To do this, they have developed an AI-powered software.

<h2>Missing from pages of history</h2>

During the Second World War (1 Sept 1939–2 Sept 1945), more than six million Jews were murdered by the Nazis. Over the years, volunteers by scouring through statements and documents, checking film footage, cemeteries, and other records have managed to track down information on 4.9 million individuals. However, many remain missing from the pages of history.

Talking to Reuters, Esther Fuxbrumer, head of software development at the Yad Vashem World Holocaust Remembrance Centre, said there were huge gaps in their existing nine&nbsp;million records.&nbsp;

The Nazis "just took people, shot them, and covered them in a pit. And there was no one left to tell about them," remarked Fuxbrumer.

"It's very hard for a human being to do it - just to go over everything and not miss any details," she said.&nbsp;

Moreover, the volunteers have had to face the mammoth task of linking individuals to dates, family members and other details, watching for duplicates and comparing accounts.&nbsp;

To ease this strain, researchers have developed the AI system. Developed over the last two years, the system can sift through records in English, Hebrew, German, Russian and other languages. It is currently undergoing tests.

<h2>How capable is the AI?</h2>

The software has already proven its capabilities.&nbsp;

"That technology works very fast. It takes a few hours to go over hundreds of testimonies and it's very exact, the results," said Fuxbrumer.

"We saw that from each testimony we could get between six or seven names with full details that we could put automatically into our database, and around 10 per cent of the names that we found we had already in our database, but 90 per cent are new names that we didn't know about."

As part of the trials, the researchers are running tests on 400 of the 30,000 testimonies they have. Already, they have added 1,500 new names to their records, and as per Esther Fuxbrumer, many more were expected in the coming weeks&nbsp;when the system is used on all 30,000 testimonies. The next phase will cover diaries.

"We believe that way we'll be able to bring a lot of stories about a lot of victims that were killed, little kids that no one else knew, to tell us the story about what happened to them," stated the researcher.

"We wanted a French icon to play a French icon, but we didn't know how a French actor would react given France's mixed feelings about Chanel," said co-producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura. "It was very gratifying how quickly Juliette embraced it."

Dior, meanwhile, suffers through the trauma of his sister being taken to a concentration camp, but his "new look" designs come to symbolise France's sense of recovery and hope after the war.

"It's a very beautiful, ambitious series on fashion," said Pierre Groppo, head of lifestyle for Vanity Fair.

"It gives an image of Dior that we don't have. We picture him as a genius in his workshop. Many don't know this painful story that he, and many others, lived through," he told AFP.

Binoche's "subtle" performance was particularly gripping, he said.

Chanel "made decisions that were not always right, certainly, but don't forget this was a woman, alone, from a very modest background. We get the sense of someone overwhelmed by events.

"I look forward to a second season where we see her making her comeback."

Deep-sea explorers have found the long-lost shipwreck from World War II Japanese transport ship, the SS Montevideo Maru which was involved in Australia’s most deadly maritime disaster, said the team on Saturday (April 22). The transport ship carrying nearly 1,000 Australian prisoners of war and mostly soldiers, was unknowingly torpedoed by a United States submarine.

“The discovery of the Montevideo Maru closes a terrible chapter in Australian military and maritime history,” said John Mullen, director of the Silentworld Foundation, a maritime archaeology group. The ship was sunk on July 1, 1942, when it was en route to what is now Papua New Guinea to China’s Hainan off the coast of the Philippines.&nbsp;

Mullen added, “Families waited years for news of their missing loved ones, before learning of the tragic outcome of the sinking. Some never fully came to accept that their loved ones were among the victims.”

Notably, the location of the wreck had remained a mystery for over 80 years and was found at a depth of more than four kilometres, said the organisation. The foundation had spent at least five years planning the mission in collaboration with the Dutch deep-sea surveying company Fugro and the Australian Department of Defence.

The search went on for nearly 12 days and was conducted using an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) in the South China Sea. It was days later that the team detected a positive sighting using sonar at four kilometres which was a greater depth than the Titanic.&nbsp;

The sinking of the Japanese transport ship was one of the worst maritime disasters in Australia as the ship carrying over 1,000 passengers also comprised at least 979 Australian citizens including some 850 soldiers. Additionally, the ship was also carrying civilians from 13 other countries while the number of prisoners killed was about 1,060.

According to the foundation, the Montevideo Maru included 33 crew from the Norwegian freighter the Herstein and about 20 Japanese guards and crew who also lost their lives that day. They also believe that the ship was hit by two torpedoes as it had split into two sections, with the bow and stern lying about 500 metres apart on the seabed.&nbsp;

After the discovery, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese took to Twitter and wrote, “At long last, the resting place of the lost souls of the Montevideo Maru has been found. Among the 1,060 prisoners on board were 850 Australian service members – their lives cut short.”

He added, “The extraordinary effort behind this discovery speaks for the enduring truth of Australia’s solemn national promise to always remember and honour those who served our country. We hope today’s news brings a measure of comfort to loved ones who have kept a long vigil.”

Explorers find WWII shipwreck of SS Montevideo Maru on which nearly 1,000 Australians died

The remains of the USS Samuel B Roberts, a US navy destroyer escort sunk during World War II, were found by explorers below the Pacific Ocean, split in half and lodged on a slope.

Also known as the Sammy B, the world's deepest shipwreck was located on June 22 by Texan financer Victor Vescovo, an explorer who has previously completed expeditions to the world's deepest points.

It lies at a depth of 6,895 meters (22,621 feet) in the Philippine Sea. It was out of sight for nearly 80 years, until now.

&nbsp;The previous deepest wreck&nbsp;that was ever identified and discovered was the USS Johnston, found last year by Vescovo. It lies at 6,469 meters.

Samuel B. Roberts was a John C. Butler-class destroyer escort that was commissioned on April 28, 1944. It went down during the Battle of Samar in the Philippine Sea in October 1944.

The vessel is remembered for its heroic battle against three Japanese battleships, including the Yamato, said to be the largest ever constructed.

The US ship carried 224 crewmembers, 89 of whom were killed. Captain Robert W. Copeland was one of the survivors.

The ship "fought ferociously even though she was completely outclassed by the Japanese battleships and heavy cruisers she went up against," Vescovo told CNN.

"The heroism of her captain and crew is legendary in the Navy, and it was a great honor to find her final resting place. I think it helps bring closure to the story of the ship, for the families of those who were lost and those who served on her. I think that having a ship vanish into the depths, never to be seen again, can leave those affiliated with the ship feeling a sense of emptiness.”

"Finding the wrecks can help bring closure, and also bring details about the battle that perhaps we didn't know before. As we say, 'Steel doesn't lie.'"

The explorers also went lower to over 7,000 meters to look for one other vessel —a carrier, called Gambier Bay —but couldn’t find it. They didn't look for the other destroyer, USS Hoel, due to lack of data, reports CNN.

This is not the first time that such an incident has taken place. WWII bombs are regularly discovered during construction work in Germany. However, they are usually defused by experts.&nbsp;

Earlier, in October 2020, the biggest WWII bomb ever found in Poland exploded underwater while being defused by Polish sappers.&nbsp;

The bomb was found in the Piast Canal which connects the Baltic Sea with the Oder River, and was dropped by the RAF in 1945 in an attack on the German cruiser Lutzow.

The site is near the town of Swinoujscie in northwest Poland where a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal was opened in 2016.

Dubbed the "earthquake" bomb, the Tallboy bomb was used by Britain's Royal Air Force (RAF) and weighs nearly 5,400 kg, including 2,400 kg of explosive, the Navy said.&nbsp;

On D-Day, more than 150,000 Allied troops landed on the beaches code-named Omaha, Utah, Juno, Sword and Gold, carried by 7,000 boats.

This year on June 6, the beaches stood vast and empty as the sun rose, exactly 77 years since the dawn invasion. For the second year in a row, anniversary commemorations are marked by virus travel restrictions that have prevented veterans or families of fallen soldiers from the US, Britain, Canada and other Allied countries making the trip to France.

Only a few officials were allowed exceptions. Most public events have been cancelled, and the official ceremonies are limited to a small number of selected guests and dignitaries.

Denis van den Brink, a WWII expert working for the town of Carentan, site of a strategic battle near Utah Beach, acknowledged the 'big loss, the big absence is all the veterans who couldn't travel'.&nbsp;"That really hurts us very much because they are all around 95, 100 years old, and we hope they're going to last forever. But, you know..." he said.

"At least we remain in a certain spirit of commemoration, which is the most important," he said. Over the anniversary weekend, many local residents have come out to visit the monuments marking the key moments of the fight and show their gratitude to the soldiers.

Dozens of French World War II history enthusiasts, and a few travellers from neighbouring European countries, could also be seen in jeeps and military vehicles on the small roads of Normandy.

Some reenactors came to Omaha Beach in the early hours of the day to pay tribute to those who fell that day, bringing flowers and American flags.

On D-Day, 4,414 Allied troops lost their lives, 2,501 of them Americans. More than 5,000 were wounded. On the German side, several thousand were killed or wounded.

A few kilometers (miles) away from Omaha Beach, the British Normandy Memorial is to be inaugurated on Sunday outside the village of Ver-sur-Mer. Visitors stand in awe at the solemnity and serenity of the place providing a spectacular view over Gold Beach and the English Channel.

The monument, built under a project launched in 2016, pays tribute to those under British command who died on D-Day and during the Battle of Normandy. The names of more than 22,000 men and women, mostly British soldiers, are written on its stone columns.

Charles Shay, 96, a Penobscot Native American, who now lives in Normandy, is expected to be the only veteran present in person. The cemetery contains 9,380 graves, most of them for servicemen, who lost their lives in the D-Day landings and ensuing operations. Another 1,557 names are inscribed on the Walls of the Missing. A massive World War II bomb found in Germany's financial capital Frankfurt was safely detonated in the early hours of Thursday, the city's fire service said, allowing tens of thousands of evacuated residents to return to their homes.&nbsp;

President Vladimir Putin on Sunday vowed &nbsp;Russia will "firmly" defend national interests and denounced the return of "Russophobia", as the country marked the 76th anniversary of victory in World War II.&nbsp;

His speech to thousands of soldiers and veterans on Red Square came as recent tensions between Moscow and the West have recalled the Cold War over the conflict in Ukraine and a litany of spy scandals in Europe.

"The Soviet people kept their sacred oath, defended the homeland and freed the countries of Europe from the black plague," Putin told the crowd.

A survey this week by state-run pollster VTsIOM showed that 69 percent of Russians view Victory Day as the most important holiday on the calendar.

A third of respondents said they would take part in the celebrations, while a fifth said they would watch on television.

Two bomb disposal experts from Britain and Australia died in the Solomon Islands when World War II ordnance they were helping to clear exploded, officials said Monday.

Police said the blast took place on Sunday afternoon in the Pacific island nation's capital Honiara and the two foreign nationals died after being taken to hospital.

The charity Norwegian People's Aid (NPA), which is collating a database of unexploded ordnance in the Solomons, confirmed two of its workers were killed.

It named then as British citizen Stephen "Luke" Atkinson and Australian citizen Trent Lee.

"This is a tragic accident. So far, we know that there has been an explosion with fatal consequences," NPA said in a statement.

"Our main priority now is to offer assistance to relatives and colleagues, and to clarify what has happened."

NPA said its activities in the Solomons had been temporarily suspended while the "devastating" blast was investigated.

"The investigation needs to be completed before there can be a conclusion on the cause of events," it said.

The Solomons were the site of fierce fighting between Allied and Japanese forces in World War II and when the conflict ended they abandoned vast quantities of shells, landmines and other munitions.

NPA was working with Solomon Islands police to survey the scale of the problem and develop a nation-wide collection programme.

The charity said on its website that the Solomons remained heavily contaminated by unexploded munitions, which not only posed an explosion risk but had also often degraded after 75 years, leaching harmful chemicals into the environment.

"Munitions from the conflict continue to kill or seriously injure local people and are used for destructive fishing practices," it said.

"Explosive weapons are often found within city construction sites, coral reefs, farms, forests and suburban gardens where children sometimes find and play with them."

"We need to reduce bureaucracy and accelerate and simplify procedures, because if support is delayed again, many businesses will have no option but to stop," she said.

The government last week accused banks of not acting quickly enough, but they said that they had already passed on around 400,000 loan requests worth more than 18 billion euros ($20 billion) to the state-backed Central Guarantee Fund.

Italy was the first European country to be hit by the pandemic and imposed a strict two-month lockdown which paralysed much of the country's economic activity.

As a result, the country is set for a drop in GDP of between nine and 13 percent, the Bank of Italy said on Friday.

Data also showed that the economy shrank 5.3 percent in the first quarter - worse than the 4.7 percent initially estimated.

It had not seen such an "exceptional" decline in the first quarter since 1995, ISTAT said.

This year's losses could amount to 170 billion euros, equivalent to the GDP of Veneto, Italy's third biggest industrial region, a Mediobanca study said.

The head of the country's main business confederation Cofindustria, Carlo Bonomi, said that up to a million jobs could be threatened nationwide.

"We're waiting for figures at the end of May but indications are that between 700,000 and a million jobs are in danger," he said.

"Jobs are only created if there is growth, innovation, investment. The car manufacturing crisis can't be solved with subsidies or furloughing. You solve it by looking to the future, by investing in new technologies," he said.

Italy is set to be the main beneficiary of a European Union 750-billion-euro recovery plan but it still may not be enough.

They include Eleonora Fogliacco, 35, a fitness and swimming teacher in Lombardy, the hardest hit region where gyms were ordered closed at the end of February.

"I didn't qualify for the 600-euro monthly government handout because I earned more than 10,000 euros last year," she told AFP.

"During the crisis I had peaceful days and days when I felt completely lost, without any state help. I could no longer see the future and I didn't know what to hold onto," she said.

"I don't buy anything. I depend on my partner for the shopping," said Fogliacco.

"This situation has changed everybody's way of life (and) everything will be very complicated" in the future, she added.

According to a Confcommercio-Censis poll published on Tuesday, 53 percent of Italian families see their future negatively and 68 percent see the country's future negatively.

Because of lockdown, 42 percent of families have had to reduce their work and income, 26 percent have stopped work and 24 percent have been furloughed.
