Two children - a three-year-old girl and a two-month-old baby -&nbsp;were&nbsp;rescued by the Philippine Red Cross after nearly 60 hours from a gold-mining village which was hit by a landslide on Friday (Feb 9).&nbsp;

The children's rescue was hailed as a "miracle" as the searchers had lost all hope of finding anyone alive.&nbsp;

The girl, whose age was not disclosed, was a part of more than 100 people who went missing after the village was hit by the rain-induced landslide, in which at least 11 people were killed.&nbsp;

The girl was found as bare hands and shovels were used by the rescuers to find survivors in Masara village on southern Mindanao island, said disaster agency official Edward Macapili of Davao de Oro province, while speaking to AFP.

"It's a miracle," Macapili said, adding that the searchers had felt that the missing people were probably dead.&nbsp;

The officials also shared a video in which the mud-caked child was being carried by the rescuer in his arms on Facebook.

"We can see in the social media posts that the child did not have any visible injuries," said Macapili.

He added that the girl met her father before going to the medical facility for a check-up.&nbsp;

On Tuesday night (Feb 6), a landslide hit the area and engulfed three buses as well as jeepneys waiting to pick up gold mine workers and also destroyed houses.

At least 11 people were killed in the landslide and 31 others were injured, while more than a hundred have been missing, as per the official figures.&nbsp;

The searchers were in a race against time as well as weather as they tried to rescue anyone who was alive in the thick mud, as it continued raining on Friday (Feb 9).

Heavy earth-moving equipment was also used by the rescuers in places and they relied on their bare hands as well as shovels to find people in the areas.&nbsp;

The searchers also used sniffer dogs to detect those who were buried beneath the mud and rubble.

Parts of Mindanao were pounded by rain on and off for weeks and this triggered flooding and dozens of landslides which forced tens of thousands of people to hide in emergency shelters.

Hundreds of families had to evacuate from their homes and shelter in emergency centres in Masara and four nearby villages fearing more landslides.

Meanwhile, classes have been suspended by the schools across the municipality. The area which has been hit by the landslide was declared a "no build zone" after previous landslides took place in 2007 and 2008, said Macapili.

"People were asked to leave that place and they were given a resettlement area, but the people are so hard-headed and they returned," he said.

Malaysia's top court on Friday declared unconstitutional more than a dozen Islamic laws enacted by the state of Kelantan, in a landmark decision that could affect similar Sharia laws in other parts of the Muslim-majority country.

Malaysia has a dual-track legal system with Islamic criminal and family laws applicable to Muslims running alongside secular laws. Islamic laws are enacted by state legislatures while secular laws are passed by Malaysia's parliament.

A nine-member Federal Court bench, in an 8-1 decision, declared 16 laws in Kelantan's sharia criminal code "void and invalid", including provisions criminalising sodomy, incest, gambling, sexual harassment, and the desecration of places of worship.

Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, who delivered the majority judgement, said the northeastern state had no authority to enact the laws, as the subject matter was covered under parliament's law-making powers.

Kelantan, which lies just south of Thailand in Malaysia's north, is governed by Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) which has advocated for a stricter interpretation of Islamic law.

PAS has seen increased popularity in recent years amid growing Islamic conservatism among Malaysia's majority ethnic Malay Muslims, and is seen as a challenge for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's multi-ethnic ruling coalition. PAS holds more seats in parliament than any other party.

The constitutional challenge was filed by a Kelantanese lawyer and her daughter against laws covering sharia offences that were passed by the state and came into force in 2021.

Security was tight around the court complex in Malaysia's administrative capital, Putrajaya, as about 1,000 demonstrators gathered outside to protest the case. They prayed and chanted "God is great" as the judgement was delivered.

Justice Tengku Maimun said the case did not have anything to do with the position of Islam in the country, only on whether the Kelantan legislature had acted beyond its powers.

Superintendent Shelley Thompson, who oversees the task force unit, disclosed that the targeted businesses encompassed various sectors such as restaurants, bakeries, used car dealerships and trucking companies all owned by individuals of South Asian descent.

“We conclude that no criminal charges are warranted in this matter,” said the report, adding that the “evidence does not establish Mr. Biden’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.”&nbsp;

However, the long-anticipated report also criticised Biden’s conduct and handling of the documents saying that it posed “serious risks to national security given the vulnerability of extraordinarily sensitive information.”&nbsp;

The report comes after a yearlong investigation into the improper retention of classified documents by Biden, which included material about military and foreign policy in Afghanistan and other sensitive national security matters.&nbsp;

The investigators conducted 173 interviews with 147 witnesses, including Biden himself who was interviewed by Hur last October.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Well-meaning elderly man with poor memory’</h2>

Hur in his argument to not prosecute the incumbent president also said that he was concerned jurors would not believe that Biden “willfully” kept classified documents.&nbsp;

“We have also considered that, at trial, Mr Biden would likely present himself to a jury, as he did during our interview of him, as a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory,” the special counsel wrote.&nbsp;

Hur also directly compared Biden’s response to the federal investigation with former president Donald Trump’s saying that the incumbent president sat for interviews and was cooperative with investigators.&nbsp;

“Mr. Trump allegedly did the opposite,” the special counsel wrote. He added, “According to the indictment, he not only refused to return the documents for many months, but he also obstructed justice.”

Trump has pleaded not guilty to 40 federal counts that he allegedly retained classified documents and resisted efforts by the Justice Department to retrieve them.&nbsp;

As the first day of the hearing at the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS)&nbsp;on Thursday (Feb 8) ended, the judges appeared sceptical towards the decision kicking former President Donald Trump off the ballot in the US state of Colorado for his role in the 2021 Capitol attack.&nbsp;

The nine Supreme Court justices heard arguments related to Trump’s appeal of a December 19 ruling by Colorado’s top court which barred him from the state’s Republican primary ballot citing Section 3 of the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution due to his alleged participation in an insurrection.

<h2>What happened in the court?</h2>

The justices – a six-three conservative majority including three judges appointed by Trump – expressed concerns about states having the power on their own to take sweeping actions which would affect a presidential election nationwide.

Conservative Chief Justice John Roberts told Jason Murray, who is representing the Colorado voters who brought the case, that if the Colorado court’s decision is upheld, other states would also start disqualification proceedings for their own candidates from either of the parties.&nbsp;

“It will come down to just a handful of states that are going to decide the presidential election. That’s a pretty daunting consequence,” said Roberts.&nbsp;

Liberal Justice Elena Kagan asked Murray that the question to confront here is also if a “single state should decide who gets to be president of the United States,” adding that “whether a former president is disqualified for insurrection, to be president again...it sounds awfully national to me.”

Conservative Justice Brett Kavanaugh questioned how Section 3 of the US Constitution would impact democracy, telling Murray that his position would be “disenfranchising voters to a significant degree”.&nbsp;

“The reason we’re here is that President Trump tried to disenfranchise 80 million Americans who voted against him, and the Constitution doesn’t require that we be given another chance,” said Murrary bluntly.&nbsp;

Jonathan Mitchell, a former solicitor general of Texas representing Trump opened the oral arguments and said that only Congress can disqualify a candidate.&nbsp;

“The Colorado Supreme Court’s decision is wrong and should be reversed,” said Mitchell, adding that the decision would “take away the votes of potentially tens of millions of Americans.”

Meanwhile, Mitchell, after being questioned by Liberal Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, said the amendment in question does not apply to Trump as he was the president and not an “officer of the United States,” adding that the term could only be used for an appointed official of some kind.

Notably, justices spent little time discussing the former president’s role in the January 6, 2021 insurrection when thousands of Trump supporters, in a bid to stop lawmakers from certifying Joe Biden’s win, attacked the US Capitol.&nbsp;
