Pennsylvania: Police battle massive house fire amid shooting incident, six feared dead

Tucker Carlson launched a scathing attack against the Biden administration after interviewing Vladimir Putin as he claimed that the Russian president was extremely "hurt" by the rejection of the West.

Russia's the biggest land mass in the world and they have 80 provinces. They have more than enough natural resources. The idea they want to take over Poland is (preposterous). They want secure borders and there's no evidence they want to roll into Vienna. He said he is angry because he thought we were (the West and Russia) were going to be friends,” he added.

He further stated that the Russian president wanted a peace deal in Ukraine and then went on to flagellate the US State Department which he dubbed “lunatics”.

American journalist Tucker Carlson, who came under the spotlight on Thursday (Feb 8) after he interviewed Russian President Vladimir Putin, had previously accused the Biden administration of sabotage claiming that the US government illegally spied on him in a bid to prevent him from conducting a one-on-one with the Russian Premier.

In a preview video posted on Wednesday (Feb 7) on social media platform X, he said that the US government leaked his text messages to other media platforms in order to stop him from interviewing the Russian president.

<h2>'Americans have a right to know about Ukraine-Russia war', says Carlson</h2>

Carlson, further elucidating the reason why he was conducting the controversial interview, said that it was America's right to know Putin's stance on the war with Ukraine and the reason why the Russian president launched an offensive against Kyiv.

"Most Americans have no idea why Putin invaded Ukraine or what his goals are now. You've never heard his voice. That's wrong. Americans have a right to know all they can about a war they're implicated in, and we have the right to tell them about it because we are Americans, too," the American journalist said.

"Freedom of speech is our birthright. We were born with the right to say what we believe. That right cannot be taken away no matter who is in the White House," he added.

<h2>White House rebuffs allegations</h2>

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre rebuffed Carlson’s allegations dubbing them as “ridiculous”.

On being asked about Carlson's interview during her regular press briefing on Tuesday, (Feb 6), Pierre said that the American journalist's statement was “a ridiculous premise and a ridiculous statement” about the administration.&nbsp;

“So I just want to be very very clear — it’s just ridiculous,” she added.

The two-hour interview with Carlson, a former Fox News host and right-wing commentator who supports former US president Donald Trump, was recorded in Moscow.

It was the first interview given by Putin to a Western media outlet since his troops invaded Ukraine in February 2022.

Carlson, who has been a staunch critic of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, had earlier levelled allegations in June 2021 that the National Security Agency was “monitoring our electronic communications and is planning to leak them in an attempt to take this show off the air.” The NSA had dismissed the claims.

Putin also claimed that Clinton later backtracked and said that it wasn’t going to happen. He made the remarks in a&nbsp;pre-recorded interview with Tucker Carlson that aired on Thursday (Feb 8).

In the interview recorded at the Kremlin, Putin said that after he became president in 2000, he asked Clinton if Russia could join the defence alliance after the issues between the countries had settled at the end of the Yugoslav War.

“At a meeting here in the Kremlin with the outgoing President Bill Clinton, right here in the next room, I said to him, I asked him: ‘Bill, do you think if Russia asked to join NATO, do you think it would happen?’ Suddenly he said, ‘You know, it’s interesting. Many of the parades this year will pay tribute to little-known heroes of black history or celebrate Brazil's African and Indigenous roots.

One famed school, Salgueiro, will tell the story of the Yanomami Indigenous people, who are suffering a humanitarian emergency blamed on illegal gold mining in the Amazon rainforest.

Their plight reached crisis level under far-right ex-president Jair Bolsonaro. But his successor, veteran leftist Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, has struggled to reverse the unfolding tragedy.

"The samba school parades continue to be a place for Brazil to self-reflect," says anthropologist Mauro Cordeiro.

"Rio carnival is a space where we talk about Brazil's fundamental political and social issues."

Not that there isn't plenty of room for silliness and fun: the biggest hit single of the 2024 parades is a light-hearted samba singing the praises of the cashew fruit.

But carnival is also serious business.

The party, which is projected to bring in more than $1 billion in revenues this year, faces many of the same problems as Brazil at large.

With Rio suffering from violent crime, authorities have announced they will deploy thousands of police during carnival.

They are also facing an outbreak of mosquito-borne dengue fever, which has killed some 50 people. Rio declared a public-health emergency Monday, and organizers plan to distribute mosquito repellent at the Sambadrome.

<h2>Keeping the tradition alive&nbsp;</h2>

None of that is expected to break the magic of carnival, or hold back the samba schools -- institutions rooted in poor neighborhoods that revel in putting Rio's marginalized masses at the center of attention for two nights.

One is the iconic Mangueira, named for the "favela," or slum, where it was born 96 years ago, a stone's throw from the famed Maracana football stadium.

This year, the pink and green-sporting school will pay tribute to samba star Alcione to mark the 50th year of her career.

The multi-platinum singer co-founded Mangueira's youth program 36 years ago.

"It's very moving, because Alcione had a huge impact on our lives," says Mangueira native Barbara Rachel, who came up in the youth program herself and is today its cultural director.

"Not just my life, but the lives of an entire generation," says the 30-year-old, whose students will strut their stuff in their own parade when Rio holds its children's carnival Tuesday.

The next generation is set to keep the tradition alive. As Alcione sings in one of her best-known songs, "Don't Let the Samba Die."

There was no immediate word on when the 100-member chamber would consider final passage, as some senators said they expected to remain in session during the weekend if necessary.

"We are going to keep working on this bill until the job is done," Schumer said.

The Democratic-led Senate took up the security aid bill after Republicans on Wednesday blocked a broader measure that also included reforms of border security and immigration policy that a bipartisan group of senators had negotiated for months.

The security aid bill includes $61 billion for Ukraine as it battles a Russian invasion, $14 billion for Israel in its war against Hamas and $4.83 billion to support partners in the Indo-Pacific, including Taiwan, and deter aggression by China.

It also would provide $9.15 billion in humanitarian assistance to civilians in Gaza and the West Bank, Ukraine and other populations in conflict zones around the globe.

The Senate is expected to take days to agree on a final version of the security aid package, with some Republicans continuing to push for amendments. Supporters of Ukraine have been struggling for much of the past year to find a way to send more money to help Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's government.

Even if the aid bill eventually passes the Senate, it faces uncertainty in the House of Representatives. Dozens of Republican House members, particularly those most closely allied with former President Donald Trump, have voted against Ukraine aid, including Speaker Mike Johnson.

While lawmakers have approved more than $110 billion for Ukraine since Russia invaded in February 2022, Congress has not passed any major aid for Kyiv since Republicans took control of the House in January 2023.

Speaking on the Gaza war, he referred to Egyptian leader Abdel Fattah El-Sisi as the “president of Mexico.”

“I think as you know initially, the president of Mexico, El-Sisi, did not want to open up the gate to humanitarian material to get in. I talked to him. I convinced him to open the gate,” Biden said.

Earlier, Biden reacted strongly after a Special Counsel report on his handling of classified documents allegedly&nbsp;raised questions on his memory and pointed out that&nbsp;he struggled to recall when his son died.&nbsp;

While confronting these claims that emerged out of the much-anticipated report, Biden expressed outrage at such suggestions.

"There's even a reference that I don't remember when my son died. How in the hell dare he raise that?"&nbsp;

"My memory is fine...Take a look at what I've done since I became president," he added.&nbsp;

These comments came during a surprise news briefing on Thursday (Feb 8), where he also criticised Israel over the Gaza war. 
 
After Special Counsel Robert Hur decided to not impose charges on Biden about the classified documents case, the US president expressed satisfaction.

"I knew they would be reached all along."

He also recollected his full cooperation with the investigation as he recounted sitting for extensive interviews.&nbsp;
