015.
A Kremlin spokesperson said on Wednesday (Dec 11) that Moscow has been in touch with the new authorities in Syria and discussing the future of their bases.

He also thanked the court for allowing him to remain seated on a special chair because of his fragile state of health, which "could have been interpreted as nonchalance" but which was not, he added.&nbsp;

He added that "I have been called many things" but "I rather intend to be forgotten," saying he felt an "inner shame".

According to the report -- "A Digital Prison" -- Serbian authorities have deployed spyware that "provides Serbian authorities with extensive surveillance capabilities once installed on a target's device".

The report includes testimonies of a journalist and activist who accused authorities of covertly installing spyware on their devices while in custody and during an interview with officials.

"Our investigation reveals how Serbian authorities have deployed surveillance technology and digital repression tactics as instruments of wider state control and repression," said Dinushika Dissanayake, Amnesty International's deputy regional director for Europe.

The report highlights the use of the Cellebrite and NoviSpy software and forensic tools to target phones and devices belonging to members of civil society.&nbsp;

Cellebrite products are widely used by law enforcement agencies across the globe to unlock smartphones and search for evidence.&nbsp;

Belgrade-based youth activist Nikola Ristic -- who was profiled by Amnesty in the report -- told AFP his phone was hacked by authorities after being arrested at a protest in November over a deadly railway station roof collapse.&nbsp;

While in custody, Ristic said intelligence officials seized his phone and he was repeatedly told to unlock the device.

"Their behaviour and the conversation with me seemed like a charade, a cover for something else," he told AFP, adding that he did not have any compromising evidence or material stored on the phone.&nbsp;

After being released, Ristic later handed over his phone to Amnesty.&nbsp;

After a forensic scan, it found that Cellebrite had been used to unlock the device and NoviSpy spyware had been installed.&nbsp;

"We don't actually have agencies focused on the safety of citizens, but rather spy agencies," Ristic told AFP.

Serbia's intelligence agency (BIA) dismissed the Amnesty report's claims as "absurd".&nbsp;

In a separate statement, Serbian police said its forces only use forensic tools in accordance with the country's laws.&nbsp;

According to Amnesty, Serbia received the phone unlocking software from Cellebrite as part of a broader package aimed at helping the country meet the requirements for European Union integration.

While in custody, Ristic said intelligence officials seized his phone and he was repeatedly told to unlock the device. "Their behaviour and the conversation with me seemed like a charade, a cover for something else," he told AFP, adding that he did not have any compromising evidence or material stored on the phone. After being released, Ristic later handed over his phone to Amnesty. After a forensic scan, it found that Cellebrite had been used to unlock the device and NoviSpy spyware had been installed. "We don't actually have agencies focused on the safety of citizens, but rather spy agencies," Ristic told AFP. Serbia's intelligence agency (BIA) dismissed the Amnesty report's claims as "absurd". In a separate statement, Serbian police said its forces only use forensic tools in accordance with the country's laws. According to Amnesty, Serbia received the phone unlocking software from Cellebrite as part of a broader package aimed at helping the country meet the requirements for European Union integration. Independent journalists and civil society groups in Serbia have long accused the government and its allies of targeting them with defamatory statements, lawsuits, and public threats.
