North Korea fired “several unidentified cruise missiles” off its east coast on Sunday (Jan 28), said South Korea’s military amid a rise in tensions between the two countries. The latest launch comes days after North Korea claimed to have tested its new strategic cruise missile.&nbsp;

“Our military detected several unidentified cruise missiles fired near waters around North Korea's Sinpo area at 8:00 am today,” said the Joint Chiefs of Staff in a statement, as quoted by AFP.&nbsp;

Earlier on Sunday, the North Korean state media KCNA denounced a series of military drills conducted by the US and South Korean troops in recent weeks and warned of “merciless” consequences.

North Korea’s reported launch on Sunday comes days after it claimed to have tested its new strategic cruise missile dubbed ‘Pulhwasal-3-31’ which it said was currently under development, reported KCNA.&nbsp;

On Thursday (Jan 25), the state media report had also said that the test-firing had no impact on the security of neighbouring countries, and it had “nothing” to do with the regional situation.

The KCNA report also confirmed the South Korean military’s statement which said North Korea fired several cruise missiles towards the Yellow Sea, a day prior.&nbsp;

Pyongyang has ramped up confrontation with Seoul and its ally Washington in the last few months. However, the US and South Korean officials said that they have not spotted any&nbsp;signs of North Korea intending&nbsp;to take imminent military action.

Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis have launched scores of attacks in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden targeting Israeli-linked vessels in response to Israel’s war against the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

International naval forces have been diverted north from the Gulf of Aden into the Red Sea, sparking fears of resurgent pirates exploiting the gap, with the first successful case of Somali piracy since 2017 recorded in December.

“Sri Lanka has alerted the Combined Maritime Forces,” Wickramasuriya told AFP, referring to the international anti-piracy coalition.

He said the navy of neighbouring India has&nbsp;already sent a warship to investigate, while the Sri Lankan navy was also preparing a vessel to travel to the area.

Pirate attacks off the Somali coast peaked in 2011 -- with the gunmen launching attacks as far as 3,655 kilometres (2,270 miles) from the Somali coast in the Indian Ocean -- before falling off sharply in recent years.

Last month, Somali pirates hijacked the bulk carrier MV Ruen.

The Bulgaria-owned and Malta-flagged vessel was seized by Somali pirates 380 nautical miles east of the Yemeni island of Socotra on December 16.

The pirates, who released one injured sailor into the care of the Indian navy, took the MV Ruen and its remaining 17 crew members to Somalia’s semi-autonomous state of Puntland.

Earlier this month, Sri Lanka announced it was joining a US-led maritime taskforce in the Red Sea to protect international shipping against attacks by the Houthis.

However, the cash-strapped island is yet to send a vessel.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe has said that Houthi attacks had raised freight costs and were impacting Sri Lanka’s exports of garments and tea.

Armed assailants launched an attack on an Italian church in Istanbul claiming the life of one person, said Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya.

The attack was carried out by two masked men at around 11:40 (0840 GMT) in the Sariyer district of Istanbul during a religious ceremony, Yerlikaya said.

He then added that a probe has&nbsp;been launched into the incident.

The minister, sharing details about the deceased said that the individual identified as C.T. lost his life in the armed attack while attending Sunday's service.

Turkish officials released a statement saying that the assault looked like targetted killing rather than an attack against the Catholic church.&nbsp;

Local officials said that around 40 people attended the mass, and suggested that there could have been more casualties.&nbsp;

"After the second shot, the gun didn't work, then they (attackers) ran. At this moment, everyone lied on the floor. There were around 35 to 40 people inside," Sariyer district's mayor Sukru Genc told reporters.&nbsp;

Turkish President Erdogan expressed condolences over the attack during a phone call with the priest of the Italian church and other local officials.&nbsp;

Israel has since retaliated with constant bombardment and ground operation in the Palestinian enclave killing more than 26,000 people, mostly women and children, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.&nbsp;&nbsp;

<h2>Nine countries suspend aid for UNRWA</h2>

As of Saturday, six European countries, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Finland, joined the United States, Australia and Canada in pausing the funding to the UN aid agency.&nbsp;

Berlin, on Saturday (Jan 27), became the latest European country to suspend funding saying so long as the accusation had not been cleared up, “Germany, in agreement with other donor countries” would for the moment withhold approval for further resources, said the foreign ministry in a statement.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz said UNRWA should be replaced once fighting in the enclave dies down after accusing it of ties with the Islamist militants in Gaza.&nbsp;

“In Gaza’s rebuilding, @UNRWA must be replaced with agencies dedicated to genuine peace and development,” said Katz.&nbsp;

Notably, the UNRWA plays a significant role in the Palestinian enclave and helps provide education, health and aid services to two-thirds of Gaza’s 2.3 million population.&nbsp;

“Any UNRWA employee involved in acts of terror will be held accountable, including through criminal prosecution,” the UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini had said when the allegations were first levelled against the agency’s staff.

However, he did not disclose the number of employees allegedly involved in the attacks, nor the nature of their supposed involvement.&nbsp;

<h2>Palestinian officials, Hamas condemn&nbsp;decision</h2>

Several top Palestinian officials and Hamas have criticised the decision by some Western countries to suspend funding to the UNRWA warning of a “great” risk.&nbsp;

The Palestinian foreign ministry criticised what it described as an Israeli campaign against UNRWA.&nbsp;

“At this particular time and in light of the continuing aggression against the Palestinian people, we need the maximum support for this international organization and not stopping support and assistance to it,” he added.&nbsp;

The Palestinian militant group, Hamas, on Saturday, slammed Israeli “threats” against the UN agency.&nbsp;

"While I understand their concerns -- I was myself horrified by these accusations -- I strongly appeal to the governments that have suspended their contributions to, at least, guarantee the continuity of UNRWA's operations," Guterres said in a statement, on Sunday.&nbsp;

He added, "The abhorrent alleged acts of these staff members must have consequences." However,&nbsp;Guterres said, "tens of thousands of men and women who work for UNRWA, many in some of the most dangerous situations for humanitarian workers, should not be penalized."&nbsp;

According to the UN chief,&nbsp;12 UNRWA employees were cited in the accusations by Israel out of which one is dead, nine&nbsp;have been fired and the "identity of the two others is being clarified,"&nbsp;Guterres confirmed.&nbsp;

In a shocking development, two activists splashed soup on the bullet-proof glass safeguarding Leonardo da Vinci's iconic painting "Mona Lisa" in Paris on Sunday (Jan 28).

The protesters did so demanding the right to "healthy and sustainable food", reported news agency AFP.

The two women, on Sunday morning, hurled the orange and red soup onto the clear casing protecting the famous artwork displayed at the Louvre Museum in France's capital city causing a commotion.

The unprecedented act resulted in gasps from the crowd, who were undoubtedly shocked and surprised by the sudden turn of events.

"What is more important? Art or the right to healthy and sustainable food," the activists asked, standing in front of the painting and speaking in turn.

"Your agricultural system is sick. Our farmers are dying at work," they said before security staff evacuated the room.

A police source, as per AFP reports, said that both the activists have been detained.

The Louvre Museum released a statement saying that the protesters had hidden the pumpkin soup in a coffee thermos.

They said that the stunt marked the "start of a campaign of civil resistance with the clear demand... of the social security of sustainable food".

Member of the group, Till Van Elst claimed that they wanted the state to provide people food items at reduced rates through a specialised social security card.&nbsp;

Under the scheme, democratic assemblies would choose the food to be subsidised.

"We want citizens to really be able to... decide what is in their plates," he told AFP.

The report added that while Sunak's position is safe for now, those plotting to get rid of him are preparing for a campaign of attrition between now and the local elections on May 2.&nbsp;

One senior Tory leader told the publication: "There was a school of thought that Simon Clarke had jumped and expected others to follow and been surprised that no one else had. That is not the case. Once those are over, Sunak could face a challenge. Those who oppose him believe that things can’t get any worse and want him to take ownership of the mess before they seek to install a new leader."
