Venezuela conducts 'Caribe Soberano 200' military drills

Venezuela’s Armed Forces staged a major show of military force on Thursday as part of the Sovereign Caribbean 200 Campaign, in direct response to the presence of U.S. warships near its coastline. The exercises, held near La Orchila Island—home to the Antonio Díaz Naval Air Base—included 12 warships, 22 aircraft, tanks, helicopters, amphibious vehicles, and around 2,300 troops. President Nicolás Maduro and Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López described the drills as a necessary reaction to what they view as "aggressive" U.S. maneuvers in the region. The U.S., however, claims its naval presence is part of ongoing anti-narcotics operations.
