A witness who saw the nitrogen gas execution of 58-year-old Kenneth Eugene Smith, while speaking to the Daily Mail, spoke about how the Alabama inmate wriggled in pain when he was suffocated to death. 
 
Smith was taken to the execution chamber located at the William C. Holman prison in Atmore and was given a tight mask to wear on his face. 
 
Speaking about the moment when the convict was executed, spiritual guide Jeff Hood said that it was the “worst thing” he had ever witnessed in his life. 
 
He added that even prison officials were left horrified seeing Smith withering in pain for almost 22 minutes before dying. “When they turned the nitrogen on, he began to convulse, he popped up on the gurney over and over again, he shook the whole gurney,” said Hood.

"I mean, it really was like watching someone put a plastic bag over someone's head and just to see what happens, and holding it as tight as they can, as long as they can, to watch the person resist and shake," said&nbsp;Hood, while speaking to&nbsp;NBC News.

"They repeatedly said that he would not be able to resist the nitrogen, and would be unconscious within seconds. And then he looks like a fish out of water," he said

At one given point, the convict struggled against his restraints as his wife Deanna shed tears seeing his condition from the witness box. 
 
The man spoke his last words through the gas mask after he made a heart sign using his left hand for his family members. “Tonight Alabama causes humanity to take a step backwards... I’m leaving with love, peace and light,” Smith said, as reported by the Daily Mail.

Hood added that the contraption which was used for executing Smith appeared like a firefighter mask.

&nbsp;“I could see the corrections officers, I think they were very surprised that this didn't go smoothly - one of the state officials in the room was so nervous she was tap dancing,” he added while speaking to the Daily Mail.

The court had given a death sentence to Kenneth Eugene Smith in 1996 for a 1988 murder and he was&nbsp; pronounced dead at 8:25 pm (0225 GMT Friday), as per local media, which cited southern state Governor Kay Ivey's statement.

Thai PM attends India’s Republic Day celebrations in Bangkok; Ramayana performance showcased

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday (Jan 26) said it was "obvious" that the Russian IL-76 military transport plane, which was carrying Ukrainian prisoners of war, was shot down by Ukraine over the border region of Belgorod this week.

As per claims made by Moscow, the plane was flying to the region before the prisoner swap which was to take place on Wednesday (Jan 24) when it was hit by anti-aircraft missiles. It said&nbsp;there were 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war present inside the aircraft.

Ukraine has neither confirmed nor denied shooting the plane, however, Kyiv&nbsp;has&nbsp;have been questioning if the prisoners were really on board.

"I don't know whether they did it on purpose or thoughtlessly, but it is obvious that they did it," said Putin, while speaking to student soldiers in his first reaction to the plane crash.

<h2>Ukraine aware of Russia's plan to transfer prisoners, alleges Putin</h2>

He further alleged Ukraine was aware of how Russia was planning to shift the prisoners when they hit the plane, an accusation which has been fiercely disputed by Kyiv.

"The main intelligence department of the Ukrainian army knew that we were taking 65 servicemen there. And knowing about it, they struck this aircraft. In any case, it is a crime," he said.

Meanwhile, criminal investigations have been opened by Kyiv and Moscow and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has appealed for an international probe.

Less than two weeks after Iran and Pakistan exchanged deadly cross-border strikes, gunmen in southeastern Iran have killed nine foreign nationals, according to reports in Iranian media. A&nbsp;subsequent statement from Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs protesting the incident indicated that the foreign nationals may have been Pakistani.

"According to witnesses, this morning unknown armed men killed nine non-Iranians in a house in the Sirkan neighbourhood of Saravan city&nbsp;in Sistan-Baluchistan province," the Mehr news agency reported.

The agency further said that no group or individuals had claimed responsibility for the attack. 
 
Pakistan's&nbsp;ambassador to Tehran, Muhammad Mudassir Tipu&nbsp;posted on X&nbsp;that he was "deeply shocked by horrifying killing of 9 Pakistanis in Saravan".

"Embassy will extend full support to bereaved families... We called upon Iran to extend full cooperation in the matter."

On Friday (Jan 26), the UNRWA said that it had sacked many employees who were accused of being involved in Hamas'&nbsp;unprecedented October 7 attack on Israel and led the United States to stop critical funding.

Head of the agency Philippe Lazzarini promised to hold "accountable, including through criminal prosecution" any UNRWA employee who is found to be involved in acts of terror.

Responding to the firing of employees, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also said that an "urgent and comprehensive independent review of UNRWA", will be conducted, as stated by his spokesman Stephane Dujarric.

The US State Department announced that it has "temporarily paused additional funding" to the agency while the claims are being reviewed by the officials. Twelve employees "may have been involved", it said.

Canada and Australia also temporarily suspended their funding to the agency.

The United States is planning to redeploy nuclear weapons in the United Kingdon to address fears of increasing threat from Russia, said a report in the British media. If the nuclear weapons are deployed in the UK, it will be the first such step from the US in last 15 years. The warheads are expected to be three times stronger than the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima in Japan during the Second World War. Reports in media said that the nuclear warheads may be deployed at the Royal Ai Force Lakenheath base in Suffolk.

This will not be the first time the US would have stationed nuclear warheads in the UK. The US, previously had its nuclear warheads stationed in the UK but they&nbsp;were removed in 2008 as it was perceived that the threat of Cold War was diminishing.
