Some animals have an incredible ability to sleep with their eyes open due to unihemispheric slow-wave sleep (USWS); where one half of the brain can rest while the other half remains alert to watch out for predators. Here are five animals who sleep in this unique way:

Dolphins are social and intelligent aquatic mammals that can sleep with one eye open, to stay alert in case of an attack by a predator.

Owls are nocturnal birds who stay awake during the night and sleep during the day. They often sleep with their eyes open to not only watch out for any threats but also look for prey.

Some penguins who live in an environment with constant threats and need to stay vigilant do so by keeping their eyes partially open when they sleep.

Instead of eyelids, snakes have a thin, transparent membrane that protects their eyes from dust, sand, and other particles. Therefore, they can’t close their eyes even while sleeping.

Some rabbits can also sleep with their eyes open. This helps them to be alert and watch out for predators even when they are sleeping. Sometimes pet rabbits also sleep with their open eyes.

Can Drinking Water Increase Blood Pressure?

Drinking water may not necessarily increase your blood pressure. However, dehydration may result in changes in the blood pressure.

Our blood is made up of 90% water. Drinking less water may result in lowering the blood volume causing low blood pressure. This may also cause a lack of nutrients and oxygen in your organs resulting in a shock.

Dehydration can also lead to high blood pressure due to the hormone vasopressin. When the fluid level in the blood reduces, vasopressin may cause blood vessels to shrink and raise the blood pressure.

Although drinking water is not a treatment for low or high blood pressure, chronic dehydration can make things significantly worse. Therefore, it is important to drink plenty of water.

The water intake required by an individual may differ depending on a lot of factors. However, the National Institute of Sciences of the US recommends males consume 2.7 litres or about 91 ounces and females consume 3.7 litres or about 125 ounces on average.

Drinking enough water has many other health benefits as well such as improving digestion, maintaining electrolytes, removing toxins from the body, transporting and absorbing nutrients, etc.

For maintaining blood pressure, it is important to have a healthy diet and lifestyle. For high blood pressure, it is recommended to avoid caffeine and alcohol. Physical exercise and getting proper sleep can also help in maintaining blood pressure.

5 Effective Tips to Eliminate Dark Circles

Genetics, dehydration, lack of sleep and other factors can contribute to dark circles under the eyes. Here are five effective tips to reduce dark circles and achieve a refreshed look.

Sleep deprivation can exacerbate the look of dark circles, so getting adequate sleep is essential. To help your body heal and regenerate, try to get between seven to nine hours of sleep every night.

Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your body and skin well-hydrated. Proper hydration helps maintain skin elasticity and reduces the prominence of dark circles.

Cool cucumber slices or a cold compress near your eyes will help constrict blood vessels, minimise puffiness and lessen dark circles. This can work especially well, right after you wake up in the morning.

Use retinol, hyaluronic acid and vitamin C-containing eye creams or serums. Using products with these components over time can help eliminate dark circles, enhance the texture of the skin and brighten the under-eye area.

Dark circles can be lessened by eating a balanced diet high in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, as it promotes skin health and reduces inflammation. Berries, leafy greens, nuts and fish are some examples of foods that are good for you in this context.
