EU Charges Meta Over Child Safety Failures: Faces 6% Global Revenue Fine

The European Commission has formally charged Meta under the Digital Services Act for failing to protect children on its platforms.
Regulators found that age-verification systems on Instagram and Facebook are ineffective, allowing users under 13 to bypass restrictions simply by entering false birth dates. Reporting tools were also flagged as overly complex, sometimes requiring multiple steps to flag underage users.
Meta could now face fines of up to 6% of its global turnover, marking one of the most significant enforcement actions under the EU’s sweeping tech rules.
