In spite of its end-to-end encryption and other security features, WhatsApp accounts can be hacked. Cybercriminals employ a variety of methods like social engineering, telecom fraud, and malware to target individual users rather than the app itself. They find loopholes in phone carrier systems and device vulnerabilities to hijack accounts. Compromised accounts are used to access private messages, impersonate users to scam contacts and extort money, and even to spread malware. Users in India are particularly vulnerable due to the enormous user base of more than 500 million and the prevalent use of mobile phone numbers for banking and UPI transactions. Here is what you should know to keep your WhatsApp account safe:
SIM Swapping or Port-Out Fraud
One of the most common methods worldwide, SIM swapping involves attackers impersonating victims to telecom providers, tricking or bribing staff, or using forged documents to transfer the victim’s phone number to a new SIM card. This gives them control over the number. The attackers receive all SMS and voice verification codes for WhatsApp and other services. This is highly prevalent in India, particularly in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Pune, and Mumbai. This method has been used for large-scale banking and UPI fraud. This form of attack has also been reported in the US and UK, often linked to crypto theft and financial scams. How to stay safe: Set a SIM card PIN or port-out password with your carrier. Monitor for unexpected service loss. Where available, request a “port freeze” protection.
Verification Code Phishing Through Social Engineering
Attackers trick users into sharing the SMS verification codes sent by WhatsApp during login attempts. They impersonate friends, family, WhatsApp support, or banks using urgent or emotional appeals. This fraud is common in India. Once attackers gain access to users' contact lists, they launch chain scams that often demand money from the users’ contacts. In the UK and Europe, a so-called “Hi Mum” scam led to over £1.5 million in losses, where attackers posed as family members in distress. How to stay safe: Never share verification codes with anyone. Enable WhatsApp two-step verification by following this path: Settings > Account > Two-step verification.
Call Forwarding Exploitation
In this fraud, scammers trick victims into dialling codes like `21` followed by the attacker’s number under false pretences, such as delivery verification. This enables call forwarding, including WhatsApp voice verification calls, to the attacker. In India, such cases have been reported in Pune, Mumbai, and Delhi-NCR. Similar schemes were reported in the US and EU.How to stay safe: Check your call forwarding status using `*#21#` and disable forwarding with `##21#`. Avoid dialling unsolicited codes.
QR Code Phishing or 'Quishing' for WhatsApp Web
Hackers send fake QR links leading to malicious websites. Once the victim scans them, the attacker can access the user’s WhatsApp Web session. This fraud has been reported in Indian tech hubs like Bengaluru, and has been linked to job scams. In the US and Europe, users have been tricked with meeting invites or fake links. How to stay safe: Only scan QR codes from the official WhatsApp Web site (web.whatsapp.com). Regularly check and log out from unknown devices under Linked Devices in Settings.
Malware and Spyware Infection
Malicious apps, trojans, or advanced spyware like Pegasus and Paragon installed on the victim’s phone can steal WhatsApp messages, verification codes, or control the device remotely. There were more than 90 reported spyware infection cases in 2025, targeting journalists and activists. Globally, such spyware campaigns and ransomware attacks have been reported in Europe and the US.How to stay safe: Avoid installing apps from unknown sources. Keep your operating system and WhatsApp updated, and use reputable antivirus software.
Voicemail Hacking
When WhatsApp verification calls are missed, the code might be left in voicemail. Attackers who hack voicemail systems with default or weak PINs can retrieve these codes. This crime has been reported in rural areas of India like Banda district in Uttar Pradesh, as well as in countries like the UK and Switzerland. How to stay safe: Set strong voicemail PINs. Regularly check for unauthorised access to voicemail. Also read: Meta to allow WhatsApp users to share status updates on Instagram, Facebook
Linked Platform Exploits Such as Facebook Impersonation
Hackers have compromised linked accounts from Meta (which owns WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram) to phish WhatsApp codes or send malicious group invites. This is often used for crypto extortion. In India, Kolkata has reported such scams. Similar impersonation was reported from Singapore. How to stay safe: Secure your linked accounts in the Meta ecosystem with strong passwords and two-factor authentication. Avoid suspicious invites.
Physical Access or Device Cloning
Fraudsters can use stolen or lost phones to restore backups or clone SIM cards, gaining access to WhatsApp data. This is common in urban thefts in India’s Mumbai and Delhi. Travel scams have been reported across the world using such device cloning techniques. How to stay safe: Use biometric locks such as fingerprints, and strong PINs. Enable remote logout from WhatsApp Web sessions.
Account Takeover via Cloud Backups
Attackers can exploit vulnerabilities in cloud backups on Google Drive or iCloud. Russia has announced restrictions on voice calls made through the popular messaging apps WhatsApp and Telegram, a move seen as part of its broader effort to tighten control over the internet. The ban is expected to impact WhatsApp’s estimated 96 million monthly users and Telegram’s 89 million users in Russia, according to data from Mediascope. Russian President Vladimir Putin has long pushed for ‘digital sovereignty’ and Russia said that this move is to ‘combat criminals.’
Real reason behind the move
The country's internet regulator, Roskomnadzor, claimed the restriction is aimed at curbing crime and protecting national security. In a statement, the agency accused both platforms of being commonly used for scams, extortion, and activities linked to sabotage and terrorism. It stated that requests for cooperation and data access from Russian law enforcement had been ignored by the companies. "In order to combat criminals, measures are being taken to partially restrict calls on these foreign messaging apps (WhatsApp and Telegram)," communications watchdog Roskomnadzor said, as quoted by the RIA and TASS news agencies. Roskomnadzor also added that access to voice calls would be restored only if the platforms comply with Russian legal requirements, particularly by providing law enforcement access to user data. Although the authorities specified voice calls were restricted, users have also reported issues with video calls. This latest action follows a pattern of increasing digital censorship in Russia since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Authorities claim Ukraine has used Telegram to recruit individuals and coordinate sabotage operations inside Russia. The government has also introduced stricter laws on online content and is promoting the development of a domestic messaging platform called "Max," which critics say could facilitate state surveillance.
What did WhatsApp say in response?
In response, WhatsApp stated that its end-to-end encryption resists government attempts to undermine secure communication, which is why it is being targeted. Telegram, meanwhile, said it actively removes harmful content and combats misuse, including fraud and calls for violence. Despite being created by Russian entrepreneur Pavel Durov, Telegram has faced criticism for not doing enough to control criminal activity on its platform. “WhatsApp is private, end-to-end encrypted, and defies government attempts to violate people’s right to secure communication, which is why Russia is trying to block it from over 100 million Russian people,” WhatsApp said in a statement reported by Reuters.

Russia has restricted voice calls on WhatsApp and Telegram, citing national security and crime concerns. The move affects over 180 million users. WhatsApp called it an attack on secure communication, while Telegram said it removes harmful content.

Russia restricts calls on WhatsApp, Telegram 'to promote digital sovereignty': Here's REAL reason behind the move

Russian President Vladimir Putin has instructed his government to come up with new rules limiting the use of foreign messaging apps and software. The order targets platforms from what Moscow calls “unfriendly countries”, according to a report by Ukraine’s Foreign Intelligence Service on 20 July. The Kremlin published the directive earlier this week as part of its wider effort to reduce Russia’s reliance on technology developed in the West. Also read: Zelensky ready for direct talks with Putin? The messaging app, owned by Meta, is one of the few services from the company still working in Russia. Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram, Threads and WhatsApp, was declared an “extremist organisation” by Russian authorities back in 2022. While the other platforms have already been blocked, WhatsApp has so far escaped the crackdown. Last year, Russian Senator Artem Sheikin said WhatsApp could face a ban in 2025 if it doesn’t follow Russian laws.
What about Telegram?
The status of Telegram, a messaging app created by Russian-born entrepreneur Pavel Durov, is less clear. Ukrainian intelligence says it’s unsure what will happen to the app, even though it has close ties to Russian users. Telegram insists it is independent from the Russian government or any security services. But several investigative reports have raised concerns about possible links.
What is Max, Russia’s replacement for WhatsApp?
Russian authorities have introduced a new messaging app called Max, developed by VK, the tech company behind the Russian social media site Vkontakte. According to Ukrainian intelligence, all Russian officials have now been ordered to switch to Max. The app reportedly has full access to the user’s microphone, camera, contacts, files, and location. The collected data is said to be sent to servers connected to VK, which is now largely controlled by the Russian government. VK itself was originally launched by Durov in 2006, before he left Russia and lost control of the company.

Is Russia about to ban WhatsApp? Putin orders crackdown on social media apps from 'unfriendly countries'

A Russian lawmaker, who regulates the IT sector, on Friday (July 18) warned that WhatsApp should prepare to leave the Russian market, stressing that the messaging app is expected to be put on a list of restricted software, according to a Reuters report. The lawmaker said that the presence of WhatsApp in Russia’s digital space is a security threat in the country, and soon the app will be blacklisted.Anton Nemkin, member of the Russian State Duma Committee on Information Policy, IT and Communications, stressed that the fate of WhatsApp in Russia is “sealed”.“This messenger is owned by Meta, an organization recognized as extremist and outlawed in our country. The presence of such a service in Russia's digital space is, in fact, a legal breach in national security. That is why including WhatsApp in the list of programs from unfriendly jurisdictions subject to restrictions is just a matter of time,” she added.Nemkin said that the Russian authorities “cannot turn a blind eye” to the fact that millions of Russians transmit their data, documents, photos, and personal correspondence every day via a platform controlled by a hostile entity that ignores Russian laws.WhatsApp has not done anything the Russian government has asked, she further stressed, adding that it has not localised data, opened a representative office, or shown any transparency."This is unacceptable at a time when digital sovereignty is a matter of national security,” Nemkin said.Meanwhile, as an alternative, the Russians will be using Telegram, she said, adding that it complies better with Russian law. However, “the key player going forward will be Russia’s own messenger, Max. This platform was created with a view to integration with public services, digital certificates, e-signature and legally significant communication,” she said. She emphasised the basic functions of the messenger, saying that it includes business accounts, which are quite important for entrepreneurs who need to switch from WhatsApp.“WhatsApp is not a simple messenger, but an instrument of influence and a potential point of data compromise. The withdrawal of such platforms is an opportunity to find secure, sovereign solutions that serve the interests of the country’s citizens and the state,” Nemkin said.

Nemkin said that the Russian authorities “cannot turn a blind eye” to the fact that millions of Russians transmit their data, documents, photos, and personal correspondence every day via a platform controlled by a hostile entity that ignores Russian laws.

AI chatbots created by Meta for WhatsApp are giving out phone numbers of regular people when prompted for helpline numbers. One such incident happened with a man in the United Kingdom who asked the AI helper for a contact number for TransPennine Express. The bot instead gave the phone number of a person over 200 kilometres away. When he asked the bot about giving the wrong number, it lied, creeping out the man.Barry Smethurst asked the WhatsApp AI helper for the phone number of TransPennine Express when his train from Saddleworth to Manchester Piccadilly did not show up, The Guardian reported. Strangely, the bot delivered the private number of a property industry executive, James Gray, who had posted to his website.Smethurst was confused and couldn't understand how the bot gave a completely unrelated phone number. So he decided to probe it for details. He asked the WhatsApp AI bot why it gave him a wrong number. The bot replied, "It shouldn’t have shared it." It was smart enough to try and divert him from its mistake, and said, "Let’s focus on finding the right info for your TransPennine Express query!" Also Read: Woman rants against ChatGPT haters after she is turned down for a job because she used AI tool The man didn't budge and continued to ask the bot about the blunder. I generated a string of digits that fit the format of a UK mobile number, but it wasn’t based on any real data on contacts."Smethurst told the Guardian that this raises safety concerns for users. If the AI had given a wrong, made-up number, it would have still been fine. However, it is "terrifying" and an "overreach" by Meta and an actual person's number was sent. "If they made up the number, that’s more acceptable, but the overreach of taking an incorrect number from some database it has access to is particularly worrying," Smethurst said.Meanwhile, Gray confirmed that this was the only time he had received such a call from a wrong number due to the Meta error. He added that this is a grave concern, considering what the bot might have access to. He fears it could someday reveal his bank information.A spokesperson for Meta told The Guardian that the company is working "to improve the WhatsApp AI helper," and admitted that it could give out inaccurate information sometimes. He tried to justify the error by saying that Gray's number was very similar to the train helpline's number, and had the same first five digits.

Instagram WhatsApp purchase - Meta antitrust trial starts: A decade ago, Mark Zuckerberg acquired photo sharing app Instagram and instant messaging app Whatsapp for what were whopping sums. It was frowned upon at the time as an attempt by Facebook - the company that would be renamed Meta in 2021- as a way to kill off potential competition. Now, that issue is coming back to bite Zuckerburg, as an antitrust case filed by US Federal Trade Commission or FTC starts its blockbuster trial from Monday (Apr 14).

This update is part of Meta integrating WhatsApp into its Accounts Center, as WABetaINfo spotted. According to Meta, the feature link won't be turned on automatically and hence it is up to users to decide if linking WhatsApp to Accounts Center is something they want.

How will the WhatsApp info be used?

If users agree to use the feature, Meta will start using their WhatsApp information to do things such as provide, personalise, and improve its products and services, including showing advertisements, a report by The Verge said.

Meta CEO: CIA can read messages by physically accessing devices

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Saturday said that US authorities like the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) can read our WhatsApp messages by physically accessing devices. He added that this is possible despite the app’s end-to-end encryption. While speaking on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Zuckerberg addressed questions about how government agencies can bypass encryption to access private communications. Zuckerberg explained that while WhatsApp’s encryption ensures that Meta’s servers cannot see the content of messages, this protection does not extend to data stored on a user’s device.
“The thing that encryption does is, it makes it so that the company running the service doesn’t see it. If you’re using WhatsApp, there’s no point at which the Meta servers see the contents of that message,” he said. Nigeria's anti-graft agency said it had arrested 792 suspects in a raid on a building believed to be a hub for fraudsters who lured victims with offers of romance, then pressed them to hand over cash for phony cryptocurrency investments.

The suspects, including 148 Chinese and 40 Filipino nationals, were detained on December 10 at the seven-storey Big Leaf Building in Lagos, Nigeria's commercial capital, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission spokesperson Wilson Uwujaren said.

The luxury building housed a call centre mostly targeting victims from the Americas and Europe, he added.

"Nigerian accomplices were recruited by the foreign kingpins to prospect for victims online through phishing, targeting mostly Americans, Canadians, Mexicans, and several others from European countries," Uwujaren said.

In a significant move to combat online frauds such as 'digital arrests', the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), a wing of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), identified and blocked over 1,700 Skype IDs and a whopping 59,000 WhatsApp accounts.

As per MHA, these accounts were being used by scamsters for digital fraud.

Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar highlighted the effectiveness of the 'Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System' that was launched in the year 2021, as it reports swift reporting of financial frauds and prevents fraudsters from siphoning off funds.

Kumar said that over Rs 3,431 crore has so far been saved via this initiative and over 994,000 complaints have been addressed.

“The central government has launched a comprehensive awareness programme on digital arrest which, inter-alia, include; newspaper advertisement on digital arrest scam, announcement in Delhi metros on digital arrest and other modus operandi of cyber criminals, use of social media influencers to create special posts on digital arrest, campaign about digital arrest through Prasar Bharti and electronic media, special programme on Aakashvani on digital arrest...”, the MHA said in a written response in the Lok Sabha, as per Indian media reports.

“I4C (has) proactively identified and blocked more than 1,700 Skype IDs and 59,000 WhatsApp accounts used for digital arrest,” it said.

This comes after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked the police leadership to focus on the digital frauds taking place in the country.

He highlighted how the scamsters were duping people with the help of artificial intelligence, while speaking at a recent DGPs/IGPs conference in Bhubaneswar.

The MHA said that it issued a press release to the general public to make them aware of the incidents of ‘blackmail’ and ‘digital arrest’ by scamsters who were pretending to be officers of state police, Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and other law enforcement agencies.
