Speaking before the U.N. Security Council session on Wednesday, Zelensky presented his country’s 10-point plan to end the war with Russia.

He also criticised the U.N. for not fulfilling its role and solving world conflicts and called for Moscow to be stripped of its veto power in the Council, said reports. 
 
“We should recognize that the U.N. finds itself in a deadlock on the matter of aggression. Humankind no longer pins its hopes on the U.N. when it comes to the defense of the sovereign border of nations,” he said.

"Veto power in the hands of the aggressor is what has pushed the UN into a deadlock. It is impossible to stop the war because all efforts are vetoed by the aggressor or those who condone the aggressor,"&nbsp;Zelensky continued.

For the first time since the war broke out, Zelensky, clad in his now-customary military fatigues, sat in the same room as a Russian official.&nbsp;

"Most of the world recognises the truth about this war. It is a criminal and unprovoked aggression by Russia against our nation aimed at seizing Ukraine's territory and resources."

As Zelensky continued his speech, the Russian official looked uninterested and continued to scroll through his smartphone.&nbsp;

<h2>Moscow responds</h2>

After Zelensky's speech, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov took the centre stage and defended his country's use of veto power in the UNSC as a "legitimate tool" of international relations.

"The use of veto is an absolutely legitimate tool laid out in the (UN) Charter," said Lavrov.&nbsp;

The Russian leader also accused the US and its allies of&nbsp;“egregiously and openly” interfering in the domestic affairs of Ukraine since the collapse of the Soviet Union.&nbsp;

<h2>Zelensky's previous stance&nbsp;</h2>

Notably, Wednesday wasn't the first instance when Zelensky had openly egged the UNSC to chalk out Moscow's veto prowess.&nbsp;

During last year's session as well, Zelensky toed a similar line, saying the invasion of a fellow member state had upturned the world order.&nbsp;

Russia 'weaponising' both food and energy The Ukrainian leader started the speech by calling out Russia for weaponising many things not just against Ukraine but also against other countries as well. "The aggressor is weaponising many other things, and those things are used not only against our country but against all of yours as well," said Zelensky. "Russia is launching the food prices as weapons. The impact spans from the Atlantic coast of Africa to south-east Asia." Ukraine's push for nuclear disarmament Zelensky took a shot at Russia and its nuclear prowess saying, a permanent member of the Security Council could not be trusted with nuclear weapons. "Terrorists have no right to hold (a) nuclear weapon," he said. Prior to his appointment, Umerov, proficient in both English and Turkish, served as the head of Ukraine's primary privatisation agency, the State Property Fund, for approximately a year.

He received recognition for transforming the institution and reinitiating efforts to privatise state-owned companies, even amid the ongoing war, thus aiding their transition to private ownership.

Sergiy Leshchenko, an advisor to the presidential administration, noted, "It is the highest state position ever held by a Tatar from Crimea."

According to senior lawmaker Yaroslav Zheleznyak's post on social media, 338 out of 360 present lawmakers voted in favour of Umerov's nomination.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Sweden in what is his first trip since Russia launched its offensive on Ukraine.&nbsp;

"Olena and I arrived in Sweden," Zelensky said on X, formerly known as Twitter, while&nbsp;referring to his wife. He said he will hold talks focused on "partnership, defence cooperation, EU integration, and common Euro-Atlantic security."

<h2>Why Zelensky is in Sweden?</h2>

Sweden has a robust defence industry and despite its purported symbolisms of peace advocacy groups in and beyond capital Stockholm, has been a key supplier of weaponry to the countries in many parts of the world.&nbsp;

Zelensky's visit comes amid reports that all of the Archer self-propelled howitzers donated by Sweden will soon be delivered to Ukraine.

During his visit, Zelensky is scheduled to meet with Swedish government officials in Harpsund, located about 120 kilometers west of Stockholm. Additionally, he will have an audience with Sweden's King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia at a palace in the area.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin recently visited top military leaders in the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don, near the Ukrainian border.

During the visit, Putin was briefed by Valery Gerasimov, the commander overseeing Moscow's operations in Ukraine, and other high-ranking military officials at the headquarters of Russia's Southern Military District.

The details of Putin's visit were not confirmed, but footage from state media suggested the meeting took place at night, with Gerasimov welcoming Putin and leading him into a building. The meeting itself remained undisclosed to the public.

Ukraine has reported progress in its counteroffensive efforts, reclaiming the village of Urozhaine in the eastern Donetsk region.

The leader of the Russian battalion defending Urozhaine admitted that his troops could not achieve victory against Ukraine and called for a "front freeze."

Zelensky visits NATO-aspirant Sweden with focus on 'EU integration'

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has fired chiefs of all local military recruitment centres amid corruption allegations.

Zelensky on Friday (August 11) said a review of Ukraine’s military recruitment centres revealed signs of massive abuse of power, including taking bribes to let military-age men cross the border despite a wartime ban.

In a statement issued on Friday, Zelensky said, “This system should be run by people who know exactly what war is and why cynicism and bribery during war is treason," an awakening that seems to have hit him 18 months into the war.

<h2>Filling vacancies now topmost priority</h2>

It was not known how many officials were fired but Zelensky instructed his top general Valery Zaluzhny to fill vacancies as soon as possible and implement the decisions.

Also, new candidates for the posts will be first vetted by Ukrainian intelligence agency SBU, to keep Russian moles at bay.&nbsp;

The embattled president of Ukraine has made tackling graft the topmost priority as the country’s counteroffensive against Russia falters.

The move is also aimed at pleasing officials in US and Europe as they debate whether or not the warring nation should be admitted into NATO and the European Union (EU).

<h2>Move comes amidst faltering counteroffensive</h2>

Over the course of 18 months since Russia's invasion, Ukrainians have primarily maintained a defensive stance, thwarting Moscow's attempts to capture additional territories.&nbsp;

However, this summer, Ukraine decided to take the offensive way, aided by substantial Western military support. Ukraine attempted to reclaim the eastern and southern regions previously seized by the Russians.&nbsp;

Despite this, a glance at a comprehensive map of these areas indicates minimal change during the two months of the counter-offensive.

Their forces remain deeply entrenched. Notably, the situation has remained relatively static since November 2022, when Ukraine last made significant gains by reclaiming Kherson in the south along with substantial portions of the northeast.

<h2>Silver lining for Ukraine</h2>

But Ukraine has reported small successes too, including the retaking of Staromaiorske village in Donetsk, as reported by BBC.

The informal group of NATO’s Big Four — US, France, Britain, and Germany — remains very much active during the ongoing war in Ukraine in boosting Kyiv’s war effort.

But the alliance has fallen short of accepting Ukraine as a fellow ally due to Zelensky’s inconsistencies towards joining NATO and Ukraine’s own fallacies.

An odd among NATO’s aces in Vilnius, while Zelensky appeared desperate to make Ukraine enter the alliance, he had called for "new institutions, new alliances" in his address to the US Congress in March 2023.

Furthermore, to meet one of the three main criteria for entry into NATO, a European nation must demonstrate a commitment to democracy, individual liberty and support for the rule of law.&nbsp;

Finland, the latest NATO entrant justifies this criteria while Ukraine’s record in these domains remains faltered.&nbsp;

Ukraine’s NATO bid: Why Zelensky is living under illusions

Zelensky's comment comes a week after Russian President Vladimir Putin witnessed a major challenge to his authority as Wagner Group chief Yevgeny Prigozhin launched a mutiny against the military leadership in Moscow.&nbsp;

Zelensky was speaking during a press conference with a Spanish media portal. He&nbsp;said that the "private military company has suffered enormous losses, particularly in Eastern Ukraine", &nbsp;CNN reported.

Zelensky described the Wagner fighters as "mostly convicts who had nothing to lose", and were recruited as akin to "motivated staff of the Russian army".

<h2>Entire world wants to kill Putin: Zelensky</h2>

"Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin's rebellion has greatly affected Russian power on the battlefield and could be beneficial to Ukraine's counteroffensive…We need to take advantage of this situation to push the enemy out of our land," Zelensky said.

Zelensky said that the "entire world wants to kill him (Putin)".

"It's more dangerous for Putin. Only in Russia that they want to kill me, whereas the entire world wants to kill him," Zelensky said.

<h2>Zelensky afraid of losing support for war from US Republicans</h2>

Zelensky also expressed fears of losing bipartisan support from the United States, and cited "dangerous messages coming from some Republicans."

"We have bipartisan support, however, there are different messages in their circles regarding support for Ukraine. There are messages coming from some Republicans, sometimes dangerous messages, that there may be less support," Zelensky said.

"The most important thing for Ukraine is not to lose bipartisan support," he added.

On June 29, Russia's Wagner mercenary group's rebellion against military leadership in Moscow lasted for a little less than 36 hours. It ended after Belarus brokered a peace deal, following which the Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin — also a former chef to President Vladimir Putin — announced that he was pulling his troops back to their bases.&nbsp;

Wagner's chief and some of his forces arrived in Belarus after President Vladimir Putin gave the fighters three options: sign contracts with the Russian defence ministry, return to civilian life or go into exile in Belarus.

The religious leader&nbsp;called for a two-week truce in the zone of hostilities in Ukraine, Russian news agency TASS reported on Friday, citing a conversation between&nbsp;Leonid Sevastyanov, the leader of the World Union of Old Believers, and Pope Francis.

"Next week is the Catholic Easter week, and then there will follow the Orthodox Easter week. The Pope has just told me that in honour of this, he suggests that all hostilities in the special military operation zone in Ukraine be stopped for two weeks: for the Catholic and Orthodox Easter weeks. Starting from this Sunday and for two weeks there would be no offensives at all, everyone would stop shooting at each other and a truce would be declared," Sevastyanov was quoted as saying by TASS.

The Old Believers’ leader reportedly went on to say&nbsp;that this issue was very important to the head of the Catholic church.

Following the meeting, the two leaders held a press conference where Duda said that Poland will if the need arises, give its "whole remaining fleet of MiG-29s to Ukraine".

"I think that in the future we will be able to transfer our whole remaining fleet of MiG-29s to Ukraine if there is still such a need," said Duda.

The Polish president said that given that the remaining fighter jets in Poland's possession had been "adapted to NATO standards", the move would require a green light from NATO allies.

He specified that Poland would be able to pass on its MiG-29s to Ukraine as they get the new South Korean FA-50 fighter jets as well as the US-made F-35 stealth jets that have been ordered.

During his latest rare trip outside of Ukraine, Zelensky will also meet with Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.

As per AFP, he will also deliver remarks in the historic centre of the Polish capital, Warsaw.&nbsp;

French President Emmanuel Macron, who was a part of the conference, joined in the call for allies to intensify the support for Ukraine to aid its forces in launching a counter-offensive. "It is not the time for dialogue because we have a Russia which has chosen war, which has chosen to intensify the war, and which has chosen to go as far as committing war crimes and to attacking civilian infrastructure," Macron said, AFP reported.&nbsp;

German chancellor Olaf Scholz, meanwhile, insisted that Berlin's support was "designed to last", and urged allies to speed up deliveries of heavy tanks promised to Ukraine.&nbsp;

In May, Japan will be hosting the G7 Summit in Hiroshima where Russia's offensive in Ukraine is going to be one of the biggest agendas. The Japanese government has worked with its allies to sanction Moscow and boost support to Kyiv, even taking the rare step of offering refuge to people fleeing the war.&nbsp;

"There is nothing to be lost by doubling down on the material, and equipment that we are sending to Ukraine and there is nothing to fear in escalation, and the best thing for the world is to get this thing done, and done fast," the former British Prime Minister said on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos on Thursday, Reuters reported.&nbsp;

She added the government is consulting with its partners on the two measures,&nbsp;one that would support Zelensky's10-point peace formula and the second that would establish a tribunal to prosecute crimes of aggression, which would enable Russia to be held accountable for its offensive, the Associated Press report said.&nbsp;

Sergiy Kyslytsya,&nbsp;the Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN,&nbsp;said the General Assembly has already scheduled a debate on the war on February 23. This would be followed by a ministerial meeting of the Security Council the next day. Last month, Ukraine's foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba told the Associated Press that his government wanted a peace summit in the UN by the end of February with Secretary-General Antonio Guterres as mediator. However, Kuleba did not anticipate Moscow taking part.&nbsp;

Biden pledged that his government would lend its support against "Russian aggression" for "as long as it takes."

In the latest news on the war, missiles struck key infrastructure facilities in Ukraine's capital city Kyiv on Saturday (January 14) with mayor Vitali Klitschko urging residents to stay in shelters, news agency AFP reported.&nbsp;

Zelensky wants to address UN General Assembly when Russian invasion completes one year

A little more than three months after putting&nbsp;Sergey Surovikin in charge&nbsp;of the Ukraine war, Russian President Vladimir Putin has&nbsp;demoted him and announced a replacement.&nbsp;

General&nbsp;Valery Gerasimov will take&nbsp;Surovikin's position who has been nicknamed&nbsp;'General Armageddon' in military circles. The country's defence ministry made the announcement on its official Telegram account.&nbsp;

"Army General Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the General Staff of the Russian armed forces, has been appointed Commander of the Joint Grouping of Troops (Forces)."

Gerasimov will be working alongside&nbsp;two other generals, Oleg&nbsp;Salyukov and Alexei Kim. Meanwhile,&nbsp;Surovikin will serve as&nbsp;Gerasimov's deputy.&nbsp;&nbsp;

While most experts see the re-shuffling of the pack as a panic measure, Moscow said the appointment was aimed at increasing close cooperation between the troops.&nbsp;

"The increase in the level of leadership of the special operation is linked to the expansion of the scale of the tasks at hand and the need to organise closer interaction between troops."

Ukraine war: Zelensky's peace plan must include four annexed regions, says Kremlin

The United States is all set to approve an aid package of over $45 billion for Ukraine just days after President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit. The US senate has already promised Zelensky that it will provide Ukraine with Patriot missiles in order to help their fight in the ongoing conflict with Russia.

The US has already sent over $50 billion in aid to Ukraine this year and the military and economic assistance will be part of the planned aids for 2023. United States President Joe Biden has also imposed strict sanctions on Russian politicians and the oil and gas supply from Moscow.

The main point of discussion between Zelensky and Biden during the recent visit was the acquisition of Patriot missiles in order to counter the Russian attacks. The two leaders were able to reach an understanding with Washington also providing Kyiv with modern battle tanks and long-range missiles called ATACMS. The bill is expected to pass the senate with unanimous support.

Zelensky, in a late-night video address Tuesday, said that ships with cargoes of grain were still moving out of Ukrainian ports due to support from Turkey and the United Nations.&nbsp;

“But a reliable and long-term defence is needed for the grain corridor,” Zelensky said.&nbsp;

The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine has led to significant food shortages and cost of living crises in the countries that import Ukrainian grain in Europe and Africa. However, a deal under the banner of ‘Black Sea Grain Initiative’ was brokered by Turkey and United Nations on July 22, that led to the formulation of safe passage for cargoes carrying grain and fertilisers from Ukraine.&nbsp;

Citing an attack on its Black Sea fleet, Russia pulled out of the Black Sea Grain Initiative on Saturday, October 29.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Amir Abdullah, the United Nations coordinator for grain and fertiliser exports said Tuesday that no movement of vessels is planned till November 2. “Under the Black Sea Grain Initiative’, we expect loaded ships to sail on Thursday,” he added.&nbsp;

Despite Russian pullback from ‘Black Sea Grain Initiative’, Turkish Defence Minister Hulusi Akar hoped that the pact for grains and fertillisers export from Ukraine would continue. “We expect a response from them today (Russia) and tomorrow,”Akar said Tuesday.&nbsp;
