Ukraine's first lady Olena Zelenska has alleged that Russian soldiers are using rape and sexual assault as "weapons" in Ukraine's invasion.&nbsp;Speaking in London at a conference on combating sexual assault during armed conflict, she called for a "global response" and claimed that the wives of the Russian military urged their husbands to rape Ukrainian women.

"Sexual violence is the most cruel, most animalistic way to prove mastership over someone. And for victims of this kind of violence, it is difficult to testify in war times because nobody feels safe", said Zelenska.

"This is another instrument that they (Russian forces) are using as their weaponry. This is another weapon in their arsenal in this war and conflict. That's why they're using this systematically and openly."

She further alleged that based on phone conversations they've "managed to capture" they know that rapes and sexual assault are a reality that the Russian servicemen talk about openly while on a call with relatives.

Zelenska said that even the wives of these servicemen knew and in fact, they encourage their husbands to participate in the heinous acts.

"In fact, the wives of Russian servicemen encourage this, they say, 'Go on, rape those Ukrainian women, just don't share this with me, just don't tell me'.&nbsp;This is why there has to be a global response to this."

Allegations of sexual violence during this war started spilling over&nbsp;the past few months.&nbsp;

Last week, Wayne Jordash, an international criminal lawyer assisting Kyiv's war crimes investigations, stated there was proof Russian leadership was aware of sexual abuse committed by military forces in Ukraine, "and in some cases, (were) encouraging it or even ordering it."

According to an UN-supported report released in October, the victims of such abuse in Ukraine ranged in the age from four to over 80, and in some cases, family members were made to witness the crime.

However, she said that human rights officials are closely examining a video that surfaced over the weekend and suggests that Ukrainian troops may have murdered Russian prisoners of war.

US calls the situation in Ukraine a 'new Nuremberg moment', alleges 'systemic' war crimes by Russia

The United States has not fallen short of its support for Ukraine even once. In the last nine months, Washington has been vocal about which side it is on in the ongoing war. In a surprise move, Washington has called out Kyiv for alleged war crimes.

Why is US tracking Ukrainian war crime videos?

Just hours after Russia attacked Ukrainian cities with drones, the White House, on Monday, said that US will hold Russia accountable for "war crimes". One of these drone attacks killed at least four people in an apartment building in Kyiv.&nbsp;

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in his Monday evening video address, said there had been more attacks. "Right now, there is a new Russian drone attack. There are (drones) that have been shot down."

According to Interfax Ukraine news agency, blasts were reported in Fastiv, a town just outside Kyiv. Blasts were also reported in southern port of Odesa.

In its second wave of air strikes in a week, Russian forces have also targetted infrastructure across Ukraine.

Ukrainian soldiers fired into the air trying to shoot down the drones after blasts rocked the capital Kyiv on Monday morning. An anti-aircraft rocket could be seen streaking into the morning sky, followed by an explosion and orange flames, as residents raced for shelter.

US President Joe Biden's press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters that the White House "strongly condemns Russia’s missile strikes today" and said the attack "continues to demonstrate (Russian President Vladimir) Putin’s brutality".

She mentioned a new, USD 725 million military aid package for Ukraine which was announced last Friday

&nbsp;“We will continue to stand with the people of Ukraine for as long as it takes," she said.

“... We will continue to impose costs on Russia, hold them accountable for its war crimes."

A special envoy of the United Nations has accused Russia of using rape and sexual assault&nbsp;as part of their “military strategy” in the ongoing Ukraine invasion.

Speaking to AFP, UN Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict, Pramila Patten, backed her claims by citing a UN report released in late September.

The report released by a panel of UN experts recently verified “more than a hundred cases” of rape or sexual assault incidents in Ukraine since February—when Russia launched its invasion.

Patten claimed that the number of victims is likely to be higher than official figures saying that sexual crimes are often “under-reported”.

“When you hear women testify about Russian soldiers equipped with Viagra, it’s clearly a military strategy,” Pramila Patten, UN Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict, said in an interview with AFP on Thursday.

She said that the report "confirmed crimes against humanity committed by the Russian forces, and according to the gathered testimonies, the age of the victims of sexual violence ranges from four to 82-year-old."

“There are many cases of sexual violence against children who are raped, tortured and sequestered,” Patten said.

“I have not stopped since February to emphasize the importance of having credible investigations into these cases of violence,” she added.

Her claims lend credence to the repeated assertions made by the Ukrainian politicians who spoke of numerous cases of sexual violence since Putin declared war.

In June, Ukraine’s deputy minister of internal affairs Kateryna Pavlichenko alleged that police received around 50 complaints of sexual crimes committed by Russian soldiers.

Ukrainian officials are also probing rape allegations in the Kharkiv region after Ukrainian forces recently recaptured territory there.

‘War crime:’ Large-scale destruction of Ukraine's culture

Captured Britons, Moroccan committed crimes in Donetsk, claims Russia

Kyiv's chief prosecutor on Tuesday (May 31) said that Ukraine has identified several thousand suspected war crimes in the eastern Donbas region. In the particular region, Russian forces are pressing their offensive.&nbsp;

As quoted by news agency AFP, prosecutor general Iryna Venediktova said tha the cases in the industrial region are among some 15,000 across Ukraine. The count is from the day when Russian forces invaded on February 24.&nbsp;

Ukraine identifies 'few thousand' war crimes in Donbas; Zelensky says situation 'extremely difficult'

During the second hearing on Friday (May 20), the first Russian soldier who is facing war crime charges in Ukraine has said that he is "truly and sincerely sorry" and added that he will accept any punishment from the court.&nbsp;

The 21-year-old Russian tank commander, identified as Vadim Shishimarin, has pleaded guilty to killing a 62-year-old civilian Oleksandr Shelipov in the northeast Ukrainian village of Chupakhivka on February 28, a few days after Russia started the invasion of Ukraine.&nbsp;

Shishimarin told the court that he "was nervous about what was going on" and said that he "didn’t want to kill" Shelipov. He even asked Shelipov's widow for forgiveness. Meanwhile, the prosecutors have asked for life imprisonment for Shishimarin.&nbsp;

Ovsiannikov argued that the Russian had only fired the rounds after twice refusing to carry out the order to shoot. He said that&nbsp;only one out of three-to-four rounds hit the target.&nbsp;

'Truly sorry': Russian soldier in war crimes trial in Ukraine says didn't want to kill, will accept punishment

A Russian soldier appeared in a court in Ukrainian capital Kyiv on Friday in a first war crimes trial. The soldier faces charges of killing a civillian. Vadim Shishimarin (21), the Russian soldier, appeared in court for a preliminary hearing.

He is accused of killing an unarmed 62-year-old civillian.

It is accused that Shishimarin fired an automatic rifle from a car window and killed the civillian. This was allegedly done to ensure that there was no witness to the carjacking.

Prosecutor Yaroslav Ushchapivskiy told the Ukrainska Pravda news website that Shishimarin had admitted his guilt and agreed to cooperate with the investigation.

After his convoy was hit in northern Ukraine on February 28, Shishimarin joined four other fleeing soldiers and stole a car from outside the village of Chupakhivka, officials say.

The civilian, who was not named, was riding his bicycle on the side of the road not far from his home when the alleged theft took place, according to prosecutors.&nbsp;

"One of the military servicemen ordered the accused to kill a civilian so that he would not report them," according to a statement from the prosecutor general's office Thursday.

"The man died on the spot just a few dozen metres (yards) from his home," it added. &nbsp;

A Ukrainian court began the preliminary hearing on Friday against Vadim Shysimarin, 21, a commander of the Kantemirovskaya tank division.

Shysimarin’s lawyer Victor Ovsyanikov informed the court that his client has acknowledged of killing the 62-year-old man in the head through an open car window in the northeastern village of Chupakhivka in the first week of the war.

According to prosecutors, Shysimarin, who is from the city of Ust Illyinsk, in the south-eastern Russian region of Irkutsk, shot dead the man after being ordered “to kill a civilian so he would not report them to Ukrainian defenders.”

The Security Service of Ukraine, known as the SBU, posted a short video on May 4 of Shyshimarin speaking in front of camera and briefly describing how he shot the man. The SBU described the video as “one of the first confessions of the enemy invaders”, according to the Daily Mail.

The court will reconvene on May 18, the judge said.

Ukraine’s Mariupol Mayor has accused the Russian forces of hiding evidence of its “barbaric” war crimes in the strategic port city after new satellite images showed a mass burial site in the Russian-occupied village of Manhush, located about 12 miles (19km) west of Mariupol.

The mayor, Vadym Boichenko, was basing his allegation on the satellite images released by the Maxar on late Thursday, showing about 200 graves near an existing cemetery that had been expanded in recent weeks.

The US company’s images indicated that the new graves appeared between March 23 and March 26, The Washington Post reported.

“The biggest war crime of the 21st century was committed in Mariupol. This is the new Babyn Yar. Then, Hitler killed Jews, Roma, and Slavs. Now, Putin is destroying Ukrainians,” Boichenko said in the city council’s statement.

“We need to do everything we can to stop the genocide,” the newspaper quoted Boichenko as saying.

The Mariupol City Council in a statement on Telegram said that around 9,000 civilians are expected to be buried in the mass grave, claiming that the Russians forces “dug new trenches and filled them with corpses every day throughout April.”

The council further claimed that it has information indicating the bodies were “buried in several layers.”

The mayor claimed that more than 20,000 Mariupol residents had been killed since Russian forces began attacking the city during the early days of Vladimir Putin’s invasion.

Most bodies had now been removed, he said, with some disposed of in mobile crematoriums.

On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared that the besieged Mariupol city has been “successfully liberated”.

The same BBC report also mentions, that Lyudmyla Denisova, Ukraine's human rights ombudsman, said that other such examples are being documented.

"About 25 girls and women aged 14 to 24 were systematically raped during the occupation in the basement of one house in Bucha. Nine of them are pregnant," she said. "Russian soldiers told them they would rape them to the point where they wouldn't want sexual contact with any man, to prevent them from having Ukrainian children."

On the other side, video has been circulating on social media purporting to show Ukrainian forces mistreating captured Russian soldiers. Kyiv has said the images look fake but that it will punish perpetrators if found to be true.

The UN Human Rights Council has created the commission of inquiry for one year at the request of Ukraine and allies including the European Union, Britain and the United States.

Russia, which continues to call the invasion a 'special operation' to 'denazify' Ukraine, has opposed the probe

The United Nations also has fact-finding inquiries for war crimes in Syria, Myanmar and other conflicts. Their reports have been used to build cases for potential prosecutions.

A&nbsp;Liberian&nbsp;rebel commander was sentenced in Switzerland to 20 years in jail on Friday for rape, killings and an act of cannibalism, in one of the first-ever convictions over the West African country's civil war.

The case was also Switzerland's first war crimes trial in a civilian court. It involved 46-year-old Alieu Kosiah who went by the nom de guerre "bluff boy" in the rebel faction ULIMO that fought former President Charles Taylor's army in the 1990s.

Kosiah faced 25 charges including one where he was accused of eating slices of a man's heart. He was convicted of that and all but four of the other counts, documents from the Swiss Federal Court showed.

He was arrested in 2014 in Switzerland, where he had been living as a permanent resident. A 2011 Swiss law allows prosecution for serious crimes committed anywhere, under the principle of universal jurisdiction.

A plaintiff in the case who testified that Kosiah ordered his brother's murder urged other&nbsp;Liberians to come forward as witnesses and secure more convictions.

"If you set an example, the other guys will be afraid," he said in a statement via the NGO Civitas Maxima that represented him. He asked not to be named in media reports for fear of reprisals.

The court said that the 20-year sentence was the maximum it was allowed to give under Swiss law.

"No mitigating circumstances were taken into account in the sentencing. Deportation from Switzerland was also ordered for a period of 15 years," it said. Kosiah was also ordered to pay compensation to seven plaintiffs, it added.

It was not immediately clear when the deportation would occur. The roughly 6-1/2 years that Kosiah has already served in pre-trial detention will count towards the sentence, the court papers showed.

Charles Taylor was sentenced for war crimes in 2012, but only for acts in neighbouring Sierra Leone. His son, Chuckie, was sentenced for torture in Liberia by a U.S. court in 2009.
