<p>Moldova's foreign minister announced his resignation on Wednesday, saying he had fulfilled his objective of steering the country towards the European Union, a process that pro-Russian separatists in the country have threatened to fight.</p>

<p>The small former Soviet republic led by pro-European president Maia Sandu was given the green light by the EU in December to open negotiations on joining the 27-nation bloc along with neighbouring Ukraine.</p>

<p>Both countries face a long process involving changes to meet EU standards, which Nicu Popescu, who became foreign minister in 2021, noted had been going on for several years.</p>

<p>"I have completed all obligations to integrate Moldova into the EU which were set by President Maia Sandu. I need a pause," minister Nicu Popescu told a media briefing.</p>

<p>Analysts praised Popescu's role in supporting Sandu's efforts to move the country closer to the EU and said he was resigning to spend more time with his family living in France.</p>

<p>His resignation comes at a sensitive time for Moldova, where a duty on imports and exports introduced in the New Year were met this week by a call from pro-Russian separatists in its Transdniestria region for military readiness.</p>

<p>Sandu has denounced Russia's invasion of Ukraine and accused Moscow of plotting a coup to oust her. The Kremlin says she is fomenting Russophobia.</p>

<p>Before Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the bulk of Moldovan energy needs came from a single Soviet-era pipeline controlled by the Russian state-owned gas monopoly, Gazprom.</p>

<p>Boeing, currently under intense scrutiny after the mid-air fuselage panel blowout incident involving a 737 MAX 9 jet flown by Alaska Airlines, encountered further trouble as the nose wheel of a Boeing 757 passenger jet, operated by Delta Air Lines, dislodged and rolled away during the aircraft's lineup for takeoff at Atlanta's international airport on Saturday (Jan 20).</p>

<p>The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said that the incident occurred over the weekend at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. None of the 184 passengers or six crew members on board were injured in the incident.</p>

<p>According to a preliminary FAA notice, the 757 aircraft was preparing for takeoff when its nose wheel detached and rolled down a hill. The flight was scheduled for Bogota, Colombia, at the time of the mishap.</p>

<p>During the ATC conversation, another airline waiting for takeoff notified authorities that the nose wheel of the Delta Air Lines 757 passenger aircraft, positioned in front of it and ready for departure, had popped off.</p>

<p>Nauru’s government, on January 15, two days after the new Taiwanese president was elected released a statement saying that it is severing ties with Taiwan. This comes as China has been gradually poaching the few remaining diplomatic allies of the self-governed island.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As a part of China’s claims on Taiwan, Beijing has also maintained that since Taiwan is its territory it has no right to state-to-state ties, which the self-governed island has strongly disputed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Since 2016, the initial election of DPP President Tsai Ing-wen, 10 countries have switched ties from Taipei to Beijing. Taiwan, excluding Nauru, now has 12 diplomatic allies.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Turkish parliament on Tuesday (Jan 23) gave its long-awaited approval to Sweden's NATO membership, pushing the Nordic country significantly closer to the Western military alliance. Hungary is the only other NATO country left to ratify the Swedish membership bid.<br />

Three months after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan submitted a bill which approved Sweden's membership to parliament, the country's MPs voted in favour of ratification late on Tuesday night.</p>

<p>After a four-hour-long debate, 287 lawmakers voted in favour of Sweden's NATO membership, while 55 voted against it. Sweden is now likely to become the 32nd member of the alliance. The Turkish president is likely to sign the ratification document of Sweden and conclude the role of Ankara in the protracted saga in the days ahead.</p>

<p>Taking to social media after the voting, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said, "Today we are one step closer to becoming a full member of NATO Positive that the Grand General Assembly of Turkey has voted in favour of Sweden’s Nato accession.”</p>

<p>Sweden’s Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom said that the vote was “of course good”, but added that the government is now waiting for Erdogan to sign the ratification and send it on. “Of course, we are not finished with the process until it has happened, on the Turkish side,” he said while speaking to Swedish broadcaster SVT.</p>

<p>The United States further appreciated the approval granted by the Turkish parliament, with National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan stating on social media that the addition of Sweden to NATO is set to make the alliance "safer and stronger".</p>

<p>"I am not going to spend too much time on Donald Trump's cognitive disorders," Pelosi told MSNBC,&nbsp;right before she momentarily confused Donald Trump with Joe Biden.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"He tried to say that Nikki Haley did not allow the National Guard to come but it was Nancy Pelosi. It was nobody. It was Joe...," Pelosi mistakenly said. "It was Donald Trump," she added a moment later about the sequence of events on Jan 6, when supporters of Donald Trump attacked the US Capitol after Joe Biden's presidential victory. Pelosi was referring to the alleged denial of the service of the National Guard at the scene to control the riotous situation in the power corridor&nbsp;of the world's oldest democracy on Jan 6, 2021.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Pelosi was responding to the row that erupted when Trump appeared to confuse Nancy Pelosi with Nikki Haley.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Trump accused that&nbsp;as in charge of security, Nikki Haley denied the service of National Guards in the Capitol on Jan 6, 2021. Haley could not have done that because she was not the charge of security then, Pelosi was.&nbsp;</p>

<p>During a rally in Concord, New Hampshire last week, Trump said. "Look at all the people back there. You got a lot of people. This is supposed to be a quaint little area. This is not quaint at all."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Trump then added: "You know when [Haley] comes here she gets like nine people, and the press never reports the crowds you know."</p>

<p>Trump finally confused Nancy Pelosi with Nikki Haley.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"By the way, they never report the crowd on Jan. 6. You know Nikki Haley, Nikki Haley, Nikki Haley… You know, they — do you know they destroyed all of the information, all of the evidence, everything? Deleted and destroyed all of it. All of it," Trump falsely claimed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Because of lots of things… like Nikki Haley is in charge of security — we offered her 10,000 people, soldiers, National Guards, whatever they want. They turned it down. They don’t want to talk about that. These are very dishonest people."</p>
