<p>Last time, Jaishankar and Wang met on the sidelines of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) Ministerial Meeting in Jakarta in July, where they discussed pressing concerns of peace and calm along borders.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Sunday, Jaishankar met his Palestinian counterpart Riyad al-Maliki during which they exchanged views on the current situation in war-torn Gaza.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Nice to see Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki. Exchanged views on the current situation in Gaza," the minister posted on X, sharing a photograph of the meeting.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Jaishankar is in Germany to attend the Munich Security Conference (MSC 2024), the world's leading forum for debate on international security. MSC began on February 16 in the German capital and will end on Sunday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Wang said that "Taiwan independence" threatens the well-being of Taiwan compatriots, and damages the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation. He mentioned that it will seriously undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It is a dead end," Wang said.&nbsp;</p>

China’s foreign minister claims relations with US ‘stabilised’ in 2023

<p>Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi along with his Arab and Islamic counterparts, urged for an immediate ceasefire in the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, the foreign ministers from Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Indonesia, Palestinian authorities, and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation held meetings with Yi in Beijing to push for an end to hostilities and to allow humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Yi emphasised that the pressing priority regarding the conflict was to fully implement the relevant resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly and stop fighting immediately.</p>

<p>"The international community must act urgently and take practical and effective measures to prevent this tragedy from escalating and spreading further. China stands firmly on the side of fairness and justice regarding this conflict," he said.</p>

<p>It has been actively engaging with all the stakeholders in the conflict, holding meetings and working out a peaceful resolution, and silently pitching itself to be the peacemaker of the Gulf&nbsp;region.</p>

<p>This week, Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi met officials in Washington to discuss the conflict amidst fears that it might turn into a major escalation. The US also pledged it would work with China in trying to find a resolution.</p>

<p>Later, Wang held discussions with his Israeli and Palestinian counterparts after China's Middle East special envoy Zhai Jun flew to the region to meet Arab leaders.</p>

<p>Tehran on its part also said that it is “ready to strengthen communication with China" on resolving the situation in Gaza.</p>

<p>According to the Financial Times, US officials urged Wangi Yi to use China’s close relations with Iran, which backs Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, and work towards a peaceful resolution.</p>

<h2><strong>China's interests in region is rooted in economics&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Experts argue that there are two primary reasons why China wants to play peacemaker in the conflict-torn region.</p>

<p>One reason is its economic interests in the Middle East, which could be endangered if the conflict widens.</p>

<p>China is heavily dependent on foreign imports for oil, and at the same time, it pegs Arab nations to be the key pillars of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the lynchpin of its foreign and economic policy.</p>

<p>Another reason is that the conflict provides a golden opportunity for Beijing to burnish its reputation.</p>

<p>China believes that "standing up for the Palestinians resonates with Arab countries, Muslim-majority countries and large portions of the Global South", Dawn Murphy, an associate professor who studies Chinese foreign policy at the National War College under the US Department of Defence, told BBC.</p>

<p>She says that China seeks positive relations with the Palestinians, Arabs, Turkey and Iran, adding, "Together with the US which has good relations with Israel, they could bring all of the players to the table."</p>

<p>A senior US official who briefed reporters on the trip on customary condition of anonymity said that Washington’s top priority has been to ensure the intense competition between the world’s two largest economies and their disagreements over a host of issues do not veer into conflict, reported Reuters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“We continue to believe that direct face-to-face diplomacy is the best way to raise challenging issues, address misperception and miscommunication, and explore working with the Chinese where our interests intersect,” said the US official, as quoted by AFP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The visit also comes as Israel continues to bombard Gaza in retaliation for Palestinian militant group Hamas’ attacks, while Russia’s war in Ukraine grinds on. Washington has repeatedly reiterated support for both Tel Aviv and Kyiv.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The US will also prioritise efforts to re-establish military-to-military ties with China, said the US officials.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Recently, both Beijing and Washington have sought diplomatic advantage against each other over the ongoing violence in the Middle East. During his multi-nation visit to the region, Blinken spoke to Wang asking Beijing to exert pressure on Iran, which supposedly backs Hamas.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a statement, the foreign ministry of China on Monday said that Wang "will go to Russia to hold the 18th round of the China-Russian Strategic Security Consultations (SSCC) from 18 to 21 September" after receiving an invitation from the secretary of Moscow's security council Nikolai Patrushev.</p>

<h2><strong>Wang, Lavrov to 'focus on efforts to strengthen collaboration'</strong></h2>

<p>In an initial briefing, the Russian foreign ministry stated that Wang will be meeting with his counterpart Sergei Lavrov, and the two leaders will "focus on efforts to strengthen collaboration on the international scene" in their talks.<br />

"There will be a detailed exchange of views on issues related to a settlement in Ukraine, as well as ways of ensuring stability and security in the Asia-Pacific region," said a spokesperson.<br />

<p>Days after assuming charge as the Foreign Minister of China, top diplomat Wang Yi pledged to “resolutely guard” Chinese sovereignty and security.</p>

<p>These were Wang Yi’s first remarks on Friday (July 28) after he was brought back to his old job following the mysterious disappearance and sacking of his predecessor Qin Gang — a close aide of President Xi Jinping who hasn’t been seen in public since June.</p>

<p>“We will unite more closely around the Communist Party’s Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at the core,” the 69-year-old said in a message, according to South China Morning Post (SCMP).</p>

<h2><strong>Wang Yi reinstated&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Last year, Wang Yi was promoted to foreign affairs chief of&nbsp;China’s ruling Communist Party, making him the country’s No 1 diplomat. He served as the foreign minister for nearly a decade before being succeeded by Qin in December.</p>

<p>In Qin’s unannounced absence, Wang has been filling his shoes before the formal announcement was made.</p>

<p>China would “firmly pursue an independent foreign policy of peace” and actively take part in the reform of global governance, Wang said in his statement, while pledging to expand partnerships with countries around the world.</p>

<p>“[China will] resolutely safeguard its national sovereignty, security and development interests” and “fully protect” the rights of Chinese citizens, he said.</p>

<h2><strong>No word on Qin Gang</strong></h2>

<p>So, far no official explanation has been given by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs over the sudden shake-up, nor any reports have emerged about Qin’s whereabouts.</p>

In first remarks post abrupt Chinese foreign ministry shake-up Wang Yi pledges to ‘defend sovereignty’

<p>The mystery around Qin Gang continues to deepen. Qin was sacked and became the shortest-serving foreign minister ever in the nation. Veteran diplomat and Qin's predecessor Wang Yi has returned to the post.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He replaced Qin, who has been absent from duties barely half a year into the job. But Beijing is still not revealing why Qin was fired. The case also reminded of industry minister Xiao Yaqing, who vanished from public view for nearly a month last year, but eventually, it was revealed he was being investigated for corruption.</p>

<p>The world is talking about Qin as China is notoriously famous for the sudden disappearances of notable figures, and its silence over the issues despite global calls to divulge details.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Qin was removed from office by Beijing's highest legislative body on Tuesday (July 25) after only 207 days in the role. China's foreign ministry did not respond to a request for comment and Chinese state media did not say why he was removed. State news agency Xinhua reported that President Xi Jinping signed a presidential order to make the decision effective.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Who is Qin Gang?</strong>&nbsp;</h2>

<p>The 57-year-old was a former aide to President Xi Jinping. He was also an envoy to the United States. He took over the foreign ministry in December. There have been speculations that Qin might have fallen out of favour. Interestingly, any reference to Qin had been removed from the website of China's foreign ministry by July 26.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Qin, who is originally from the northern city of Tianjin, used to work with Xi as the head of the foreign ministry's etiquette department. Analysts think his promotion - first to the US ambassador and then to China's number two diplomat, was because Xi liked him and had faith in him.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He has not been seen in public since June 25 when he met Russia's deputy foreign minister Andrey Rudenko in Beijing, but China remained silent for weeks about the fate of Qin.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Beijing's since didn't stop the rumour mill and social media buzz over his name. Some speculations suggested that the diplomat was in trouble because of an alleged affair with a popular television anchor, who is also untraceable.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ho-fung Hung, an expert in Chinese politics at Johns Hopkins University, told AFP: "People from the outside are totally in the dark and the episode illustrates that Chinese politics is becoming increasingly unpredictable and volatile, though under a calm surface."&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a report by the news agency, it was mentioned that a search for his name produced no results, and prior articles about his diplomatic appearances displayed a message indicating that the page "does not exist or has been deleted."&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, his name did appear on other Chinese government websites, including those of the State Council, the Ministry of Commerce, and state media outlets, the report said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On being asked about his disappearance from the foreign ministry website, Mao said: "Information on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is updated according to relevant management regulations."&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>China's reaction to Qin's absence?</strong>&nbsp;</h2>

<p>Initially, the Chinese foreign ministry avoided questions on Qin for weeks, after previously saying "health reasons" were to blame for his absence.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Tuesday, state media gave no reason for his dismissal but one expert said Qin's "digital erasure" suggested he had fallen from grace.&nbsp;</p>

<p>China analyst Bill Bishop wrote in his Sinocism newsletter, "If he were a comrade in good standing who had fallen ill I am not sure that would be happening."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Neil Thomas, who is a fellow on Chinese politics at the Asia Society Policy Institute, a US think tank, agreed. "Evidence is emerging suggesting this is indeed a political purge," Thomas said on Twitter, which is now rebranded as X.&nbsp;</p>

<p>One expert even said that what happened to Qin is an example that no official is immune in Chinese politics, despite their good relations with Xi or any other senior official.&nbsp;</p>

<p>China law expert Neysun Mahboubi told AFP: "I think the main implication would be for Chinese officialdom, with the message being that no one is safe, however high they may have risen or however strongly they have been supported by Xi Jinping."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ja Ian Chong, a political scientist at the National University of Singapore, said, "The lack of an explanation opens more questions than provides answers. It also underscores the opacity and unpredictability, even arbitrariness in the current political system."&nbsp;</p>

The mystery around Qin Gang continues to deepen. Qin was sacked and became the shortest-serving foreign minister ever in the nation. Veteran diplomat and Qin's predecessor Wang Yi has returned to the post. He replaced Qin, who has been absent from duties barely half a year into the job. But Beijing is still not revealing why Qin was fired. The case also reminded of industry minister Xiao Yaqing, who vanished from public view for nearly a month last year, but eventually, it was revealed he was being investigated for corruption. The world is talking about Qin as China is notoriously famous for the sudden disappearances of notable figures, and its silence over the issues despite global calls to divulge details. Qin was removed from office by Beijing's highest legislative body on Tuesday (July 25) after only 207 days in the role. China's foreign ministry did not respond to a request for comment and Chinese state media did not say why he was removed. State news agency Xinhua reported that President Xi Jinping signed a presidential order to make the decision effective. She referred journalists to a state news agency article and declined to offer any further information. Mao said, "Xinhua has already published information. You can refer to that." On being asked about how she evaluated Qin's brief stint as foreign minister, Mao said she was "probably not the right person to answer that question". She said, "I don't think it's appropriate for me to pass judgment", insisting that China was "releasing normal information" concerning Qin's position. Who is Qin Gang? The 57-year-old was a former aide to President Xi Jinping. He was also an envoy to the United States. He took over the foreign ministry in December. There have been speculations that Qin might have fallen out of favour. Interestingly, any reference to Qin had been removed from the website of China's foreign ministry by July 26. Qin, who is originally from the northern city of Tianjin, used to work with Xi as the head of the foreign ministry's etiquette department. Analysts think his promotion - first to the US ambassador and then to China's number two diplomat, was because Xi liked him and had faith in him. Beijing's since didn't stop the rumour mill and social media buzz over his name. Some speculations suggested that the diplomat was in trouble because of an alleged affair with a popular television anchor, who is also untraceable. Ho-fung Hung, an expert in Chinese politics at Johns Hopkins University, told AFP: "People from the outside are totally in the dark and the episode illustrates that Chinese politics is becoming increasingly unpredictable and volatile, though under a calm surface." However, his name did appear on other Chinese government websites, including those of the State Council, the Ministry of Commerce, and state media outlets, the report said. On being asked about his disappearance from the foreign ministry website, Mao said: "Information on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is updated according to relevant management regulations." China's reaction to Qin's absence? Initially, the Chinese foreign ministry avoided questions on Qin for weeks, after previously saying "health reasons" were to blame for his absence. On Tuesday, state media gave no reason for his dismissal but one expert said Qin's "digital erasure" suggested he had fallen from grace. China analyst Bill Bishop wrote in his Sinocism newsletter, "If he were a comrade in good standing who had fallen ill I am not sure that would be happening." Neil Thomas, who is a fellow on Chinese politics at the Asia Society Policy Institute, a US think tank, agreed. "Evidence is emerging suggesting this is indeed a political purge," Thomas said on Twitter, which is now rebranded as X. One expert even said that what happened to Qin is an example that no official is immune in Chinese politics, despite their good relations with Xi or any other senior official. China law expert Neysun Mahboubi told AFP: "I think the main implication would be for Chinese officialdom, with the message being that no one is safe, however high they may have risen or however strongly they have been supported by Xi Jinping." Ja Ian Chong, a political scientist at the National University of Singapore, said, "The lack of an explanation opens more questions than provides answers. It also underscores the opacity and unpredictability, even arbitrariness in the current political system."
