An Ohio woman who miscarried during her second trimester could face a year in prison after being charged with abuse of a corpse.

Brittany Watts, a 33-year-old black woman, started passing thick blood clots during the 21st week of pregnancy.

The doctor advised her to have her labour induced, as her water had broken prematurely, meaning that there was no chance the baby would survive.

The US House of Representatives on Friday (Dec 1) voted to expel the embattled Republican Representative George Santos, succeeding in their third attempt to show him the exit door since May.

The proposal to oust him was passed with a 311-114 majority, with at least 105 Congressmen from his own party voting against him and two Democrats voting in favour of him. The resolution required a two-thirds majority to pass.

Who will replace George Santos now?

After George Santos’s exit from the House, the biggest question is: Who will replace him in New York’s third congressional district?

New York legally requires holding a special election within 90 days. Now, local leaders from both Democratic and Republican parties will field their candidates to replace Santos in a finely balanced House, where Republicans’ lead over Democrats has now narrowed down to just eight seats.

Allegations against George Santos: A colourful life

Friday’s expulsion brought an end to the tumultuous tenure of Santos, which was peppered with scandals and allegations from the word go.

His victory in the 2022 elections came as a big surprise for the Democrats but it quickly turned into an embarrassment for the Republicans as he was found to have exaggerated and embellished his profile to better suit his election campaign.

Reports said he had not attended New York University or been employed at Goldman Sachs and Citigroup, as he had claimed during the campaign.

His claims of Jewish heritage and that his grandparents had fled the Nazis in World War II were also reported to be false.

In May this year, he was also charged with fraud and money laundering. In October, Santos was hit with additional charges for allegedly stealing his campaign donors' identities and racking up thousands of dollars in unauthorised charges on their credit cards, falsifying campaign finance reports, money laundering and more.

In total, he has been booked under 23 federal charges, and has pleaded not guilty to all of them.

The unprecedented charges against a sitting Congressman triggered an Ethics Committee investigation this spring. On November 16, the committee released its detailed 56-page report, which came as the last nail in the coffin for Santos.

The investigation found that Santos had stolen money from his campaign, deceived donors and engaged in fraudulent business dealings.

"While it is not uncommon for Committee investigations to involve multiple allegations and a pattern of misconduct, the sheer scope of the violations at issue here is highly unusual and damning," the report said.

‘Spent donor money on porn sites’

The Ethics Committee also found out that he used his campaign money on adult sites such as OnlyFans, and for meals, parking, travel and rent.

Santos "sustained all of this through a constant series of lies to his constituents, donors, and staff about his background and experience," the report said, adding that "his misrepresentations and lack of transparency have continued during his tenure in Congress."

According to investigators, Santos also ignored warnings regarding inconsistencies in his campaign’s bookkeeping.

His campaign's ex-treasurer, Nancy Marks, pleaded guilty in October to a scheme to embellish his campaign finance reports.

Controversial past: Santos, the drag queen

In January this year, a major controversy broke out after it was claimed that Santos had competed as a drag queen in Brazilian beauty pageants 15 years ago.

A 58-year-old Brazilian performer, who uses the drag name Eula Rochard, was quoted as saying by Reuters that she befriended the now-ousted congressman when he was cross-dressing in 2005 at the first gay pride parade in Niteroi, a Rio de Janeiro suburb.

Santos reacted to these reports saying that the claims were “categorically false," adding: "I will not be distracted nor fazed by this."

Santos continues to defend himself

Santos says that he will not seek re-election but maintains his innocence. He also accused his fellow lawmakers of rushing to expel him even though he was not convicted in any of the alleged crimes.

The United States will soon witness a brutal cold snap with below-freezing temperatures, revealed a weather map.

A cold front will hit several regions of the US, including the Pacific Northwest and the Northeast, on December 7, Daily Express US reported. According to the WXCharts by the MetDesk, the parts of the United States, from South Carolina to Maine, will experience below-freezing temperatures that can fall as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius.

In the winter outlook for 2023-24, the National Weather Service (NWS) mentioned that Alaska and the West Coast into the Northern and Central Plain will have warmer-than-average temperatures in the upcoming winter season. Meanwhile, the rest of the United States will have standard or below-average temperatures. NWS said, "There will be wetter-than-average conditions across northern Alaska, much of the southern US, and along the Atlantic Coast from Massachusetts southeast to Florida."

Temperatures have already plunged in much of the US this week, with New York reporting temperatures as low as 24 degrees Celsius. However, residents of New York and those living along the East Coast can expect colder temperatures on December 7, as the high wind gusts would make the air cooler.

El Nino, the weather pattern that makes up the warm phase of the El Niño Southern Oscillation cycle, might worsen winter in 2023. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration informed in an update last week that there's a 62 per cent chance that 2023's El Niño might last until June 2023. The update also mentioned there could be record-warm temperatures and heavy rainfall along the West Coast. Furthermore, a potentially stormy winter could sweep the Southeast.

The Midwest has already experienced a treacherous snowstorm, which resulted in slick roads, increasing the number of car accidents. Authorities have advised drivers across the United States to stay updated with the weather patterns and prepared for travelling in wintry conditions.

According to AccuWeather, the possibility of snow spreading into the northern and central Rocky Mountains this coming weekend is high. They have also put Wisconsin, the Great Lakes, New York, and surrounding areas on high alert for winter deluge. NWS said, "There will be wetter-than-average conditions across northern Alaska, much of the southern US, and along the Atlantic Coast from Massachusetts southeast to Florida." Donald Trump challenges gag order as legal battles intensify ahead of US elections

Lawyers for Donald Trump were met with scepticism Monday (Nov 20) as they urged an appeals court to revoke a gag order in his election interference case -- although the judges appeared inclined to narrow the wording to safeguard his right to criticise his prosecution.

Judge Tanya Chutkan, overseeing the federal case against the former US president in Washington for an alleged criminal conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election, restricted statements that "target" prosecutors, court personnel and witnesses.

The order sought to put an end to incendiary remarks against individuals by Trump -- who has repeatedly called chief prosecutor Jack Smith "deranged" and his colleagues "thugs" -- and to stop the former president publicly attacking potential witnesses.

Chutkan did recognise Trump's right to criticise his successor Joe Biden, whom the Republican frontrunner will likely face as he bids for a return to the White House in next year's presidential election.

But Trump argues that the gag order, currently temporarily lifted during his appeal, runs up against First Amendment protections guaranteeing free speech.

His lawyers say the restrictions on him in the trial, set to start in March, will have an undue influence on his 2024 campaign.

"There's a balance that has to be undertaken here, and it's a very difficult balance in this context," one of the three judges on the appeals panel said, summarising the stakes of the Washington hearing, which lasted more than two hours.

"And we certainly want to make sure that the criminal trial process and its integrity and its truth-finding function are protected. But we've got to use a scalpel here and not step into really sort of skewing the political arena."

A team of foreign journalists was robbed at gunpoint while working in San Francisco, dealing a huge blow to the city’s efforts to revamp its reputation ahead of a major summit of Asia-Pacific nations in the US.

Czech TV journalist Bohumil Vostal was capturing San Francisco’s iconic City Lights bookstore when he and his team were robbed by three armed, masked assailants.

“They were heading at my cameraman, aiming a gun at his stomach, and one at my head,” Vostal said in an interview Monday.

San Francisco, home to the tech mecca Silicon Valley, has of late attracted negative news coverage due to its unruly shoplifters, drug markets and increasing crime.

But now the city has gathered international spotlight due to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, an event drawing some of the world’s most powerful leaders to downtown and Nob Hill. This includes a planned, much-anticipated summit of US President Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.

The robbers fled in the dark, taking away their equipment worth $18,000 and recorded content from the last day. Efforts to improve reputation go down the drain San Francisco, home to the tech mecca Silicon Valley, has of late attracted negative news coverage due to its unruly shoplifters, drug markets and increasing crime. Watch: US Defence Secretary LLoyd Austin arrives in Seoul × In the days leading to the summit, officials here made efforts to clean up the streets and crack down on crime. Now, the robbery incident is sure to shift the spotlight to the widespread crime menace in the California city. “I’m one of those many people who used to read Jack Kerouac’s ‘On the Road,’ and I was so much looking forward to visit your city,” Vostal said, recalling how magical the day of filming had been. Police action Although police arrived within minutes after they dialled 911, the officials had little to offer except sympathy. The response they got from locals, however, was overwhelming. “All the people of San Francisco are almost blaming themselves, like they are so sorry for something they didn’t do,” Vostal said. A spokesperson from Mayor London Breed’s office said she will help replace the equipment of the journalists. Her spokesperson, Jeff Cretan, said that law enforcement is aggressively cracking down on robberies and other crimes. (With inputs from agencies)
