In his daily evening address, Zelensky said, "Today, the Russian army has been shelling Kherson atrociously all day."

The shelling which struck a Kharkiv hospital as per him left "two women, nurses, were wounded in the hospital". As per the regional administration, the dead include two men and one woman.

He added that "as of now, there are reports of six wounded and three dead."

Kharkiv regional administration as per Reuters in a post on the app Telegram wrote that the "enemy shelling" resulted in the damage&nbsp;of a number of civil infrastructure objects including "the Kherson Regional Clinical Hospital, a school, a bus station, a post office, a bank, and residential buildings."

In Eastern Kharkiv, the strikes hit "a four-storey residential building". As per Oleh Synehubov, governor of Ukraine's second-largest city's regional military administration, "three victims received minor injuries. Unfortunately, an elderly woman died ... The building was partially destroyed."

Yet another strike in the Zaporizhzhia region of southern Ukraine, where, as per AFP fighting has intensified recently, Moscow-appointed officials said that Kyiv's attacks have struck a railway bridge, "killing people".

As&nbsp;per Yevgeny Balitsky, the Russian-installed head of the region, an attack from a Ukrainian HIMARS multiple rocket launcher was aimed at a railway bridge across the Molochnaya river.

The bridge is just north of Russia controlled city of Melitopol and was undergoing repairs. Balitsky said, "four people from the railways brigade were killed, five were injured."

Kremlin on Monday (January 30) dismissed former British prime minister Boris Johnson's claim&nbsp;that Russian President Vladimir Putin threatened to harm&nbsp;him with a missile during a phone call before Russia launched the "special military operation" into Ukraine. Kremlin denied the accusations, terming Johnson a liar.&nbsp;

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, "What Mr Johnson said is not true. More precisely it's a lie... There were no missile threats."&nbsp;

While speaking to BBC for a documentary, Johnson alleged that the Russian president had asked him about the prospects of Ukraine joining NATO. Boris claimed he said that it would not be "for the foreseeable future".&nbsp;

Johnson said that the call was "very long" and "most extraordinary", which took place last year in February. He added, "But I think from the very relaxed tone that he was taking, the sort of air of detachment that he seemed to have, he was just playing along with my attempts to get him to negotiate."&nbsp;

During his time in office, Boris made sure that the UK become a strong ally of Ukraine. He also visited the war-torn nation several times while in office and held telephonic conversations with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy frequently. He also helped Kiyv with military assistance.&nbsp;

Peskov on Monday also said members of the Western NATO alliance were becoming more involved in the conflict. He noted that their provision of arms to Ukraine would not change the course of events.&nbsp;

"It's a dead-end situation: it leads to significant escalation, it leads to NATO countries more and more becoming directly involved in the conflict - but it doesn't have the potential to change the course of events and will not do so," he said.&nbsp;

The remarks were made after the United States and Germany agreed to send powerful tanks to help Ukraine in its fight against Russia after much debate. Besides, the West has also provided Kyiv with a fresh package of advanced and sophisticated weapons.&nbsp;

Stefano Sannino, who is the secretary general of the European Union's European External Action Service, said that Russia has taken the war to "a different stage" by&nbsp;its&nbsp;continuous, indiscriminate&nbsp;attacks on civilian target in&nbsp;Ukraine. Sannino insinuated that Russia&nbsp;has apparently triggered Germany and the United States to send advanced tanks to Ukraine.&nbsp;

The EU official backed the proposed supply of tanks to Ukraine saying that they will be used for a counter-offensive&nbsp;and are not intended for an attack.&nbsp;

US President Joe Biden also announced that his administration will send 31 top-of-the-line M1 Abrams battle tanks to Ukraine, although delivery may not be very soon. The countries have also said that they would train Ukrainian forces for using the advanced tanks.

Germany’s foreign minister on Sunday said that her government would not stand in the way of Poland sending its Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine. For Ukrainian officials who have been calling on its western allies to supply them with&nbsp;german-made tanks for months, this could be the big breakthrough Kyiv has been waiting for. Berlin has till now stood in the way of sending the tanks itself or allowing other NATO nations to do so.

Replying to a question about Germany’s reaction to Poland possibly sending the Leopard 2 tanks without Germany’s permission, Annalena Baerbock, the German foreign minister said, "for the moment the question has not been asked, but if we were asked we would not stand in the way." Baerbock was in a conversation with France’s LCI TV.

Putin’s ally warns of ‘global catastrophe’ due to the West’s deliveries of new weapons to Ukraine

At least seven people were killed after a hand grenade accidentally went off in a Russian region bordering Ukraine, Interfax news agency reported on Tuesday.

The emergency services said that a search is still on to locate four more missing people.

"Four dead have been found among the missing. The number of victims has increased to seven people," the emergency services told Interfax.

According to reports, the incident took place on the weakened in the southern Belgorod region.

It was reported that a sergeant "unintentionally" detonated a hand grenade inside a dormitory at a location for military personnel, Interfax said, citing emergency services.

The ammunition blast triggered a massive fire, killing three servicemen and injuring 16 others, including the one who accidentally detonated.

Reports from the Telegram channel Baza, which is close to Russian security services, said that all the victims of the blast were being mobilised to fight the Ukrainian forces.

In late September, President Vladimir Putin had announced the mobilisation of 300,000 troops to bolster Russian personnel in Ukraine following a series of setbacks on the ground.

Earlier this month, Putin indicated that Russia would increase its spending on the military in the next two years, signalling that he is preparing for a prolonged and costly war with Ukraine.

He said that the conflict could turn into a “long-term process”, and added the Russia has no intention of drawing back from its goals of regime change in Ukraine.

“The partial mobilisation that was carried out revealed certain problems, as everyone well knows, which should be promptly addressed,” he said.

“I ask the ministry of defence to be attentive to all civilian initiatives, including taking into account criticism and responding correctly, in a timely manner.”

Calling Russian troops as “heroes”, Putin said that half of the 300,000 mobilised soldiers were currently stationed away from the battlefield.

“This is a sufficient reserve for conducting the special military operation,” Putin said.

He said that the change may be brought into force this spring but only after the provision of a one-to-three-year "transition period".

Critics said the idea of a transition period was a transparent attempt by Russian authorities to increase the number of Russians eligible to be called up for military service to plug massive manpower shortages resulting from heavy losses in Ukraine.

Russia's armed forces are a mix of contracted soldiers and conscripts. Shoigu has outlined plans to increase the total number of combat personnel to 1.5 million from 1.15 million.

Asked about the possible changes, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday that President Vladimir Putin "conceptually supported" raising the conscription age, but the exact details were up to the defence ministry to work out.

The role of conscripts in Ukraine came under intense focus soon after Russia sent in troops last February, with the defence ministry acknowledging some had been sent to fight there despite statements from Putin that this would not happen.

A little more than three months after putting&nbsp;Sergey Surovikin in charge&nbsp;of the Ukraine war, Russian President Vladimir Putin has&nbsp;demoted him and announced a replacement.&nbsp;

General&nbsp;Valery Gerasimov will take&nbsp;Surovikin's position who has been nicknamed&nbsp;'General Armageddon' in military circles. The country's defence ministry made the announcement on its official Telegram account.&nbsp;

"Army General Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the General Staff of the Russian armed forces, has been appointed Commander of the Joint Grouping of Troops (Forces)."

Gerasimov will be working alongside&nbsp;two other generals, Oleg&nbsp;Salyukov and Alexei Kim. Meanwhile,&nbsp;Surovikin will serve as&nbsp;Gerasimov's deputy.&nbsp;&nbsp;

While most experts see the re-shuffling of the pack as a panic measure, Moscow said the appointment was aimed at increasing close cooperation between the troops.&nbsp;

He added that his country would never capitulate to the attempts made by the West of using Ukraine as a medium for destroying Russia. He called the war with Ukraine a fight for protecting its "motherland" and winning its people's "true independence".

In the nine-minute address, Putin said that the West has been lying and provoking Moscow for initiating a "special military operation" in Ukraine.

"For years, Western elites hypocritically assured us of their peaceful intentions," he stated in his speech recorded in front of Russian service personnel at Russia's southern military district's headquarters.

"In fact, in every possible way they were encouraging neo-Nazis who conducted open terrorism against civilians in the Donbas," said Putin.

"The West lied about peace. It was preparing for aggression ... and now they are cynically using Ukraine and its people to weaken and split Russia,” he added.

He emphasised the importance of providing enough ammunition to Ukraine for the systems already in place and added that there was an "enormous" need for spare parts and ammunition.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, last week while speaking to a group of Western leaders, appealed to leaders to provide a wide range of air defence systems and weapons to help the country fight the ongoing invasion by Russia.

"We know that most wars end at the negotiating table - probably this war too - but we know that what Ukraine can achieve in these negotiations depends inextricably on the military situation," he added.

Ukraine was invaded by Russia on February 24 in what Putin stated was a "special military operation" against what seems to him as a threat to the security of Russians.

NATO's Stoltenberg appeals members to supply more weapons to Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin oversaw the launch of various new warships along with a nuclear-powered submarine on Thursday, as he promised to strengthen the country's navy.

The Russian president, who has avoided public engagements since the pandemic started, permitted the hoisting of Russian flags on the new vessels through a video link.

The newly-commissioned vessels included a minesweeper, a corvette, and the Generalissimus Suvorov nuclear-powered submarine, which can launch ballistic missiles.

In a word, to do everything to ensure Russia's security and protect our national interests in the world's oceans," Putin said in his televised remarks.

"The newest nuclear missile carriers being built and produced there, have no equal in the world in many specifications. New surface and underwater vessels have modern navigation, communication, and sonar systems. They have highly accurate weapons and robotic complexes," he added.

Russian President Vladimir Putin will hold talks with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping by video link on Friday, the Kremlin announced. Putin has been looking to strengthen his partnership with Xi over multiple issues like the war in Ukraine as well as trade relations between the two countries.

"It will be very important to exchange views on the most acute regional problems, which are both those that are closer to us, to Russia, and those that are closer to China," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Thursday when asked about the upcoming talk between the two leaders.

Russian Foreign minister Sergei Lavrov on Monday issued an ultimatum to Ukraine and said that "the enemy" knows Moscow's proposals for settlement and that if Kyiv fails to fulfil them for good the Russian army will take the matter into their own hands and decide the issue.

"Our proposals for the demilitarisation and denazification of the territories controlled by the regime, the elimination of threats to Russia's security emanating from there, including our new lands, are well known to the enemy," said Lavrov as per a TASS agency report.

It has been 11 months since Putin ordered the so-called special military operation and in this time thousands have died, millions have been displaced, and infrastructure worth millions demolished, Lavrov also remarked that how long the conflict will stretch depends on Ukraine, "the ball is in the regime's court and Washington behind it."

Moscow has since the beginning of the offensive called it a "special military operation" to "demilitarise" and "denazify" Ukraine. However, Kyiv and its western allies call it a war and an imperial-style aggression to grab land.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday (December 23) that the Russian defence industry has to up its game so that the Russian army gets all it needs to fight in Ukraine. Putin was speaking in Tula, a centre for arms manufacturing.&nbsp;

"The most important key task of our military-industrial complex is to provide our units and frontline forces with everything they need: weapons, equipment, ammunition, and gear in the necessary quantities and of the right quality in the shortest possible timeframes," said Putin.

"It's also important to perfect and significantly improve the technical characteristics of weapons and equipment for our fighters based on the combat experience we have gained."

Putin said this week that the Russian army had to learn from and fix the problems it had suffered from in Ukraine, promising to give it whatever it needed for the war that's nearing the end of its 10th month.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24 this year. After sustained gains in the initial months of the conflict, Russian forces suffered battlefield defeats in light of Ukrainian counterattacks.

Putin has projected the Ukraine war as Russia's pushback against what he terms excessive Western influence in world affairs.

Putin has conceded that a mobilisation campaign to add around 300,000 troops did not go to plan and has ordered shortfalls, which have sometimes included a lack of basic equipment and training, to be urgently addressed.

Russia still controls a significant chunk of Ukraine however, and Putin has said that Moscow will prevail despite fierce Ukrainian resistance and Kyiv receiving billions of dollars of Western weapons along with military intelligence and other help.

The theme of masculinity or being "man" is common. One video reportedly shows a group of 30-somethings loading a car. Upon questioning by a woman they disclose that they're leaving for Georgia "forever". One of the women near this scene suddenly spills her bag but these men instead of helping her drive away. Then a bunch of younger men rush to help her, which prompts one of the elderly women to announce:&nbsp;"The boys have left, the men stayed".

Another common theme is fighting to escape the bleak reality of a monotonous life filled with poverty, vodka and helplessness.

This comes as the Kremlin and the Russian President Vladimir Putin resolutely deny the need for more recruits in the army.&nbsp;

However, a Euromaidan Press report from last week claims that to "replenish" its dwindling ranks, Russia is now making it easier for its citizens with dual citizens and even foreign volunteers to enlist.

The head of Moscow-based Centre for Military Forecasting, Anatoly Tsyganok has predicted that soon "residents of Syria, Afghanistan, North Korea or Iran" could serve in the Russian military.

Previously, in September, Putin had announced a partial military mobilisation of Russian citizens. However, following urging from regional deputies, at the end of October, the president himself declared that the mobilisation had been completed.
