The deadly H5N1 bird flu virus has spread more aggressively than ever before in wild birds and marine mammals since arriving in South America in 2022, raising the risk of it evolving into a bigger threat to humans, according to interviews with eight scientists.

"It's almost certainly happened," said Richard Webby, a virologist at St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. "It's pretty hard to explain some of these large infections and die off without having mammal-to-mammal spread."

The strain has shown up in dozens of bird species, including some migrating species, which can spread it beyond the region, scientists told Reuters.

As climate change escalates, animals will be forced to move into new territories, mixing with one another in new ways and possibly boosting opportunities for the virus to further mutate.&nbsp;

"It's a matter of time before you will detect the first South American strain in North America," said Alonzo Alfaro-Nunez, a viral ecologist at University of Copenhagen.

HUMAN RISK

The growing concern has prompted the 35 countries in the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) to convene regional health experts and officials at a meeting this week in Rio de Janeiro.

The group plans to launch the world's first regional commission to oversee bird flu monitoring and response efforts, a PAHO official told Reuters. This has not been previously reported.

Since the virus was first detected in Colombia in October 2022, there have been two known cases in humans on the continent, one each in Ecuador and Chile. Both came from exposure to infected birds.&nbsp;

While those patients survived, H5N1 bird flu is deadly to humans in roughly 60% of cases worldwide.&nbsp;

The World Health Organization is unlikely to raise the risk level for humans from the current "low" without evidence of human-to-human transmission or mutations adapted to human receptors, experts said.&nbsp;

Drugmakers, including GSK and Moderna, have said they are developing bird flu vaccines for humans, and have the capacity to produce hundreds of million so doses within months utilizing production lines used for seasonal flu vaccines.

"We're seeing (the virus) doing little evolutionary steps that are on the long-term moving towards a potential human infection," said Ralph Vanstreels, a University of California, Davis researcher studying South American variants of H5N1.

Every year, Argentina's Peninsula Valdes on the windswept Atlantic coast teems with densely packed elephant seals rearing pups.&nbsp;

Last November, Vanstreels came across a grim scene: hundreds of dead and rotting pups on the beach. Researchers estimate 17,400 pups died, nearly all born to the colony that year.&nbsp;

For each of those pups to have been infected by birds is highly unlikely, scientists said. Pups usually have contact only with their mothers, leading scientists to suspect this is how it spread.&nbsp;

Vanstreels is part of a group of scientists working to trace the virus' genetic mutations in South America.

In a draft paper posted on the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, they analyzed samples from sea lions, seals and birds from up the coast from Peninsula Valdes. Comparing the genomes from these samples with those collected in North America in 2022 and Asia earlier, the team identified nine new mutations.

The same mutations were found in samples collected in 2022 and 2023 in Chile and Peru, which were also hit by mass mortality of sea lions and birds.&nbsp;

"This is the first time this virus is so adapted to wildlife," Vanstreels said. "Clearly something happened in Peru and in northern Chile where they acquired these new mutations."

In the draft paper, researchers noted that the same mutations were present in one of the continent's two human cases, a 53-year-old man who lived one block from the seashore where seabirds congregated.

Researchers said that case "highlights the potential threat posed by these viruses to public health."&nbsp;

REGIONAL RESPONSE

With health officials and experts meeting in Rio this week, Latin American countries will be pressed to boost disease surveillance in the wild.

The region's patchy data and limited resources has left scientists struggling to understand how the disease is spreading in the wild, with the number of cases likely much higher than reported. Some cases are not being sampled or lab-tested, scientists said.&nbsp;

Bolivia, for example, did not register a case in the wild last year, though the disease has been detected in surrounding countries, said Manuel Jose Sanchez Vazquez, epidemiology coordinator for PAHO's veterinary health center.

Managing the disease response can also be complex, Sanchez noted. Threats to humans are dealt with by public health officials, while threats to poultry or livestock fall to agriculture or veterinary authorities. In wild animals, the purview typically falls to environmental officials.&nbsp;

A woman in Georgia, United States died after getting stuck under a conveyor while trying to recover her AirPod, authorities said. The woman got caught in a chain which moved the conveyor.&nbsp;

According to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office's incident report, a witness told the investigators that 21-year-old line worker Alyssa Drinkard lost the AirPod below the conveyor while she was working at a plant for Club Car. The company produces golf carts and other vehicles.

When the woman tried to pick up her earbud from under the machine, she was caught in the chain which moved the conveyor, said the witness, as per&nbsp; reports.&nbsp;

The witness, her fellow worker Fae’Zsha Smith, said that the way in which Drinkard was pinned, he "was not able to get her out, so she called for maintenance to come and shut the machine down.

They began taking it apart once the machine was down and called 911," as per the report.

Drinkard was freed by the emergency personnel of Grovetown, “by cutting the metal frame from around the conveyor and pulling her out," stated the report.

When she was taken out of the machine, Drinkard still had a pulse and life-saving measures were performed on her by emergency personnel before she was hospitalised, as per the incident report.

The Augusta Press, in a statement, confirmed that a worker of Club Car sustained critical injuries in an accident which took place at its primary manufacturing facility.&nbsp;

“First responders were immediately notified, and we thank them for their quick response to provide medical care and transportation to the hospital where the worker unfortunately later passed away," said the company.

New Zealand's Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters underscored the need to give the current investigation some time before drawing conclusions about the claims made by the Canadian government against India regarding the death of India-designated terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

“As a trained lawyer, I look okay, so where’s the case? Where’s the evidence? Where’s the finding right here, right now? Well, there isn’t one,”&nbsp;Peters was quoted as saying by The Indian Express newspaper.

On being asked if New Zealand cleared its stance to India on the matter, he had said,&nbsp;“Well, I wasn’t here, it was handled by the previous government. But look, sometimes when you’re hearing Five-Eyes information, you’re hearing it and saying nothing. It is coming past you," he said.&nbsp;

"You don’t know the value or the quality of it, but you’re pleased to have it. You don’t know whether there is going to be substantial material value or nothing. But the very, very critical information that matters… This was mainly handled by the previous government."

Peters, who met with his Indian counterpart S Jaishankar in New Delhi affirmed that his visit to India played a significant role in taking the relationship between the two countries to the next level.

A UK court ruled on Thursday (March 14) that Australian computer scientist Craig Wright is not "Satoshi Nakamoto", the pseudonym used by the creator of the cryptocurrency bitcoin when it was first unveiled in 2008.

"Dr Wright is not the person who adopted or operated under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto... Dr Wright is not the person who created the Bitcoin system," High Court judge James Mellor said, calling the evidence "overwhelming".

It may be noted that over the years, Craig Wright has claimed that he's the mysterious Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonym used by the author of the 2008 white paper behind Bitcoin.&nbsp;

However, he has failed to back his claims and people in the crypto world were not buying it.&nbsp;

A group called the Crypto Open Patent Alliance (Copa), with support from Jack Dorsey's company Block and Coinbase, took Wright to court. They wanted the judge to say that Wright is not Nakamoto officially.

Wright's claims and the widespread scepticism around them have led to several legal clashes.

Dutch politician Geert Wilders said on Wednesday he was ready to forego the job of prime minister in an effort to facilitate the formation of a new right-wing government, nearly four months after an election in which his party won most votes.

Wilders has been in talks with potential allies since the&nbsp;Nov. 22 election&nbsp;-- more than 100 days -- but they have borne no fruit. A negotiator appointed to assist in the process is due to report to parliament on his findings on Thursday.

"I can only become the prime minister if ALL the parties in the coalition supported it. That was not the case," Wilders said in a statement on social media platform X.

"I really want a right ( wing ) cabinet. Less asylum and immigration... Love for my country and the voters is big and more important than my own position."

Dutch national broadcaster NOS had earlier reported that Wilders was prepared to give up his hopes of becoming prime minister as he struggles to form a viable government.

Citing political sources in The Hague, NOS said Wilders' Freedom Party and three other conservative parties attempting to form a right-wing coalition were weighing a scenario in which the party leaders would remain in parliament and not join the new government.

In that scenario, known as an "extra-parliamentary" cabinet, politicians and experts not considered closely allied to any of the parties would be appointed to top government posts and work closely with parliament.

Wilders said on Feb. 14 he was willing to consider "all options" to form a government, a minority government or an "extraparliamentary" government, rather than call new elections.
