US: 4,000 evacuated as massive wildfire ravages southern California

<p>The infant mortality rate in the US shot three per cent up in 2022, the largest increase in two decades, something which experts view as “disturbing.”</p>

<p>According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a significant death rate increase was observed amongst infant boys and girls born at 37 weeks or earlier.</p>

<p>Infant mortality is the measure of how many babies die before they reach their first birthday.</p>

<p>The CDC also observed that the two largest causes behind the increase in the mortality rate were maternal complications and bacterial meningitis.</p>

<p>"It's definitely concerning, given that it's going in the opposite direction from what it has been," said Marie Thoma, a University of Maryland researcher who studies maternal and infant mortality.</p>

<p>Another expert, a Philadelphia-based neonatologist, Eric Eichenwald, said the report by the CDC was disturbing but warned that we can only speculate as to what was leading to this increase in the death rate.</p>

<p>The recent increase, though seemingly small, marks the first statistically significant uptick in the rate since the period between 2001 and 2002, as stated by Danielle Ely, the lead author of the CDC report.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ely also mentioned that researchers were unable to determine whether the 2022 rise is merely a one-year statistical anomaly or a long-lasting trend.</p>

<h2><strong>Overall death rate down 5 per cent</strong></h2>

<p>On a broader scale within the United States, the overall death rate witnessed a 5 per cent decline in 2022.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This decrease can be largely attributed to the diminishing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly among individuals aged 65 and older. Maternal mortality in the US also decreased in the previous year.</p>

US Banking authorities are revising policies from the 1970s to combat redlining and increase lending to low-income households. A new proposal would expand the scope of the historic 1977 community reinvestment act to include increasingly common online and mobile banking services. Redlining is when an institution refuses a loan or insurance to someone because they live in an area deemed to be a poor financial risk. If the proposal is approved, regulators won't just consider the locations of branches to determine a bank's grade for its lending to low- and moderate-income neighbourhoods.

<p>An Oklahoma mom has pleaded guilty to accidentally killing her daughter while firing at a stray dog. 43-year-old Amanda Moffett admitted to having killed her 16-year-old daughter in 2018 as she attempted to save her kittens from the dog outside her Nowata house, the Sun reported.</p>

<p>“I went out onto my front porch and discharged a handgun at what I believed was the stray dog,” Amanda Moffett wrote in her federal plea.</p>

An Oklahoma mom has pleaded guilty to accidentally killing her daughter while firing at a stray dog. 43-year-old Amanda Moffett admitted to having killed her 16-year-old daughter in 2018 as she attempted to save her kittens from the dog outside her Nowata house, the Sun reported. "Every gun owner has the legal responsibility to use extreme caution when discharging a firearm," US attorney Clinton Johnson observed in a ruling earlier this week. Moffett now faces a maximum sentence of eight years in federal prison. However, her actual sentence is likely to be way shorter due to her guilty plea. What happened? On Oct 5, 2018, 16-year-old Laramie Moffet told her mother that a stray dog was trying to attack the kittens playing outside their home. “I went out onto my front porch and discharged a handgun at what I believed was the stray dog,” Amanda Moffett wrote in her federal plea. "I did not verify that [my daughter] was not in my line of fire when I discharged the handgun,” she writes further. She also confirmed that her daughter died only because of her firing. According to officials, an important component of the planned swap, $6 billion that had been blocked in South Korea, reached Qatar on Monday and will be used to exchange prisoners between Iran and the United States. The planned discussion will take place immediately before Ebrahim Raisi, the hardline president of Iran, speaks at the UN General Assembly in New York. The transfer won't, however, mean that tensions between the United States and Iran have decreased because Iran is now enriching uranium more closely than ever to levels suitable for use in weapons.
