The United States charged four pro-Russian soldiers with war crimes on Wednesday for the abduction and torture of an American national in Ukraine.

Attorney General Merrick Garland said the charges against the four "Russia-affiliated military personnel" were the first to be brought under a US war crimes statute passed by Congress nearly 30 years ago.

Garland, speaking to reporters, said Russian forces in Ukraine had committed "atrocities on the largest scale in any European armed conflict since the Second World War."

"As the world has witnessed the horrors of&nbsp;Russia's brutal invasion of Ukraine, so has the United States Department of Justice," he said. "The Justice Department will work for as long as it takes to pursue accountability and justice for&nbsp;Russia's war of aggression."

According to the indictment, two of those charged -- Suren Seiranovich Mkrtchyan, 45, and Dmitry Budnik -- were commanding officers of military units of the "Russian Armed Forces and/or the so-called Donetsk People's Republic."

The two others charged in the indictment brought in a federal court in Virginia were lower-ranking military personnel, identified by only their first names: Valerii and Nazar.

The Justice Department said Mkrtchyan and the others abducted the US national in April 2022 from his home in the village of Mylove in the Kherson Oblast region in southern Ukraine where he had been living with his wife.

<h2>Mock execution&nbsp;</h2>

The American, who was not identified, was not participating in the armed conflict between&nbsp; Russia&nbsp;and Ukraine, the department said in a statement.

"Acting on behalf of the Russian Armed Forces and the so-called Donetsk People's Republic, these four individuals allegedly violated the human rights of an American citizen," said Katrina Berger, executive associate director&nbsp;of Homeland Security Investigations.

"According to the charges, they unlawfully detained and tortured the American citizen, and even went so far as to carry out a mock execution," Berger said.

The American was held for least 10 days, repeatedly interrogated, threatened with sexual assault and tortured.

"Mkrtchyan, Valerii, Nazar, and others allegedly threw the victim face down to the ground while he was naked, tied his hands behind his back, pointed a gun at his head, and severely beat him," the Justice Department said.

At one point, Budnik allegedly threatened to kill the victim and asked for his last words.

"Shortly thereafter, Nazar and others allegedly conducted a mock execution," the Justice Department said. "They allegedly forced the victim to the ground, put a gun to the back of his head, then moved the gun slightly and shot a bullet just past the victim's head."

The four are charged with three war crimes -– unlawful confinement, torture, and inhuman treatment -– and one count of conspiracy to commit war crimes.

If taken into custody and convicted they face a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Garland told reporters more indictments could be expected under the war crimes statute, which gives the Justice Department jurisdiction to prosecute war crimes committed against US citizens abroad.

<h2>‘I won’t be a dictator…except on day one’</h2>

The former president making controversial statements is nothing new, but this time around he seemingly confirmed his plans to turn America into an autocracy, which Democrats and even some Republicans have been warning about for months now.&nbsp;

Over the past few days, several prominent American media outlets, including The Washington Post, The New York Times and the Atlantic have also sounded the alarm that a second Trump presidency could turn the US into a dictatorship.&nbsp;

The Republican frontrunner appeared in a town hall-style event hosted by Fox News, on Tuesday (Dec 5) before a friendly audience in the US state of Iowa where the party’s nominating contest kicks off next month.&nbsp;

Trump, during the interview, was asked twice by host Sean Hannity to deny that he would abuse power to seek revenge on political opponents if re-elected and unsurprisingly he did not. &nbsp;

“You are promising America tonight you would never abuse power as retribution against anybody?” Hannity asked. To which Trump responded “No. No. Other than day one.”

The former president has faced growing Democratic criticism for his rhetoric which included him saying that he would target political rivals, while referring to them as “vermin”, if he wins a second term, for what he has repeatedly argued are politically motivated prosecutions against him.

Hannity also asked Trump if he “in any way” had “any plans whatsoever, if reelected president, to abuse power, to break the law to use the government to go after people.” To which replied by saying “You mean like they’re using right now?”&nbsp;

Ironically, the former president’s remarks came a month before <a href="https://www.wionews.com/videos/trump-can-be-sued-for-jan-6-riots-us-court-665328">January 6</a>. On that day, in 2021, Trump, who served as the president between 2017 and 2021, refused to concede that he lost the 2020 election to Biden, and spread false claims that the election was stolen from him.&nbsp;

The claims and conspiracy fuelled a deadly insurrection by Trump supporters at the US Capitol who even threatened to “hang” former Vice President Mike Pence to stop him from certifying Biden’s win.

The Democrat White House hopeful’s campaign manager, Julie Chavez Rodriguez was quick to respond and released a statement as soon as the event finished.&nbsp;

“Donald Trump has been telling us exactly what he will do if he’s re-elected and tonight he said he will be a dictator on day one. Americans should believe him.”

The incumbent president has repeatedly warned that his predecessor is a threat to democracy and if he wins a second term, it could lead to an unprecedented and dangerous age of American autocracy.&nbsp;

During a campaign event, Biden even cited Trump as one of the reasons he is running for office at the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/explained-joe-bidens-age-in-focus-yet-again-as-us-prez-celebrates-81st-birthday-ahead-of-2024-elections-660845">age of 81</a>. “If Trump wasn’t running, I’m not sure I’d be running. But we cannot let him win.”

He also said the former president’s increasingly violent language on the campaign trail including the use of the word “vermin” <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/biden-says-not-sure-if-hed-be-seeking-reelection-next-year-if-not-for-rival-trump-666650">echoed</a> the language used in Nazi Germany.

She also said how the US was “sort of sleepwalking into dictatorship” with Trump emerging as the Republican frontrunner and a clear favourite for the party’s presidential nomination.&nbsp;

Cheney, who also chaired the congressional probe of the attack on the Capitol, said a Trump dictatorship is a “very real threat” if he wins the upcoming election. So real that she is weighing a third-party presidential run of her own to try to stop him.

In an article written in The WaPo titled, “A Trump dictatorship is increasingly inevitable. We should stop pretending,” conservative commentator Robert Kagan compared the former president to the power-grabbing Roman emperor Julius Caesar&nbsp;

He also warned that if he came to it, not even the US Constitution and Supreme Court could prevent Trump being “president for life” if he wanted.

Meanwhile, the NYT, in a recent analysis wrote that a second term could unleash a “darker President Trump” worse than what he was during his first term.&nbsp;

The former president has repeatedly “spoken <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/france-alarmed-after-trump-practically-hugged-kim-minister-144120">admiringly</a> of autocrats for decades” and would likely follow their example, including employing loyalists in civil services and using the Justice Department to crack down on opponents, the Times noted.&nbsp;

The NYT also claimed that Trump and his allies are finding ways to use a radical interpretation of “unitary executive theory” that grants unprecedented power to the president arguing that he holds total control of the executive branch, and rejects constraints on presidential power.&nbsp;

The Atlantic magazine dedicated its entire January-February 2024 issue to what a Trump presidency would look like, with an editor’s note aptly titled, “A Warning.”

The special edition of the monthly magazine titled “If Trump Wins” includes two dozen articles about how the twice-impeached, four-time indicted Republican who is also facing <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/explained-the-significance-of-donald-trump-mugshot-629224">90 criminal charges</a>, including some for attempting to overturn the results of the last election, would weaponise the government.&nbsp;

“We can’t participate in the normalization of Donald Trump,” Jeffrey Goldberg, the editor-in-chief of The Atlantic told CNN. Goldberg also spoke about how he believes “that a second Trump term poses a threat to the existence of America as we know it.”

The suspect is said to be in his 30s and he was booked into the Travis County Jail. The Austin Police Department said that he has been charged with capital murder, with additional charges pending.&nbsp;

When they entered the residence, they reportedly discovered two people dead from fatal gunshot wounds.&nbsp;

He said that the suspect opened fire on the officer in the backyard of the residence. He reportedly struck the officer multiple times. The officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was rushed to hospital where his condition was stabilised.&nbsp;

The police said that the suspect allegedly led officers in a high-speed pursuit which ended after his vehicle crashed. The man was arrested with a firearm in his possession.&nbsp;

A grand jury in Oregon has indicted Emerson on 83 counts of recklessly endangering another person — one for each person aboard the flight. With this, he has also been charged with one count of endangering the aircraft, Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt told the press.

<h2>What happened back in October?</h2>

On October 22, Emerson, an off-duty pilot, was on board the&nbsp;Alaska Airlines plane operated by Horizon Air — between Everett, Washington, and San Francisco.

Emerson was sitting in the jump seat of the plane's cockpit, in line with airline policy for non-working staff.

A short way into the journey from Everett, Washington, to San Francisco, the off-duty pilot chatted with the pilots before attempting "to grab and pull two red fire handles that would have activated the plane's emergency fire suppression system and cut off fuel to its engines."

As per a criminal complaint, Emerson told the police, "I pulled both emergency shut-off handles because I thought I was dreaming and I just want to wake up."&nbsp;

Emerson had lunged for the emergency shut-off handles that would've turned off the aeroplane engine fuel supplies, effectively turning it into a glider.

"After a brief physical struggle with the pilots, Emerson exited the cockpit," said the Department of Justice.

Reacting quickly, the pilots reversed the handles, said Alaska Airlines in a statement.

"Flight attendants placed Emerson in wrist restraints and seated him in the rear of the aircraft," the Department of Justice said.&nbsp;

"During the flight's descent, Emerson tried to grab the handle of an emergency exit. A flight attendant stopped him by placing her hands on top of his."

The off-duty pilot also attempted to wrestle open an emergency exit in the rear of the aircraft.&nbsp;

Emerson, who eventually had to be restrained by the cabin crew during an emergency landing, told the police he had not slept in 40 hours.&nbsp;

He had a conversation with the investigating officer "about the use of psychedelic mushrooms, and Emerson said it was his first time taking mushrooms."
