GoDaddy, the largest internet domain management company in the world, on Friday, issued an apology to its employees that&nbsp;after an email that promised them&nbsp;a Christmas bonus in the midst of the economic crisis turned out to be a computer security test.

The Arizona-based company said&nbsp;"GoDaddy takes the security of our platform extremely seriously. We understand some employees were upset by the phishing attempt and felt it was insensitive, for which we have apologised."

A spokesman for GoDaddy&nbsp;added, "While the test mimicked real attempts in play today, we need to do better and be more sensitive to our employees."

In December, around 500 employees of GoDaddy clicked on an email from the company offering a Christmas bonus of $650 and asking them to fill out a form with their personal details.

Two days later, a different message appeared in their inboxes.

"You are receiving this email because you failed our recent phishing test," the email from GoDaddy's security chief read, according to Arizona's Copper Courier newspaper.

The technique of phishing, widely used by computer hackers, sees emails pretending to be a person known to the intended target, with the objective of obtaining information to infiltrate their computer systems.

The test email sparked uproar on social media as millions of Americans have been hit hard by the economic crisis linked to the coronavirus pandemic.

Apple is working hard to kick start its self-driving car technology, with a target of 2024 to produce a passenger vehicle.&nbsp;

Reuters reported that the vehicle would possibly include its own battery technology. Known as “Project Titan”, Apple’s efforts didn’t take off as expected when the company first announced plans to design its own vehicle from scratch in 2014.

Josh, an Indian short video-sharing app like TikTok&nbsp;has raised more than $100 million from investors including Alphabet Inc's Google and Microsoft, months after the Chinese app&nbsp;was banned in the country.

Josh is one of a few local short-video stages that have jumped up since India hindered the uncontrollably mainstream TikTok in June in the midst of an outskirt emergency with China, pulling in worldwide financial specialist interest in applications filling the gap.

Bengaluru-based VerSe Innovation, which owns&nbsp;Josh, is valued at more than $1 billion following the investment, it said in a statement.&nbsp;Josh has crossed 50 million downloads on the Google Play store.&nbsp;

AlphaWave, a part of global asset manager Falcon Edge Capital, also invested in VerSe, as did existing investors Sofina Group and Lupa Systems, VerSe said, adding that it would use the funds to scale up&nbsp;Josh.

Google said the speculation is essential for its $10 billion (generally Rs. 73,900 crores) Google for India Digitisation Fund made to quicken India's computerised economy.&nbsp;

"At the point when we shared subtleties of the India Digitization Fund in July this year, we distinguished empowering reasonable access and data for each Indian in their own language, regardless of whether it's Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Gujarati, and more as a critical column to drive forward India's digitisation," Google said in a blog entry.&nbsp;

VerSe also owns the news and content platform Dailyhunt, which offers content in multiple Indian languages.

In September, Indian content-sharing platform ShareChat raised $40 million from investors including Twitter Inc and Lightspeed Ventures, in an effort to drive growth for its new short-video app Moj.

Both&nbsp;Josh&nbsp;and Moj have been installed on more than 50 million devices each, according to data from Google's Play Store.

Separately on Tuesday, Indian ad technology firm InMobi's Glance - which runs an eponymous lock-screen content app and short-video platform Roposo - said it had raised $145 million from Google and existing investor Mithril Capital.

Google set aside $10 billion earlier this year for digital investments in India.

It has somewhat become a ritual in foreign space agencies to carry the names of common people on-board satellites that are undertaking ambitious missions. Now, this trend is being kickstarted in India, by Chennai-based SpaceKidz, that will be launching their SD Sat (an experimental communication satellite)&nbsp;on-board ISRO’s PSLV-C51 rocket in early 2021.&nbsp;

Satish Dhawan Satellite (SD Sat) is a 30x10x10cm cuboid, which is being launched into orbit to study space radiation, the magnetosphere and most importantly to demonstrate the indigenously designed and developed nanosatellite components, in line with Indian government's Aatmanirbhar Bharat (Self-reliant India) policy. The satellite is named after Prof. Satish Dhawan, a former ISRO chairman and among the pioneers of space technology in India.&nbsp;

This miniature spacecraft would also test the capabilities of LoRa (Long range) technology in space which could be helpful for many applications in the future in short and M2M (machine-to-machine) communication. LoRa is a long-range, low-power wireless radio frequency technology that has become a common platform for the Internet of Things (IoT) networks worldwide.&nbsp;

According to Dr. Srimathy Kesan, Founder and CEO of SpaceKidz India, this satellite is their most ambitious yet and the first one that would have propulsion of its own. It is important to note that SpaceKidz earlier satellites were maintained in orbit on board PS4 (final and fourth stage) of the PSLV rocket for up to 6 months after launch. But SD Sat would fly on its own like the larger satellites and is expected to have a mission life of two years.&nbsp;

While their satellite would be primarily using Frequency-shift keying (FSK) to transmit data back to earth, LoRa would be the secondary. Experimenting with LoRa would help them study the feasibility of using LoRa in ground communications for industrial purposes.&nbsp;

“SD Sat (30x10x10cm)is a significant step for our 10-member team of college students, because so far we’ve only done 10cm cubes. The satellite fabrication is underway and it will be handed over to ISRO within three weeks from now. The important aspect of this mission is to establish communication with the satellite from our ground station in Chennai” she told Zee Media.

When asked about the idea of sending names of common people to space, she said it was an initiative to create awareness, generate curiosity and to get more people fascinated about space science, which many still perceive as inaccessible.&nbsp;

“We’ve shared a link on our website where people can enter their names (by Jan 3rd), we’ll compile the list and put the names on a memory card that’ll be on-board the satellite. Everyone who registered their name will get a boarding pass”, she added.&nbsp;

As a goodwill gesture, SpaceKidz team had also shared a similar boarding pass with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi when they had virtually interacted with him the previous week.&nbsp;

Lawmakers in the US are expected to back $1.9 billion in a bid to kick start a programme which would remove a lot of telecom network equipment from the country.&nbsp;

On Sunday, Reuters reported that the government will replace infrastructure which it feels poses risks to American national sovereignty. This will be provisioned along with the year-end spending bill, and a COVID-19 bill.

Since then, US firms have been disallowed from purchasing Chinese equipment.

Earlier in December, the FCC has finalised rules that require carriers with Huawei and/or ZTE equipment to “rip and replace” all paraphernalia in place, but no funding from US Congress has been green lit so far.

Huawei has responded to the decision, saying it was disappointed in the decision “to force removal of our products from telecommunications networks. This overreach puts US citizens at risk in the largely underserved rural areas – during a pandemic - when reliable communication is essential."

A source told Reuters that the bill "establishes a temporary, emergency broadband benefit program at the FCC to help low-income Americans, including those economically challenged by the COVID-19 pandemic, get connected or remain connected to broadband”.

The question that is in the minds of all the gamers in India is whether <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/pubg">PUBG Mobile </a>India will be launched and if yes, then when?&nbsp;

Last week, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology in its response said that the Indian government does not grant permission for the launch of apps and websites. Now reports suggest that <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/pubg-mobile">PUBG's </a>India version will not be released in Google Play Store and Apple App Store until March next year.&nbsp;

<h2>Here's a look at what we know so far.</h2>

India in early September banned over 200 Chinese apps, including PUBG, blaming them for being engaged in activities "prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order". The move was taken following India's tense standoff with China at the border, which led to the killings of 20 Indian soldiers at the Galwan Valley in Ladakh.&nbsp;

UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock&nbsp;has stressed there is no evidence to suggest the new strain is more likely to cause serious disease.

''There are many variants. It just happens that this one has quite a few more mutations than some of the other variants, so that’s the reason why we’ve taken it particularly seriously,''&nbsp;explained Professor Chris Whitty, England’s Chief Medical Officer.

''But there’s nothing to suggest that the symptoms are different, that the testing is different, or that the clinical outcome is different for this variant.''

The new strain first occurred in September in South East London and by November, it accounted for 28 per cent of all new Covid infections in the capital, rising to 62 per cent by December 9.

According to the WHO, apart from the UK, nine cases of the new strain have been reported in Denmark, as well as one case in the Netherlands and another in Australia.

WHO has also advised all its members in Europe to step up measures against coronavirus.&nbsp;

Data is the new gold has become a common phrase these days. Turns out, a few researchers at the International Monetary Fund agree.

Mega companies are now under radar for how they use user data. &nbsp;In a blog post for the IMF, four researchers put forward findings from a paper in the works which looks at the relationship between finance and tech, and how it is expected to grow.

Prepare yourself! The researchers claimed that one’s browsing history, purchase history, and search patterns should be used to decide the credit score of every user. They believe this would determine a way more accurate credit rating than it does right now.

They also ascertained that such a model would allow greater lending for borrowers which would have been denied for other reasons by traditional banks.

Fortunately, they don’t have sinister ideas in their minds, but simply believe that banking system as it exists right now faces a serious threat from tech companies like Facebook, Google, and Apple. These companies are facing more scrutiny across the globe for they use our data.

Researchers found that such companies have a lot more access to soft-information, and that message based platforms could replace physical banks.

The researchers did mention the privacy and policy shortcomings and worries that are part of such kind of policies. The study is still in its pilot phases, and perhaps soon, the researchers could pinpoint to a mechanism which would make this possible. Until then, fear not, and browse away!

Facebook has taken down content that spread lies in Israel against coronavirus vaccinations as the government seeks to drum up support for the programme, the Justice Ministry said on Sunday.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday became the first person to be vaccinated in Israel. Opinion polls show some two-thirds of the public want to follow suit.

The Justice Ministry said that, at its request, Facebook took down four groups at the weekend that had disseminated texts, photographs and videos with "deliberately mendacious content designed to mislead about coronavirus vaccines".

Such "fake news" included arguments that vaccines would be used to plant government tracking chips in recipients` bodies, to poison them and thus cull the population or to subject them to medical experimentation, the ministry said in a statement.

A Facebook spokeswoman confirmed that four Hebrew-language groups had been taken down as part of the company`s policy against "spreading misinformation regarding the vaccines".

Israeli officials say the country has enough vaccines on order by year`s end to protect the most vulnerable 20% of the population and then lift some coronavirus curbs, but worry that turnout might be dampened if people get false information about the innoculations.

Israel began administering vaccines to medical staff on Sunday. At Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center, dozens of doctors and nurses danced as they prepared to receive their injections.

Next in line are elderly Israelis or those in high-risk groups. The wider adult population is slated to get shots in early 2021.

With a population of 9 million, Israel has logged 373,368 coronavirus cases and 3,074 deaths. It has imposed two national lockdowns and is mulling new curbs on high-contagion areas.

Twitter is experimenting with its latest - “Spaces”. Twitter Spaces is a Clubhouse-like voice-based chat room, and is being rolled out to a few users on the social networking website.

Last month, Twitter announced that it would start testing Spaces with its primary group of subjects - primarily women and people from marginalised groups. Last week, Twitter had announced the first “Spaces” would work among its first subjects, who will essentially function as a feedback group on Twitter DMs.

Twitter has faced years of calls from misinformation researchers to disclose more information about bots, which have been used to amplify influence operations and make certain narratives appear more popular on its site.

It started requiring developers to identify automated accounts as bots in March, but resisted pressure to apply a designated label, saying as recently as May that "calls for bot labeling don't capture the problem we're trying to solve."

A coalition of 38 states filed an antitrust lawsuit against Google Thursday focusing on the design of the tech giant’s search engine. It’s the third major antitrust lawsuit filed against the search giant this year.

According to a statement from the New York attorney general's office, the states are asking the court to stop Google's illegal conduct and "restore a competitive marketplace."

"Google sits at the crossroads of so many areas of our digital economy and has used its dominance to illegally squash competitors, monitor nearly every aspect of our digital lives, and profit to the tune of billions," said New York Democratic Attorney General Letitia James.

Google responded to the new lawsuit, saying while scrutiny of big companies is important, it seeks to redesign Search in ways that would deprive Americans of helpful information and hurt businesses` ability to connect directly with customers.

"We look forward to making that case in court, while remaining focused on delivering a high-quality search experience for our users," said Adam Cohen, Director, Economic Policy at Google.

This is the third major antitrust lawsuit filed against the search giant this year.

Texas and nine other US states on Wednesday filed an antitrust lawsuit against Google, accusing it of monopolising or attempting to monopolise products and services used by advertisers and publishers in online-display advertising.

The lawsuit, filed in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, alleges that Google entered into an anti-competitive agreement with Facebook to boost its online advertising business.

The US Justice Department also filed its own lawsuit against Google in October, along with 11 Republican state attorneys general, focusing on Google`s exclusive contracts with Android smartphone manufacturers and Apple to set its own search engine as the default option on these devices.

Google vehemently defended its position. Claiming that the lawsuit relies on dubious antitrust arguments, the company said that like countless other businesses, it pays to promote its services.

For digital services, when you first buy a device, it has a kind of home screen "eye-level shelf.

"On mobile, that shelf is controlled by Apple, as well as companies like AT&amp;T, Verizon, Samsung and LG. On desktop computers that shelf space is overwhelmingly controlled by Microsoft," argued Kent Walker, SVP of Global Affairs at Google.

Google accused of search manipulation in third major antitrust lawsuit

Twitter Inc has reversed changes made to its retweet function intended to curb the spread of misinformation during the US presidential election.

It said it will no longer prompt quote tweets from the retweet icon. "Retweet functionality will be returning to the way it was before," the company said in a statement on Wednesday.

The microblogging site had in October made it difficult for users to retweet a tweet with misinformation and promoted the use of quote tweets, which included commentary from the user.

It had also imposed curbs including labelling and removal of tweets calling for people to interfere with the election process or implementation of results.

Popular online bulletin board Pinterest will pay former chief operating officer Francoise Brougher $20 million in a deal reached to settle a gender discrimination suit, a regulatory filing showed Monday.

The settlement includes Pinterest investing another $2.5 million to increase the presence of women and other under-represented groups in the tech industry, according to a joint statement.

"Pinterest recognizes the importance of fostering a workplace environment that is diverse, equitable and inclusive and will continue its actions to improve its culture," read a joint statement by Brougher and Pinterest.

Brougher filed a lawsuit earlier this year, accusing San Francisco-based Pinterest of paying her less than male colleagues, leaving her out of decision making, and subjecting her to a hostile work environment, then firing her after she spoke out against the treatment, according to media reports.

"Although 70 percent of Pinterest’s users are women, the company is steered by men with little input from female executives," Brougher said in a post on Medium when the suit was filed in August.

"Pinterest’s female executives, even at the highest levels, are marginalized, excluded, and silenced."

More than 440 million people around the world use Pinterest each month, according to the online bulletin board's website.

"Women were the first to embrace us; they still make up more than 60 percent of our platform globally - and we're&nbsp;proud of it," Pinterest said in a blog post at the end of July.

Pinterest, launched in 2010, is a virtual bulletin board platform, with users decorating their boards with pictures showcasing interests including food, fashion, travel and lifestyle.

It also enables users to link to online shopping and other services to find items they have "pinned."

"I will continue to advocate for workplace equity, including more women in the C-Suite," Brougher said in a tweet from her verified account on Twitter.
