The one face that stood out in the array of officials trapped in the controversy was of the fifth Vice President of the European Parliament&nbsp;Eva Kaili.&nbsp;

Kaili is a former anchor at Mega Channel from 2004 until 2007. In January 2023, her partner Francesco Giorgi, in his testimony, claimed that he along with former MEP Antonio Panzeri received bribes to sway votes in favour of Qatar and Morocco. The cash, according to Giorgi, flowed through an organisation co-founded by Panzeri, called Fight Impunity.&nbsp;

Giorgi said that Kaili was not involved in the corruption scheme.

Kaili's suspicious actions included voting at the Civil Liberties Committee&nbsp;without notification.&nbsp;This was intended to support a report endorsing the idea of allowing Qatari citizens visa-free travel to the European Union.

In a dramatic turn of events, Belgian authorities executed 20 raids across Brussels, seizing €1.5 million in cash.

Eight arrests, including Kaili, Panzeri, and Kaili's father, followed. Kaili lost parliamentary immunity after her father's arrest at a Brussels hotel, where he was caught with a suitcase carrying "several hundred thousand euros."

The arrests extended to Panzeri's home, revealing a large stash of cash in a safe. Offices of the NGO Fight Impunity, led by Panzeri, were also searched.&nbsp;

Morocco's involvement became apparent when Panzeri's European Arrest Warrant implicated the nation.

Reports surfaced of bribes, gifts, and luxury stays received by Panzeri from the Moroccan government. The investigation even pointed at&nbsp;the MEPs' trip to Laayoune in Western Sahara, sponsored by the Moroccan parliament.

Legal actions were taken freezing Kaili's assets and seizing properties.

The European Public Prosecutor's Office requested the lifting of Kaili's parliamentary immunity, citing suspicion of fraud related to parliamentary allowances. The fallout extended to other MEPs like Maria Spyraki.

From December 11, goods produced by the three firms will be barred from entering the United States, bringing the number of designated companies to 30.

This comes "as a result of the companies' participation in business practices that target members of persecuted groups, including Uyghur minorities in the PRC," said the Department of Homeland Security, referring to the People's Republic of China.

COFCO Sugar Holding refines and produces sugar, Jingweida Technology makes devices like network transformers and radio frequency filters, while Xinya New Materials manufactures textile materials.

The US government and lawmakers in a number of other Western countries have labelled China's treatment of the Uyghur minority in the northwestern Xinjiang region as "genocide," although Beijing vehemently denies this.

According to rights groups, at least one million people, mostly members of Muslim minorities, have been incarcerated in the region and face widespread abuses, including forced sterilization of women and coerced labour.

European Union (EU) Commissioner for Agriculture Janusz Wojciechowski is optimistic about the conclusion of the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement next year.

Speaking to WION's diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal, he said, "Free Trade Agreement which is very important because there is huge potential for improvement of our trade relations.. Of course the free trade agreement. I hope that next year will be real progress, and this agreement will be finalised".

He also lauded Indian farmers, highlighting, "As a commissioner in the European Union, I'm very much in favour of the small and medium-sized family farms. But this is the secret of Indian agriculture. Because the majority of farms in India are one- two-hectare, small farms, but they are very productive in the world."

The commissioner is leading a business delegation of 50+ EU company representatives from the agri-food sector and held meetings with the Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Parshottam Rupala.&nbsp;

WION: With me is the EU's Agriculture Commissioner who is here in India. So my first question to you is what's the key focus of your India visit?

Janusz Wojciechowski: This is my second visit to India this year. The first visit was during the G 20. conference organized by the Indian presidency, very successful presidency. We discussed our global challenges for food security. This visit, this mission is specially dedicated to increase our trade relations bilateral relations between European Union and India. I'm accompanied by the representatives of the farmers, agribusiness from many sectors of food production in the European Union. We'd like to work together with our Indian partners, with Indian authorities to increase our trade relation , to reduce trade barriers which are not necessary, which are important to increase our trade trade relations. For me personally, one of the important objectives of this visit is to see what is the phenomena of Indian agriculture because the increase of agricultural production in India last year, last decade is the highest in the world. The decade 2010-2020 agricultural production in India increased 34%, it never happened in the world. This is the best result in the world. As a commissioner in the European Union, I'm very much in favor of the small and medium sized family farms. But this is the secret of Indian agriculture. Because the majority of farms in India are one- two hectare, small farms, but they are very productive in the world. It is important to remember that in the world, small farms no more than two hectares, they manage only 12% of agricultural land in the world, but they produce 35% of food. This is first of all the contribution of the Indian farmers and I'd like to congratulate them for their contribution to food security at the global level.

WION: When it comes to the agriculture aspect. What is the view of the European Union when it comes to the ongoing talks on the FTA talks?

Janusz Wojciechowski: I hope that the our visit, my visit and first of all the visit of the our representatives of the business and the direct contact between the business representatives from European Union and India will be helpful to find to find the solution, to finalize the Free Trade Agreement which is very important because there is huge potential for improvement of our trade relations. Now the value of European Union export to India is 1.4 billion euro which means one euro per capita in India for Indian consumers , but bigger exports from India to the European Union 3.7 billion euro but there is a space for improvement, huge improvement for both sides so that both benefits. First of all because our food production is complimentary. We are not competitors in the global market. Could you imagine that now? India is one of 28 export destinations from the European Union. And 11 directions for import. Huge space for people to increase. I'm very happy, we are after the very important meetings with Indian authorities, with ministers here, it has been a positive discussion and what we should do to improve, what kind of obstacles we should remove from both sides. This is a very constructive meeting. Of course the free trade agreement. I hope that next year will be real progress, this agreement will be finalized.

WION: Have you had a conversation with India on milk production?

Janusz Wojciechowski: Yes, that's India,&nbsp;it has the biggest milk production in the world. There is space for cooperation to exchange experience, to exchange knowledge technologies. This is an important area for our cooperation. Also the animal welfare issues, European Union we are very sensitive. Our people are very sensitive to animal welfare issues. But the motto for many, actually in the European Union, is what Mahatma Gandhi said. He said that the moral progress of civilizations can be judged by how its animals are treated. This is a very important motto for also for our action to improve animal welfare standards to improve climate and environmental standards. We have the same, the same challenge, the same challenge, to make our agriculture more friendly for the environment, for climate, to ensure food security, to strengthen the stability of economic stability for our farmers.

WION: Any progress on the market access. I believe that has been a key issue for the European Union and India provides subsidies for its farmers. Do you think that's an issue in India? We know the farmers are not that rich as the farmers in the West.

Janusz Wojciechowski: I hope that the our visit, my visit and first of all the visit of the our representatives of the business and the direct contact between the business representatives from European Union and India will be helpful to find to find the solution, to finalize the Free Trade Agreement which is very important because there is huge potential for improvement of our trade relations. Now the value of European Union export to India is 1.4 billion euro which means one euro per capita in India for Indian consumers , but bigger exports from India to the European Union 3.7 billion euro but there is a space for improvement, huge improvement for both sides so that both benefits. First of all because our food production is complimentary. We are not competitors in the global market. Could you imagine that now? India is one of 28 export destinations from the European Union. And 11 directions for import. Huge space for people to increase. I'm very happy, we are after the very important meetings with Indian authorities, with ministers here, it has been a positive discussion and what we should do to improve, what kind of obstacles we should remove from both sides. This is a very constructive meeting. Of course the free trade agreement. I hope that next year will be real progress, this agreement will be finalized. WION: Have you had a conversation with India on milk production? Janusz Wojciechowski: Yes, that's India, it has the biggest milk production in the world. There is space for cooperation to exchange experience, to exchange knowledge technologies. This is an important area for our cooperation. But the motto for many, actually in the European Union, is what Mahatma Gandhi said. He said that the moral progress of civilizations can be judged by how its animals are treated. This is a very important motto for also for our action to improve animal welfare standards to improve climate and environmental standards. As per the media reports, those people who were evacuated from the hospital were taken to different parts of Rome so as to be provided treatment.

A US federal judge in San Diego has officially approved a settlement and bars US officials from separating migrant families at the US borders.&nbsp;This comes months after the Biden administration on October 16 this year reached a settlement with migrant families who had been separated at the US-Mexico border during former President Donald Trump's tenure in office.

The settlement is now set to take effect from December 11, media reports said. The agreement does not give monetary compensation but provides support for those affected to apply for humanitarian protection, work permits, and housing assistance in the US. Families will also have access to mental health resources, as per reports.

With the settlement, the policy will not be able to revive for the next eight years. However, there are exceptions. For instance, cases when a parent is posing some sort of risk to their children.

The legal battle originated in 2018 when the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), which advocates for the rights of immigrants,&nbsp;filed a lawsuit to challenge the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" policy. The policy is infamous for notoriously separating undocumented parents from their children upon crossing into the United States.

The policy led to the separation of over 5,000 families, causing widespread public outcry. Images of children held alone in detention facilities, some as young as 6 months old, fueled the controversy.

"But language calling for the massive scale-up of risky and speculative carbon capture and removal technologies risks blowing a gaping loophole through the energy package and must be struck," Reisch added.

Another climate expert said the new draft of the COP28 agreement was the beginning of the end.&nbsp;

Li Shuo, director of China Climate Hub at the Asia Society Policy Institute, told Reuters the first version included options from "two extreme sides of the political spectrum" and the new options were filling in "the empty field in the middle."

An American teenager, who shot dead four of his classmates in 2021 at a high school outside Detroit, was on Friday (Dec 8) sentenced to life imprisonment without parole.

Ethan Crumbley had opened fire on Nov 30 2021 with a semi-automatic handgun that his father bought as a Christmas gift days before the incident occurred.

The shooting claimed the lives of four and injured six other students along with a teacher. Crumbley was 15 years old at the time of the shooting.&nbsp;

His parents have also been charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the shooting.

This is one of the first cases in the United States that has held parents accountable for their child's school shooting.

"All I want is for the people I hurt to have a final sense of culpability that justice has somewhat been served and in a capacity that they can recognize it with. Any sentence that they ask for, I ask that you do impose it on me because I want them to be happy and I want them to feel secure and safe and I don't want them to worry another day," Crumbley said while addressing the court before sentencing.

Parents of the victims as well as survivors of the mass shooting also opened up on the impact of the incident.

"For the past two years our family has been navigating our way through complete hell," said Buck Myre, whose son Tate was among those killed.

"We miss Tate," Myre said. "Our family has a permanent hole in it that can never be fixed. Ever."

Ethan Crumbley had opened fire on Nov 30 2021 with a semi-automatic handgun that his father bought as a Christmas gift days before the incident occurred. The shooting claimed the lives of four and injured six other students along with a teacher. Crumbley was 15 years old at the time of the shooting. His parents have also been charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the shooting. This is one of the first cases in the United States that has held parents accountable for their child's school shooting. "All I want is for the people I hurt to have a final sense of culpability that justice has somewhat been served and in a capacity that they can recognize it with. Any sentence that they ask for, I ask that you do impose it on me because I want them to be happy and I want them to feel secure and safe and I don't want them to worry another day," Crumbley said while addressing the court before sentencing. EU member states strike landmark deal on first-ever laws to regulate AI

Vladimir Putin has decided to run in Russian presidential elections next March, news agencies reported Friday (Dec 8). The decision will allow Putin to extend his decades-long grip on power.&nbsp;

State-run news agencies reported that Putin told Lieutenant Colonel Artyom Zhoga, a Russian military officer, about his decision to participate in the upcoming vote following an awards ceremony for army personnel at the Kremlin.&nbsp;

This comes after Russian lawmakers on Thursday moved Putin a step closer to a fifth term in office by setting the date of the country's 2024 presidential election for March 17, which was voted unanimously by the members of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly.&nbsp;

If you’re a Rohingya refugee family in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar, the world’s largest refugee camp, you would be expected to combine the three to put a roof over your head.

For years now that’s been the ground reality, and a grim one at that, for Rohingyas, a Muslim ethnic minority group who have lived for centuries in predominantly Buddhist Myanmar, seeking refuge in neighbouring Bangladesh after being uprooted.

Since the threat of genocide has hung over them like the proverbial sword of Damocles, the Rohingya have been forced to disperse, and have fled Myanmar over the past few years, calling Cox’s Bazar home. It’s a place filled with the displaced. A dreary and forlorn people, for whom the hopes and dreams of a better future away from their homeland - Myanmar, formerly Burma - continue to linger.

Rohingya camps have been set up in both hilly and plain terrain. The world has labelled them the 'boat people' for their instinctive and, rather, fundamental call to row away from their homeland against the tide when the military took over their livelihood, tossing aside their basic human right to freedom.

Food, clothing, shelter, otherwise assumed people’s basic needs, have now become a luxury. A hearty meal on good days is rice and dal (lentil soup), a refugee says, and now with the lack of funds their sustenance hinges on rice and salt.

Speaking to WION, Sajjad Hussain (name changed) says, there is enough to be disheartened about, but he is hopeful of building a community that can survive in the world. “My people are smart, but lack basics that can bring them at par with the world,” he says with optimism.

<h2>Freedom on crutches</h2>

In a state of dire hand-to-mouth existence, an inhabitant remembers days when he had enough for himself. “I belonged to a well-to-do family when I was in my homeland - Burma. After the military rule, things began to go downhill,” said the 25-year-old.

His family faced hardships even when it came to visiting relatives. Freedom of movement looked like a far-fetched dream. “We needed written approval to step out of our area,” Hussain said of his dark days on the land he once called home.

After making desperate attempts to lead a normal life, he along with many others, fled Myanmar in 2017 to reach Cox’s Bazar in the hope of a better life. Little did he envision himself as a refugee.

<h2>The refugee workforce</h2>

Amid the constant struggle to live, finding a job was an uphill task. “People exploited us, paid us meagre salaries, but got enough and more work out of us,” he says.

Today, the only kind of employment one can manage to obtain is volunteer work. Needless to say, there was always going to be a disparity in payment, a point brought to our attention by a volunteer.

While a citizen gets paid 40,000 taka (local currency), a refugee working in a similar capacity is paid just 3,000 taka.

With years of experience, Hussain has now started negotiating for his rights as an employee and wants to at least be compensated for the amount of work he does.

<h2>Misery in sickness and health:</h2>

“For reporting any illness, the prescription always contains one medicine, paracetamol,” he adds. “I won’t lie, pregnant women get good medical support, but there is no aid for life-threatening ailments.”

<h2>‘I’m a scammer, they say’</h2>

“We have not interacted with people from developed countries,” says Hussain, who looks at the internet as a boon which allows him access to the world in order to seek aid for refugees currently living in and around his camp.

“My way of communication may not be as polished and people look at me as a scammer when I try to raise funds for our refugee families. Nobody will know what the life of a refugee is, it is not a place to be.”

<h2>Latching on to food during floods</h2>

Food is gold.

Monsoon brings tales of despair for camp inhabitants who are put up in low-lying areas. Episodes of incessant rains are not a rarity, and a refugee's instinct makes him run to save foodgrains. "We run to save our rice bags when we see water filling up."

<h2>Daydreamers</h2>

'How many countries have you visited?' I ask.

"We have not seen a world, we all have dreams and aspirations. I feel like travelling and seeing places, but if things go on like this that day probably will never come."

Talking about dreams, Hussain added, "We refugees are a business and a lucrative one. They say we are not here to travel or see places. We must be prepared to be tossed when the world decides to toss us around. We are the world’s football.”

We live cramped up in our shelter, we struggle with our basic needs every day. "Life in prison is better than the one am living currently," he adds.

<h2>A constant search for a safe haven</h2>

The specter of danger lingers constantly over the refugees. Capsizing of boats during migration has claimed many lives and isn't a thing of the past. Refugee families have seen children being thrown into the fire, and their women are not safe. "Our women were raped in front of their brothers and fathers, their genitals were mutilated. Our children were thrown into fire, we have seen this cruelty in front of our eyes."

Having gone through pain, shaken mentally by the atrocities unfolding around each passing day, the hopeful refugee says, "We try to keep sane and live on as a community with whatever we have.”

Canada is intensifying financial requirements for international students seeking study permits, with Immigration Minister Marc Miller almost doubling the mandatory proof of funds. As part of the changes, the minimum bank account requirement for study permit applicants will increase from $10,000 to $20,635 in 2024, in addition to the tuition fees paid by international students, Canada's local media reports said.&nbsp;

Additionally, those who have already submitted study permit applications by December 7, 2023, and those currently in Canada will be allowed to work off-campus for more than 20 hours per week until April 2024.&nbsp;The temporary lifting of the 20-hour work limit for international students, in place since last year, will now be extended until April 30, 2024.

In response to the high immigration and housing crisis, Miller has issued a stern warning, threatening significant restrictions on visas if provinces and educational institutions do not address the issue promptly.

Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Miller said that the federal government is willing to take drastic measures, including limiting visas, to ensure that designated learning institutions provide sufficient support for international students.
