Ukraine-Russia war: Zelensky's border visit; Kyiv kills nuclear plant’s pro-Russian security chief

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Friday (Oct 4) that he had visited the Sumy region, where he met with troops engaged in an offensive in Russia's Kursk region.

"Today, I began my visit to the Sumy region with a meeting with our warriors—the guys who are fighting in the Kursk region, defending our border areas and the entire state. The 82nd Brigade. I received a report from the commander and presented awards to our soldiers," Zelensky said in a post on X.

"I am grateful for their service and for defending our country. I thank all the commanders, sergeants, and soldiers for the Kursk operation, which has greatly helped us in motivating those who supply us with weapons support packages," he added.

A video released by Ukraine showed Zelensky giving out awards to the soldiers, alongside Oleksandr Syrsky, the army's commander-in-chief, inside an underground shelter. He reiterated his thanks to the troops fighting in Kursk, adding that their efforts had "greatly motivated those providing us with weapons support packages," said the Ukrainian president.

Meanwhile, on Friday, Ukraine's military intelligence agency (GUR) claimed responsibility for the death of the head of security at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, describing him as a “collaborator" with Russia. The GUR shared a video on Telegram showing an SUV exploding.

Later, Russia's Investigative Committee confirmed that Andrei Korotkiy was killed when his vehicle blew up near his home in Enerhodar, the town where the nuclear plant is situated.

The GUR accusedKorotkiy, a Ukrainian citizen, of "voluntarily collaborating" with Russian forces after they took over the plant in the early stages of the conflict in 2022.

They further alleged that he had provided Russian forces with the personal information of employees at the plant, particularly those with "pro-Ukrainian views," and had organised events to support the "occupation."

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Europe's largest, has been under Russian control since March 2022.
