South Africa's foreign ministry hailed the ruling by the UN's top court and called it a "decisive victory" for the international rule of law.

"Today marks a decisive victory for the international rule of law and a significant milestone in the search for justice for the Palestinian people," the foreign ministry said.

The International Court of Justice ruled in favour of South Africa's request to impose emergency measures against Israel over its military operations in Gaza.

The court ordered Israel to prevent acts of genocide against the Palestinians and do more to help civilians, in&nbsp;its war against Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip.

However, the court has not yet ruled on whether genocide occurred in Gaza, which was the&nbsp;very core of the case brought up by South Africa.

<h2>Israel must prevent actions violating Genocide Convention: ICJ</h2>

In its ruling, the ICJ said that it has taken into account the Israeli defence minister's comments regarding 'human animals' in Gaza. The court ruled that some of the acts and omissions committed by Israel are under the Genocide Convention's provisions. ICJ said that no evidence of genocide in Gaza must be destroyed.

The International Court of Justice has further ordered Israel to take all possible measures to prevent genocide and any kind of actions which fall under the scope of the Genocide Convention.

A case was filed by South Africa against Israel in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in December, in which they had alleged that the devastating offensive against Hamas, in which 25,700 people were killed, amounted to state-led genocide and had breached the UN’s genocide convention, which was signed in 1948 in response to the Holocaust.

South Africa has appealed to the ICJ to impose nine orders on Israel which include immediate suspension of military activity and provide more access to humanitarian aid to war-torn Gaza.

Billionaire Bernard Arnault has surpassed Tesla CEO Elon Musk to become the richest man in the world.&nbsp;

CEO of global luxury goods company LVMH, Arnault and his family’s net worth grew to $207.8 billion after an increase of &nbsp;$23.6 billion on Friday, exceeding Musk’s $204.5 billion mark, as per Forbes real-time billionaires list.

This comes after Tesla suffered a blow in the stock market on Thursday (Jan 25), plummeting to 13 per cent which made Musk lose more than $18 billion in net worth, according to a Forbes report.

On the other hand, LVMH shares rose by over 13 per cent on Friday around 11 am immediately after the news of strong sales surfaced.

LVMH's market cap reached $388.8 billion on Friday, compared to Tesla’s $586.14 billion market cap, as per Forbes.

<h2>Tesla shares drop by 12 per cent</h2>

Tesla shares on Thursday dropped by over 12 per cent after Musk cautioned that the sales growth would go down despite slashing the prices that have already caused a dent in the margins of the world's most valuable automaker.

Musk on Wednesday said that growth would be "notably lower" as Tesla shifts its focus on making cheaper next-generation electric vehicles at its Texas factory in the second half of 2025.

However, he said that speeding up the production of the new model would pose challenges as it would involve the latest technologies.

"The Tesla headlines have essentially gone from bad to worse," said TD Cowen analysts, noting that the fourth-quarter revenue and profit were also below expectations.

"The problem for Tesla is any significant attempt to boost sales from here on will probably need to be achieved at the cost of further falls in operating margin, due to having to compete with BYD in China, as well as increased competition elsewhere," said Michael Hewson, chief market analyst at CMC Markets.

In the edited five-minute-long video, soldiers Daniella Gilboa and Karina Ariev, and civilian Doron Steinbrecher were seen identifying themselves and appealing to the Israeli government to find a way for them to return them home.

The women claimed that they had been detained by Hamas for 107 days and their comments were mostly critical of the failure of Israel to rescue them, while all three hostages were referred to be under bombardment or fire.

Nearly 26,083 Palestinians, among which 70 per cent of them young children, women, and adolescents, were killed in the bombardments and ground offensive carried out by Israel in the Gaza Strip, as per the health ministry of the Hamas government.

Prominent Russian nationalist Igor Girkin was on Thursday (Jan 25) convicted by a Moscow court for inciting extremism and jailed for four years.

Girkin, who denied the charges, has strongly condemned President Vladimir Putin for not effectively pursuing the war against Ukraine.

He reportedly had also actively contributed towards instigating the conflict between Kremlin-backed separatists and Kyiv's armed forces in Ukraine's Donbas region in the year 2014.

Moscow City Court said Girkin was found guilty of "public calls to carry out extremist activities", further adding that the 53-year-old would serve his sentence of imprisonment in a general regime colony.

"I serve the Fatherland!" Girkin yelled out after the verdict was read out.

During his pre-trial custody, he launched a campaign to challenge Putin in the next presidential election scheduled to be held in March.

While in jail, he gave an interview to the Russian media, where he said that the country had "entered a period of acute instability" and faced "imminent catastrophe".

A Thai woman has been arrested after her pet lion was spotted enjoying a luxurious cruise in the streets of Pattaya, seated regally in the back of a white Bentley.

The viral video, posted by 'Madamannudon' on Facebook, captured the lion cub wearing a collar and basking in the extravagance of the ride through Soi Phratamnak 5 in Bang Lamung district back in December 2023.

The lion's chauffeur, a Sri Lankan man has already left the country. He is a friend of the arrested Thai woman Sawangjit Kosoongnern, the owner of the lion.&nbsp;

Sawangjit is believed to have purchased the lion from a Thai man in Nakhon Pathom province, which is about 56 kilometres from Thailand's capital&nbsp;Bangkok.&nbsp;

While moving the lion from&nbsp;Nakhon Pathom to&nbsp;Pattaya, the former owner&nbsp;failed to comply with regulations.

Every year since 1994, January 26 is celebrated as Australia Day. For most Australians, it is an official holiday and an opportunity to go to the beach, enjoy a summer Test match and have fun.&nbsp;

However, the choice of date coincides with the arrival of the&nbsp;European settlers at Sydney Harbour in 1788.

For some, the date marks the start of a violent colonial campaign that nearly erased the Aboriginals from their native lands.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Indigenous Australians make up 3.8 per cent of the country's 26 million people and have occupied the land for at least 65,000 years.

Counted among the most disadvantaged people in the country who face several issues including poor health and education, they have been rejecting the holiday.&nbsp;

Aboriginal elder Adrian Burragubba attended one of the rallies and said "Australia Day doesn't mean anything to us".

"It's the day of Aboriginal sovereignty," Burragubba said.

<h2>British colonial statues vandalised</h2>

Notably, on the eve of Australia Day, statues of British colonial figures, Captain James Cook and Queen Victoria, were damaged in Melbourne.&nbsp;

Captain Cook's statue was reported felled near Jacka Boulevard, cut off at the shins and sprayed with the words: "The colony will fall."&nbsp;

Elsewhere, former British monarch Queen Victoria's statue was smeared with red paint.&nbsp;

Victorian premier, Jacinta Allan condemned the attack and said this sort of "vandalism" did not have a place in Australian society.&nbsp;

“We will be working with the council to repair and reinstate the statue in St Kilda that has been vandalised overnight," said Allan.&nbsp;

A court in military-run Myanmar has put up for auction the villa where ex-leader and democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi spent 15 years under house arrest, and set starting bids at 315 billion kyats ($90 million), a source said on Thursday.

Suu Kyi, back in detention since the military overthrew her government in 2021, has been embroiled in a decades-long legal dispute with her brother over ownership of the lakeside villa.

A person with knowledge of the proceedings said the court-ordered auction will be held at the house on March 20.

Suu Kyi remains in detention, though her whereabouts are unknown. She faces 27 years in prison convictions for crimes ranging from treason and bribery to violations of the telecommunications law, allegations she denies.

World leaders and pro-democracy activists have repeatedly called for her release.

She gave impassioned speeches to crowds of supporters over the metal gates of the house and it has been the site of some of her most high-profile meetings, including with former U.S. president Barack Obama and secretary of state Hillary Clinton. New York's American Museum of Natural History has announced that it will close two major halls to comply with new federal regulations that mandate museums to acquire consent from Native American tribes before displaying objects related to them or even performing research on them. The announcement was made on Friday (January 26) by the museum's president in a letter to museum staff.&nbsp;

“The halls we are closing are artifacts of an era when museums such as ours did not respect the values, perspectives and indeed shared humanity of Indigenous peoples,” Sean Decatur, the president.“Actions that may feel sudden to some may seem long overdue to others.”

The halls the museum is closing has galleries dedicated to the Eastern Woodlands and the Great Plains. They will be closed this weekend. The museum will also cover some other display cases which contain Native American cultural items.

The federal rules have taken effect this month.

Major New York Museum to halt Native American displays over new regulations

Chinese officials have asked their Iranian counterparts to help rein in attacks on ships in the Red Sea by the Iran-backed Houthis, or risk harming business relations with Beijing, four Iranian sources and a diplomat familiar with the matter said.

The discussions about the&nbsp;attacks&nbsp;and trade between China and Iran took place at several recent meetings in Beijing and Tehran, the Iranian sources said, declining to provide details about when they took place or who attended.

"Basically, China says: 'If our interests are harmed in any way, it will impact our business with Tehran. So tell the Houthis to show restraint'," said one Iranian official briefed on the talks, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity.

The attacks, which the Houthis say are in support of Palestinians in Gaza, have raised the cost of shipping and insurance by&nbsp;disrupting&nbsp;a key trade route between Asia and Europe used widely by ships from China.

The Chinese officials, however, did not make any specific comments or threats about how Beijing's trading relationship with Iran could be affected if its interests were damaged by Houthi attacks, the four Iranian sources said.

While China has been Iran's biggest trading partner for the past decade, their trade relationship is lopsided.

Chinese oil refiners, for example, bought over 90% of Iran's crude exports last year, according to tanker tracking data from trade analytics firm Kpler, as US&nbsp;sanctions kept many other customers away and Chinese firms profited from heavy discounts.

Iranian oil, though, only accounts for 10% of China's crude imports and Beijing has an array of suppliers that could plug shortfalls from elsewhere.

The Iranian sources said Beijing had made it clear it would be very disappointed with Tehran if any vessels linked to China were hit, or the country's interests were affected in any way.

But while China was important to Iran, Tehran also had proxies in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria and Iraq, besides the Houthis in Yemen, and its regional alliances and priorities played a major role in its decision making, one of the Iranian insiders said.

Asked for comment about meetings with Iran to discuss the Red Sea attacks, China's ministry of foreign affairs said: "China is a sincere friend of the countries of the Middle East and is committed to promoting regional security and stability and seeking common development and prosperity."

"We firmly support Middle Eastern countries in strengthening their strategic independence and uniting and collaborating to resolve regional security issues," it told Reuters.

Iran's foreign ministry was not immediately available to comment.

<h2 data-testid="Heading">Axis of resistance</h2>

Military&nbsp;strikes&nbsp;by US&nbsp;and British forces on Houthi targets in Yemen this month have failed to stop attacks on shipping by the group, which controls a large chunk of Yemen including the capital Sanaa and much of the country's Red Sea coast by the Bab al-Mandab strait.

The Houthis, who first emerged in the 1980s as an armed group in opposition to Saudi Arabia's Sunni religious influence in Yemen, are&nbsp;armed, funded and trained&nbsp;by Iran and are part of its anti-West, anti-Israel "Axis of Resistance".

A senior U.S. official said Washington had asked China to use its leverage with Iran to persuade it to restrain the Houthis, including in conversations Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan had this month with senior Chinese Communist Party official Liu Jianchao.

But Gao, a former Chinese diplomat and an adviser to oil giant Saudi Aramco, said Beijing would view Israel's treatment of the Palestinians as the root cause of the Red Sea crisis and would not want to publicly ascribe blame to the Houthis.

A US&nbsp;State Department spokesperson declined to comment when asked about bilateral Iran-China discussions on the issue.

A diplomat familiar with the matter said China had been talking to Iran about the issue but it was unclear how seriously Tehran was taking Beijing's advice.

Two officials in the Yemeni government, an enemy of the Houthis, said they were aware that several countries, including China, had sought to influence Iran to rein the Houthis in.

Analysts Gregory Brew of Eurasia Group and Ali Vaez of the International Crisis Group said China had potential leverage over Iran because of its oil purchases and because Iran was hoping to attract more Chinese direct investment in future.

However, both said China had so far been reluctant to use its leverage, for several reasons.

"China prefers to free-ride on the U.S. safeguarding freedom of navigation in the Red Sea by bloodying the Houthis' nose," said Vaez, adding that Beijing was also aware that Iran did not have total control over its Yemeni allies.

Houthi spokesman Mohammed Abdulsalam said on Thursday that Iran to date had not conveyed any message from China about scaling back attacks.

"They will not inform us of such a request, especially since Iran's stated position is to support Yemen. It condemned the American-British strikes on Yemen, and considered Yemen's position honourable and responsible," he said.

The four Iranian sources said it was unclear whether Iran would take any action following the discussions with Beijing.

The stakes are high for Iran as China is one of the few powers capable of providing the billions of dollars of investment Tehran needs to maintain the capacity of its oil sector and keep its economy afloat.

China's influence was evident in 2023 when it facilitated an agreement between Iran and regional rival Saudi Arabia to end years of hostilities.

Yet while there are robust economic ties between China and Iran, Beijing's influence on Tehran's geopolitical decisions was not absolute, one of the Iranian insiders said.

Some within Iran's ruling establishment have questioned the value of the partnership with Beijing, pointing to relatively low non-oil trade and investment volumes since China and Iran signed a 25-year cooperation agreement in 2021.

Iranian state media says Chinese firms have only invested $185 million since then. State media also said last year that Iranian non-oil exports to China fell 68% in the first five months of 2023 while Iran's imports from China rose 40%.

By contrast, Chinese companies committed last year to invest billions in Saudi Arabia after the countries signed a comprehensive strategic partnership in December 2022.

Two of the Iranian insiders said while China could not be ignored, Tehran had other priorities to consider and its decisions were shaped by a complex interplay of factors.

"Regional alliances and priorities as well as ideological considerations contribute significantly to Tehran's decisions," one of the people said.

The second person said Iran's rulers had to adopt a nuanced strategy when it came to the Gaza war, as well as the Houthi attacks, and that Tehran would not abandon its allies.

Iran's role as leader of its "Axis of Resistance" - which includes the Houthis, Lebanon's Hezbollah, Hamas and militias in Iraq and Syria - had to be balanced against avoiding getting sucked into a regional war over Gaza, the Iranian sources said.

Tehran's messaging to - and about - the Houthis required a measure of deniability about the extent of its control over them - but also an ability to claim some credit for their anti-Israel actions, one of the people said.

"Winds with peak gusts of around 90 km per hour (55 mph) are possible," the weather forecaster said on its website.
