US Midterms: How opinion polls, prediction markets and stock movements are placed

The 2026 US midterm elections are drawing closer, putting the Trump administration’s economic record under renewed scrutiny. With control of Congress at stake on November 3, issues such as trade, jobs, prices and the health of key industries are likely to remain central to the political debate. Against this backdrop, President Donald Trump’s latest meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping could have significance beyond foreign policy. Their summit produced agreements on agricultural trade, US coal purchases and artificial intelligence cooperation, while extending a broader trade truce. But the deal leaves several major US-China disputes unresolved, raising questions about how much it can deliver before the midterms.
China enters the US midterm conversation
For American farmers, China’s role is particularly important. Beijing is a major market for US agricultural products, and the trade war has repeatedly disrupted that relationship.Following Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Washington, the two countries agreed to pursue tariff reductions covering about $30 billion of goods each. China’s list includes American corn, wheat, sorghum, meat, dairy products, vegetable oils and meals. That gives the Trump administration an economic development to highlight as the November 3 midterms approach, particularly in farm-heavy states. But there is an important omission: US soybeans were not included. Soybeans were worth about $16.2 billion in US exports to China in 2025 and remain one of the most politically sensitive agricultural products in the relationship.
Trade truce gets more time, not a final deal
The summit also produced a two-month extension of the existing US-China trade truce, taking it through January 10.The extension prevents an immediate return to higher tariffs and gives negotiators more time to work through unresolved issues. But it is not a permanent trade settlement. The two countries have also agreed to continue discussions through the US-China Board of Trade. That distinction matters. American businesses and farmers get additional breathing room, but uncertainty over the longer-term tariff regime remains.
Coal gives US industry another win
Agriculture was not the only US sector to gain from the summit.China agreed to import 10 million metric tonnes of US coal each year in 2027 and 2028. Beijing described the purchases as beneficial to the US coal industry by supporting income and employment. The volume is substantial for US coal producers but relatively small compared with China's overall coal imports – around 2 per cent of its annual imports, according to Reuters.
AI cooperation without ending the rivalry
The two governments also agreed to establish a communication channel for AI-related incidents and hold a follow-up dialogue by the end of November. That is cooperation, but it should not be confused with an end to the technology rivalry. Washington and Beijing remain competitors over advanced technology, while Trump has stressed that the US intends to maintain its lead in AI.
What remains unresolved
The summit therefore produced a collection of working arrangements rather than a sweeping reset.Soybean access remains an issue. The broader tariff dispute has only been paused. Strategic sectors such as semiconductors remain outside the tariff arrangement, while disagreements over technology, Taiwan and wider geopolitical competition continue. For the White House, the timing is notable. The summit has produced commitments involving American farmers, coal producers and other exporters that can be discussed on the campaign trail. But whether those measures translate into meaningful economic gains for voters before November remains dependent on implementation – and on whether Washington and Beijing can turn the temporary truce into something more durable.

With less than a month to go before the 2026 US midterm elections, the cost of groceries, fuel and other everyday essentials is emerging as a central issue for voters and a test for US President Donald Trump. According to a newAP-NORC poll, about 65 per cent of US adults surveyed said Trump's policies were responsible for today's high cost of living, while 67 per cent of Republicans said factors outside Trump's control were more responsible. Just 17 per cent approved of Trump's handling of the cost of living, while his approval on the economy stood at 26 per cent, a new low in the poll. The poll, conducted September 24-28 among 2,140 adults, comes as Trump steps up his campaign appearances ahead of the November 3 elections, when voters will decide control of Congress. Also read | 100 victory claims, 200+ days of war: Is Trump's Iran gamble turning into a midterm nightmare?
Trump's economic message faces voter test: 7 in 10 say performance 'worse than expected'
Notably, affordability was a major theme of Trump's 2024 campaign, when he repeatedly blamed the Joe Biden administration for inflation and promised to bring prices down.Since then, Trump has continued to argue that he inherited high prices from former President Joe Biden. Trump later said the country could afford the payments, but the proposal would require congressional approval and could cost more than $1 trillion. He has also promoted lower drug prices and a separate $500 payment for nearly 1 million Americans who, his administration says, were overcharged through Affordable Care Act coverage. Reuters reported that those payments are being distributed in 30 states, including several politically competitive states.
Trump puts himself at centre of midterm campaign
Trump has increasingly presented the midterms as a choice between his administration and Democrats, urging supporters to vote Republican even though his name is not on the ballot. He is also embarking on an aggressive campaign schedule, with appearances planned across competitive House and Senate contests. Since then, Trump has continued to argue that he inherited high prices from former President Joe Biden. In August, he said grocery and other prices were already “tremendously out of control” when he returned to the White House. "Affordability ... I inherited that from the Biden administration. We had very high prices; we had eggs that were selling at four times what they are now, we had all sorts of products that were just tremendously out of control," Trump said in the Oval Office on Aug. 31. But voters surveyed by AP-NORC are increasingly dissatisfied with the results. About seven in 10 said Trump's handling of the cost of living had been worse than expected. More than half also said the national economy, the country overall and their local economy were worse than when Trump took office in 2025. Trump's economic approval has fallen 14 percentage points since March 2025, according to AP-NORC. At the Republican Party's first midterm convention in Dallas last month, he proposed a $5,000 payment to every US adult if Republicans retain control of Congress. Trump puts himself at centre of midterm campaign Trump has increasingly presented the midterms as a choice between his administration and Democrats, urging supporters to vote Republican even though his name is not on the ballot. He is also embarking on an aggressive campaign schedule, with appearances planned across competitive House and Senate contests. AP reported on Friday that Trump was campaigning in Alabama before travelling to Ohio, while his party faces growing pressure over economic dissatisfaction. The result is an election in which congressional candidates are campaigning on local issues, but Trump's record, economic policies and handling of inflation are increasingly getting difficult to separate from the national Republican message.

US voters head into the midterms with grocery, fuel and housing costs high on their minds. A new AP-NORC poll shows 65% blame Trump's policies for today's cost-of-living pressures, putting his economic record at the centre of the 2026 campaign.

The race for control of the US Congress is entering its final stretch, with the political landscape looking markedly different from the picture seen earlier this year. With the November 3 midterm elections approaching, prediction markets now put the chances of Democrats taking the House of Representatives at roughly 92 per cent. Their chances of winning control of the Senate are lower, but still around 60-63 per cent, according to current Kalshi and Polymarket prices. These figures are market-based probabilities, not forecasts of the final result. They can move quickly as new polling, campaign developments and economic news emerge.
From February to October
The shift is notable because Republicans entered the year with a more favourable political environment and control of both chambers. But the picture began changing during the spring and summer. By February, Democrats were already showing strength in national congressional polling. An Economist/YouGov survey conducted February 13 - 16 found Democrats ahead of Republicans by seven percentage points on the congressional ballot, 47 per cent to 40 per cent. The latest campaign environment has also brought traditionally Republican states into greater focus. Reuters reported this week that Democrats are increasingly competitive in several states Donald Trump won by double digits in 2024, including Texas and Kansas.
Why the Senate remains a tougher fight
The Senate map is more complicated than the House. Republicans currently hold a 53 - 47 majority, meaning Democrats need a net gain of four seats to take control.Several Republican-held seats are now being closely contested, increasing the possible routes to a Democratic Senate majority. But the prediction markets remain considerably less certain about the Senate than the House. Other forecasting systems also show a Democratic advantage while producing different probabilities – another reminder that these numbers can change before voting begins. For now, the numbers show how dramatically the midterm battlefield has moved since the beginning of 2026, with Democrats entering October in a considerably stronger position in the market than they were earlier in the year.

US midterm elections: How anti-India, anti-South Asia hate issue has entered the US campaign debate

US President Donald Trump has pledged to crisscross the country for Republican candidates in 35 competitive races before the November midterm elections. Trump's 35-state midterm sprint: Why are Republicans quietly scrubbing his name from campaign sites?

US President Donald Trump expressed concern on Tuesday, highlighting that Republicans must win the congressional midterm elections of 2026 - or else he will be impeached by Democrats. "You gotta win the midterms 'cause, if we don't win the midterms, it's just gonna be - I mean, they'll find a reason to impeach me," Trump told Republican lawmakers at a retreat in Washington, and added that "I'll get impeached." With November elections looming, a vote that could derail his agenda and open the door to congressional scrutiny, Donald Trump urged allies who hold a slim majority in the US House to set aside internal rifts. He pressed them to promote his positions on gender issues, healthcare and election integrity to voters frustrated by rising living costs. "They say that when you win the presidency, you lose the midterm. I wish you could explain to me what the hell's going on with the mind of the public," Trump said, news agency Reuters reported.
Trump under pressure?
Meanwhile, after ordering a bold military operation that led to the capture of Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro, Trump is facing growing calls to refocus on domestic priorities, particularly inflation and prices. On Tuesday, he largely sidestepped those concerns, blaming Democrats for the problem and urging Republicans to campaign on strong stock market performance. Trump also briefly referenced the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack, as Democrats marked its fifth anniversary by accusing Republicans of attempting to rewrite history during an event at the John F Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts. Last year, Trump removed its board of Democratic appointees, where the remaining trustees voted in favour of Trump in December to rename the centre to include his name along with former President Kennedy. He continuously made false claims that Washington had experienced no homicides in seven months. Surprisingly, Washington police confirmed a murder on New Year's Eve and reported at least 127 homicides that took place in 2025. In addition, Trump predicted that Republicans would beat the odds and deliver an "epic midterm victory," but also complained about some members who don't follow the path. All seats in the US House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate will be up for grabs in November. With November elections looming, a vote that could derail his agenda and open the door to congressional scrutiny, Donald Trump urged allies who hold a slim majority in the US House to set aside internal rifts.

Will Trump get impeached? President urges his allies for unity before congressional midterm elections 2026

Former Speaker of the US House Nancy Pelosi is optimistic that the Democrats will regain control of the House of Representatives in the 2026 midterm elections, predicting a strong comeback under the leadership of Congressman Hakeem Jeffries. In a recent interview on ABC’s This Week, Pelosi expressed full confidence that Jeffries, who currently serves as the House Democratic leader, would secure the Speaker’s gavel after the midterms. She described him as a unifying and respected figure capable of leading the party back to power. Pelosi also criticised the current state of the Republican-controlled Congress, claiming that it has largely abandoned its responsibilities, instead yielding power to President Donald Trump. She argued that Republicans have stopped acting as an independent legislative body, instead doing whatever Trump demands. According to Pelosi, this trend will end when Democrats regain control. As Pelosi looks ahead to the 2026 elections, she sees them as a critical moment to restore Congress’s constitutional functions. With Trump’s approval ratings plummeting and his influence over the GOP weakening, the former speaker is confident that Democrats will be in a strong position to take back the majority. Also Read: Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky calls for referendum on peace plan, demands 60-day ceasefire for talks Recent polls, such as a Gallup survey in November, show Trump’s approval rating at just 36%, with a significant 60% disapproval rate.
