China's President Xi Jinping has urged the Communist Party to “turn the knife inward” to address issues of indiscipline, particularly corruption, as part of a renewed effort to root out corrupt officials and their enablers.
Since assuming power over a decade ago, Xi has led an extensive anti-corruption campaign targeting both senior "tigers" and lower-level "flies" who undermine government policies. However, corruption remains a persistent problem within the party, especially in the military.
In the past two years, two former defence ministers have been expelled from the party for “serious violations of discipline,” a term commonly used to refer to corruption. Just last month, the defence ministry revealed that an admiral who served on the Central Military Commission, China’s top military command body, was also under investigation for similar allegations.

Xi's comments about “turning the knife inward” were part of a speech delivered on 8 January at a significant meeting of the party’s anti-corruption watchdog. However, the speech was only made public on Monday (December 16) through excerpts published by Qiushi Journal, a leading party publication.
Xi stressed the importance of addressing internal challenges within the party as circumstances evolve. “As the situation and tasks facing the party change, there will inevitably be all kinds of conflicts and problems within the party,” he said.
“We must have the courage to turn the knife inward and eliminate their negative impact in a timely manner to ensure that the party is always full of vigour and vitality,” Xi added.

The Ursid Meteor Shower happens every year between 17 and 26 December, with its peak this year expected to bring up to 10 meteors per hour, according to EarthSky.org. This gentle shower is caused by debris from Comet 8P/Tuttle, which is about 5 kilometres wide and orbits the Sun every 13.6 years.
The meteors seem to come from the Ursa Minor constellation, also known as the Little Dipper. Since this constellation is circumpolar, meaning it's visible all night in the Northern Hemisphere, the meteors can be seen throughout the night.

These cash transfers took place at a time when Syria was heavily reliant on Russian military support, including mercenaries from the Wagner group. Simultaneously, members of Assad’s family reportedly began acquiring luxury properties in Moscow, as highlighted in the report.
The FT suggested that these transactions show the lengths to which Assad’s regime went to bypass western sanctions that had isolated it from the global financial system.
David Schenker, former US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, told the FT that such moves were expected. “The regime would have to bring their money abroad to a safe haven to be able to use it to procure the fine life... for the regime and its inner circle,” he said.

In New Mexico, a 16-year-old boy has been detained in what is believed to be a shocking and tragic case of "family annihilation."
Identified as Diego Leyva, the teenager in an intoxicated state is believed to have shot and killed four members of his family, including his younger brother aged 14.

According to a Facebook post by the New Mexico police, the teen was arrested in New Mexico's Belén, a small city in Valencia county. 
Before dawn on Saturday (Dec 14), the Valencia County Sheriff's Office received a 911 emergency call from the minor "who told the dispatcher he had killed his family".

When deputies arrived at the location, the 16-year-old boy "walked out of the residence with his hands in the air," in an "extremely intoxicated" condition.
Police have identified the victims as Diego Leyva's parents, 42-year-old Leonardo Leyva, 35-year-old Adriana Bencomo, and his two siblings, 16-year-old Adrian Leyva and 14-year-old Alexander Leyva. All were found "deceased from suspected gunshot wounds. A handgun was located on the kitchen table," added the state police.
One of the victims is believed to have been a middle school student and another a local volunteer firefighter.
Valencia County Fire Department Chief Matt Propp, in a statement, said, "We have every reason to believe that one of the victims is a volunteer firefighter." 
The suspect teen has been charged on the suspicion of four counts of first-degree murder. Diego was taken to the hospital for detoxification after his arrest. The murder motive is yet to be released.
