As the anniversary celebrations commenced, Ukraine also unveiled plans for how it intends to make Putin responsible for his crimes.

As per an AFP report, Ukraine is drawing up plans for a special international tribunal to investigate Russia's alleged "crime of aggression".

The Rome Statute of 2010 established the definition of the crime of aggression.&nbsp;However, since neither Ukraine nor Russia has joined the Rome Statute, it is unable to investigate charges of aggression.

Speaking to AFP, the man spearheading this plan, Andrii Smirnov, deputy head of Ukraine's presidential administration, said that this court is "the only way to make sure that the criminals who started the Ukraine war are held accountable quickly."

"The world has a short memory. That's why I would like this tribunal to start working next year."

It "will serve to make sure that these people are labelled as criminals, and that they cannot travel in the civilised world," he said, adding that Ukraine is aware that the accused will not be present.

Approximately 600 suspects in the aggression have been named by Ukrainian authorities so far, including senior military officers, politicians, and commentators.

The international treaty establishing the tribunal has been drafted and is ready for signing by nations.

The US embassy in Kyiv asked all US citizens who are still in Ukraine to leave the nation immediately.

It further continued, "If in a home or a building, go to the lowest level of the structure with the fewest exterior walls, windows, and openings; close any doors and sit near an interior wall, away from any windows or openings."

The United States on Monday condemned the targeted killing of civilians, saying it stands against such practices, whether they occur in Ukraine or Russia.

The reason behind the targeted killing by Russia is the killing of Darya Dugina, daughter of a close adviser to the Russian president, in a car bomb blast on Saturday night.

Earlier this week,&nbsp;the Daily Beast reported that Yuriy Ihnat, spokesperson for the Air Force Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, has issued a warning that “we must definitely be prepared for possible missile strikes.”

Following Ukraine's last-week success in obtaining a two-year respite on its foreign debt from creditors, Fitch and S&amp;P&nbsp;have raised the war-torn nation's credit rating.&nbsp;

On Thursday, as per AFP Fitch said that the August 11 deal alleviates "external debt servicing pressure, in the context of weakening international reserves and acute war-related spending needs," giving Kyiv breathing room on approximately $6 billion in principal and interest outstanding on Eurobonds.

In spite of the fact that Fitch has improved Ukraine's rating from RD to CC, the rating still indicates that there is still a chance of default.

"As a result, the near-term risks to the government's liquidity position and, more broadly, its capacity to honor commercial debt, including in foreign currency, appear manageable," AFP reported S&amp;P as saying.

However, S&amp;P stated this is based on the presumption that donors like the US and EU will continue to fund Kyiv in the months ahead.&nbsp;

The statement released by Kremlin further stated that both leaders called for experts of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to inspect the plant "as soon as possible" and "assess the real situation on the ground".&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Elysee in a separate statement said that Macron is concerned about safety risks at the nuclear plant and said that he "supported the dispatch of a mission of experts from the IAEA to the site under conditions agreed by Ukraine and the United Nations".&nbsp;

Since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, Macron had quite a few telephonic conversations with Putin. He also faced criticism for keeping up diplomatic talks with the Russian president despite his decision to invade Ukraine.&nbsp;

An official at the French presidency told journalists in a briefing on Friday that Macron's phone call to Putin was justified in view of the serious safety risk affecting the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in Ukraine which is subject to combat activity.&nbsp;

United Nations chief Antonio Guterres on Friday (August 19) asked that the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station not be cut off from Ukraine's grid.

During his crucial visit to the port of Odessa in southern Ukraine, the UN Secretary-General said, "Obviously, the electricity from Zaporizhzhia is Ukrainian electricity... This principle must be fully respected."

During the same call, Putin also told Macron that Russia was facing obstacles in the export of its food products and fertiliser. "There are still obstacles to the mentioned Russian exports that do not contribute to the solution of problems related to ensuring global food security," the Kremlin said.&nbsp;

This remark comes after last month in Istanbul, Russia and Ukraine signed landmark deals with Turkey and the United Nations that opened secure corridors for grain exports to leave Ukraine's Black Sea ports. &nbsp;

A similar agreement signed at the same time allowed Russia to export its agricultural products and fertiliser despite Western sanctions over Moscow's military intervention in Ukraine.&nbsp;

As fighting rages on between Kyiv and Moscow, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday ruled out peace with Russia unless it withdraws its troops from Ukraine.

Zelensky made the statement after meeting with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

As per an AFP report, while speaking to the press, the war-torn country's president said he was "very surprised" to hear from the Turkish president that Russia was "ready for some kind of peace", adding, "first they should leave our territory and then we'll see".

Fears of a nuclear disaster in Ukraine are growing every day as the country and its aggressor Russia, continue to engage in strikes around Europe's largest nuclear power plant, Zaporizhzhia.&nbsp;

For the last two weeks, the power plant has been at grave risk as shelling around it continues.&nbsp;This has raised concern among the international community, United Nations nuclear watchdog IAEA has even warned of impending nuclear disaster and has&nbsp;called for a demilitarised zone.

NATO too has called for an urgent need to inspect the power plant.

For&nbsp;insights into&nbsp;the looming tragedy, WION spoke to senior journalist Mac William Bishop, who is currently situated near&nbsp;Mykolaiv, Ukraine. When asked about the present scenario around the Zaporizhzhia power plant, Bishop noted that the situation "isn't clear"&nbsp;at this time.

As per him "Russian military forces are in control of the nuclear power plant however the Ukrainian workers that operate the plant still continue to go to work, maintain the plant and ensure its safe operation."

Bishop says that the situation isn’t that bad at the moment, but that there is a concern that "it could become quite bad, quite quickly"

Talking about the 1986 Chornobyl disaster, he said that Ukraine has been the scene of one of the worst nuclear accidents in human history, the fallout of which affected the whole of Europe and the site of which is still the scene of an exclusion zone "where people still can't live and possibly won't be able to for hundreds of years".

"There is a major concern obviously, when you talk about mixing nuclear reactors and high explosives, military grade weapons...the possibility that there could be a catastrophic failure is real and I think that is why so many actors in the international community are now concerned about what is happening in this location."&nbsp;

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned that the impending disaster would affect the whole of Europe and has requested international agencies to intervene.&nbsp;

In Bishop's view "It has also been the strategy of the Ukrainian government to try to get more international actors involved in this conflict and so of course that is also part of the reason why they are reaching out to the IAEA and UN for assistance in dealing with this issue"

Following the plant's strike in March, nuclear catastrophe was narrowly avoided. Fortunately, there was no radiation leak and there was no damage to the reactors. The plant has remained at the front lines of the Russia-Ukraine conflict ever since and the two nations continue to blame one another for the strike.

Talking about the ongoing blame game between Russia and Ukraine and his thoughts on who actually shelled the plant Bishop remarked "If Russian troops are occupying this nuclear power plant it would make little sense for the Ukrainians to shell the facility in order to try and liberate it. Meanwhile, why the Russians would shell a facility that they are controlling also makes little sense from a strategic and tactical standpoint."

He pointed out that "there is a very intensive propaganda, information war being conducted by both Ukraine and Russia, on social media platforms, through traditional news outlets," and that "each side is working to shape the narrative to their advantage"

"We simply don't have enough details about what exactly is happened or the nature of these shelling, the origin of it to make any kind of clear assessment at this point," he added.

As per reports, on Thursday (August 18), United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan in Kyiv.

The question is: Will the upcoming visits by the heads of the UN and a possible visit by the IAEA chief have any impact or potentially calm things down?

"I think that is certainly the hope of any responsible party that's looking at events around this nuclear power plant. Unfortunately, international organisations like the UN, they've not proven to be particularly affective in this conflict. But there are some signs of hope because there have been some isolated incidents in which the UN was able to achieve limited evacuations of non-combatants in key areas for example," said Bishop.&nbsp;

Although demilitarising the area around the nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhia would resolve this immediate issue, it wouldn't address the larger issues or the conflict, he said, adding that it is important to keep in mind that this is a critical situation.

The Russian news agency TASS reported that a decree published on Monday (August 15) on the official portal of legal information said that the award entitles the mothers to a lump sum payment of $16,138 (₽1 million). His remarks came on Monday at the opening of an annual arms show outside Moscow that caters to foreign customers.

The Kremlin leader said that Russia’s arms exports play an important role in the development of a “multipolar word,” —a term Kremlin uses it to describe its efforts to counter what it sees as US global domination.

Noting that the Russian weapons are far advanced from the competition, Putin said that Moscow cherishes its strong ties with Latin America, Asia and Africa, “and is ready to offer partners and allies the most modern types of weapons – from small arms to armoured vehicles and artillery, combat aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles.”

“Almost all of them have been used more than once in real combat operations," he added.

The 69-tear-old hailed the Russian military’s action in Ukraine&nbsp;and thanked the allies for their support, adding Moscow could offer new models and systems.

&nbsp;“We are talking about high-precision weapons and robotics, about combat systems based on new physical principles. Many of them are years, or maybe decades ahead of their foreign counterparts, and in terms of tactical and technical characteristics they are significantly superior to them,” Putin said.

Russia accounts for around 20 per cent of global weapons sales, and is the world’s second-largest arms exporter, behind the US. From 2016 to 2020, Moscow sold $28bn of weapons to 45 countries.

Moscow exports nearly 90 per cent of its arms to 10 countries. Its biggest customer is India, which has bought 23 per cent of Russia’s weapons for some $6.5bn over the past five years. Half of India’s total arms imports, 49.3 per cent, come from Russia, according to Al Jazeera.

Vladimir Putin accuses US of causing tensions in Asia with Taiwan visit

Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed interest to “expand the comprehensive and constructive bilateral relations” with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Pyongyang’s state media reported on Monday.

According to KCNA&nbsp;news agency said, Putin sent a letter to Kim on the 77th anniversary of the end of Japan’s occupation of the Korean peninsula, where he stressed that closer ties would be in the interest of both countries.

It would help solidify the security and stability of the Korean peninsula and the Northeastern Asian region, Putin said in the letter, reports Reuters.

The North Korean leader also voiced his response through his letter saying that the Russian-North Korean friendship had been forged in World War II with victory over Japan, which had occupied the Korean peninsula.

Kim said that the “strategic and tactical cooperation, support and solidarity” between the two countries have since reached a new level in their common efforts to frustrate threats and provocations from hostile military forces.

Though KCNA did not describe who the hostile forces were, the term is generally used in North Korea to refer to the United States and its allies.

Kim expressed hope that the cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang would grow based on the 2019 agreement signed when he met with Vladimir Putin.

North Korea is considered a close ally of Russia. It had recently recognised two Russian-backed breakaway “people’s republics” in eastern Ukraine as independent states.

Urging the European Union to stop issuing tourist visas for Russian, the Latvian parliament&nbsp;called on the international community to impose on Belarus the same sanctions adopted against Moscow.

President Vladimir Putin had called Russia's invasion of Ukraine a ''special military operation'' to "denazify" a country that it says is ruled by neo-Nazis.

Aimed at justifying an imperial-style war of conquest by likening Ukraine to the Nazi German invaders of World War Two, Ukraine and the West have dismissed Russia's use of the word as propaganda.

Soon after, she was picked up by the police while out walking her pet dogs. At that time, she was not charged but was made to wait at the police station for a few hours.

"Went for a walk with the dogs, just stepped outside the gate, people in uniform approached me," she had posted,&nbsp;referring to a police station in the Moscow district added, "Now I'm sitting in Krasnoselsky ministry of internal affairs".

Accusing Moscow of using it as a "nuclear shield" in attacks on Ukrainian forces, Blinken said Washington was "deeply concerned" that Moscow was now using the plant as a military base.

After nuclear nonproliferation talks at the United Nations in New York, Blinken told reporters &nbsp;that "Of course, the Ukrainians cannot fire back lest there be a terrible accident involving the nuclear plant."&nbsp;

Calling it a "nuclear shield," Blinken said Russia's actions went beyond war crimes and it should be punished for it.
